Hi Toms. Your video is pretty clear and straight forward, but I am having problems to apply the Lock-on AF facility. Could you please dedicate a video for that? Or just send some instructions how to proceed. What is the advantage/difference from that normal continuous AF?
This is such a brilliant series. Thanks so much for this Toms. Ive had an a6000 for over 10 years and never understood it as much as I do now. Enthused to go out and take more photos
Just got an A6000 and I’m so used to manual focusing with samyang lens that I was completely thrown by the lens that only do autofocus. This video really helped me out. Thank you for making it :)
Very useful video, Tom. Thanks a lot! Just bought A6000 and I’m using your videos to settle settings. Thanks for the videos! It would be great to have a new video about advanced focus settings, you mentioned. Thanks again and good luck!
Privet Andrei i sposiba! You can check some of my latest POV videos, there I usually say why I choose specific settings regarding focus as I go along. And thanks a lot for your support mate 🙌
Good stuff, thanks. Was shooting a surfer yesterday with tele lens and was annoyed by being out of focus every time I brought the camera up and having to half press the shutter to focus it again. Going to try the back button method for this and see how it goes. Hopefully it will lock it beween sets. If not I will just go manual next.
Just inherited an a6000 and trying to use it for hockey. Will try these tips along with faster shutter speed and see if I can get better photos. Thank you!
@@TomsJurjaksuntil I can afford a better one, the Sony E 55-210 F4.5-6.3. I’ve managed to get a few good shots, but I am finding the camera has been focusing too slowly, or focusing on the wrong player when they in a battle along the boards. I’m working on finding the correct settings, without having to increase the ISO too much since the image becomes so grainy. If you have suggestions on lenses etc, I’d love them!
@@conteh4447 you are in a very tough environment - indoors and with fast moving subjects which means you need a fast shutter speed and increased ISO. Good thing the ice is so bright :) Ideally you would get a full frame camera. Even like A7C could be a good enough I believe, but that also requires full frame lenses which tend to be more expensive. If you stick with A6000 - limit the focus area to zone so you help the camera know where to focus on. And perhaps ask someone to lend you a prime lens. Its not ideal for sports because you cant zoom but perhaps if you are close to action, it could work. A Sigma 56mm f1.4 perhaps could be a nice addition. The fast aperture would allow you to keep the ISO down.
Appreciate your instructional video. I will watch several times with camera in hand so that can get more comfortable. Too often many instructional videos cover too wide a range and is too much to absorb at one time. Thank you.
#BBF Back Button Focus = Best Buds Forever! Love my BBF for action photos, like shooting high speed motorsports or even other fast moving item. #FirmHandshakes - great video series, been going through all these A6000 ones.
And thank you for leaving such a nice comment Ben. Doing my bes to create more helpful videos. Once I finish my new studio, it should be lots more good content. Cheers 🙌
my comment probably wont be seen on such an old video, but I bought a a6000 off facebook marketplace a few days ago as my first camera other then a ae-1 i had but had trouble learning with due to film prices. I did not even realize until now that there is a specific button that should be pressed to make it focus, i thought it did it automatically. I got some half decent photos of ducks the other day but 95% of my photos were garbage and I realize now this is why. I guess thats just the way it goes when you are winging it haha thank you very much
Hey buddy, I am a creator who tries my best to get back at all comments, even at older videos, but you are actually kinda right, by default the autofocus should be activated when the shutter button is half pressed. Thats one way of doing it, in this video I showed a back button focus, gives you a bit more control. Hope now your AF game is strong 💪
I really like the way you explain everything while maintaining same information doesn't iterate... Its really pleasing to watch all your videos... Personally I like that one you made with the title Street Photography... Please make another version of it... If its possible kindly go into the details regarding angle and rule of third moreover POV videos are way too much impressive kindly maintain that too... Another thing is give us some tips whilee shooting RAW images of street photography.. Also go through the settings depending on the condition.. Finally Let us know an approximate date when we will get that video...
You can achieve the same results using centre focus and recompose in single shot for most of the issues you have identified. The only benefit to back button autofocus is where you are generally focusing on fast moving objects. Even then there are other ways such as lock on subject tracking. I think a lot of it comes down to your personal style and methods.
I agree that there are several approaches and preferences. For me the biggest benefit is that the camera will not refocus when I half press the shutter button down. This means, I can take 2 pictures 1 minute apart without refocusing while without back button focus, you would have to hold down the shutter button halfway down for 1 full minute, otherwise camera would refocus and you would have to repeat the composition again.
@@TomsJurjaks I have been explore mostly your video. as beginner your video about Sony a6000 is more useful between another sony type. coz this camera is very great for beginners. I hope you still make video about video Sony a6000. I believe you get more view from it. 🤩
@@byoneentertiment9375 Im happy to know you find it useful. And don't worry, I have a lot of ideas to make the videos about Sony a6000 and other gear (other cameras, lights, microphones etc) so there is a lot of content coming soon :)
Hi, great video. This realy helped me out. However I have trouble focussing with these settings when there is little light. How to focus in these situations?
@toms jurjaks, thanks a lot really, I was thinking that I would be without the option of select my focus point, really appreciate, really man, your video was a life savior. Wish you all the best and many happiness and success in your life
@@TomsJurjaks absolutely! I shoot both Canon and Sony, but haven't used my Sony as much, simply because I haven't entirely figured it out, but I plan to use it a lot more!
Just came across your channel as I'm waiting for 2 a6000 to arrive. I will be using them for streaming a chat show here in Ibiza. Mostly using them for video and your tutorials are very clear so thanks for those. Just subbed too so hopefully your channel will help me when my cameras arrive. If you have any advice or videos on best camera settings when using obs with a6000 and also best obs settings when recording with multiple a6000? Thank you :)
Very useful guide on autofocus for beginners like me.Can u please recommend single lens for group and portrait clicks to avoid carrying multiple lens? Kit lens which comes with alpha 6000 is good but not best..
Thanks buddy! There is no one lens that does it all. For portrait photos, you will need a nice prime lens like Sigma 30mm f1.4 of Sigma 56mm f1.4 but for other stuff a zoom lens is nice to have. Maybe Tamron 17-70 f2.8 or Sigma 18-50mm f2.8
@@TomsJurjaks That's some quality editing. There are plenty of focus settings videos but I enjoyed how this has been "built": the relaxing style, the minimalistic graphics/transitions, also when you post your photos in order to explain in what scenario you should choose that specific settings. Glad you like the support, but keep in mind you earned it with your effort.
@@lelo8744 those are truly uplifting words my friend and to be honest, its always pleasant to know what people enjoy in my videos as its very hard to evaluate myself :) Thanks a lot!
I've just obtained a Canon 55-250 STM lens and adaptor for my a6000. I can't get the auto-focus to work It hunts up and down, but remains out of focus. I have it set on single-shot Auto, as that is the only option available. Thanks.
Love your work, just bought a a6000 and slowly wrapping my head around it. Your videos help a lot. Would it be possible for a follow up touching on some of this things you mentioned at the end? MF, peaking levels etc? Many thanks
Hey Ryan, happy to know that! Not sure if I will manage to make the video about it, but I highly suggest you to simply play around it yourself. Everyone has their own preferences. Im personally not a big fan of MF so the only thing I use are Zebras. Drop a comment if you wanna know something particular and I will try to give you an answer. Cheers!
@@TomsJurjaks You are absolutely right I will just get stuck in. Early days with it so far, lots to learn. Seriously though, vids are great and thanks for the reply, means a lot
Hi Toms, very well explained video on focus for users like me who use a6000. I've had it for 5-6 years. Just a quick question, is there any quick tip to not miss focus on eyes of your portrait subject? For me, its always hit and miss. Sometimes its sharp and a lot of other times, its not focusing. I understand it depends on lots of factors like light, shutter speed, depth, etc. Just wanted to see if there's any pro tip from you. Thanks in advance.
Hey Prasanna, thanks a lot! Well there are 3 things: 1) Newer camera will definitely have improved AF performance; 2) Good, high quality lens will also help a lot; 3) but besides those 2 things which require you to spend cash, try selecting zone AF mode and limiting the space where camer has to search for the focus.
Hey buddy, thanks! I use Deity D3 Pro for indoor use and Movo VXR-10 for outdoor use but A6000 doesnt have a mic port so you cant plug it in directly. I use an external recorder for those purposes then.
Hi @TomsJurjaks, very good tutorial. One question: I can't use the AEL back button (as you suggested), after connecting to my smartphone using the Imaging Edge app. Any idea how I can solve this?
Ahh nothing but problems with the Imaging Edge app my friend. If possible, try not to use it. I can't even give you a suggestion because that app is just so bad....
@Vlirdens I mean you can still use the app for remote shooting, I guess thats your only choice but then some features will not be available I guess 🤷♂️
I have issue that when change shuttet and ISO it doenst show how itnlooks in monitor same as color then when i took its to bright or to dark.... is it bug?
Im sorry for my english but i wanna ask something,, i used your tutorial and used AEL button to activate the auto focus,, when i press the AEL button the auto focus work but when i release it the auto focus turn off, is it supposed to be like that?? Because if i record my self and i make a movement i had to press the AEL button isn't i??
Your English is great, no worries. Yes, thats the exact point of "back-button focus". Camera focus only when you hold down the AEL button. But this applies only to photo mode. For videos, there should be Auto Focus without any buttons pressing.
Hey, so I set my a6000 to wide and AF-C but for some reason, the focus points are still only limited to the center. There's also this box in the middle of my screen that basically puts the focus points in a cage or something whereas your focus points (at 6:13, for example) are all spread out. What am I doing wrong here?
Ive got a6000 in that, If i turn on AF -C but still i am not getting those small focus points, what might went wrong. I'm struggling to sort it out but, can't. Pls help me.
I've never had such problem. It always stays off for me. Have you tried doing a factory reset on your camera? It shouldn't be like that unless you use one of the "recall memory" settings.
what are the disadvantages of back button focus? Let's say I'm doing street photography and there is biker or a car which will fly by me in a second, am I gonna hit it (panning) with back button?
As long as you are holding down the back button focus and have the AF set to Continuous AF then yes, you will hit it. The only downside is that you need to use two fingers - one for focusing, the other for shutter, but for me that is perfect because I am in full control and there are no other downsides of having back button focus.
I have a question about focus, on my a6300. A couple weeks ago I was trying to take a self portrait in the mountains but the focus was always out and ended up using the manual focus; having to figure out by trial and error where to focus. So, I set the timer to ten seconds, hit the button, get in to place and shoot; out of focus every time. I realized that it was keeping the same focus as when I first pressed the button. So, when I got in to the shot, the focus was still for far away. How do I set up the camera where it changes focus when the object in view changes? Thanks.
Hey Ray, thanks for your comment. Have you tried setting your camera to AF-C (which is continuous auto focus) and in settings ENABLE Pre-AF. I usually disable Pre-AF as it most of the times just unnecessary focuses, but in photos, especially with the timer, the camera takes the focus when you half press the shutter and usually then you are closer to camera. So having Pre-Af enabled possibly could solve your problem. Alternative solution is to use a remote or Imagine Edge app on your phone. In that way, you could get in the place and when you would hit the shutter button (on remote or in app) the camera would focus and start the timer. Also it would be easier for you to see where you need to stand. I really hope this helps. Its a bit of trial and error with self portraits I guess. Let me know how it goes Ray ✌️
@@TomsJurjaks under the drive mode (Timer) the camera won't let me do AF-C; that's the setting I usually use. I did download the app and will use that but seems like there should be a setting for self portrait. As anything, seems like the simplest things are left out of consumer electronics; not the first time. Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it.
You are right @@raycowan1387 I totally forgot you can't use AF-C. Nevertheless, try the app as well as Pre-AF. Maybe you manage. And yeah the struggle is real. We need other photographer friends to take pictures of us 😃
For photos you can go with either one. You won't notice the difference. I would personally prefer Sony since it has better AF, its much smaller and has a screen that you can put in different angles. Also there is more selection of lenses for Sony.
Hey Nick, if you don't mind be limited by Fuji's lens selection then go with Fuji as it is bit better than a6000. Alternatively, you can go with Sony a6100 and have access to all of the lenses from Sony, Tamron, Sigma etc.
