that was an amazing review MW, i agree with lots of things that you said ( and its 10 tons of flaws in logic & plot holes) yet, in my personal opinion i liked this series a lot (maybe i enjoyed this more than you did) but that's alright, i think its because of nostalgia+being sonic related contnet and i just skip to the Adventures and Metarex sagas since they're the best part of the series for me
A big problem I had with the Chaos Saga was Zero easily snatching Amy with she HAS been shown to be able to fight. The whole point of her arc in Sonic Adventure was Amy realising she couldn't always rely on Sonic and that running away wasn't always an option. When Birdie gets hurt that's her breaking point and she beats Zero to a pulp. That's well and good in that game...But not in Sonic X. She's ALREADY been shown to be a capable fighter, so her forgetting she can fight and just getting snagged by Zero makes NO sense in the show's continuity. I also didn't like how Chris stole not only Amy's moment during the Shadow Saga, but also Rouge's as well.
@@Schnort Because up till that point Sonic's supporting cast relied on him to be the hero. Tails the sidekick, Knuckles the rival, Amy the damsel in distress, etc.
So I have a confession to make: Episode 18 was my favorite episode of the entire show as a kid. I actually rewatched it recently, and yeah, it's objectively really bad for pretty much all of the reasons you mentioned, but I also was reminded why I had loved it and why it had meant so much to me. I was a pretty awkward kid with poor self-esteem but was smart and gentle growing up, and other kids pretty quickly picked up that I was a prime target for bullying, which meant that the period of my life when Sonic X came out was pretty rough for that and several other reasons that I'd rather not get into. This was the first piece of Sonic media that I had consumed not counting some LCD handheld games that came with McDonald's Happy Meals, and I pretty quickly gravitated and identified with Tails after he was introduced, because I hadn't really seen many characters like him that were smart, awkward, and lacked self-confidence but were also kind. I pretty quickly felt a sort of kinship with him. So then episode 18 happened, and it pretty quickly made him my favorite fictional character of all time (and he's still pretty up there). It revealed that he, like me, had to suffer through being bullied. But he had someone that recognized that he was a good person who was worthy of friendship and kindness and that he had talents worth recognizing and supporting in Sonic. I legitimately cried in the scene where he explained how he had been bullied and how he and Sonic had first met. It gave me such a feeling of hope in a time in my life when I really needed that. That someone would be able to see that I had value and would actually understand me and treat me with kindness besides my family. I'm not really able to look at it objectively, but I still think that that specific sequence was really well done. But the episode around it is awful. I actually kind of like it in a so-bad-it's-funny way and because of the nostalgia I have associated with it, but it's in no way good.
It is a crying shame this video is so underrated. This is exactly the kind of video I’ve always wanted to see about sonic x, an actual good faith thorough breakdown of the characters and story instead of boring moment to moment recap followed by a sentence of analysis of opinion. This is it. You did a great job, and have encouraged me to watch this show just so I can get to those moments of greatness you so excellently dissected.
Oh! I see you hearted this! Since I have your attention I just wanted to say I think I remember you used to have some Archie sonic videos? But I don’t see them anymore. Either way I made a character analysis of Archie sonic and I’d love for you to watch and leave your thoughts since I so enjoy your the way you explain critiques. So if you watch it that would be awesome! It’s called “Why Archie Sonic is the Best Sonic”m.” Take care man
1:29:02 Actually, Shadow addressed this problem when Tails and Cosmo were cornered by him. He said "Perhaps it's better for you not to know" Because SPOILERS Cosmo is a spy for the Matarex and he thought that she would have died in peace without knowing.
What bothers me so much about Chris Thorndyke is that Chris acts like his life is so terrible, that only Sonic can make him happy. I get the concept behind him, they wanted to write him as this lonely rich kid, that is unhappy because his parents are never there for him and money alone doesn't make him happy, kinda like Remy Buxaplenty from Fairly Odd Parents, but this is not how the show wrote him. His parents always run immediately to him, when they found out that he might be could be in trouble, he has a very cool grandpa that builds stuff, an uncle that is a race car racer, and he has three close friends in Helen, Danny, and Frances. I'm sorry, but this kid has a very good life. He comes off more as a Sonic-obsessed fanboy that only cares about that and not the people in his real life.
@@katelynthewhitewerewolf6376except Remy's reasons is that he has both parents and fairy godparents that neglects him and envies Timmy for actually having parent figures that cares for him
Personally, the whole 'time freezing' plot is bullshit when you compare the two worlds' timelines. For every year that passes on Earth, a month passes on Mobius. Wouldn't time just slow down to an average of the two timelines instead of stopping completely? If it was gonna freeze, Mobius would need a timeline running in reverse so that the two timelines cancel each other out.
@@chronoverge in the English dub I’m not sure about the sun though, tails is surprised that Chris created a machine to get there in “only 6 months” to which Chris replies “it’s been 6 years back home”
@@chronoverge I agree. These timelines cancelling each other out wouldn't make sense. Both timelines (on Earth and Mobius) diverge because as a year happens on earth, a month happens on Mobius. Even though Mobius has a slower timeline, Earth and Mobius' timeline still diverges because they never interact with each other after both of the planets' origin. Like you said, the only way for time to stop would be for one of the timelines (probably Earth) to reverse and then they'd cancel. And also, how would time stop all together if just Mobius and Earth converged? What about the other planets in the solar system? Do they somehow converge and cancel each other's timelines out too? What about the stars, galaxies, and other universes/dimensions, do they converge as well? TL;DR - That whole time freezing theory is definitely bullshit. Unless the universe somehow makes itself stop time (which the chances of that are 1 in infinity), time cannot freeze from two planets' converging timeline (even in the Sonic X universe). Also, considering Manga Writer's analysis and questioning of this theory, that just further proves that this theory makes no sense.
@@adcgdsin9320 I do believe Eggman should've been the cause of it because I don't blame Chris for thinking Eggman's doing it considering he's always messing things up.
Exactly! Also, Donut Lord (AKA: Thomas Wachowski) is Sonic's father figure, so he's teaching Sonic to be a better hero because Sonic is still a kid, so it works.
@@splat-trainproductions Not to mention unlike Chris, Tom doesn't needlessly hijack the two Sonic movies. Both movies are still primarily about Sonic. Especially since Tom's arc was already finished in the first movie, so the sequel allowed for Sonic to hold his own weight full time.
I would have been perfectly fine if Chris didn't come back after 50 episodes. The fact that that moment even happened at the end when Chris stopped the time machine for Sonic to enter his own world was a big middle finger to the audience. Sure it's a plot twist but it makes it worse when all that build up with Chris was all thrown out the window. It's one thing if Chris was only a secondary character but since he's the main character, it makes this moment much more infuriating. The story is such a flop because of that moment alone. Well at least he had some use in season 3 so there's that at least
Chris was meant to represent the viewers in Japan. And Sonic isn't very popular over there. They mostly do audience surrogates in animes. Sonic X was primarily influnced by other anime rather than work from the West. It was originally created by The Sonic Team and Tokyo Movie Shinsha Entermainment.
I guess you're unaware that Sega-Japan doesn't like the Mobius idea and that Mobius was a Sega-America idea and Sega-Japan pretty much fears the name Mobius.
1:28:49 In the 4KIDS dub, Tails say that the palm trees are there so that the crew could have morale or keep the motivation. That's a way better explanation than claiming that you need palm trees to fly the ship.
This show had so much potential. Like, a weekly Sonic shonen anime based off the Adventure era games? Thats a fucking great idea. But they just completely ruined it in so many ways from the writing to the animation quality and all that. I really wish they would try this again someday but with a better approach to everything because a Sonic shonen anime is still such a good idea.
You know? If we combined the action, fights and themes of Sonic Prime with the interpretation of the characters that Sonic X gives them, we would have the perfect Sonic show
Didn’t SEGA do the same thing with Forces by mixing Colors and Generations to make a game, but taking the worst parts from each game? I’m honestly happy with the shows we got
This show us the reason I'm a fan of Off Course. That's the band whose songs they kept using. They were really popular in Japan during the late 70s and 80s. They're considered one of the most influential alt-rock bands in the country's history.
I made it through the Shadow Saga discussion without shedding a tear (the soldier's interview and Shadow's true memory of Maria's wish put up a fight, they were so impactful), but once it got to Cosmo's sacrifice and the Molly episode, cue the ugly crying. If anyone can get through those Metarex episodes without feeling anything, I just have to ask them... Who hurt you?
I watched this a lot on 4 kids as a kid. (Kind of hard not to with how 4 kids milked this series for all its worth) And I did eventually check out the subbed version as well. And looking back on it, while I can see some charm here and there, I don't think it's a show worth my time anymore. I don't think it's overall bad, but I don't think it's really all that good ether.
I don't know, I never considered Eggman to be the worst part but instead one of the most entertarning part of the show, and I also found his plan in the Eggmoon saga very cleaver to how he could conquire the world by false diplomacy and instead of just blowing stuffs up. And also that Eggman is much more affably in this version so I can accept him to be more petty and bubbling that in the game. And I never was shocked by cops and humans to be distrusfull with Sonic. I mean, they also the same thing in our world, so I wasn't surprised to changing opinions very fast.
If a mediocre sonic anime has some actual good storytelling (especially the metarix saga) and the recent games can't do blue balls, welp, you know Sonic Team effed up, again. Here's to Frontiers hopefully having a decent story and tone. 🍹
I still think Season 3 is worth watching. It definitely still has a lot of the problems mentioned in the video like the start of the whole arc feeling very forced, and dark sonic just not ever coming up again making that whole episode feel kind of pointless, but I think even the bad parts aren't unwatchable and I think the good parts are some of the best storytelling in the Sonic series. I guess it kind of helps that season 3 is very disconnected from the first 2 seasons so you lose almost nothing from season 3 by skipping the first two seasons. Its definitely not perfect and is a mixed bag in terms of quality, but I think the villains were pretty interesting and the more emotional episodes towards the end were actually some of the best parts of the whole show.
The debut isn't forced at all, it comes with a real cause and reason! And sorry but that's Dark Sonic who deserves to be called "forced". Sonic would never succumb to his negative feelings.
1:41:00 The words said are "Ai shiteru/temo" by reading the lips. They are good at moving the lips for dramatic effect -- I even got surprised to understand the words "tasukete" during the chapter of Momonga watching humans being killed through his mirror since he couldn't listen to them through it, and he got the message clearly. I believe it's a nice touch they didn't make Tails to yell the words in that moment. Still, for all its flaws, it wasn't a great waste of arc.
me when i see the scene where eggman steals a chaos emerald straight out of tails hand and no one would see it:*PROCCEDS TO TYPE IN GOOGLE THIS IS TAILS BLIND OR IS HE JUST DUMB*
To address your criticism about how the Time stopping plot makes no sense, in Episode 39 Eggman claims "If Enough people from our world start showing up there will be friction" so the show is saying that too many people from Sonic's world will cause a problem. It explains why Chris decided to go alone in Season 3 and why it was Fine for Chris to be there in the first place in Season 3, at first it wasn't a problem in the first two seasons because not too many had been showing up from Sonic's world but once it started happening more and more that was when problems arose... but yes Shadow looking like Sonic in Sonic X did make no sense, not much they could've done to get around that though, they couldn't really change his design.
Absurd. Since when the "two worlds" thing was a bad idea? Sorry but Sonic and friends have no reason to live with humans and should have been called Mobians living on Mobius like with Archie Comics, and Sonic X is an excellent explanation of how why they suddenly live with humans.
@@chaossonic1237 Don't care. Mobius was a good name and Sonic and friends can't be simply Earthlings living with ordinary humans, it makes no sense and it's not interesting.
Personally if you watch Sonic X Sub all the way through it’s A+ at best! I fcking hate wat 4kids did cut out so many scenes to make it child friendly 😡 Don’t get me started on CHRIS Fcking hell should not even exist 😂
Here’s an idea about the whole “both Earth and Mobius existed as one” argument could work out. All of the landmarks that are now on Mobius were originally on the combined planet and humans/Mobians lived together. The Chaos Emeralds potentially altered the planet to such a degree that all of the “fantastical elements” (Chao, Mobians, Angel Island, Mystic Ruins, etc.) were transported to another planet parallel to Earth (that being Mobius). Gerald could have been creating Shadow before this change happened and kept all the data on Mobians he had while creating him. Hence, Shadow still looks like a Mobian hedgehog on normal Earth. This is just an idea. No clue how Eggman got to Mobius.
Or… what if Gerald sent a young Eggman to Mobius to study how the planet differed from Earth? This causes Eggman to grow up to be an evil scientist on Mobius and everything to kick off between him, Sonic, and the others.
Well, i watched Sonic X recently, and I really liked it, especially the chaotix🤣🤣. But yeah, there are many dumb parts (which I dont consider, because it would be too much), especially in the Egg moon ark (the only ark I agree to skip, 3 episodes of nothing). I hate 4kids for censoring the deaths, especially Molly. Why 4kids?!!!! So now I made this top tier list of the arks, from the best to the worst: 1. The Metarex Ark, the only one that has a solid story, and has Cosmo. 2. The Shadow Ark, or better, The Sonic Adv. 2 Ark, well if it wasnt for the Metarex this was my favorite because of Shadow, yeah! 3. The Chaos Emerald Ark, I really appreciated the searxhing of the emeralds and the final battle was so cool (I mean: how did Sonic managed to be still alive??). 4. The now world Ark, which was a good beginning, but just that, with the classic battles "Sonic Vs. Eggman"; at least it didnt last for the entire Season 1. 5. The Chaos Ark, well "Sonic. Adv. 1 Ark", maybe too short, but the reason I didnt liked Season 2, except for the Shadow Ark, was because it was composed only by Filler Arks. REALLY?!!!!🔥🔥, but this was still pretty solid imo. 6. The Emerl Ark, made just to make Cream shine a bit, not bad, but too short. Wow, very emotional😑 (well the finale actually was emotional) 7. The Homebound Ark, made to finish the season as fast as possible. And Chris, U LITTLE PIECE OF SHIT, WHAT DID U DO?!!! 8. The Egg moon Ark, I already said whats wrong with this Ark.
This show just shoves bullshit down your throat and you just have to get used to it. You are numbed to how outlandish the plot is until you consider it in retrospect.
As someone who watched the entirety of your "Everything Wrong With Sonic X" video series since the first two episodes came out, I was very disappointed to find out that due to copyright, they can no longer be viewed. For me, the series was a nice parody of the Everything Wrong With.. type videos and was very hilariously enjoyable to watch.
I’m guessing you forgot about the fact that Shadow just straight up Chaos Controlled back to the Blue Typhoon after being launched into space, kinda just thought of it since you kept saying Tails “beat” Shadow in that instance when he definitely did not. Shadow only stopped trying to kill Cosmo after the her being revealed as a spy became known.
I know I'm way late to the party but I think you did a fantastic job with this video, you went over pretty much the entirety of the show and I wish this video got more traction. Even though you said this show wasn't worth coming back to in your opinion at this point I feel obligated to watch it myself! If you ever see this comment, do you think you could send me a watch list of what episodes I should watch and which I could skip for the most streamlined experience?
It's better to have a well constructed video of 2 hours about the anime than taking an existing concept to criticizes everything wrong with in 9 hours. (Also why a reupload? Copyright problems?)
1 problem with what you've said during the Shadow arc The Chaos Emeralds don't belong to Sonic and company At no point in the story is such stated Sure this doesn't change how they still need to the Chaos Emeralds to get home, invalidating that point Along with the fact that the Humans did turn on sonic to quickly (though sonic adventure 2 did the same thing) But I believe it is worth mentioning that the Emeralds aren't Sonics
I have a question, you said you were going to let the "everything wrong with sonic x" there, why are they know in private? these videos about the arcs are good but I want to see again those videos
I grew up watching sonic X on jetix as a kid and the episodes I remembered the most were mostly the around the first 10 or so. After rewatching it I remember so much about the show. Reminds me when sonic x came up I always watched through an episode.
I’m excited to watch this video! I’m a few minutes in however and I will NOT take any Party Hardly (episode 7) slander. Love that episode. Also sue me but I like episode 18 haha. Yeah it’s flawed but I like how it develops Tails and Chris’s relationship and for that reason I’m biased towards it lol Edit: I think a lot of people blow out of proportion how bad Sonic X is. Sure it’s not very good objectively, but people treat it like it’s the worst thing ever like…y’all if Sonic X is the worst thing you’ve ever seen you need to watch more TV lmao. I appreciate it for what it is but it’s definitely FAR from perfect.
one of the biggest mistakes they made was making Earth and Sonic's world separate when in the games you can clearly see they're one and the same. So why?
@@fightingmedialounge519 I never liked the two worlds idea should've made their worlds the same in Sonic X that way Sonic and Chris won't be separated forever.
That's not a mistake. It makes more sense to explain why Sonic and friends are with humans instead of just bringing them in the human world just like that as in games. And sorry but Sonic and friends have strictly nothing to do with ordinary humans and that's perfectly logical to call them aliens.
It's a mess for sure, but for Sonic show standards, it's a good watch, especially since the few good parts of it is arguably the best Sonic content in term of plot.
Well, Sonic X, in its bests parts, joins Frontiers, Dream Team, Black Knight, Secret Rings, Unleashed, 06, Heroes and Shadow, Riders games (except the 3rd game), in terms of best Sonic plots.
I did say this in the Top and Bottom 5 video, but with Episode 50, if they had to leave Sonic behind for some kind of tension, I would've been fine if it happened, but Eggman was the reason I mean he gave Sonic the chip the machine needed, so why not have it programmed to deactivate to leave Sonic behind?
This guy understands nothing to Sonic anyway. There are many guys in the Sonic community who like to take the best parts of Sonic to call them the "worst" ones.
30:22 I could be wrong but it might have happened this way so that kids watching the show didn't start disrespecting authority by trying to copy Sonic. I know this was the case in many old shows for kids.
50:20 Bold of you to assume a Japanese show airing before a 2:00 AM timeslot would confirm anyone's part of the LGBTQ+ community. Besides, the UK Sonic comics already have bisexual Amy, so it wouldn't be without precedent! EDIT: Oops, I perpetuated that myth regarding Japanese broadcasting standards and practices in regards to LGBTQA+ content. I dunno what they were like in the early 2000s, so please ignore my misinformation, I am a dummy.
@@maryafantalia8614 No, it comes from the Greek island of Lesbos! Denizens of Lesbos are known as "Lesbians", the most famous of which is probably the ancient Greek poet Sappho. While most of her poems only survive as fragments, most of them are about how down bad she is for various women or her interactions with her female partners/lovers. Because of Sappho, the word "lesbian" was adopted by female-identifying people who felt sexual and/or romantic attraction towards other female-identifying people as a label, or something like that. There's probably some papers out there that can explain it better than I can. Tangle the Lemur, Whisper the Wolf, and Nicole the Holo-Lynx are Sonic characters that have either been confirmed to be lesbians or have only expressed attraction towards women and are heavily lesbian-coded, due to SEGA allegedly not wanting to have any Sonic characters in romantic relationships right now. I can't remember if Tekno the Platypus is a lesbian or bi... Anyways! That's a quick-and-dirty summary of the origins of the word "lesbian" and how it applies to the Sonic franchise.
You compare Sonic X to Archie Comics? You're serious? Archie Comics is literally its own delusion while Sonic X is faithful to the real universe of games! And yes, it's worth it, because yeah, its best parts are really good.
@maryafantalia8614 "faithful to the real universe"? Vaguely, but not always. It branches off into its own tangents to. When I compared them, I meant in the sense that sitting down and indulging in them feels like a daunting, unappealing task. Sonic X is hard to sit through, just as Archie. They both have their highs and lows, but again: not really worth it in the end.
@@riyocko Sorry but it is not VAGUELY faithful. Characters are respected, many games are adapted, and we have a last epic story recovering the importance of the nature Sonic searchs to protect since that is one of his biggest pillars in the franchise. And no, not in the end precisely. Sonic X has many moments that deserve to be seen and congratulated, and that's in its last episodes we notice it precisely.
@@maryafantalia8614 See, but you could say the same thing about Sonic Archie in the sense that things CAN be rewarding. It's the matter of "you just gotta sit through the rough bits, trust me it'll get better." I'm not saying Sonic X is ATROCIOUS, or shouldn't have been made, or anything along those lines. Just as reading Archie, watching Sonic X will not give you any NEW information about the canon world of Sonic, at least when following the games. You can still enjoy Sonic X and its writing - same as such with Archie. All I'm saying, is that personally, I don't think it's worth it. It's a matter of opinion. Archie has strong moments. Sonic X has strong moments. But it's much easier to see it in a critical lens when there's not a layer of nostalgia that you're looking through it with.
@@riyocko Sonic X gives an information about who and how characters are, with some backstory elements like Knuckles' role of Master Emerald's guardian. Plus, why a non-canon series should give new information about the canon world? You complain for something pointless that isn't even supposed to happen. Why always finishing by "just a matter of opinion" when you just started the problem by criticizing? Everyone says a rude critic then try to save themselves by saying "just an opinion" seconds later. It would be time to admit you're wrong instead of just trying to escape the fact you should never have been rude.
The 4Kids dub destroying the Soldier explaining Maria's death gets a passing mention but nothing on how they equally destroyed Molly and Cosmo's deaths? Fun Fact: The Metrix Saga only existed because of how popular the series became in America with the dub. The season was made for America which makes the fact that 4kids still kidified it kinda even more shitty. I mean, I kinda get it, the Arc was very dark, but it sucks all that work, and animation and writing was put into by the original developers only for it to be neutered when sent over to the audience that gave the series a final season, really suck. the Anime was just "meh" in popularity in Japan. So much so that the original Japanese version of the season is just now being properly aired in Japan. I grew up with the 4kids Dub so I have a soft spot for it, purely because of nostalgia, but I REALLY wish the show would get a Redub, with accurate translations and no dumbing down and editing deaths and innuendos.
Actually the season was made for International Market. Not just America. France premiered Season 3 first with had uncensored scenes and retained original music. The Japanese version for S3 was made through Chinese VCDs and streaming services until the TV airing in 2020.
I know that 4Kids messed up some of the story of Sonic X (thanks to 4Kids being a derivative of FOX Corporation; yes _that_ FOX), but I still commend the English voice actors for working with what they had. I’m very certain that they would have voice acted the full, uncut version of Sonic X if they had the chance back then.
The only think what I like about the show is sonic and his freinds all the human characters are annoying like they want to get involved with everything like try to take the chaos emeralds they don’t belong to the the human characters they belong to sonic
