Thank you for your amazing review Jason. The crop at 4k 60p sucks me a lot becase the job Im doing I need a wide lens. I was wondering if you can do a review of the Sony a7IV at 4k60 using the sony apsc lens 10-18mm f4. can it work? can you test the sharpeness and the quality of image ? I'm looking for a solution with this 1.5x croping. Thank you!! Peace :)
100 years from now, Sony will be making gigapixel bodies that can shoot at a million frames per second, and track a mosquitoes eyelash, but it'll still come with a recycled Gameboy Color lcd...
@@DiegoTerzano it's super bizarre, we're all used to looking at high res cell phone displays, on even economy phones, for them to spec such a crap display on a class leading full frame body, makes no sense.
4K 60fps is cropped because a technical limitation not because Sony didn't want to give it to us. With the 33megapixel sensor the readout is slow so it creates rolling shutter, and everyone is pointing that on this camera rolling shutter is worst than on the A7III. As it is the A7IV already have a compromise on the 4K 30fps, do you really think they could do 4K60fps on this camera with the full sensor read? With a new processor that might happen.... I think this camera is very good option! Everything I see makes sense to me, even the 4K60p in crop mode makes sense to me. Thanks for the video!
Exactly. If a faster sensor read is needed, you need one of the more expensive models. This one already has the same processor as A1, it's just that the sensor does as much as it can at that price point. That's the trade-off for more pixels and therefore more data.
Yea I’m not really convinced with this A7iv….all of these camera influencers are trying to convince me but it’s not really much of an upgrade to my A7iii…idk. The megapixel increase is great…I guess? I guess I’m just uneducated. I’m not convinced.
@@noahjoseph5714 the biggest upgrade for the A74 in my opinion are of course the megapixels, but it is the flip out screen which is a huge. Other than that, the a7iii is more than adequate to get the job done for weddings, engagement shoots and social events. The lens is more important than the body, especially for resell value which stays consistent as time passes by. I mean if you can afford the A74, by all means, go for the best. But for the majority of us, it's not a necessity, a good lens and a constant willingness to go out and practice shooting and understanding the variables of photo editing are key to becoming a proper photographer. Don't use the hype of a new camera body to justify you being a good photographer. A good driver isn't a good driver solely because the car is expensive but because you develop the necessary skills to become better as you practice and learn from your mistakes.
15:34 it's because you don't zoom the images to the same level ... I can't believe how many pros make that mistake. You can see the A7iii is zoomed back compared to the A7iv here, therefore it benefits from more surface and less visible noise, whereas the A7iv is handicapped because you zoom more in the image. Make the images look exactly the same size and THEN compare the noise.
I'm a Canon guy but happy to see Sony keeping the photography market competitive. Had the original Sony A7 and hated it but these new cameras look amazing!
The flip out screen is so awesome for vertical shooting. I still shoot a lot with a6000 but i would never buy another hybrid without the flippy. Just ordered two of these A7iv for the team.
Super excited for this!!! Been anxiously waiting for the new A7IV & love the new features!!! This is going to be a must buy for me, and will replace my A7RIII as my main A-camera for all my video content.
And here I am thinking about selling my A7r2 to buy an A7r3 because I just love the R series “R”esolution ~ I am used to 42mp for the last 5 years and dropping 9mp just hurts my heart.
Jason does the best job at explaining this. I use my a7iii for video and love it. Three things might make me jump to a7iv: flip out screen, higher resolution LCD screen (the screen in a7iii is surprisingly poor resolution), and the dust protection mechanism (even when I store my camera in a closet, dust keeps entering the a7iii sensor). And I would add the improved menu navigation and buttons are huge too.
I recently shot an image film for a small company with a borrowed Canon 5d mark 4, which I had never used for video before, and I remember how confused I was when in 4k mode the picture was suddenly zoomed in. I never found out why it happened and well, when you complained about the 4k60fps crop here, I suddenly realized, that that must have been what has happened on this shoot. Happy to finally know xD
Great video Jason thanks, my biggest disappointment about this camera (given the sizable price increase) was that Sony didn't manage to squeeze in a stacked sensor to once again cement them as the mirrorless leaders, offering cutting edge features at a great price like so many A series models have done before it. Sony could have still kept the A7iv artificially capped at 10fps to protect the A9 and A1 sales but I think to have quite a sizable rolling shutter and probably a nasty banding issue too when shooting in silent shutter mode is unacceptable at $2500 in what is essentially 2022. I would love to see some silent shutter banding tests, maybe a comparison shootout against the A9i which is actually the same price as the A7iv and so makes for a very interesting proposition!
Great video Jason. I’ve watched a bunch since yesterday and yours is at the top 👌🏻 I saw that the 10fps are only in Compressed Raw on a CFexpress card. Lossless and Uncompressed top at 6 fps. That’s really sad! It would be cool to make some comparaison between the different modes!
Was excited when I saw this review on my homepage. Great video as always!! As an a6400 user I really eventually want to get into a full frame camera. This one really feels like the logical choice (although a little bummed about the 4K 60 crop). I do think I’ll need to wait a bit to save a justify spending this much on a camera but I don’t think there is a better option for my use in the Sony lineup.
I came from the A6400 as well. I was waiting for an improved APS-C camera, then the A74 came out. I thought the 4K 60 was great because i have some good crop glass I can use for video. The Sigma Trio and the Tamron 11-20mm. Ill be using the tamron for slow mo real estate videos at 4K 60. So the greatthing is you can use your current lenses for 4K 60 stabilized, much better quality video.
yes if you are more than 65% video get the S line. this is a basic all around camera but nit video centric. use the right tool for the right job. S for video/low light. R for hi-res pro fashion and landscapes. a9/a1 for pro sports / wildlife. A7iii or a7iv for everything else thats basic (street, portraits, walk around, travel, every day, wedding, etc etc)
this is not geared towards video centric. its a HYBRID all arouner. if you are primary for video you will already be getting/using a Sony A7Siii or FX3 FX6 instead. Use the right tool for the right job. Dont complain to Sony and others when you are trying to do something VERY specific and want the best results with a general use case camera !!! Like trying to use a butter knife to cut sushi perfectly. Yes they are both knives but its not the same.
@M Tech you can’t compare that, a phone‘s camera sensor is a fraction of the size of a fullframe camera. the amount of data that needs to be processed on a fullframe camera, let alone when it needs to downscale, is much, much higher. and therefore it produces a lot more heat, which also is a big limitation when it comes to recording times in a rather small body. the canon R5 has such short record limits for a reason.
@M Tech also, i think it’s pretty on par with the R6. same price point and specs are very comparable. agree, the R6 does 4K/60 without a crop but also has way less megapixels to deal with, which makes it less capable as a hybrid camera. also, the sony records for much longer. tests show it runs for 2 hours and longer at room temperature, while the R6 shuts down after 20-25 minutes and often you have to wait hours for it to be useable again. all in all, i can't see why it would be a huge disappointment. agreed, 4K/60 without a crop would have been really great, but to me, when filming slow-motion, i tend to use higher focal lengths anyway so i‘d be OK with that personally. and looking at their lineup, they have to make some sacrifices. if it would do 4K/60 without a crop, the only thing that would set the a7s III apart is 4K/120. most people don’t need that so sony would lose out on a lot of sales for that camera, since it’s way more expensive than the a7 IV.
@@sjsphotog Cropped 4K60 has been around for for a while now. Panasonic (S1) and Canon (R6) both have full frame 4K60 cameras on the market for $2.5k. Sony not putting full frame 4K60 in this camera is an undeniable letdown and we'll see what kind of repercussions it has.
@M Tech couldn’t agree more. Panasonic (S1) and Canon (R6) have full frame 4K60 cameras at $2.5k so idk what Sony is doing by pushing people into the A7siii or higher for something that their competitors have at the lower price point. I’m super disappointed
Great review. I see the camera as a very small incremental upgrade to the A7III. I think I will skip this one and go for the A7RV when released, hopefully sometime in 2022. I do mainly product, macro, astro and landscape. The AF improvements won't affect me much ( i use manual focus a lot). I also see a more greenish tint on the A7IV I am not too please about. I will keep expanding my lens lineup in the meantime.
Awesome content man I like how you lay it all out. Been working with a Sony camera for a little over a year and so far yours and Cody Blues channel helped me to understand it all better. I appreciate it!
I don’t buy a7 series for video. It’s a photography camera first to me, I do video but only about 15% of the time. I’m happy with what they’ve done and already pre ordered mine thru Adorama
Great review Jason! The 4k 60 crop is a deal breaker. My wish list included an adjustable MP for post workflow and some sort of improved app integration which unfortunately did not make it. With the A7SIII out for more than a year now, the used market has it for $2900-3200 versus a new A7IV for 2499 + tax ($2719 for NY), it might be more beneficial to add a bit more to get the premium benefits of the A7SIII, especially for the video shooter.
I feel like all these RU-vidrs are scared to talk bad about this camera because then they won’t get to review the next ones. 4k/60 crop is UNACCEPTABLE in 2021. No one is complaining enough for Sony to be forced to uncripple this camera. There’s no way 4k/60 isn’t possible with this camera. Their excuse is bullshit. I want more MP than my a7siii but need 4k/60. So disappointed in this camera. Give me a fucking limited 4k/60. God damn.
Sony and Canon both suffer from restricting their cameras to validate their cinema lineup. Sadly it takes Nikon as a way smaller company way to long to come out with decent competition for a camera like this. Z9 is awesome, but we need a smaller camera like the a7iv from Nikon. That camera will not be restricted because Nikon doesn't have a cinema lineup.
Great review. This was very helpful. This is why I come here first for my Sony camera reviews. You went though the very things I was interested in upgrading from the a73
Idk why people are complaining about this camera, I think it was still sell like hot cakes. It is not the a7siii it is a pretty big upgrade from the a7iii. When the a7iii dropped people thought it was the best camera ever, now they dripped the A7iv with better spects and folks still complaining. haha I have the a7siii and the a6400 I shoot both photos and videos so having this camera as a B cam to my a7siii works for me and when shooting weddings or event having the a6400 as a B cam to the a7iv works as well so it is a great middle ground camera that's why I've put in my order sadly we all have to wait until late December to get it.
Great video. I just bought this camera on Friday. I am a stills shooter and occasional video shooter for fun. This is the perfect camera for me coming from APS-C.
Wonderful content once again Jason!..for me I am waiting for the Sony A7R5..lol currently have a A7R3..skipped the A7R4 because for me it wasn't that big of a difference as far as specs etc..except the obvious 61 megapixel..lol to upgrade at that time..but for me. I will certainly consider this because it has the things I like especially the newer processor and new megapixel to the 33..and also has the upgraded touch screen and menu and the memory card option of CF express and of course the always awesome more tweaked auto focus system we all know and love..lol and also I was waiting on that shutter curtain cover..finally!..even though it takes a few seconds to deploy lol like Jared Polin mentioned..lol and the form factor has an upgrade which is also nice..and the video aspect is nice as well.. and if the price is around $2500 USD..these will sell like hot cakes like the 73 back in 2017..that came outa of no where and sold like crazy and in some peoples opinion that camera made people switch to Sony full frame, for at the time the price was what $1700? that camera was like a milestone for Sony....im sure this will as well in this price range..keep up the great content..
THE Perfect allrounder ... and so many lenses available for e mount. But of course also the a7III is still a really good option for a good price if you get with some discount or cashback etc.
The new new new menu system may be "better" but the reality is that I had mastered the old menu system and had no issues. Now I will have to learn a new one, and all on the altar of "better".
The reason is because the sensor is slow. To get 60FPS FF, the entire surface of the sensor must be capable of 60FPS. But this one is simply not fast enough because they prioritised resolution over Framerate.
NEED HELP!!!!!! I have 4 Sony A7IV issues/questions to solve before a big paid gig coming up!!!!! Keep up the great work Jason, just started watching you recently when I was thinking of replacing my X-T4. Note: I just received this camera two days ago from B&H along with the Sony 20mm 1.8 and the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. I am an event and portrait hybrid shooter partially switching over from Fuji mainly because of the better autofocus, the unlimited recording time, the better lens selection and the higher megapixels. I have two X-T4 bodies with several of their best lenses and accessories I'm going to sell one X-T4 now, if the upcoming X-T5 can compete with the A7IV, especially autofocus, then I might stay with Fuji, if not, then I'm selling ALL my Fuji gear and buying another A7IV or one of their higher flagship models. Fuji are you reading this??????????????? 1. When I connect my OSEE 4k external monitor via HDMI to my brand new Sony A7IV, the monitor works great but now I can't get my LCD screen to work at the same time so I can have touch focus and touch tracking during video shooting. The LCD screen just totally goes black every time the monitor is connected. I'm looking all over the internet and RU-vid for a fix, can anybody suggest the right settings that can help me out please? 2. I can't get my Crane S2 to connect with my A7IV via the USB cable, all I really want is for the record button function on the gimble to work, everything else would just be a nice bonus. I read somewhere that it might not be possible to have both an external HDMI output and USB connectivity with the Crane S2 simultaneously. Any experts out there know the real deal???? 3. I experienced a really weird bug already on just the 2nd day of practice shooting. My record button for video just wouldn't do anything, the camera was apparently just staying in standby mode, it was just displaying the green "STBY" message in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, everything looked completely normal on the LCD but I just could not record any video. I switched over to photos and that was fine. Turning the camera on and off did not work either. The only fix was dropping the battery out of the camera for a few and then when I put it back in everything was fine regarding video recording, this was weird and does not really give me a lot of confidence so far with the A7IV? Anybody else experience this weird bug? Sony are you reading this????????????? This issue got me to thinking about number 4 below. 4. Is there a newer firmware out there yet for the A7IV? My camera's currently at 1.00, if there is, what is the link? Thanks for reading this book too, I really appreciate any and all feedback from my NEW Sony Homies! 😆 "Z"
I thought I was watching Potato jet who changed the haircut :) But your videos are great too . Not really sure about a7-4 being obvious choice - a7c still a better deal
hello sir, after seeing ur video and you've given very good information, now, my mind was about to buy A7r3.... but i love to go for A74....really great, your information is so useful many people like me.... Thank you Once again sir May God bless you
Great review! I haven't seen anyone compare the A7IV vs the A7 RIV, they're all either 7III or A1. Any chance of a comparison for people who are more photo inclined vs. hybrid?
@Edmond Xhaferi I went from A7III to A7IV after considering the R IV and don’t regret it. There’s a bunch of nice quality of life changes that the RIV doesn’t have (that the A7RV will probably get whenever that comes out)
