Great analysis, as always! I recently rented the Leica 90mm SL F2 lens and attached it to my Lumix S1. I have to say, the lightness and small size of the lens was great for using at a wedding all day. The image quality was superb and F2 was plenty of bokeh for me. I think it focuses pretty close too if I remember right so that creamed my backgrounds even more. Now, to come up with $5150 for it… Mmmmm… not so sure about that!

On the value side of things you can go even yet another step and a half over the G9-Oly75 combo with a GX9 or E-M5/10 II and Sigma 56 1.4 - shallow pocketable portraits with great IBIS and very little compromise, it's unbelievable what we can do with so little bag space and monetary investment. And we don't even need to get started on adapting something like a Takumar 50 1.4 or 55 1.8 if you have the time and patience to focus manually. There's just so many options. 📸 👀

I love the focus hold buttons on some of my Sony lenses (85mm f/1.8 and 70-200mm f/4 G OSS) which I have programmed for Eye-AF on my A6500 and AF-On with my A6400. Since the A6400 has full time Eye-AF programming it for AF-On is easier for me than using rear button AF...

The difference in focal length from 90 to 135mm is noticeable, especially when photographing people. 135mm is great for compressing a subjects' features and has a slimming effect that works for many individuals, but not all. Ideally you'll want to have a lens that covers both lengths so you can mix it up depending on who you're photographing.

I was considering the Sony 135mm f1.8 with the A7 III until I realised the A6400 with the 85mm f1.8 gave a similar look, had significantly better AF than just about anything, and was far more portable. As a bonus, the combination cost less than the 135mm lens alone. For my preferred subject, shooting dancers outdoors, I can’t think of a better combination.

Excellent video and comparison, glad to learn you also like the M8, I LOVE mine... took it to a trip to Japan along with my then A7, and the Sony ended up 99% of the time inside the luggage. (is not only about image quality...) :)

3:43 Hmm. You had me checking my a7R III's Help Guide for Aperture Preview (and Shot. Result Preview), because I've never considered those options before since I'm pretty sure that I get a WYSIWIG view simply with Setting Effect ON. Assigning either of those two Preview options to a custom button only seems to be necessary with Setting Effect OFF, and even then a half press of the shutter button achieves the same preview result as the custom button feature. Of course, your mileage may vary ;)

Kim Cruz Good eye! We (almost) always list the gear we use below each video in the show notes, as much for me as our viewers. In this case, we shot with our new Sony a6400 and old E 50/1.8 OSS. Our little B1M mic test was shot on an a7R IV, and our Nikkor Z 85/1.8 preview vid was shot on a Nikon Z with the Nikkor S 50/1.8. Incredible gear these days!

You made some great points Hugh. I am not sure if these super fast, long focal length, lenses make much sense. I have an old 1970s Nikkor 135mm f2.8 and it literally gets one eyelash in focus at f/2.8. (Used on a D810). The shallow DOF is insane. Great for some crazy artistic statement, but not for normal portraiture. Having said that, for full body shots at a reasonable distance away, they start to make a little more sense. One can turn the background into creamy, potato soup. Even at full body shot distances. My Nikkor 135mm usually gets used at 5.6 and even at that, the background is pure indistinguishable cream. I also have an old Soviet Jupiter-11 135mm f/4, and I have never missed the lack of shallow DOF.
@3BMEP

Baruch Cohen Great points. I think the ideal distance from the subject is that for the motorcyclist - as you see, full body shots with beautifully separated background. Should have made that point myself! 🙏🏻

I really appreciate your conclusion to this video. People get wrapped up so much in what's "best," and lose sight that almost all modern cameras are fantastically capable systems. One thing I must disagree on, though is the dedicated aperture ring on the GM lenses. I was a bit surprised when I tried them, but I found them to be much faster than the a7iii's body dials in practice, and I love having a physical setting as opposed to having to look at the screen or EVF to check what my aperture is set to. This is especially handy (for me, at least) if you need to rip down from f/5.6-8 (my default for walking around) to f/1.4 to catch a wide open shot at a moment's notice.

Fascinating as always. I can recommend the Samyang/Rokinon 135mm f:2 as a modern, full manual design. Get the Cenon EF mount version and buy adapters to use with Sony, Fujifilm, Leica M & L, and Micro 4/3 mounts. I guess that should work for the Nikon mount version too. Also, find a copy of "Modern Color" by Fred Herzog to see what a genius can achieve using Leica M, 50mm and 135mm lenses and Kodachrome.

You can get an old 135mm Nikkor lens for around $400 instead. It will have less than half the number of elements meaning it's not overcorrected for resolution and chromatic aberrations and will have superior rendering, image fidelity and output. Wide angle lenses have vastly improved in the last 10-20 years, but mid-telephoto... has somewhat degraded. Since when do we need 12+ elements in a 135mm?For reproductive work it's a different story, I can definitely see the value in having an optimal resolution from the lens, at the cost of general rendering and color fidelity.

@Innovate-pq9ci
@Innovate-pq9ci 5 лет назад
Yes they usually do - resolution it depends. Marketing wants us to believe that only recent lenses can be "good enough" for our modern cameras but that's not true. But yes it's not the right answer for everyone.
@Innovate-pq9ci
@Innovate-pq9ci 5 лет назад
** that's marketing right there. In reality try 1:1 comparison between an older quality lens (that's important) and a recent one. In some cases older lenses resolve even better while still keeping all the positive aspects of a low element count lens.
