Embarking on an epic journey from the vibrant Stagecoach festival in Indo California, we meandered through the majestic Redwoods, each step drawing us closer to our northern destination. As the snow-capped summertime mountains of the pacific northwest loomed into view, a sense of anticipation washed over us; Seattle was near. Our pilgrimage culminated in the heart of a Seattle woodshop, where we were graced with the presence of the Sons of Rainier, fresh after a performance for Dean Johnson's album premiere. This supergroup, originally the brainchild of Devin Champlin from Bellingham, captivated us with their unique blend of folk-alt-vagabond-country, infused with doo-wop harmonies and introspective songwriting that speaks to the outdoors, longing between vast distances, and the oscillations between affection and loneliness. Stripped back to its essence, their music revealed a complexity in simplicity that held us spellbound. It was an intimate mini-concert that could have serenaded us through the night, promising that a return visit for more soulful melodies from this talented ensemble is not just desired, but necessary.
