9:15 fun fact: SEGA didn't make the CGI for this game, it was outsourced to a company called Blur Studios, they also made the CGI for Shadow The Hedgehog. That's why the CGI looks different than the actual game (and way better in my opinion)
It was so good, they also did the Sonic Movie Heck you can see Tim Miller and Jeff Fowler's name in the end credits for both 06 and Shadow The Hedgehog
@@matthewbraith0411 Project 06 isn't perfect, but it changes a trainwreck into a respectable game. It feels a lot like the Sonic Adventure games, still plenty of flaws and it's not for everyone, but there's plenty of fun to be had
I'm happy this video wasn't just a "Sonic 2006 sucks" compilation for 30 minutes. I appreciate the actual analysis and more in-depth thought about the game, it's development history, and so forth. It made the video way more interesting and pleasant to listen to.
Same, as someone whos favorite sonic character is Silver and Ive had my fair share of people shitting on me for liking him, Sonic 06 was one of the first exposure to Sonic I had due to people at the time making fun of it on YT.
I agree. Game development is hard because of the overpaid people in charge who mess things up. The actual developers want to make good work and highlighting the story behind the games is a good approach.
J's reviews did a very interesting and thorough 2 hour video on it, and he also dives into what's great and special about it better than anyone else I've seen so far. I think his explanation is accurate in explaining why people keep coming back to it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vT5v4AoeobA.html
Sonic 06 is one of those rare games that are bad, but curiously so. Last year's Balan Wonderworld is another entry in that category, I think. Both feature absolutely baffling design decisions, little to no quality assurance, outdated tech and so on. Both have one weirdly solid aspect that just stands out like a sore thumb among the other details (music in Sonic's case, CGI cutscenes in Balan's). And with both games you get a sense of genuine earnestness that makes it genuinely difficult to hate the game. They're still bad, mind you, but you can't help but be intrigued by them to some degree.
It has the same effect that a certain kind of bad movie. You just go wow that was a terrible decision but they fully committed to it which is shocking.
One thing that I will give 06 is how much better the game treats Shadow's character, he no longer holds a gun, he's no longer a whiny edgelord, he's back to being his normal self, he helps Sonic when he needs it, he acts as a mentor to Silver, he chooses to fight til the end even when people turn against him instead of siding with Mephiles, and he has some nice little moments with Omega and Rouge that reminded me so much of their relationship in Sonic Heroes. Sad to say that this is the last game that treated him with that kind of respect, referring to Rise of Lyric and Forces, two games that used him for fanservice and butchered his character in both of them.
Kinda heartwarming to see the completionist rating go up But man, almost done with NG+. Only 20 to go and then the weight is gone. Completionist NG+ really is a testament to show how much Jirard cares about us. He's willing to recomplete all 120 games of the original run all so those memories wont be lost. Thank you, Beardman
I honestly do think Sonic 06 would’ve turned out much differently with Yuji Naka involved. Would’ve been interesting to see his influence on the direction one last time
Yuji Naka wasn't the only thing that impacted Sonic games though, and not even all the ones he directed were great or aged well. I don't think he by himself could have salvaged a rushed, unfinished product.
Some people think that Sonic can’t swim because Yuji had a false idea that hedgehogs couldn’t swim (he had quality control for the Sonic games, but even he can have his flaws like everyone else), some other people think he was too busy being a jackass to his friends (especially Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Zeena even though the Deadly Six (or so they think just to make Sonic look more than evil because they) were clearly enemies) even though he was a hero in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s (in the comics and shows, at least).
Thank you for trying to give the game a fair shot this time around. And like others have said, I am very glad you mentioned Project-06. I honestly wish that were the version of the game you could have completed, but alas, it is not finished yet.
I love that Jirard is being the type of games youtuber that doesn’t go “This game sucks donkey balls in hell,” and instead is like “They were under a lot of pressure and were trying to do what they could with their limited resources.” Mad respect.
Well, parts of them do, but we can give Sonic ‘06 and 2010s credit at times when they deserve it (Sonic Boom May not be the best game series, but it’s meta in the right way, hysterically funny even)!
I can´t be thankful enough for witnessing a fair, constructive review like this. Respecting the broken Sonic fanbase from years of ridicule, the developers and the human aspect game development. Thank you mister, for real.
I went out and bought my copy of Sonic 2006 specifically so I could contribute a skit to your original review of this game. Very surreal to see this game on your channel, once again. The skit I created didn't actually destroy or damage my copy of the game, and I still have it to this day. I've still yet to ever play Sonic 06, but I have every intention of doing so, someday. It's an iconic landmark in video game history, to say the absolute least. And I agree with you in which I've always seen that there ARE signs of potential for what this game could've been. It's really cool to hear about Project 06 and all the work that's getting poured into creating a better experience of this game for everyone. I look forward to seeing how that all turns out. Who knows, perhaps the ones working on that will be allowed to work on an official 3D Sonic game in the future, similar to the opportunity given to those who gave us Sonic Mania. 100 games down... 20 more to go... You're incredible. You're a legend. You're a heck of a fighter. And you're almost there. Wishing you all the best in this final stretch of your New Game Plus adventure.
I like how the game developers kept sonic and tails cartoon looking while trying to make elise look as realistic as possible. That akward clash of visual styles during cutscenes really sums up this game
Your original Sonic 06 review was the first video I had ever watched from your channel, and I've been watching your vids every week ever since. It's cool to see everything come full circle with New Game Plus. Thanks for all the content and stay awesome, Jirard!
Seriously, if you look at all the amazing fan works from Sonic fans and how much talent and love are put into those projects, it's honestly mind blowing.
I personally loved a lot of the bits and humor from the old days of The Completionist, but I'm still happy that Jirard is putting out quality content that people enjoy even if it's different. You do you, man.
Agreed, I really liked those bits and the humor. And I also really liked when Jirard was able to just say that a game was bad. It's gotten a little too... let's say robotic lately, for my taste.
Dude, you're awesome. Fuck all that talk about cringe. It takes balls to show yourself on the internet. Your work. And your humor. I don't miss the old gags and I love that you take the games and the reviews more seriously, but still find places to fit in some more down-to-earth jokes. Keep up the good work. You're a legend for going through all these games 100%.
Oh damn, i remember the original episode. Was one of my favorites so to see this recompleted is kinda surreal, but at the same time, like the episode! Congrats on recompleting the first 100 games Jirard!
Fun fact. This game was the last main Sonic game (not counting Black Knight and Zero Gravity) that was written by Shiro Maekawa. He was the one who made the stories of Sa2 and Heroes. He created Shadow as a character. Yet he didn’t have anything to do with the Shadow the Hedgehog spin-off, which is why the game completely butchered Shadows character while 06, despite its terrible story kept Shadows character mostly intact and was the last game to do so (since he wasn’t in Zero gravity and was a different person in Black Knight) Which I think is part of the reason Shadows character still sucks.
I don't know about butchered, after everything that happened in SA2 it kind of makes sense that Shadow had a bit of an identity crisis (especially as the invading alien species came in to throw another wrench into what he knows about his past,) but you know to each his own, we both have different opinions and that's ok. Thanks for the fun fact, always cool to learn more about a franchise you like.
Only Jirard could make such a positive video about Sonic 06, it's nice to hear someone talk about the potential of the game than make fun of it constantly
honestly, i just love how respectful and heartfelt videos like this are. it'd be so easy to just make another 06 video over-the-top dunking on it, but the fact you were genuinely mindful of the game's development and what it might mean to others is such a refreshing thing on this platform. not that sarcastic, gag-filled reviews _are_ by any means bad or lesser, it's really just a matter of style and what people are up to watch at any given moment, but it feels like a breath of fresh air and i think the move away from skits and towards something more focused on just giving your perspective on the game and your time with it was a hugely good move for the show. it really warmed my heart a little hearing you talk about the old episode and the change in direction as well as the actual game and fan efforts themselves. genuine and even introspective kind of reviews or analyses are always the ones that make me the happiest, and this was absolutely that kind of video. i really appreciate that -^ ^-
Eight years. Eight years ago I met you at SGC 2014, shook your hand and told you that you were a braver man than I would ever be, for putting yourself through this absolute dumpster fire of a completion journey. And now you've done it again. You did it. Again. Not only are you a braver man than I, Jirard, you're also certifiably more insane.
I’m so glad he talked about P-06. I really believe there are good ideas behind 06 and I’m happy more attention is being brought to a project that wants to show off those good ideas.
I think everyone knows that when we insult this game it isn't an attack on the devs that were forced to work under ridiculous restraints. It's cause the game is bad and it's fun to mock.
I remember when I was a kid we got this game for my younger brother because he really liked playing it with our cousin, glitches and all. Hell, especially because the glitches made the game more fun to play with friends. In the end I guess it ended up finding a place in my heart after all, even if it was for the wrong reasons.
Sonic 06 is the punchline that never truly loses its punch. Since I first saw it, way back when, and even to this day, I still think there's a good game, buried somewhere deep within the train wreck it ended up releasing as. I'm happy that folks are still working to try and make it more playable, so that it can shine the way it never got the chance to, even if it's so many many years after the fact. Even if the script itself is absolute nonsense, especially combined with the voice over and general presentation. Great work on the episode as always, Jirard. Definitely looking forward to whatever comes next, and on a personal note, I enjoy what the show has become quite a bit. Always be you, good sir.
I can't help that appreciate your optimism in regards to Sonic 06, I'm glad to know that there's someone else out there that also sees some good in this game.
I remember when the original Sonic 2006 video came out. Life has changed so much since then but I’m still here 8+ years later still watching your videos. Keep it up man
The one thing i absolutely appreciate about this game is that when sonic collides with a part of the stage, majority of the time he just barrel rolls while keeping his momentum which is absolutely hilarious to me
Honestly, this is weirdly one of my favorite sonic games. I got it when I was 14, was super excited and none of the loading and sluggishness bothered me I guess cause I just love most sonic stuff. I absolutely love project 06 tho. Its what the game felt like to me when i was younger.
Amazing review, sonic 06 was one of if not the first game I ever played so it holds a special place in my heart. Thank you for all your reviews. Also loading screen moment 2:55 - 3:03
Congrats Jirard and crew (let's not forget about the hard-working crew behind Jirard that makes all this possible!) on 100 games redone!! Great video, WOW what a terrible game lol. Really enjoyed this video. As being someone who's relatively new to your videos, it was very cool to see the evolution of The Completionist. Keep up the awesome work everyone! Good luck on all your future endeavors! Y'all are amazing.
I apologize if this isn't okay promoting somebody else's video, but Matt McMuscles actually has a really good video on how much of a nightmare this game was behind the scenes. Pretty much everything that could go wrong did.
I'm very glad that you've embraced kindness and grace in your evaluations, Jirard. It sets an excellent precedent for your peers to compare themselves against. Thanks for making the world a better place.
I'm glad to see someone who's not one of those people who just mindlessly tears into 06 because it's a bad game. I have a serious hatred for people like that, and it's because of those people not shutting up that we don't get anything with the same amount of spectacle and potential 06 had nowadays.
Jirard, your doing a really Good thing here that I've noticed the past couple years has become common in the sonic community. It seems like the era of "take easy shots at the low hanging fruit sonic 06" has come to an end. People have come out saying they like the game, or appreciate some aspect of it or can see the potential that's there, and it's legitimately more popular to show support for sonic 06 than to tear it down. That's exactly the attitude we need to save the sonic franchise from Sega's reactionary way of doing things. All of us showing support for the hedgehog in general will inevitably build sonic team's confidence back to where it used to be, and sonic will reclaim his place in the pantheon of legendary gaming icons. Once again, he will push the envelope and contribute something revolutionary to gaming as a whole like he used to, instead of falling down the stairs. All we need do is support sonic team instead of being the notorious toxic fan base that is responsible for pushing our beloved hedgehog down the stairs in the first place. We levy criticism at Sega for reacting, yet we forget that it's US they react to. So on behalf of the entire fanbase, I thank you for your service.
The worst part about Sonic '06 is that there honestly is a good game in there, but, long story short, corporate intervention forced this to be put out before it could have been good. (See quote "A bad game is bad forever, delayed game can be great")
I honestly disagree. The problem with 06 is that, technical stuff aside, it's not really good and, ironically, I think it's more obvious with the p-06 project: sonic's campaign is a nice continuation of his adventure days, but everything else from the forced and repetitive combat sections of shadow, his redundant vehicles, silver campaign that is just "pick stuff, throw stuff", the bad story etc. etc. Prove that 06 didn't have a good design from the start and repeated a lot of hiccups sonic team carried since the adventure titles. I admire and approve p-06, but the stuff they are repairing is not what a lot of people want from a platform based on movement and speed. The whole unfinish aspect of the og release is just the icying on the cake
@@evdestroy5304 oh look we found the die hard defender that apparatly has the final word on everything and decides if something is objectivly good wheter you like it or not. Jokes aside, you didn't get what I said: people don't want a lot of the design coices of sonic 06, not that they don't want a finished version of the game. If you are making a soeed based platformer, putting a lot of Road blocks like costant enemy rooms that you have to clear, slow vehicles, empty hub worlds and other random BS that don't belong in this type of game and series. I'm not condemming ChaosX, i'm just saying that if the game was finished it couod have been mediocre just like the adventure games
@@lupinthenerd439 This logic makes no sense though. "They don't want a game with all the design elements of 06, they want 06 itself which still has all of those design elements". What is this logic? Also the Adventure games are critically acclaimed and considered some of Sonic's best, so idk what you're talking about there.
@@evdestroy5304 they were well received THEN. Now, everyone picked up on their problems and the games aged very badly. And unfortunatly 06 carries a lot of their problems. What i'm trying to say is that it's nice to have a finished version of 06, but that doesn't make it instantly good or a game for everyone, because of it's many design flaws. Is it clear now?
I watched the streams of this where Jirard was taught various glitches to skip through a lot of the levels, especially Silver's. He was so, so happy for it.
This game and its aftermath convinced me that Sonic’s greatest strength as a brand is its ability to recover and bounce back from failure. Any other video game series would be dead in the water if they had a Sonic 06. Even *MARIO* wouldn’t survive a Sonic 06. But somehow, Sonic lived and even thrived after this game. No matter what happens, Sonic will never give up the fight, and I find that beautiful.
I freaking love Sonic 06 despise of it's flaws and Gameplay,I love the Characters, the Story, the Songs, the Stages, the Villains, the Dark and Serious Tone, and the Message, this Game deserves a Remake and it's one of my 3 favorite Sonic Games of all time by far.
This is one of the best and most earnest episodes of The Completionist ever produced. Massive props to the script and the heart that went into the disucssion.
I remember finding this channel around episode 90 and I loved/hated how "corrupted" this game made Jirard; loved because it was just a funny skit, hated because even though I know the game is hot garbage to play but this still was one of my favorite sonic games. I was so bummed knowing I could never go back to the original video, but I'm glad this game is getting a more... fair review this time round
This one brings back a lot of memories both old and new. I really enjoyed being in chat and seeing the Completion process and just hanging out with everyone. Also super cool that even games like 06 have followings dedicated enough to essentially make sure it isn't erased from gaming history.
I still haven't played this game, but I HAVE watched you review it twice. I appreciate you leaning away from the typical "this game is doodoo bad why would anybody play this etc etc" that has shaped this game's reputation the past 16 years. This review was thoughtful, provided much needed context about it's development (demonstrating WHY it turned out so bad) and it shows some major growth on your part. Great vid man.
I can't believe how as the years go on I've realised that Sonic '06 is basically just a Sonic Yakuza Sub Story game with the Gold medals, it feels very much like Yakuza's completion lists.
I got this game because the Grumps played it, and at the time I made a point of buying every game I watched on RU-vid. Expected to hate the game too, but I just couldn't do it. It's a bad game for sure, but it's also clearly unfinished, which makes me wonder what it could actually have become. More than anything, it belongs in a museum.
I'm so damn glad you mentioned P-06, I absolutely love the game and I Speedrun it semi consistently! But I am curious as to what retail speedrunners chatted with you In twitch?
Sonic 06, to me, is one of those games that had a lot of ambitious ideas, but sadly Sega could not fully realize and complete their vision. Even if their execution of the ideas weren't very good, I still think that if they gave it another go with extra time, then we could have something truly special and project 06 proves this. Great job Jirard.
i personally love the realistic humans in sonic the unleashed ones look a little too goofy to me the realistic ones look jarring but i kinda like it it makes sonic world feel unique
I play this game for two reasons. Silver the hedgehog and his telekinetic powers And the glitchy stuff. The hammy voice acting always gets a good laugh out of me.
The loading screen joke caught me off guard and destroyed me. Very nice to see a review of this game taking the issues with production into account instead of just mentioning them- and how they affected the team.
I used to love sonic 06 when I was a kid. I noticed the game was weird but the glitches didn't bother me. I was happy to see sonic and the CGI cutscenes were beautiful. My favorite sonic quote comes from this game "If you have time to worry, then run!"
I actually liked Sonic 06. Don’t get me wrong it has major flaws but I still enjoyed it for the most part. I feel that is was remastered today it would be a great game.
I love that you're not afraid to examine your past work and make changes going forward. The bad faith angry nerd style reviews were just how things were done for a while, but a lot of people are growing past that and I'm glad to see it
I'm just done playing some Sonic on the SEGA Saturn and you post the Completionist New Game + of Sonic 2006....talk about coincidence. I bow to you for re-completing the game.
A thing I that I find surprising is despite how I hear SEGA struggled with the PS3 Kit, I played this Sonic the Hedgehog on PS3, which came out one year later, and I didn't get as many bugs as I hear people mention. I tried replicating some of them and it didn't work or I had a minor issue nowhere as big as what I see online. And because I didn't encounter any bug, I greatly enjoyed playing it. I think it show how much one more year of development can do.
Really appreciate how you tackled this game, instead of completely bashing it without reason but actually giving us you wholehearted review on it. I forgot how fun your videos were, So If you’ll excuse me imma go watch your other recent videos! Great job man.
I am very glad that you retain the thought of "I just put myself out there." It is more exciting at least for me, as a viewer, to see how you perfect THAT alongside the strange and alien pressures including us, the audience. I have been writing music since I was six and could not retain what you are retaining professionally, so I left it. This speaks to the lack of quality I produced under external pressure. To witness someone navigate the ridiculousness of monetary survival in alternative media spaces in the present is inspiring. That is all I mean to say. It is inspiring to witness what you do man. Cheers!
I can relate with the maturing when it comes to making content. I used to make reviews or whatever they would be called similar in style to that of the Nostalgia Critic and people like that and at one point I realized that even if a movie is "bad" that people still worked hard on it. These days if I were to make videos, I would rather look at the positives instead of just the negatives since it is too easy to focus on the negative’s aspects of things.
The best part about this game is VS mode. If you play as Silver you can grab any object for as long as you keep the button held down (as per usual). However, THIS INCLUDES THE OTHER PLAYER. Which means you can literally freeze your competition AT SPAWN until you BEAT THE LEVEL -provided you only use normal jumps
Don’t forget the obscure games nobody talks about but that I still like to play. There’s probably a lot of people out there who’s first video game wasn’t A Bug’s Life for the PS1 after all. Lol
06 is an awesome game. In the state that it is now, it's still more polished than MOST AAA games are upon release. If it came out in the era of patches, it would've been fine.
This is the biggest case of missed potential in gaming history IMO, it should for sure get a remaster to polish it up so they could deliver us the masterpiece it could’ve been.
When playing Sonic 06 when it first released, I got to Crisis City and realized I wasn’t having fun. So I decided to look up and find other’s opinions on it. Why is that significant? I didn’t even know game reviews were a thing then. Sonic 06 was so bad it pushed a child to discover the concept of game reviews.
To be fair it kind of makes sense that sonic would look out of place on earth considering canonically he’s meant to be an alien according to Sonic Team
Your restaurant analogy is pretty spot on This game is basically -All right, we've gattered all ingredients, we've got the recype, this is gonna be sick Then someone comes in and is like "Allright time to ship all of this"
I actually kind of called it as being the 100th episode of New Game Plus. 20 more games/uploads and you have achieved the accomplishment of recompleting the first 120 games!
Sonic 06 will always have a special place in my heart. When I was like 8 it was the first game we owned on the ps3, and couldn’t figure out how to get to the first world so we just played the multiplayer race mode
Um... Jirard IS aware that New Donk City isn't a planet, right? It's on the same planet as the Mushroom Kingdom, same as every kingdom except for the 3 on the moon.
