In this video I show you more sonoff wifi smart switch models such as the Sonoff S20, POW, and TH16. Learn how to use these smart switches in your home automation setup.
FAQ:
1) Is this compatible with iOS (iPhone) devices?
Yes, the iOS eWeLink app can be found at itunes.apple.c...
2) Is this compatible with Amazon echo (Alexa)?
Yes, a tutorial can be found at www.itead.cc/b...
3) I have an extension cord/appliance that has three prongs (live, neutral, ground). How do I wire up the sonoff?
Any appliance or device that has a metal chassis needs the ground wire to be considered safe. Appliances that have plastic chassis are safe (in the US) with only live and neutral. If you need the ground wire, I would suggest getting the Sonoff Pow model which has three terminals to accommodate the ground wire. www.itead.cc/s....
4) I don't feel safe having to modify an extension cord. Is there a sonoff switch that I can just plug right into the wall and use?
Yes, it can be found here www.itead.cc/s...
5) Where can I buy these for less than $5 and how long does shipping take?
The Sonoff can be purchased from the manufacturer's website. The price before shipping (at the time of this video) is $4.85. I believe they ship from China which may take several weeks to arrive where you live. I ordered several that took about 2 weeks to arrive in the US. Here is a link www.itead.cc/s...
If you don't want to wait a couple of weeks and want to support byte sized, use this Amazon affiliate link:

6) Where can I download the android app?
Android eWeLink app: play.google.co...

just before |black friday" i ordered 2 Dots as they had a special going on Amazon.. whilst trying to learn the dot, i came across your video and ordered a single switch (again, from Amazon) for around $9 per switch....... I have since added 4 more Gen 2's and 2 Gen 3 echos to my home as well as almost a dozen (yes, 11 so far) of the Sonoff switches.. they now take me less than 5 mins to wire up, program and name the device It will control .. everything is very easy to do.. so much so that its has quickly become second nature for myself and grandson to use the switches in conjunction with the echo dots, Thank you for making an excellent video on this subject..

From a Sonoff review on Amazon: Issue: The Sonoff switch reports into eWeLink in China where it apparently resides for control, then Alexa must talk to the China APP to perform. When the Sonoff switch goes offline I now figure it has something to do with China. Not real keen on my home automation talking to China so much. Amazon Alexa needs to figure out how to use these smart devices direct to Alexa without the going to China software. Potential Solution: You can flash it with custom firmware to not be on eWeLink but you you need a Smart hub, ie SmartThings to control them over your network. Alexa then ties into SmartThings. Works rather well and stable. Please consider making a video to describe flashing Sonoff firmware to not be on eWeLink. Thank you in advance.

I think Vesync plugs are down to just over $7.00/each on Amazon. Not as flexible lacking Tesmota but workable without having to splice a power wire. Don't know if anyone knows if your insurance might have trouble if you're splicing power wires in your home or not? Good video though so thanks!

Regarding the ground wire, i have used the simple version of the sonoff, and i stipped the extention cord. i only cut the live and nutral wire. i dont cunt the ground wire. this by making sure that the sonoff fits in the gap between the cuts. then wiht a bit of fumbling it all fits in the casing and you connect the wires.

What happens if I connect the live wire to the neutral screw, will it damage the device, would it still work ? reason for my question is that in my country the wall outlets dont have a standard for wiring like in the US, and it is posiible that I end up pluging to the wrong wire.

Nice technology but keep in mind that it is not approved for use in the USA or Canada (i.e. missing UL or CSA mark on the unit) and modifying an extension cord will void the certification of the cord. This is the main reason you can't buy it in stores. At the very least I recommend a dielectric test to make sure the insulation breakdown limit is safe and the plastic meets the flame test in North American standards. I plan to do a full evaluation once I get my unit to make sure it meets all the requirements.
@pierredoucet4556
@pierredoucet4556 5 лет назад
@@AndyDramm the plastic badly fails the flame test; if the PC board overheats, arcs or sparks for any reason the plastic will propagate the flame instead of attenuating it. This result would not pass any standard either in Europe under CE or in North America under UL or CSA standards. To pass this test without changing the plastic you would have to install the device in a flame retardant enclosure or spray the inside with flame retardant paint. I hope this helps you. Best regards
@AndyDramm

Pierre Doucet thanks for the insight Pierre. I have a new found respect for the UL and CSA standards. They’re not just a bunch of bureaucratic regulations.
@pierredoucet4556
@pierredoucet4556 5 лет назад
@@AndyDramm Glad to hear it; Some parts of regulations, codes, and standards are not always reasonable. The test engineers and inspectors have to interpret it correctly. Please connect with me on linkedin (linkedin.com/in/pierredoucet3). --- The SonOff enclosure did pass the dielectric test of 1200V and had a very small leakage current of 29 microamps (a PASS for that test), but a few components are not recognized (so its indeterminable in terms of failure mode and reliability). If you use a SonOff, please put it in an electrical box.

Thanks! I bought their new POW R2, The PCB terminal block has "quick connect" snaps instead of screws - i got the wires in, but i am not really comfortable using quick connectors in 110v high amp usage. Can you comment on how these work- i don't want to break the plastic sliders on mine. I really like the positive feel of the old style screws! This video did not seem to cover this topic.
@bytesizedengineering
@bytesizedengineering 6 лет назад
I am using the older POW model in this video. The quick connect style should be fine as long as there is some strain relief clamp on the extension cord itself. In other words, if you pull on the cord you want the plastic enclosure clamping down on the cord instead of relying on the quick connect.

Your comment about metal appliances vs. plastic appliances, and how it relates to the ground wire is false. A perfect example of that is most toasters. I would simply stick with the rule that if the device you are trying to switch has a grounded plug, then you need the ground wire, and if it doesn't, then you don't. Also, you can buy two-prong extension cords to use with the Sonoff Basic, to eliminate someone plugging in a grounded plug into a non-grounded extension cord. Another option is to use a grounded extension cord, but don't cut the ground wire. Simply cut out a large enough section of the hot and neutral wires to fit in the Sonoff Basic.

The toaster thing is very odd in the US. In most other parts of the world a toaster MUST be grounded . in the US, it MUST NOT... But the US allows metal lamps with no ground and only single insulation too... 'class zero' appliances.
@pietgdgc
@pietgdgc 5 лет назад
True, that is the easiest explination. the other indicator van be found on the device. most of the devices without a ground wire have a symbol on the with two squares in each other. that means double isolated. those appliances usually have no groud pin the connector.
@jmanuelforero3850
@jmanuelforero3850 5 лет назад
The US has a poor standard when it comes to electric plugs and wires compare to the UK, where all plugs must be fused accordingly depending on the appliance. Plugs are strong and can be plug and unplugged with ease. They sit on the socket flat and do not go wonky under just gravity. I do not understand why the US chose such a puny plug system and worse the industry in general varies in standards from extreme to extreme. Even worse, many other countries have inherited the US standards. How safe is US$1.67 extension cord for 4 devices with no fuse and vey thing wire? (the one shown in the previous video)

I'm not plugging anything into my wall socket that lacks the "Underwriters Laboratories (UL)* certification. I like your products but have them interdependently tested!! Furthermore, Is Wi-Fi really the best communication protocol for devices? Pros: Higher Security aka encryption but another node on your network (point of attack), Bandwidth, Bi-Directional traffic (power usage & ON/OFF state), 2.4 GHz "range" would be acceptable. Cons: Increased network activity, 433 MHz would have better range (lower device security but it's kept off my actual network) it would also need a WiFi - 433 MHz hub. I'm not saying Wi-Fi isn't the way to go, I'm just asking for a consensus. I think Powerline (IEEE 1901) would be a good starting point, considering the ready availability of mains power. It has security (pairing) and it can go a damn impressive range albeit with lower signal strength "all it's doing is switching" Security is NEEDED in my opinion.. I don't want someone randomly switching on or off appliances throughout my house. PS. I really like my wired network setup how it is, my access points only serve the wireless devices they need to I don't really know. As for those people in the FAQ asking about the ground lead. Well just don't snip the ground wire and run it around the sonoff.

You can have multiple devices plugged into multiple Sonoff switches which can all be turned on at once or one by one through the smartphone app of a Sonoff control panel. Honestly the app is probably more fun where you can group any number of switches to be switched on at once. ;)

With the Sonoff Basic WiFi Wireless Switch + IP66 are you recommending to use the cheap ext. cord not to cut into the original cord of the lamp coffee pot etc? secondly, with using the ext. cord are three (or more) receptacles would be consider the same "switch" correct? so if I say, " Okay google turn on my lamp?" Any and all items plugged into that modified ext. cord would essentially turn on correct?
@bytesizedengineering
@bytesizedengineering 5 лет назад
You can certainly cut the cord of the appliance, I just choose to use an extension cord to give me the flexibility of plugging in various appliances without rewiring anything. You could plug more than one thing and have multiple things turn on, just make sure that the sum of the currents doesn't exceed the 10A rating of the sonoff

Say, I have a lamp attached to the sonoff, what happens when the wifi is off, but power is on?

I have a question: What if you don't actually want a "smart" device, but rather want to be in control, and not be limited by the features, or lag thereof, the manufacturer see fit to implement? For example, I want a device, which will fetch some data, locally, from the internet, cloud, or whatever. Then I want to decide how this data should be interpreted, and how to act upon it. Further more, while not essential, it would be nice to be able to monitor power consumption, and to be able to connect one or more sensor, of your choice. As of yet, I have found no product that can do this. Many certainly have the needed hardware, but the advanced usage, is nowhere to be found, presumably because it is assumed that people are not clever enough to make use of them. Use case example: I don't know if this is a thing in the US, but it is certainly is in Europe, variable hourly price of electricity, and there is a lot of money to be saved, if you do a bit of think. A good idea is your fridge and or freezer. The can usually be turned of for hours, without it having severe consequences, so you might want to check the prices regularly, and turn them off, when the electricity is expensive, on the other hand, you might also want to have one or more temperature sensors connected, as a preclusion, and lastly, you might want to check if it is actually running, and wait to turn it off, until it is not, to ensure that it can last the required amount of time, before reaching a critical temperature. Of course, the best result will require fetching the current prices, and perhaps prices for the entire day, so you may conclude which hours are the worst/best, pricewise. I would very much like this, and I would very much like, to not have to create this device, my self.

Hi, I would like to ask whether can the SONOFF TH16 control the air conditioner by adjusting its temperature according to the room temperature?
@typxxilps
@typxxilps 5 лет назад
How should a simple switch interact with an air conditioning? There's only 1 way: the TH16 measures temperature and compares the current temperature you want to have (at the point of the th16) like 22°C. If the measured temperature is higher your 22°C target the th16 gives power to your AC ... and if temperatures drops below 22°C it stops the power for the AC. There's just 1 input from you: target temperature And of cause it depends on where you put that th16. In front of the ac in the cold air flow it will stop a lot earlier than on the back of the AC or at 2m height.
