Thanks for making this. Can you tell us if you can select line level or microphone input for the external sound source? Thank you.

The problem I'm getting is when I'm not talking it seems like the mic turns itself up, and when I start talking, it eventually levels out, but then in editing every clip starts too loud and comes down. Is there a setting I can change so that stops happeneing?

did you ever try using 2 wireless lapel in camera using audio splitter? does a6300 have stereo? channel 1 and 2
@VideoUpskill

Hi Ronel, yes the Sony a6300 does have stereo. I use this mixer amzn.to/2AYPfFG on my professional shoots connecting 2 wireless lapel mics recording to channel left and channel right and separate in the edit to control individually. Here is a video I made about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AVwul2wq7Ug.html With this mixer I run 2 two Sony wireless lapel mics at the same time or a wireless lapel mic and a rode video mic pro. The smartlav+ only works direct into camera but all other mics work great this mini 2 channel mixer.

My Sony a6500 Camera is not recording audio via any external Mic 1. I have googled & Checked all possible videos suggesting Audio level adjustment etc but none shows me any option where I can exclusively choose to record via external mic 2. The mics that I tried are: Fifine wireless, BOYA wired one and many other local ones too even - All these mics are working fine with my other cameras & phones and recording perfectly 3. When i record audio via camera then the display bars flicker indicating successful audio recording, but the moment I plug in the external Mic the display bars are at zero for R and L channels. - they do not flicker at all 4. Mine is a new camera bought in Feb 2019 5. Please advise me as it is impacting my work a lot - I am a youtube Vlogger and there is lot of background noise in India so recording via the external mic is a necessity for me

@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 4 года назад
Thank you for sharing your recording issue. I get the same result with my Rode smartlav+ mic and get zero sound in my A6300 unless I use the converter cable amzn.to/2XVHAFA Some microphones are only made to work with mobile phones, for example the Rode Smartlav+ in my video does the same thing if I don't use the cable that modifies the cable from mobile phone plug (called TRS) to typical 3.5mm microphone cable audio. As you can get the audio to work successfully on your other cameras it sounds like the microphone is working correctly. When you plug a cable into the audio jack on the A6500 it will automatically use the external mic source. Maybe either try the adaptor cable or a brand like rode, sony, senheisser or a brand that you see someone using with their Sony mirrorless camera. That's what I can think of, hopefully that helps.

This is very interesting. I have one question and one request. I wanted to confirm whether I can connect this mic to my digital audio recorder and record the audio? Could you show how to record audio interviews in outdoor settings, like how to fix the mic to the subject and then the recording (only audio) that would be very helpful.
@VideoUpskill

@VideoUpskill

The Sony A6300 can only record up to 2 separate microphones with a stereo 3.5mm mic jack. For your situation I would use an external audio recorder like a Zoom H6 because it has 4 XLR audio inputs and much better recording quality capabilities. amzn.to/2FxU6Ff

Thank you for the video. Does the wireless recorders work with sony a 6000? The camera doesn't have headphone jack. Will you let me know what is out there that is inexpensive to use for my camera to have external mic & headphone connections? Thank you.
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 6 лет назад
Thanks, the a6000 is a tricky one, if you are happy to pay a little extra to upgrade to perhaps a second hand a6300 that will mean you will save a lot of work and your time every time. With the a6000 and audio recording you need to be using an extra recording device and synchronising the audios in the edit. I would try and upgrade to the a6300 to open up your options. If you have to stay with the a6000 here are a few options I have researched for you: Sony seem to have their own bluetooth lapel mic that should work but as I have never used it I have no idea about the quality when used with the a6000. - Sony ECMW1M Wireless Microphone amzn.to/2QB2OmL Method 1 Cheapest (without headphone monitoring) - Buy a rode smartlav+ lapel mic and use your phone as an external recorder. Method 2 Use an external recorder with headphone monitoring and a Rode Smartlav+ Eg Zoom H1 amzn.to/2OtNYgu Tascam DR60d mk2 (more than you need I think) amzn.to/2xggWK6 If you have the budget for wireless lapel mics they are much more convenient. Hope that helped and all the best for your video productions.

If you are only recording audio for an extended time then the file size will be a lot smaller using the smartlav+ plugged into the smartphone but be sure to so some tests to make sure everything record the way you want it to sound. I always monitor the sound when I can recording using my wirless lapel into my camera or external recorder like a Zoom H5 that way I can hear if any problems in the audio may happen.

why would you use the crappy pre amps on the camera? Im guessing they are not that good and the noise floor will be horrible! Do you know if the Tascam 4 channel interface can hook up to the a6300? i would highly recommend a stronger pre amp.
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 6 лет назад
Thanks for your comment, yes it's true using an external recorder or my colleague uses the DR-60D amzn.to/2jizhip these devices with a line out that can be plugged into the camera will give you a much better signal to noise ratio and a lot more audio quality flexibility, it's true. For my jobs and this video I use the Sony UWP-D lapel mics with a +12db setting feeding into my sony cameras and I am able to set the camera audio level to between 5 and 10 for most interview settings. So for my professional work this system gives me the right balance of being compact, convenient and still comes out good quality because I know how the gear works for the types of shoots I use it on.

Quick question maybe you know the answer to: I am finding that the HDMI output does not carry audio unless the a6300 is actually recording. While in stand-by, I get no audio on the HDMI out. For example, I'm using an Atomos Ninja V monitor/recorder and for it to pick up the audio, I have also press the record button on the camera. Do you know anything about that or how to overcome this issue (in other words, how to pass audio through the HDMI out without activating record on the A6300)?

It's a limitation of the A6300 I believe.

Hey hi, if you could please help me in setting up the Sennheiser G3/G4 for Sony A7III Camera, as in like the settings for the Mic and also inside the camera, for Interviews indoors and outdoors. Thanks.
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 4 года назад
I don't own my Sennheiser G3 kit anymore but generally speaking set the camera audio recording level to between 5 -10. There will be a setting on the Sennheiser lapel device that you can change the attenuation or something like that, try listening to the audio as you change that setting. That allows the lapel microphone to be more sensitive, which allows your camera to receive louder audio and it helps to clean the audio signal. Be careful not to reduce the attenuation too far as it will distort but you will find the sweet spot.

Hi, so far I have only little experience with the 6300 as a video camera. After an interview I did with the Smart lav+, I have the unpleasant feeling that the internal microphone of the 6300 doesn't switch off, even if an external microphone is plugged in. Maybe that's because I didn't work in movie mode, but in preset mode 1. Could that be? And why doesn't the internal microphone switch off when using the micro input? Thanks for your advise and help.
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 5 лет назад
Hi there, that's interesting I have not heard of that problem, I am wondering if you are using the adaptor? Adapter needed to plug Smartlav+ mic into camera amzn.to/2zahFun I recommend setting the camera to Movie mode so you can always see the audio levels. The other tips would be to tap the Smartlav lapel mic when it is plugged in and see if you see big audio level jumps on the camera levels that way you know the camera is listening to the lapel mic. Because we can't easily monitor the sound on this camera I always do a quick test before recording the real interview, so I record a short 10 second clip and speak into the lapel and if the audio is clearly heard when I play it back on the camera then I know all is good.
@derharst5298
@derharst5298 5 лет назад
Yes, I’m using the adaptor. meanwhile I did some testing. I plugged in the adaptor alone - without the Smart Lav+, and the internal microphone was shut off - as it should be. A little bit more research on this topic showed that in a silent surrounding the internal limiter opens up the level extremely so that you hear every little bit of ambience, and only after the first words are spoken the limiter reduces the level. Point is that you can influence the level only in movie mode, and just because of that it indeed makes more sense to work in movie mode. Maybe that helps some other people.

How about the mic of the interviewer? If I interview someone and only him/her is miched-up how can my own voice be heard? Any ideas? I was thinking on buying a splitter and plug two lavs?
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 4 года назад
Yes for this situation, you would need 2 lavs to get the best result for a 2 person interview. I use this device but it only works with my 2 Sony UWP-D wireless kits ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AVwul2wq7Ug.html It doesn't seem to work with the Rode on that unit. Yes a splitter is good but you also want to be able to control both lav mic volumes independently to get a clean recording. There are a number of audio box units that can help record directly into camera with 2 inputs. Another option on the budget side would be that you could record on your phone and synchronise them in post.

Blue Box Videography In this video just to show simplicity it's just Samsung's bult in audio recording but that auto levels which is good and bad. I noticed that when there is silence (in between dialogue), the a6400 increases its recording sensitivity automatically. Is there a way to turn this off? When the sensitivity increases, background audio noise is introduced. As the dialogue resumes, the sensitivity adjusts, but there is a lag, so that the audio noise overlaps with the first few seconds of the vocals. It's annoying.
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 4 года назад
What is your audio recording level set to? If it is too high then the camera will use it's inbuilt audio limiter to protect the audio from distorting a bit but as a result the hiss will be super loud. Or maybe it's the mic you are using? Try setting the A6400 recording level to around 5 or 10 and see if you still have the problem?

Whould the sound quality be better if I record it separately from the iPhone?
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 4 года назад
Yes I believe that could be true to some extent because you can record in 24bit audio with the right app on the iPhone, the challenge is if the audio signal coming to the iPhone doesn't need to be boosted too much which would introduce noise like the Sony camera. For the best quality audio recording I use an external audio recorder like the popular Zoom H4n for example. amzn.to/2ZjnANz I can record in 24bit audio resolution and the quality of the preamps (signal boosters) are excellent and I can increase the signal quite a lot and still sound clean. So will it be much better, it's hard to say. As I haven't heard the audio preamps in the iphone vs the Sony but here is how to enable 24bit audio recording on an iphone ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qTOvhMrJkfI.html

Maybe your audio recording level on your camera is set higher than level 10. You will start to notice hiss after that. You can try having the microphone closer to the subject and set the camera audio level closer to 10. For single person talking videos I recommend buying a lapel mic for very clear audio. The audio meter is marked -20DB for a reason. Your mixer should send a tone at 0DB and your mixer and your limiter should be set to +18DB you then send a 'tone' from the mixer to the camera and set it to minus 20DB based on that tone. Then you will have strong professional audio with plenty headroom for when someone or something makes a loud unexpected noise.

I seem to be having a problem. I have a beachtek DXA-Micro Pro audio adapter hooked up to my A6300 in conjunction with a Rode wireless link lav mic set. The adapter appears to be working in that I can monitor the audio and adjust various audio settings. When recording the lav mic sounds great, good clean audio coming through my headphones. My problem is that when I playback the clip directly on the A6300, the sound comes out of the camera's internal microphone and NOT my headphones. I would like to playback the clip and hear it just as it was recorded live. I shoot interviews and can not risk thinking the audio sounds good but when I go home I hear noise I missed when recording live? Hope that makes sense :) Any solution?
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 6 лет назад
Dominic Serva Absolutely, I totally understand! :) It's unfortunately that we don't have a headphone jack on the A6300 (reason why I still use A7s on most interviews.) The only way for example that I can trust that the audio is coming into the A6300 all good is by using the small HD focus headphone jack because it is getting a feed "out" of the camera and into the small HD monitor. So in order: Lav mic 》 Camera 》 HDMI cable from camera connected to Small HD Focus 》 headphones connected to Small HD focus. There is a small HDMI audio delay when you are monitoring live but at least you have piece of mind to hear what the camera hears. As with any situation we want to be hearing what the camera is hearing unless we are recording to an external device in which case we would monitor that.
@theorangecrush
@theorangecrush 6 лет назад
Thank you for the quick reply. I admit to being a bit confused by your solution. Can you provide links for me? Someone else suggested this item www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-Separate-Microphone-Smartphone/dp/B075YNRC9V/ref=sr_1_sc_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1525476042&sr=8-9-spell&keywords=headphone+mic+y+spliter+smartphone It appears to plug into the A6300 mic jack and then split into a headphone jack and an additional mic jack.
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 6 лет назад
With that splitter I am not sure if you can monitor the audio coming in from the mic and I don't think audio will be sent out from the recording input on the camera. I could be wrong as I haven't tried it. If I am filming interviews professionally with my A6300, the only reliable way I can trust is if I use my SmallHD monitor plugged into the cameras HDMI port, the SmallHD has a headphone jack to listen to what the camera is really hearing amzn.to/2kUV4wV
@theorangecrush
@theorangecrush 6 лет назад
Thanks for the link. What about this monitor? It has a headphone jack and is a bit less expensive than your option. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1398766-REG/elvid_7_4k_on_camera_monitor.html I can get any monitor that has a headphone jack right?
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 6 лет назад
Looks like it says it has a 3.5mm stereo headphone output so I should say you should be safe. I haven't used that model but the safest method is to get the audio feed out of the camera via HDMI and monitor the audio of that signal. That way you are listening to what the camera is hearing.
