I bought the z6 and the a7III and used them both for a whole year of weddings. I ended up keeping the z6 and selling the a7III. When comparing the a7III to the z6 firmware 3 the AF is near identical. The Nikon is far ahead in grip, build, weather sealing, EVF, IBIS, raw video, 10 bit external, touch screen, menus, and colors sooc. The only two areas the Sony is better is in battery life which is close to double, and the ability to power the camera while running via USB. The z6 is by far the most underrated camera, at the current $1799 price and firmware 3.0 it is amazing. Still bummed about the single card slot.

I'm someone who's always used Canon. I love their glass, and I love their make and feel. I still do. I used a Canon 5Diii until a year back. Bought a Sony a7iii last year to get into the mirrorless market mainly because EOS R was kinda expensive and lacking in the lens department. I still use my old Canon during travel because it has wayyyy better battery life compared to the modern Sony, but I have to say that Sony's AF is astounding. And the eye tracking is phenomenal! Even under low light! Also, the two main lenses I use with it (70-200 GM and the Sigma 35mm/1.4) are absolutely amazing. I can't go back to my old 70-200 IS lens anymore. Haha. I'm excited for Canon's upcoming R5 though. Also for the new compact 70-200. Will probably use that as my second camera in a year or so if the world doesn't end by then. Haha.

Without the Sony a7iii I would have never switched to FF. Combined with awesome third party lenses from Samyang and Tamron, it's just about affordable en portable enough for me!

Amazing to see how quickly both Nikon and Canon catching up with their 1st gen mirrorless against Sony's 3rd gen. So happy to see finally we have real competitions is mirrorless market, which is really great for us :D

Guys, one of the early Canon firmware updates has corrected the noise pattern issue when extremely pushing in the shadows. This is know and well documented and does, as a result, improve dynamic range results, which are really close to the rest of the pack, in a way that many would say any difference is minimal (DPReview agrees in their latest article on which the vid is based upon). DPReview however have not updated their studio scene test and their test shots do not reflect that. I am mentioning this because in the video you said that Canon has not made any changes in dynamic range behaviour through firmware.

What pushes me to choose Sony are the Tamron 2.8 zooms. The others don’t have competing lenses at similar costs and size. Waiting for the 7IV to improve on ergo/LCD/EVF.

Would be cool to see a S1 in the mix! Especially since it also improved a lot via firmware updates

EVF guys, EVF... Reviewers are not paying enough attention to that hugely important part of the mirrorless cameras. A high res, high refresh rate, bright and accurate EVF is very very important imo. And not all cameras have it as of 2020...

Earlier in the year I helped someone buy the Sony A7iii, he tried to convince me to switch to mirrorless but I was being stubborn and thinking that I was going to stick to DLSRs for the foreseeable future. Well during a photoshoot with 2 young dancers, knowing that the Sony A7iii would have a much easier time tracking the things they did than my Nikon D750, I took it with me despite only having an 85mm 1.8 lens for it. I ended up using it for 90% of the photoshoot and that convinced me to get the Nikon Z6 (and sell the D750 and D500).

1:51 it's very personal thing, what screen is the best. Of course canon gives more angles. But for some shooters it's more comfortable to use simple tilting mechanism.

3rd party lenses is a big deal for me: I chose Sony A7III only because I could buy Tamron 28-75 2.8 as a travel lens. Both Nikon and Canon need 1000+$ more to buy 24-70, because no 3rd party glass exist for Z or R mount, you can buy another 1-2 lenses for Sony for that money.

Nobody’s going to be disappointed with any of these cameras and don’t think anything has changed significantly to move anyone away from their particular brands, which is really good for the market and competition. Look forward to seeing more third party lenses for both the Canon and Nikon however adaptors do a good job.

the Sony a7III was my introduction to digital photography, I'm glad it's still relevant. I'm blown away! because of all the options these things have compared to my old film cameras

The third party lenses takes Sony over the line and I'm a Nikon shooter.

tbh ive used all three and the one that just feels the nicest to use is the R, when it just feels nice to use a camera I feel more inspired and create more and better images.

I think Nikon's approach to their Z mount lenses makes a lot of sense: Focus on the lenses most people are going to use most often. 35, 50, and 85mm primes. Standard zooms for enthusiasts and pros alike.

I got an EOS R at launch and I love it. Still only using EF lenses on it with the Canon adapter, but performance is amazing. Literally my only complaint is I wish the Fn touch bar was replaced with a joystick. Though, I haven't had any issues using the touch screen to move my focus points.

Great video guys, as always! I feel like this comparison is more than relevant today with all the improvements that Canon and Nikon have introduced in their cameras since they first came out. Still, they're playing catch-up and Sony, although not as far ahead as it once was remains the king of mirrorless full-frame having a more matured system, greater selection of both cameras and lenses to cater for different needs and audiences, so let's hope it doesn't fall asleep in the lead and see how it reacts to Canon's up-coming EOS R5 and R6.

I was curious about the pricing of those cameras an just looked it up. As of now you can buy a canon EOS R for as low as 1900 Euro, a Sony A7iii for 1844 Euro and a Nikon Z6 for 1500 Euro, which makes the z6 easily the best bang for the buck. Keep in mind that prices may differ in different regions. Greetings from Germany :)

I moved from Fuji to using the a7iii for a year now. I wish I had moved sooner. I have no issues with the grip (I do use the battery grip b/c I shoot only portraits). I only miss focus 1-2% of the time. I love the AF!!! The 3rd party lens support is great and getting better all the time. It's punches very high for value. Wait till the a7iv comes out!!!

What i need is : - Body and build from nikon Z6 - Menu system, color management, back screen, and autofocus from EOS R (because dual pixel is still best of the best) - Camera sensor from Sony A7iii

I had the A7iii. I liked it a lot, I bought the z6 for Christmas just to try out ( I wasnt planing to send it back in 14 days if I dont like it). I ended up selling the A7iii. The z6 just do most things a lot better then the A7iii, this video doesn't really give justice to it. -better building -much better screen -better usability -better feeling -better clors -better senzor - better lenses ( less then the Sony, but what Nikon Z has is a lot better) -much better IBIS -faster card

As good as it is feature-wise, and for image quality, two things For sure hold me back from jumping to Sony - that EVF, and the handling. I get this is more subjective, and the touchbar on the EOS R isn’t loved by anyone, but the Canon still feels way better in my hand. The A7III is a huge improvement over the A7II, but still not enough.

I just got my nikon z6 2 weeks ago. I asked my friend what do you think of the camera? She said it’s underpriced because it is really the best packaged camera. The LCD is amazing, the ergonomics, the quality of photos and the video. I highly recommend. I picked this camera over SONY a73 eventhough I saw many reviewers especially the ones on YT and social media use Sony. I doubt it at first but I just followed my gut and now I have no regret. 😇

I'm sorry but the nikon has way better image quality than the Sony! Way sharper, dynamic range is better, Sony blows out specular highlights terribly!

As a portrait and event shooter, who does hours of work a day, I need reliable output, comfy ergonomics and balance (which are for me more important than overal weight) and through build. Since I'm kinda skilled and AF needs to be just fast and reliable (I can cope with some limits in functions), I decided to stick to my system's top DSLR. But I wish mirrrorless to improve.

Remember, you can mount EF lenses with an excellent adapter on the Z6.

At this point who cares what you buy. One edges out the others in this area and the other edges out in this area. Each system can easily produce great images and video. A skilled artist can use any of these

Sounds like you can’t go wrong with any of them.. I went with the z6 and I’ve not been disappointed.. videos come out excellent photos are amazing.. native glass is spectacular.. would some f1.2 or f1.4 be nice? Yes but it would also be expensive and I probably would be adapting everything if they had that eos r strategy.. I don’t know a single eos r user with native glass because it’s crazy money. Also I’m able to adapt Sony and Canon lenses with a cheap adapter and it works very well so the lens range is covered.. the power of that giant mount is showing.

Should we really judge image quality only by pushing shadows 6 stops?

Yes...i was headed for the R then thought that if i was going to get the benefit of the system and native glass I would never pay the sort of money Canon want for their RF glass! So went for the Nikon instead and can also use EF lenses on it as well so I'm very happy as always preferred the Nikon colours and rendering.

Have people commenting on the video and saying something else is better really all these cameras, lol. All I know is that I like my Nikon Z6, the best camera available, for me. I don't think about Canon and Sony for a second, but when Nikon comes out with the next generation ... 100%. Nice review.

A flippy screen is useful for video and portrait orientation and a tilt screen is quite handy for street photography, depends on your usage really. But I still think A99's flip screen is better though, fuji's tilt screen is also more useful than the current a73 one.

I have Z6 with 24-70mm S. I would love a 24-110 or something like that. I have 18-105mm on my D5200 and I like the flexibility. I like not having to switch the glass to zoom to say 100mm.

What about battery life? That was a huge factor for me when choosing Sony A7 3. Had Nikon Z6 had a larger battery, I would have chosen that camera due to ergonomics.

I'am really interested to see how Canon's next generation R6&R5 are going to compete against Sony's a7 iv/a7r iv, after all these improvements they made in such a short time. But there is still no replacement in sight for Nikon's Z6&Z7.

I think it would have been good to include the Panasonic S1 this time, but from what I have seen, it can be hard to get one lately.

In many DPReview videos, we see Jordan giving very detailed and useful information regarding each individual camera's video settings and capabilities. In several DPReview videos, Jordan gives lots of very useful information with regards to how he edits / enhances / processes the videos in preparation for posting to RU-vid. What would be really useful (as so many RU-vidrs, including myself, shoot our content on iPhones) would be to see how Jordan would film/record a video for DPReview. Then how Jordan would edit and post-process the video in preparation for posting ?? This would certainly be a very useful video for many DPReview followers/subscribers.

I´ve used two of these cameras extensively, the Sony a7iii and Canon EOS R. I agree on everything that’s said in this video. But there’s some things not mentioned that I want to address. What I don’t like about the Sony cameras is that dust very easily sticks to their sensors. In that regard the shutter mechanism of Canon EOS R is brilliant. Not so brilliant is that EOS R is prone to banding when using HDR software to get most out of the sensor bandwidth. I’m sorry to say that Sony a7iii feels very, very sluggish when it comes to user interface. I’ve started to count clicks when turning the shutter & aperture dial because visual response is so slow. The camera feel like an amateur camera with a premium sensor. For nature photography a7iii is great, but I’m often struggling with face colors. They lack some red, and it’s not easy to correct in post. My favorites in that regard is Canon and Olympus color. Sony and Panasonic is still not good enough. Fujifilm i have not tried. So I tend to work longer with Sony files in post to get them good. My last criticism about Sony a7iii is it’s continuous autofocus speed when shooting video. It’s not impressive because it often lags behind. Without doing a proper side by side test, I feel that Canon EOS R does better. Also EOS 1Dx ii was better keeping focus when running both cameras on the same dolly closing up to a persons face. Maybe some tweaking of settings may improve this. Settings were default on both Sony and Canon cameras. Anyway, I find both Sony a7iii and Canon EOS R promising, but I’m not satisfied yet.

How about the Lumix S1

A few thoughts on the Nikon-everything about the video quality completely floored me, from the color science, to the detail, to the continuous autofocus, to the excellent in-body stabilization. I loved it, I much preferred the image from it to the Panasonic GH4 and GH5 that I've used before, more three-dimensionality and dynamic range. It was leagues ahead of the Canon 5D II I used for years. Picture quality is likewise amazing, especially low light, which seemed ridiculously clean and detailed. The FTZ adapter, on the other hand, was a mixed bag. On the lenses that it worked with, I found I got significantly better performance than on the D600 or D800. There were a lot of lenses that didn't work, though-older Sigmas, AF-D lenses of course, and crop sensor lenses with full-sensor coverage like the 35mm f/1.8 and the 10-20mm f/4-5.6 force you to use DX crop, unlike with FF DSLRs. I found the lenses I had depended on most, were not supported, meaning the $1800 I paid for the camera would need to double to get the lenses I would need. Also, because of the huge difference in flange distance and mount diameter, the FTZ adapter looked like a spaceship, and all of the F lenses looked silly and felt somewhat unbalanced on the Z6. So, I sent it back after two weeks, with many regrets. Now that the Fringer and Techart Canon EF-Nikon Z adapters have come out, I would seriously consider switching over again to the Z system and adapting Canon glass...

Half a year ago, I bought the Nikon Z6 standard suit. Now I have taken a lot of photos. Recently, I am waiting for the 70-200 new lens to be sold

Flippy screens vs. fully articulated is 100% a question of personal preference. Personally ? I ditched the (otherwise really neat) EOS RP because of the articulated screen, and will never buy again anything BUT a tilt LCD, which are way better for still, imo ;)

Hey guy's the ftz adaptor ...it works with all my lens, including the 1 st gen of nikon 70-200 f/2.8 all my sigmas...and even older sigmas like the 17-50mm f/2.8 also tokina works with them, so it isn

All these are great cameras. Its just a matter of preference. In my 11 yrs of photography, i agreed what others always say. Its the person who is making the picture.

One thing is incorrect both Canon and Nikon Lenses offer way more than choices that Sony don’t even come close neither quality or quantity every Sony user has been adapting canon lenses for the longest and Nikon has some of the best class just use FTZ adapter Period plus all third party Manufacturer’s make lenses for canon and Nikon just use adapter I guess you forgot people have been using Canon EF mount Sigma 18-35 since it’s inception no one complained than,keeping on saying Sony has more lens choice is an incorrect statement

Great video. I agree with you but there os something you hace missed, which is the water sealing, and if you have a Sony you should be worried about it.

As good as the Sony is, I can't get past the color. Who wants to always correct in post? Should be right, straight out of the camera.

I used to shoot Fujifilm. And every time a new camera from Fuji comes up I feel the need to upgrade. Ever since getting a Sony a7 iii since launch, I’ve never felt the urge in the past years to ever upgrade bodies. The camera nails shots effortlessly and that’s all that matters!

By all means test Canon for a tricky high dynamic range situation landscape portrait and criticize it for not being up to par in reality no one should be shooting that image without a proper graduated filter. And the image quality these days is most depended on the quality of lenses rather than minor differences in sensor performance. If you are specialized enough to need that extra capabilities of the sensor you probably aren't watching this video to decide which camera to buy.

I have the Z6. Love it. Just bought the Z50 to go with it. I love they use the same mount on all their mirrorless. Slapped the 50 1.8 right on the Z50 and the shots looked great.

Everyone always complains about 4k video crop but for me, as someone who mainly uses video for macro, I find it to be a positive thing.

If you are a pro, using your camera everyday, yes, you will get used to Sony chaotic menu system. However, if you are an enhusiast/hobbyist, who only use camera occasionally, "continuous re-learning" of he menu system gets old after awhile. Sony camera might be most capable, but it's also most unpleasant to use.

Here in Europe the Eos R is the most expensive and the Z6 (by far) the lowest priced ...

been a canon shooter..loved it but eos R rf mount expensive lenses and i dont really trust the adapter made me switch to sony. with the tamron trinity and sigma art. i want eos r but native glass options made me hesitate

Handling - I dont agree on that point, if it's easy to use then it means the interface is spot on, usability above anything else, can't see how you can have Sony infront of a eos r makes absolutly no sense.

I agree with most, but if you look at comparisons, you will find that. The Sonys also have banding sometimes. Within two years i have not had a single Situation where banding came up and even simulations of a situation where it should come up were ultimately unsuccessful. It is a non-issue that after more than two years, has apparently not ruined anyone's shots so far. I don't get why it is still brought up.

I guess it's fair to give the lens win to Sony because of third-party support, but it does understate the usefulness of the EF to RF adapter. A number of old EF lenses actually have *improved* autofocus performance when adapted, so you can take your time when upgrading to the new stuff. Older, difficult lenses like the 85 f/1.2 and 50 f/1.0 suddenly become more practical. You also have access to a bunch of specialty lenses that you couldn't otherwise, like the cinema lenses, the biggest big-whites, odd stuff like the MPE-65, and *seven* different tilt-shift options. And you've got the drop-in filters and a huge stable of inexpensive, third-party EF lenses, which also work great when adapted.

Nikon Z6 recording OMG 12 bit 4:2:2 ProResRAW, from full sensor this is ultimate feature!!!

Just bought the A7iii last week. Very solid camera for both photo and video.

This is great content even after 3 years. I am finally looking into upgrading and even shifting to a new system. I’ve been a Nikon user since film! And when the shift towards a dslr photo video combo came into being I decided to actually “downgrade”, choosing an entry level dslr (nikon d5300) and a few nikkor afs wide aperture lenses, selling the rest of my gears and never looked back. Until now. Looks like Nikon has improved a lot on the video side. But I am seriously considering Sony A series.

I bought the A7III only for the Zeiss 35mm. In Sony and Nikon systems, no small lenses. What a shame.

It's quite interesting (for me anyway), I preferred the Fujifilm X-H1 over the a7III, when it came out but the X-H1 tanked massively. I still don't regret getting the X-H1, over the a7III or the Nikon Z6/Z7, which were released a few month later and I still don't rate particularly highly because I don't particularly like the ergonomics. Overall, though I still haven't found a reason to buy a Nikon mirrorless body and my 8 year old, D800 does more than a good enough job, when it comes to photography.
