If you’re shooting with the viewfinder to your eye, you can use your thumb on the touchscreen to move the focus point the same way you would move the joystick. Works pretty well. It’s called Touch Panel Settings on the A7Cii

Feels like it's a bit of stretch for the thumb to cover the entire screen but hey, lemme try that and see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestion!

@@MaverickAsio you can set the active area to just a half or quarter (or any other portion), and also you can set the mode to be 'relative' instead of 'absolute', so then it drags the focus box from where it is, thus you can use a very small area of the screen to move the box over the entire frame!

Sounds great brother! Do check out the Sony A7IV and Sony A7CR too. They're the the closest thing to the CII for full-frames.

Good review. The negatives, especially the tiny EVF, are what caused me to sell an a7c I purchased last year. My main cameras are an a7III and a7IV and I couldn't get comfortable with the drawbacks of Sony's compact full frame body since the reduction in size with a lens is minimal.

Thanks Tom, appreciate it. I do agree with the tiny evf on the original a7c. The a7cII has an improved evf over its predecessor. Very much useable I’d say. Maybe it’ll work for you this time around.

Just Curious... Why did you cover the Logo & branding on the camera? you put black squares over the Alpha logo & 7C part, even covered the little text at the top?

It's a habit actually. For me, it does 2 things: 1). keeps the camera all black and 2). protects all the logos from being scratched off.

OH! that does make good sense, especially if you plan on selling it on sooner or later, good idea... i originally thought it was to stop thieves being able to google it quickly and see how expensive it is before they deem it worth snatching lol quite a common thing in london :(@@MaverickAsio

Why is the video seeming to be skipping frames (seen as the object is walking) in the first video?

Thanks for bringing it up. There’s actually a note in the description on which timepoints the video was messed up. Must have been due to the upload process 🤷‍♂️

This is going to be my next camera, because I am a street photographer, I like small cameras, Fuji is good by this camera blasts everything away, the only thing I literally hate is the screen. This flip vlogger screen is atrocious, I wish it was a tilting screen, it just looks stupid and it's not helping out when you are out in the street.

I’ve been using the flip out screen for a few years now and I’d say I’m still getting used to it. Sometimes I find it useful and sometimes, not really.

It seems that more people are choosing the silver variant. I recently visited one of the local stores and they told me that they actually sell more of the silver ones than the black version. Interesting!

2 things are a total No-Go for me, so that I will buy the A7 IV instead of this: 1. the viewfinder. The resolution and size are somewhat acceptable but the missing eyecap is really bad. Sure, you could add an aftermarket eye cap like shown in the video, but these things are all way too big and extremely ugly AND you are losing the hot shoe, so it's no option for me. I have absolutely no idea why Sony decided to give this no eyecap, just not understandable. Even my old A6500 which has a similar viewfinder, has a nice eyecap. 2. the smaller grip.

Apropos screen.... almost forgot a 3rd No-Go point: The flip screen. I don't like that you can't just turn it up like with the other Sony cameras, but have to flip it out to the side first before you can turn it up. I'm very often turning the screen up because I like taking photos from near the ground. That must be possible quickly. I think that's very annoying with the flip screen of the A7CII. Seems the A7CII is more meant for vloggers or people who who absolutely want to have the smallest FF camera and therefor are accepting to lose a lot of convenience. But then I'm wondering why seemingly everyone puts a Smallrig plate onto the camera to make it bigger. What's the point on buying a smaller camera with some major compromises to then attach a plate to make it bigger? Don't really get it.

@@Thunderbird1337 i guess it boils down to preference and willingness to downscale ergonomics and ease of use. From my own experience in using the a7cii for professional work, it has its limitation (or at least when compared to cameras that I have been used to) but they’re definitely tolerable and very much useable. I put smallrig plate because it is easier to attach to tripods (additional grip was a bonus). Different strokes for different folks if you get what I mean. What works for one does not mean it works for someone else. What works for you does not mean it works for everyone else. Cheers!
