Sonnet 129
Th' expense of spirit in a waste of shame
Is lust in action, and till action, lust
Is perjured, murd'rous, bloody, full of blame,
Savage, extreme, rude, cruel, not to trust,
Enjoyed no sooner but despisèd straight,
Past reason hunted, and no sooner had,
Past reason hated as a swallowed bait
On purpose laid to make the taker mad;
Mad in pursuit, and in possession so,
Had, having, and in quest to have, extreme;
A bliss in proof, and proved, a very woe;
Before, a joy proposed; behind, a dream.
  All this the world well knows, yet none knows well
  To shun the heaven that leads men to this hell.

These have all been so great. Any chance of "In Flanders Fields" for Memorial Day? Thanks so much for sharing these. They have caused me to revisit some old literary friends.

I am glad you've enjoyed these. It has been a pleasure for me to do them. I haven't memorized Flanders Fields. I will consider working on it for next year.

@@PopHaydn I honestly just thought about it today, and realized I ought to have asked a while ago. My favorite in this series is still Ozymandias - I've always loved the poem, and your version takes me right to that statue through your eyes. It's been terrific, as I said. I've dug out three volumes of poetry because you did this - civilization creeps closer each time I open the cover.
