Sony 1 4x Teleconverter - Is It Any Good

In this video I test the Sony 1.4x Teleconverter/Extender on the FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM lens using the A7RIV and a few videos using the A7SIII. I wanted to see if the 560mm f/6.3 I get with the teleconverter on the FE 100-400mm GM lens was as good as the FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G lens. I don’t normally like to use a teleconverter so take a look to see if this Sony 1.4x teleconverter changes my mind.

Good observations, I'll agree and glad you mentioned the a7iii which is what I have. I have the 100--400 GM and a 1.4 teleconverter. I am happy with the results, but I notice a small hit in autofocus speed and acquisition at full zoom, and also a small hit in image quality at full zoom as well. But overall I am very happy and realize that the limitations of the a7iii in terms of focus and resolution may contribute to my results. Again, i am happy enough that I have no intentions of selling the 1.4 teleconverter as I know that when / if I upgrade my camera body it should perform even better. Thank you for the review.

Glad I could help. It’s a good extender as extenders go but it does lose a little even though a lot of people won’t see it. You can get some nice photos with it but I’m just too much of a pixel peeper. Thanks for watching.

I have a 2.0TC, I also use 200-600mm, my camera is A7R4, 2.0TC does affect the image quality, so I am now hesitant to buy 1.4TC. But I am also a video shooter. I found that using 2.0TC has little effect on the video quality. I use A7S3.

I always look forward to your videos I'm a fan! but I must say I disagree on this one. I have followed you for a long time and we seem to have had similar gear. I started with the canon 70d and 400mm f5.6, then the 80d and 100-400 mk2 both with the better beamer. Then I switched to Sony, the a7r3 and 100-400 I was blown away by the resolution but perhaps it was full frame and 42mp (by the way I was gutted for you when your lens fell off). I drove the whole length of the Pyrenees mountains photo'ing birds and butterflies and couldn't be happier. Then Sony announced the 200-600.... I pre ordered it and sold my 100-400 before the 200-600 arrived. When it did what a mistake, the contrast, the colours, the sharpness not in the same league. You can crop the 100-400 to the level of the 200-600 and the results are better, also with the 1.4 TC combination the 100-400 in my opinion is better. So I sold the 200-600 and bought the 100-400 again, a hard lesson, cost me a couple of grand. I also own the 2x TC and on the 100-400 not good about the same as the 1.4TC on the 200-600 I will be selling it. This is just my experience but I'm happy now..... What do you think of the canon 100-500mm????

That surprises me. You’ve seen the photos I’ve shot with the 200-600mm and they are sharp as a tack. I do know it’s possible to get a bad copy of the lens because the first Canon 7DII I owned Canon had to replace. The AF on it just sucked. I thought I was going to have to eat it but because I was a member of Canon’s Professional Group they finally replaced it. I’ve said before I had an exceptional copy of this lens. I don’t know if you follow Mark Smith but he gave the FE 200-600mm G a fairly bad review but I think Sony sent him a new one because he is still shooting with it occasionally. He also has the $13,000 600mm f/4 so he has the best they make. The 1.4x extender is not bad at all which is what I said. I just don’t like extenders. In my case the 200-600mm G lens is as good as the 100-400mm GM with the extender in my opinion. Sorry you had a bad experience with that lens. Unfortunately, I can only review what I have and my copy is excellent. Quite frankly it surprised me. Thanks for watching.

When I. purchased the 100400GM I used it on my a7riii with great results. I was primarily photographing surfers at the time and could not be happier. I later saved enough money to purchase the Sony A1 and now use the combo to photograph birds. The 100400GM lives on the a1 and a 24-70 2.8 is mounted on the a7riii. Last fall I went to Yellowstone and my son-in-law was shooting with the a7IV and 200-600. I was shooting much later than him due to his low light issues and focusing with that combo. I could not be happier with my combo and think the 100-400 is much underrated.

I recently bought a new 100-400 GM and when mounted on my A7IV and A7RV there is a slight rotational wobble (clockwise-counterclockwise) which I never experienced in another lens. Also tried it on my good old A7III and on that it does not wobble. I notice the wobble when holding the lens and the body handheld and rotating the zoom ring (smoothest setting) Anyone else noticed this? Is it normal?

When I first bought my 100-400mm GM lens it was a loose fit on my A7RIII and A7RIV. I eventually accidentally hit the release button and the lens fell off the camera and landed right on the lens mount. $900 later I got it back and the new lens mount was tight. Be very careful or you could suffer the same fate. I would contact Sony and send it back for a check. The lens shouldn’t be that loose. Good luck. BTW, I made a couple of RU-vid videos about the lens falling off my camera.

Alan you may be right. The shore birds change so much in Florida it is difficult to tell some times. There are generally a lot of Sandwich Terns at Ft. Desoto so I thought that’s what they were. I do better at photography than I do sometimes with bird ID. 😃 Thanks for watching.
