Given that the Sony 200-600mm was released in 2019, is it still a relevant lens choice today in 2024? In this video we’ll take a closer look at the Sony 200-600 and how it stacks up against some of its newer competitors, namely the 60-600 and 150-600 from Sigma. I’ll also share some of my experience with this lens and how I ultimately feel that the Sony is still a great choice.

The problem is the Sony is the only lens that can take advantage of the full speed of the A1 and A9III. Hopefully Sony addresses this in a future firmware update.

I owned the Olympus 300f4 pro and I have rented the 200-600. I needed and used it on the 600 end almost the entire time. What I found was my Olympus lens outperformed the sony in every way. I was about to order it after I got back from my trip because of the price. But after comparing my results with my 300 and even my 40-150 with the teleconverter. I plan on getting the 300 again. I also owned the 100-400gm for a couple weeks. Sent that lens back too. With the exception of the 70-200. Sony zooms seem average at best to me. So for me, it's not relevant. Due for a version II

I am not a fan of external telescoping zoom...So the Sony does it for me... Cheers

@@georgemahlum6542 Agreed! I definitely appreciate the internal zoom.

Great and informative video. Recently purchased the Sigma 150-600, and although i truly love this lens, i will say that 600 mm has its limits even with APSC mode and cropping. This is where i see the advantage of having the Sony 200-600mm comes in. Since Sony doesn't allow third-party manufacturers to make teleconverters for the E Mount system, the 200-600 mm holds the advantage for getting longer reach when paired with the 1.4 or 2.0 teleconverter I've heard that imGe quality drops with the 2.0 converter, but that only matters a ton for those who are obssed with sharpness too much. If i had to choose, I'd most likely go with the Sigma still since i appreciate being able to zoom by pulling the barrel forward, but sometimes the lack of reach does get mildy irritating. Heres to hoping Sony lets up on the third party teleconverter rule, but otherwise, i might pick the Sony up in the future alone with a TC and use it stricly like that.

@@JWS218 I’m glad you found the video informative. It’s a bit annoying that Sony placed some arbitrary limits on third party lenses, but at least they’ve been pretty good about opening up the E-mount to third party lens makers. I’m tempted to get the 1.4x teleconverter. Like you I often want a little more reach for smaller birds. What do you primarily shoot?

Thanks for the video, I’ve been putting off buying a long range zoom. The 60-600 is way too heavy, and I have plenty of lenses that cover up to 200mm. The 150-600 is very intriguing but I strongly dislike the extending zoom, especially in long lenses like this. That leaves the Sony, but I don’t want to invest in the 200-600 G if they may replace it or drop a GM version in the next few years.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. However, I feel like Sony has older lenses that they would probably update before this one, especially given that with a firmware update they gave this one the capacity to support 120fps shutter speeds on the A9miii. Also, given that you can find this one used or discounted new for reasonable prices I pulled the trigger. Renting it also started to add up in my case! 😂

After this video I would choose the sony, just because the weather sealing and balance is important for me

Thanks! Exactly my thoughts. I definitely think the internal zoom gives the Sony an edge on both balance and weather sealing. I forgot to clarify that the Sigmas are weather sealed, but the extending zoom, I believe, still makes them more susceptible to dust over time, at least if frequently used in harsh conditions.

Sony 200-600 is rated 2 stop for IS?
@jacobjordan3470
@jacobjordan3470 3 месяца назад
My understanding is that Sony hasn’t officially released an OSS performance spec, whereas Sigma has released one 4 stops for the 150-600mm and 6-7 stops for the 60-600mm. I can’t remember where I saw a review that rated the 200-600 at 2 stops, but I remember reading it somewhere and I came across another one that said the Sigma had approximately twice the keeper rate when using really slow shutter speeds.

I sold my Sony 200-600mm 5.6-6.3 G Lens in 2023, it is too big, too heavy and not very good to handle handheld for a longer time, it also have stabilizer issues with the Sony R-series Cameras. In March 2024 I bought the excellent Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN Sports Lens which is very compact and light weight, it is very easy to use and handle, the optical image quality are excellent and I can go hiking in the nature for several hours, carrying it in my hands, so I can highly recommend the Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports Lens. For birds and wildlife photography it is very good, I have fx the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM Lens on my Sony A7RIVA and the Sigma 500mm on my Sony A7RV, a great combo !

@@cameraprepper7938 The Sigma 500mm is an intriguing lens, definitely a bit pricier though. You also have more limited zoom range. However, from what I hear it is quite sharp, so you likely could make up the 100mm by cropping in post. I also like that at 500mm you are at 5.6 vs 6.3 on the Sony. Gotta love the size and weight of it! Thanks for sharing.
