@@edzeljereza8234 Mr Portnoy ? You mean the one and only *Mike Portnoy* ? You say Mike Portnoy is playing the drums, here? A WHOLE SONG all in 4/4 ? It's *not possible* mate : Mike Portnoy cannot stand to stay in 4/4 signature more than 4 bars. Everyone know that.
Nothing respectful about it at all. The thing that made Pink Floyd, and Gilmour so unique was lost in this version, the solos they do serve the songs, not Gilmour's ego. The guy in this video does it as a self-serving measure, as is the case with many of these musicians. You folk lap up any old shit.
@@profbawbag6604you are wrong. This guy and the whole band are perfectly respectful to the song. You sound like you could do better. Please post your videos big shot.
@@Rrronniedee Not about what i can and can't do. I can't make cars, but i can still complain about whether a car is good or bad. Your logic is nonsense. The guy overcooks the solo. If you know anything about Pink Floyd at all, you know the guitar solos serve the songs, not the guitarist. The guy in this video using the solo as a self-serving solo. Something Gilmour never did/does. Listen to some PF and get back to me. You obviously know nothing about them outside of watching this nonsense in the above video. In a nutshell: Gilmour is not a "oh, look at me" guitarist, yet this guy is. Missing the entire point of what made PF great. You obviously don't get it. That's ok, you just like modern self-serving musicians.
@@profbawbag6604 everyone on that stage likes Bumble's work. I'm a musician....you are obviously NOT. Therefore, myself and all the guitar players that I know suggest you take your self serving and incorrect opinions and learn something about music. To say I "obviously" don't know anything is so pathetic of you. Take your head outa yet arse.
@@profbawbag6604 you are obviously not a musician. Take your head outa yer arse. We musicians know what we are talking about. You know very little compared to us or the real musicians on that stage. Keep trying to sound like you are some kinda pro if it makes you feel cool.......
@@KalosPVP The rest of the band is giving plenty of room for Bumblefoot to shred as the guitar solo will always be the climax of Comfortably Numb. But you don't get to hear Portnoy doing double bass triplets or Billy Sheehan tapping at 200 BPM nor using his signature overdrive thick bass tone.
@@KalosPVP totally did, based it well to start with on DG's solo, then after that he couldn't even continue the same style to complete it. I guess you can only mimic someone else's emotions to a point, after that it becomes clear that you don't have the same feeling.
Gilmour says he plays the first solo note for note, and the 1st half of the 2nd solo note for note, then improvises the 2nd half of the 2nd solo, playing what he feels. That's what happened here too! It's amazing! 😍
@@davidnelson5474 he sang back up vocals on Scenes from a memory. Most clearly in "fatal tragedy" also he has a demo where he sings through the entire "The best of times"
Without a doubt the best version I've seen. It included the iconic solo almost untouched, then he let himself go but always respectfull to the original. Very emotional and flawless
Dear Sons of Apollo, can you please thank Mr. Bumblefoot for playing the leads to perfection and to the original spirit of the song. He didn't make it crazy odd or over-the-top, just plain and simply great. I appreciated his interpretation as well as the rest of the band. Spot on gentlemen, spot on.
He didn't feel the need to sacrifice the familiar, beloved solo in order to make himself look good or anything, and that's commendable- he could easily have played totally different stuff but up to where the song would normally fade out, he did it note for note then added extra to the coda; I applaud him for his restraint and faithfulness
Did you not hear the 2nd half of the solo? Original spirit of the song replaced by crazy overplaying. It was still good, but it could have been great like the rest.
This is the version I always enjoy listening to. One badass band covers another. Pink Floyd has been my favorite band for almost 50 years, and Comfortably Numb is and will forever be my favorite song. I've heard a few versions, but your cover is brilliant. Ron, Billy, Mike and Derrick, you are all absolute masters at your instruments. Ron, your leads at the end bring tears of joy to my eyes. Thank you so much for this cover !
Um baterista que canta Pink Floid, que sai do Dream Theater e faz um excelente trabalho em inúmeras bandas é simplesmente fenomenal. Um salve para o estimado Portnoy!
@@MrBiteme39 yes, he didn't try to improve the solo after the original ended. And he sure didn't improve it with that end rubbish. It would have taken talent he does not possess to extend the solo in the same style that the song required.
You know that it is about how Roger felt after a doctor had to inject him with a sedative before one of the shows since he was coked out of his mind and couldn’t perform, and the lyrics are basically describing the sedative-induced haziness after drug use? What message could it possibly have? It’s a musical miracle, and has a wonderful mood, and probably the best guitar solo in the existence. I love this song, heck I even play it myself, but I wouldn’t go as far as saying it has a message for generations.
@@Alpysf Well, he talks about his childhood, and I think he is trying to get back that sense of lost wonder about the world or at least numb away the pain of it.
@Cletus Anfernee Jackson I heard a lot of emotion, personally. It was his own interpretation, and you're allowed to interpret a solo any way you want. You're also allowed to hate it, of course. ;)
@@colz848 Eh, not gonna get all douchey like Cletus, but I do think one thing in a lot of modern Prog that does bug me is there is a lot of technical wankery in place of simple melody. Just my opinion, none of the "additions" actually in any way improved the solo. But for the record, I also can't get in to Yngwie, Dream Theater, etc. Because I feel too often they substitute technical wizardry for actual songwriting. Complex seldom actually adds emotion, because emotions are in themselves pretty simple. *shrugs* so, Different strokes, different folks.
Amazing solo from Ron. One of the best players alive and so under recognized. Respected the great melodic phrases and then added his crazyness at the perfect time.
@@axkmster You're funny guy. I play for 30 years now, For sure i've never been a blues player... Over the years, my perception of music has drasticly changed. Shred tells me musically absolutely nothing. It yust shows me motorical abbilities..... Sorry if i hurt your shredders pride. Modern rock has become a competition, who can play more notes in a single interval....
My favorite song of all time! This version is astonishing and best cover I've heard of song. Portnoy hits it out of the park on vocals and Bumblefoot's solo is incredible!
@@TomMcMahonMUSIC anyone who can step in for John Wetton with any degree of success can obviously sing extraordinarily well… especially while simultaneously stepping into Steve Howe’s guitar parts. Portnoy has a unique vocal contribution also, as he shows well as bottom end of the Flying Colors harmonies.
@@Anaximander29A in fact it sounds ten times better than the original one, this way...What you want to say is that Gilmour can't play second part of the solo like Ron...it's ok...the song is a music legend anyway...
@@Anaximander29A Your opinion sucks. He could easily play it just like Gilmour, but there's no excitement for him in doing that so he adds his own touch of shred to keep it fresh and interesting and to make it his own. I'm sick of you melodic solo gatekeepers that think any bit of technical ability and speed instantly means bad. I appreciate all styles and speeds of guitar playing and this was goddamn beautiful to me, to each their own I guess.
@@lumpy9964 I guess I was a bit too harsh with "that solo sucked big time"... I just don't like it that much. But it's definitely not as good as Gilmour on the Pulse live show. "He could easily play it just like Gilmour, but there's no excitement for him in doing that.." If that is true than this just shows that something is fundamentally wrong with this guitar player. 1. It's about the music, not about the musician's ego, 2. the arc of suspense and phrasing in the said live version from Pink Floyd is insane, if there would be no excitement in it for him than he wouldn't understand a whole lot about music. But seriously I doubt that. I bet that he knows he can't play it quite as good as Gilmore and the shred was definitely just a fan service for all you nerds. I am absolutely not against "technical" playing, but if someone does it just for the sake of it then it sounds absolutely cringe to me.
The guitar solo is good, and I don't have a problem with all the shred playing towards the end as long as the emotional playing comes first. The singing here is not filled with the sense of pain and depression needed. This is still one of the very best covers of this song.
He is really a Great Player . and very detail oriented guitarist as noted on his rendition of Lines in the sand which he even used a petrucci leak from Once in a lifetime dvd ( or live shows at that period )
Comment section for this video should be closed. There's too much noise here. Just fucking shut up, and Listen! Also, before criticizing Godly people, be on their level first.
That outro solo was phenomenal and shows how smart of a guitarist Ron is. He could set the fretboard on fire if he wanted to, but he knows the value of a simple and effective melody too. The result in that solo was a brilliant emulation of the style of the original song with just enough of his own touches and flashes of skill to make it unique without overpowering it.
This song is a masterpiece itself and so many have tried to cover it and in fact nearly destroyed it (see the Dream Theater & Queensryche attempt, where song was nearly murdered by Queensryche guys and saved by Mr Petrucci solo!) Here, I am delighted hearing Mr Portnoy singing first part and then Mr Thal solo (starting with slide on fretless neck) simply blew up my mind!
That is by far the best Comfortably Numb cover I've ever heard. Maybe the best Floyd cover period. Though Shine On by Transatlantic was also damned good. Excellent job!
It was phenomenal listening to Mike Portnoy sing. And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, Bumblefoot started improvising. This is undoubtedly one of the best covers of this song.
the magic starts at 04:34 . Anything before was foreplay. Real fans know, however, someone new may not, that Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal played in Guns and Roses, after Slash left. Axl picked him for a reason.
Wow!! This is absolutely fantastic. Never heard this sound so good from another band. Great job you guys and I'm so glad I ran across this. Can't stop listening to this.
@Cletus Anfernee Jackson Just shut it. Please. You think this is played without emotion? There is tons of it. Just pull your head out of that smelly cavity and listen
I love the way that each member of the band acknowledges each others ability and skill with their instruments. No egos involved: just respect for each other.
I was super disappointed when I heard this tune and dream on will not be on the Blu Ray but now I'm ok after 9 minutes of awesomeness ! The best cover of comfortably numb I've ever heard !!
Mike Portnoy🤯 Nailed This💯 I don’t care much for Covers & Rarely listen. ESPECIALLY on My All “Time” Favorite Band Pink Floyd (Gilmour 🎸🙌🏼w-or without Waters) 💭Being that Mike Portnoy(drums 🙌🏼) & Billy Sheehan (Bass 🤯🙌🏼) of one of my favorite bands WINERY DOGS were doing this it had to be worth a shot. Mike Rules This Song💯 I knew he & Billy could sing but Mike P. 🤯amazed me! Amazing performance by the whole band! 🎸🔥Solo!
Not being a fan of bands covering other artists..this is one of the few exceptions to that rule..This Pink Floyd song cover is a complete Masterpiece !
Absolutely stunning cover of one of my all time favorite songs. I always get the shivers when Pink Floyd / David Gilmour play the final guitar solo. Sons of Apollo succeeded in giving me the shivers at the same moment.
No doubt David's version on Pulse is the ultimate, many try but very few succeed in covering this musical masterpiece, but this is as close to perfection as you can get!
I agree with your comment about the Pulse version. It is my favorite of my favorite song. This one is the best of the non Gilmour attempts that I have heard. It's different and there is a lot of shredding, but you never get lost in what song your hearing. I enjoyed the energy and obvious talent of the band and especially the guitar player.
i was about to really bash on this video. I was like, "Why the F---- are they playing this so fast? it's not meant to be a fast song!"........ then i realized i had the speed still at 1.5x from a previous video. Now its great. lol
Just heard this for the first time last night. This is incredible music. I've listen to everything of SoA I can find here on RU-vid. Where have y'all been all my life? I look forward to the next release.
Christ what a performance. Gives me the shivers knowing the 'Original' from past events. Celebration of true admiration of the composers. Thank you for sharing!
You guys nail this song just like the original Pink Floyd. For a moment I thought it was David. Holy moly tat was a great cover performance. Best version I have ever heard. Tks guys t was comfortably soothing. Pink Floyd tat for bringing this song to Earth. My oh my
