That’s what many people thought that it was a name that was derived from Scotts, however the name Barra was from Bambara people some of them where doing trade in the late 1700’s- 1800’s moving from Mali through Senegal to Gambia until they arrived in Essau and settled, however while they were in Essau,Europeans were doing trade along the river Gambia and will often anchored their boats in Essau (Satay Kungoto or Kung- meaning the top, head or upper part of the town in Mandinka),because their where Europeans doing trade and they needed their products to be loaded or unloaded on or from the boat, the Bambara people living in Essau will woke up on the morning when asked what they are doing or where they are going they will reply in Bambara “Mbehta Barranyinila”meaning they are going to look for work,Barra in Bambara means work or in Mandinka, then they will head to Satay Kungoto, later the locals just decided to called it Barra instead of Kungoto or kung,so the original name of Barra was kung or Kungoto and the original name of fort bullen is Tattoto.
