Good video! I know you touched on this a little bit BUT the flip-out screen on a full-frame camera is an absolute game-changer for anyone shooting vlogs with Sony. When the 6400 came out I bought it immediately because of the flip-out screen but still always wanted the full frame for photography NOW you can have both!
I remember networking with you in a Canadian RU-vidr group back when we first started up. Searching for info for a new camera, and you pop up! Glad to see your still at it and having some success! You could almost say - you did it ;)
Dude this video was so awesome for a few reasons: 1. That theme song/great way to test rolling shutter. Also made me miss my drums :/ 2. Im pretty sure you used the infamous dunna zoom that I saw mentioned on twitter! 3. Super informative and well organized.
Nice and informative video! 🙂 I think I'm going for the A7c - mostly because I'm not filming much at all, but I take a lot of action photos (mainly dogs and horses) - and as I come from the Fuji system I like the idea of having a compact full frame camera with a smaller "walk around" lens on for just casual/personal photography 😊
That drum test sold me! I didn't know you were good with those and the gerald undone opening theme makes it even more funny! Amazing comparison here! Hope you can also compare sony a7c + sony 20mm f.18 G versus sony a6600 + sigma 16mm f1.4 in your future videos. I was thinking if the full frame combo would be a good upgrade specially in bokeh and low light portrait and landscape shots.
I have an A6600 and Sigma 16mm f1.4 and it's perfect. Turn on the digital zoom feature and it'll zoom quite a bit so your prime lens turns into a small zoom lens without any loss in quality! I recently just got the 16-55 f2.8 to replace my 16mm but still love the 16mm!
@@Lucas-LeFever thanks for the feedback mate! I'll keep that in mind. Ik still deciding whether to go full frame or aps route. But the a6600 might be good enough for me though. ;)
@@sanghuloom6943 At the price of the a6600, just get the a7c. The a7c + Sigma 24-70 will cover all your bases. You can get similar results but you'll need the Sigma trio on a6600. Nicer f/2.0 equivalent DoF when you need it, but I would take the convenience of a zoom over that 1 stop of DoF difference. Price difference is only a few hundred dollars anyway.
My current opinion is: I'm going to wait about a year from now and am going to buy the a7c on black Friday (or so). I like the smaller body and the viewfinder on the side even being less sharp. My nose often pushes into the screen. About the screen I like if I'm able to turn the screen with the front facing the camera, when packing the camera into a bag. I'm doing a bit of sports photography but only as a hobby and I'm doing the sport myself so I'm right at the fighting area. Im converting from a crop sensor so I'm happy for the larger amount of light on the sensor. And the focusing is really fast on both but doing a few videos with the new color science will help because the sports I'm doing is Karate and the white clothing will look nicer. Thanks for the side by side comparison.
Thanks for the video, I’ve been trying to decide between the Sony a7c and Sony a7 iii and Sony A74 for film making. Which Sony camera Do you think that would be a great camera for Film making?
I was choosing between eos R and a7iii. As a RU-vidr I get eos R - better af and flip out screen... Then I have switched back to sony a6600 with 16-55 f/2.8 - great combo, because of the form factor and versitailty. A7C was a dream come true once it was announced. Order day after. And now I just loooove this camera!!!! Still... more custom buttons, bigger grip as a6600 and new menu plus active stabilization from a7siii would be hiiiiighly appreciatet. A7CII?! 😃
Great video and help me decide - I HATE the 30 min record limit on the A7iii that alone will make my switch along with improved eye autofocus and flippy screen
I think the main reason things like customs are gone was to cut down on weight. Sony was really pushing this idea it was the smallest full frame camera ever. I'd be really interested in a a7c2 or a a73 version 2. When the a74 comes out its going to be so far out of my price range that I don't even care. A full frame, ibis, 2 card slots and decent modern tech for under 2k. That's what I really need. The Nikon Z 6II is starting to look good.
Your channel has really helped me. I started my channel 6 weeks ago and already have 100 subs. That feels pretty good, but it's hard to know what is good progress
Great comparison. Missed: max shutter speed of 1/4000 will void usage of f1.8 glass without ND filters on bright sunny conditions, max flash sync speed of 1/160 is too slow for use with non HSS capable flashes, Always on eFront curtain guarantees banding when using HSS third-party flashes. EDIT: basically, if you plan to use OCF (Off Camera Flash) with A7C then better prepare to buy only Sony branded speedlights or be restricted to 1/160 shutter speed.
Thanks for testing. Can I ask, what lens was you using for ibis test, did the lens have oss switched on? Was it same lens on both cameras? Thanks dude.
As always great video. I currently have an A6600, but seem find it difficult to get my images sharp like I want them. I was looking to get a full frame and I've heard great things about the A7 III. My question would be what would you think about either one of these cameras for real estate photography?
Best straight to the hands on points video I've seen comparing these two cameras. I was leaning towards the A7C because of the color science, but the physical usability points of the A7III may have changed my mind. I found a video that had great profile settings for A7III, so that may be the solution. I'll keep looking for quick color fixes. Getting back to camera work per new job. New subscriber 👍
They are fostex pm3 (I think that’s the name) and no I wouldn’t use them for music production. They’re too small. No bass basically. Just handy to have something.
Dunna you did it again. Great video. Loved the Gerald undone drums you did. I just bought the a7iii and coming from the a7ii. What a big difference. The autofocus is amazing. I cant really compare the EVF or LCD to anything since I've never tried any other model besides my old Canon rebel and a7ii. But for me the dual SD card slots was the major reason I got the a7iii since I do alot of paid work and owe it to my clients to have a safety back up. Thanks again Dunna
You’ll get less of that blur with the catalyst stabilization if you crank the shutter speed really high. It has an easier time stabilizing vids when each frame is sharper from a fast shutter speed
Yes, you will have less motion blur for sure, but then you’ll have that “cranked shutter” look. It might be worth it for certain situations though 🤷🏻♂️ just a trade off you have to decide.
@@dunnadidit Ive never really noticed that look when Ive seen CB clips - I just see steady clips - I don't think people will notice if the clips are 3 - 5 seconds long. I really think its a very useful feature especially if you don't want to transport and balance a gimbal for 2 or 3 small clips that could make all the difference to your video.
A7III is the best bang for the buck even today (04.2023). It does so many things right for the fraction of the cost of newer cameras. You can’t go wrong with this model.
It's simple. The A7C for vloggers and videographers. The A7III for photographers. One is not better than the other. They cater to 2 different target audiences.
@@dunnadidit I was typing it before the end of the video. I'm glad you came to that conclusion as people are angry at Sony. It is not a successor to the A7III, and people seem not to see this.
@@AshwinRamdin haha great minds think alike!! Yeah I totally agree! This is just another option with some nuanced differences for specific people. It’s actually really interesting because it splits Sony’s customer base a bit. So it’s good for consumers (once they get past the difficult decision)!
Great as always! ❤ One thing I'm not sure about which also happens to be off topic is that I plan to buy a portrait lens that is either an 85mm 1.4 or 70-200 2.8. Please clarify, is the bokeh at 200 f2.8 more than the bokeh at 85mm f1.4? Thank you...
What was your shutter speed on the A7C when you turned off the IBIS and used Catalyst Browse? I saw some wobbling. To counter that, people have found, if you use a higher shutter speeds, it will eliminate the stabilization wobble. I would love to see a future video of you testing stabilization with a higher shutter speed.
There are 2 issues with post stabilization; rolling shutter and motion blur. Higher shutter speed will fix motion blur, but rolling shutter in 4K will likely mean needing to shoot in 1080 to avoid. Shooting in crop 4K might help too, haven’t seen anyone test it though
Aweosme video Dunna . The Image quality from both camera when you are on the treadmill doesn't show the yellowish blown out effect as on the beginning of the video. In fact both images look very similar. I own both as well, so I'm wondering if there it was a setting or something that caused it because I wasn't able to replicate such difference. Thank you in advance.
I basically just set my white balance against a white wall in the gym. But there is a bit of a color grade slapped on. But other than that, both were just in standard mode, no creative style and no picture profile. I think the lighting is the big difference
Gerald Undone Drum breakdown very clever and his theme is very catchy. I struggle with this. I agree with what you said, pretty much boils down to do you need custom buttons or not. The big pluses are for video shooters. That better color, and the flip out screen. My wife uses the a6600 and she likes that compact size so I am thinking of getting her the a7c and then I will just use the a7siii and then sell off both my a6600 and my a7iii but we shall see. Another banger! Nice job dude!
Seems like you’ve got a good plan though. As long as you’re happy to buy and sell a million cameras all the time (which you seem to have no issue with lol)
@@dunnadidit So believe it or not I am having a hard time selling my 1,700 shutter count A6600 (pretty much open-box new) for $1K. But Ya you know me I have no problems buying and selling LOL.
Yes, got to shoot high shutter speed using the gyro data in Catalyst. The a7C only works with the new Bluetooth remote (I know!). Another thing is that you can't connect a remote shutter cable for time-lapses from say a Rhino slider, because they aren't that same USB standard (the a7C only has USB-C).
Usually camera manufacturers solve issues or omissions of their first innovative camera model soon with their second model. For example Sony with the a7 II of 2014 changed the position of shutter knob of a7 of 2013 and added IBIS, uncompressed raw etc. Nikon with the D610 of 2013 changed the problematic shutter mechanism of D600 of 2012. Canon R5 and R6 of 2020 had dual memory slots instead the one slot of the original R model. I predict that the second model of a7C will be launched in 2022, a year after the Sony a7 IV introduction. The Sony a7C II will certainly have the new touch screen enabled menu system, larger EVF, better hand grip, better shutter mechanism and probably dual SD slots. However if Sony do all these with Sony a7C II what's the reason for someone to buy the Sony a7 IV with the same sensor or if the price of Sony a7C II is much lower than 1800$ what's the reason for someone to buy the a6600 or the future a6700.
This, exactly. If the A7C really had only one custom button you could program, it would almost be unusable. Now, you don't need a button for ISO when there's this "My Dial" mode, and I believe video can still be shot in a video mode using the shutter button, so if you can get used to that, you could always give yourself the movie button as an extra custom button. From all 6 videos of the A7C I've watched before this one, I never once heard this was an option. So thanks!
@@HermanGroenbroek I never use the actual movie record button since I’ve been able to trigger video recording with the shutter button (a6400 I think). And being able to customize the movie record button is a new thing so I’m stoked to have it on my a7siii (and for anyone with the A7c too)
It goes without saying since I have to assume you know you crush consistently, but I loved this comparison. Love the channel too, so there’s that. Keep up the great work!
Dpreview made the point that the C didn't really need a joystick because of the newer AF. They put af box over the subject and pressed the rear AF button and ot tracked what ever was selected. I think Lok said the same thing saying why would you work any other way with it because it was so easy to use.
I can see that for sure, especially for video I find the touch much more intuitive, but I did miss the joystick just a bit (and the fact that it, itself is a button). Just one more thing to put down as personal preference between different buyers/shooters. That seems to be the name of the game between these two cameras.
Dunna, huge question and wasn’t sure where to ask. I have a canon m50 now but screen is broken and never really felt wow about the camera. Is the Sony A7C worth the cash and what two sub $400 lenses in 24, 35 or 50 would be best do you think? I would be down for a conversation even, if that would make it easier. Thanks in advance for any advice. I’ve got some thoughts of what to get but you have a lot more experience with Sony cameras than I do.
I was interested in hearing this... I currently use the A7iii mostly for photo (or when I need FF) and A6600 for video purely as the screen flips up and it has face track AF if using hdmi. I dont shoot enough video to warrant the A7Siii as Id be losing loads of photo pixels. I shall wait for the A7iv and see what that brings. Nice descriptive and factual video tho Dunna. :)
I went from a5000 to a6000, then onto a6400, im not much of using the camera for video, and i love the size of the 6400 , thats why i was thinking of eventually upgrading to the a7c, I only have 2 lenses so far, sigma 16mm and sony 18-105mm
Yeah if you like that size, the A7c is gonna be great! It will feel very familiar from the 6400 but you are going to LOOOOOVE the battery life with the new batteries haha.
I'm trying to decide between those two. The A7 iii right now is cheaper and I would go for that one, but the autofocus and colors look better on the a7c in video mode. Can you grade the a7 iii's video towards more natural tone and live with the AF? Because I think the a7 iii is easier to handle of you got big hands, like me and wanna use the EVF with glasses.
@@dunnadidit is the autofocus the same with photography? I currently have the a7c but thinking of trading it for the iii due to the grip/size only, I mainly do photography but I don’t want to take a step back when it comes to tracking and focus
not a solution, but you can customize the EVF to show the histogram, so i just look into the EVF for the histogram and look back at my monitor for the regular settings.
I'm not cool with the shutter. I still use strobes (underwater) that are limited to the flash sync speed of the camera (no high speed sync) and the a7c is a step down from the rest of the a7 series at 1/160 max. Same as the aps-c shutters. Also only 1/4000 max instead of 1/8000. And lastly having no mechanical front curtain shutter can cause slight issues with flash photography and in general at very fast shutter speeds. So basically if you want to progress with flash photography, this ain't it. OK, that shouldn't be a big gripe considering the form factor for a more casual/walkaround use. And if it were $500 cheaper I wouldn't even bring it up.
Lol 😂 my bad, for some reason I thought this was a comment on my a6600 vs a7iii video 🤦🏻♂️ but what I said still works, just exchange a6600 for A7c. The flip screen is nice for self filming.
I changed my mind and wanted the a7c BUT THE CROP. After dealing with a crop on the 5d mark 4, I don't even wanna look at the 7c even with a small crop. ;( In your opinion is a 1.2x crop that big of a deal?
Oh!! The 30fps crop. The a7iii has that too. Honestly I barely shoot 30p so I don’t notice it... but it’s pretty minor. Take half a step back and generally you’re fine.
I went with the A7III for the better ergonomics and the dual card slots. I hope to make a big trip, next year and losing a day's shooting to a card glitch would be unmitigated suckage. I did add an A6400 with the kit lens as a vlogging/gimbal camera. I'm upgrading the A6400 to the A6600 with the 10-20 f/4 PZ lens. I'll be pretty pretty well set on camera bodies at that point, and future upgrades will probably be lenses. I thought about the FX30, but everybody's backordered on it, and nobody can say when they'll actually be able to ship an order. And frankly, the FX30 means new, high-dollar cards and a computer upgrade to run Catalyst, so the cost difference is more than just the $400 difference between the FX30 and the A6600.
I just got an a7iii on sale with a good kit lens and I’m really happy with it. Sadly the a7c is still not available in my country, the only thing I regret not having is the flippy screen, but for now I just connected a cheap hdmi monitor and the AF works fine for my talking head videos 👍
@Dunna Did it how do A7c compare to A7S III? I'm thinking about getting a camera for video but can't decide. Have no money for all brand, sorts and style cameras :D
I am new to Sony cameras and have ordered the A7s III. I also need a photography camera and that will also be a Sony camera...but not right now. The main reason is really simple...I don't want to learn two different menu systems. There are great sales on the Sony A9II and the Sony A7R IV cameras now but I just cannot pull the trigger on them because of that reason.
@@dunnadidit I am looking forward to it. Normally I would be fine with the 12 megapixels as you can print a 14.30 x 9.34 image at 300 dpi. However there is one job I do that requires a magazine print that bigger than that and so I need more that what the A7s III can provide. I am really hoping that the next camera Sony ships will be January/February 2021.
I’m switching to the Sony from the Nikon Z6 mainly because the focusing system isn’t up to par. So I think I’m going with the a7c for the subject tracking and better autofocus. I’m worried that the small body would be less comfortable and not having 3 dials to change iso on the fly. I’m thinking I can get used to pressing the ISO button on the wheel. Also I’m worried about the grip when I graduate to nicer and heavier lenses? Are my concerns justified or should I be fine?
There are little workarounds for all of those things! You do get used to the settings without the dials, you can also get third party grips that help if you’re having trouble there. I’d say that the A7c is a solid choice, especially if you know and understand it’s shortcomings when you go into it
Got the a7III and was about to sale it for the a7c… But now, because of you… I don't know anymore… ;) I'm using an A7sIII for video and the a7III for photo work. In the end I think you're right, I'll wait for an eventual a7IV. Thx for the advice.
@@clickawaymedia9131 I already own an a7iii. And actually the a7iii is a bit more of a solid hybrid between photo/video anyway. So it ends up doing a bit of both for me. I’d love an a7r someday but I don’t really need it at the moment.
Dear Sir, Could you make an episode or help me with A7c and DJI RSC2. Lot of confusion with video/photo setup it seems. Would really help me make my first vlog setup purchase decision. Thanks.
Unfortunately, I don’t have either of those (the A7c was just a loaner from Sony) but they would make a fantastic combo for video shooters if I had to guess!
Great video as usual, Dunna! Thankyou! Like you, I was also shocked you were not as definitive! LOL! I think for me, the A7III, if I were in the market. I'm still rockin' the magic combo of the A6400 + Sigma 16mm f1.4. Good choice of drum sticks!! 😁 👍🏾
How is the viewfinder on the A7c? I've heard that it's quite small. I'm coming from analog so a decent viewfinder is paramount. I do love the compactness and weight reduction, something easy to throw over my shoulder is important. Size+weight is the reason I returned my DSLR and turned away from digital photography years ago lol.
Yeah unfortunately the viewfinder is a bit smaller due to the reduction in overall size. If a killer viewfinder is a must, this might not be the way to go
@@dunnadidit I'll see if I can get my hands on them (literally) before I buy. Maybe I'd find the viewfinder manageable. And if I'm more into the A7III is the A7r4 worth the extra money? I presume that the upgraded sensor would only be apparent when one is really blowing up their photos. Thanks for the reply.
I bought the Sony A7III a week ago and never used it. I am planning to return it because I heard a lot of them will get a broken shutter. Now I am thinking to get the A7C but I heard it doesn’t have such a good image stabilization. I don’t know what to do.
if u can find a solution it will much appreciated because a compact gimbal and a compact camera is a perfect combo unless you can’t control shutter with gimbal.
I have a whole video on this! My general advice is that MOST PEOPLE don’t need full frame... yes it’s technically better quality. Yes there are some more features... but will the a6600 give you great quality and probably everything you need? ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY!
I've been using the a6600 for a few months now. It's really good. I would still like to get full frame, but the lenses are just too expensive. Sigma makes great cheap lenses for apsc. Check out my channel to see what you can do with the a6600.
I was at the same place a year ago. Firstly I discovered Sony a6400. I was almost decided but then a6600 has been released. I saved some money and went for a6600 with 16-55 2.8 lens. I am extremely happy with that camera and with that lens. Now I realized that is more important to have nice editing software and a gimbal to make a videos more cinematic. I just ordered Davinci Resolve (now they offer studio version together with speed editor for free) in studio version as I'm using free version right now with some limitations. Then the gimbal - I was almost decided to go with weebill s but... DJI just released RS2 and RSC2. Handheld is nice in 60% of the time. But you follow all nice RU-vidrs and want to create same quality. In the meantime I learnt that you also need to have ND filter, otherwise videos or photos shoot outside will be... very bad. It is good to have a backpack, peak design slides, extra battery with Newell's charger, small rig and obviously a mic :) I the future I will go for lighting. Good PC with 64 GB of RAM and powerful GPU will be also a nice to have. So the camera is just a starting point :)
Without black friday discount, it's a no-brainer to pick a7c or a7iii over the a6600. Even with the discounts, a7c + Sigma 24-70 = $2,800 a6600 + Sigma trio primes = $2,500 For only $300 difference, I would pick the convenience of the zoom and higher dynamic range of the full frame sensor. The jump in dynamic range is absolutely ridiculous. On APS-C I would never go above 6400 ISO, but on the A7iii I was calmly shooting 12,800 without worrying. Why I needed that? I was shooting sports in near pitch black with f/1.8 primes. On APS-C I had to go to 25,600 ISO at f/1.8. Still can't match the A7iii at 12,800.
@@professionalpotato4764 hey! I was exactly looking to buy my first camera right now & the black friday prices are good. I am a video shooter more than photographer but I am still more convinced of the a7iii for the buttons & the overall specs of it (even though the a7c might have a tiny bit better video capabilities). Do you think this is a good choice? Also, I don’t have much money rn for lenses so I was planning on getting the a7iii with the 28-70mm kit lense. Do you think this is the right choice or are there any other good zoom lenses in the same price range that would suit me better for video?
Oh can’t you connect the remote with a7c ? 😭 I’m using the remote a lot with my a6400 & planning to upgrade to a7c . Without the remote control it’s kind of useless to me 😫
Another great review and video, to me it still feels like the A7iii is the superior all around camera- i cant see the difference in compactability, if a camera is designed for spending time in a bag trading off the comfortability of taking photos then seems like someone has made a mistake. the flip screen is the only big change i could count as positive
@@dunnadidit and yet, a back to me would probably be something in the like of to 6000, if to go for something smaller that would be my choice. and there are so many A6100/A6500/A6400 going for real cheap second hand. Why would someone need a back up full frame ?
Well, that was a great come up the decision after watching this video. I will Prefer a7C for those who are into video (Even I am going to buy) a7C because it has unlimited video recording compared to a7III But will it be good to use for shooting weddings and events?
Doesn’t a second function menu mean that you can program each programmable button to do 2 things like using control +1-5 as functions then using control+shift +1-5 as another group so you go from 5-10 fuctions by using shift ... I’m. It telling I’m asking .::does it mean that even though you have half the function keys you can do just as many functions like by using function + record+programmable button equals extra function ... I’m sorry if this doesn’t make sense
Haha I’m not quite following you. The function menu is a specific menu that pops up on screen with some “easy access” controls. The difference with the A7c is that your function menu will be slightly different depending on whether you’re in video or photo mode. That said, what you’re talking about with programming each custom button to multiple functions is also possible on the a7iii. You can have a separate set of custom button functions for photo and video on both these cameras. The difference is that on the a7iii... you get way more buttons. I think that you also asked about hitting the function key in conjunction with other buttons but it doesn’t work like that (it’s not a modifier button unfortunately.
@@dunnadidit sorry I haven’t received mine yet I was thinking you were talking about something else snd I was commenting based on another video I saw...if I can find the video I will post a link but basically they said it was possible to program 2 sets of functions into your programable keys and not being familiar with the menu I got those 2 things confused I thought it was a program function list like when you set up hot keys on a keyboard ... thank you for clearing that up and if I can track that video down I will post I like ... I’ve been away from a camera for a very long time. My last camera was Canon 60D and I decided to come back to my hobby this year. I love photo and video (used to film a lot). I think A7C is a great choice for my first mirrorless camera as I miss the 60D flip screen and it’s compact. I wish it had a better viewfinder tho.
