For me, and a lot of other people, there is no choice. I already have a lot of lenses and I am not going to sell them because an other camera is released from an other brand. I think the same is true for most of the Canon and Fuji shooters. Even when I would not have a camera right now then the limited amount of Lumix lenses would still drive me toward Sony. Every few months there is a camera brand that is releasing a new camera. Every time the specifications are slightly better then the previous generation. However the lenses stay the same and your collection of lenses is usually much more expensive then the body.
Hey Terry! Dope, fair and objective perspectives on these cameras, as usual.. I constantly hear in 95% of cases the opinion "For video go with the S5ii(iiX) but for photos go with the A7iv". I'm genuinely curious, in terms of photography , outside of resolution and mechanical burst speed what does the the Sony do (or does better) that the Lumix can't? And vice-versa? With you being a still photographer as well I think that would be a perfect (final) video in this series for you tie it all up completely. 'Sony a7iv VS Lumix S5ii(iiX)' For Photographers'.. No one's done that one yet so it should blow up quick as well as being just as helpful as your video features comparisons. I'd bet users and general fans would find value in knowing what photography features/strengths are on both sides of the fence comparatively. Please hook that up!!
I personally own the A7iv and decided to get the Lumix S5iix for work. On my own time I mainly shoot photos but love having all the video capabilities for the occasional project so the Sony is perfect for me. At work, we wanted a hybrid camera that was more focused on video yet had photo capabilities. I love both, but when it comes to video it's Lumix all day. Photos I take out out of my A7iv are definitely better though and the autofocus on the Sony has never failed me. If Lumix had a higher megapixel count (I shoot landscape & portrait photography) and slightly more reliable autofocus, I think I would have went with the Lumix for a personal camera too. When I bought my Sony A7iv, the Lumix S5iix wasn't out yet so my decision was very easy to make at the time and I won't switch now because I love my Sony lenses. Both are great cameras and I would recommend them to all hybrid shooters but if you're on the fence right now, I would go with Sony if you focus more on photos and Lumix if you focus more on video.
@gordon1840 I’m new to this dilemma. Currently a7iv is around 2100 euro and s5iix is for 2500. I wanna do both video and photos. I wanna make YT videos, cinematic style for my hobby (not a video professional). I am super confused between these two. Can you suggest?
@@sowhat4223 this is a really good point that nobody ever brings up. If you’re trying to do professional work and your hand starts to cramp every time you pick up the Sony you’re not gonna want to use it anymore.
I agree with you. The colors and skin tone on the Lumix S5 are really good. I want to upgrade to the Lumix S5II due to better autofocus on the condition that Panasonic did not tamper with the colors because as the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
For what its worth, It is possible to lock all the dials on the original S5. I would think it would still be doable on the s5ii or s5iix. (On the original s5) In the menu, 2nd page (cog wheel), 3rd down (the little scroll wheel) in the Operation Lock Menu and you can choose what you want locked or unlocked when the operation lock is set to on. You can then set a custom/fn key to turn "operation lock" on and off on the fly to lock and unlock as needed. I find it very helpful to prevent me from bumping that dial. A physical lock would be great though, or the ability to specifically lock/unlock each dial with operation lock would be cool too. Hoping to pickup an s5ii soon!
Operation lock is a catch-all though. What we need is the ability to lock certain dials. Usually when I’m shooting video, I want everything operational except the shutter dial

I just wanted to let you know that i bought the Lumix DC-S5iix. the value simply could not be beat and it has the hi-res mode in camera, the stabilization in video is everything everyone promised. also the live view composite is soooooo so so fun to play with. the price of the first party lenses are also cheaper on Lumix than Sony. i am NOT regretting my Lumix choice at all. the blacked out design is just the icing on the cake. people stopped me multiple times already to ask what camera i was using lol
i wanted a sony but went with the s5iix because of the potential of working on ssd's depending on the project, and i got tired of smart conforming my footage for social media. And nobody gives away lens bundles outside of their kit lenses like Panasonic.
As much as I love the Lumix colors, still use my GH5ii sometimes, my A7iv just ticks too many boxes to switch systems. I'm still considering the A7Siii to complete my kit. Top Notch Content T Dub
When I had a Panasonic gh5 I was always shooting. I upgraded to the a7siii and find myself not shooting as much for some reason. When they say a camera has “character” that can make you want to shoot it’s definitely true.
I had both for the weekend. The a7IV kept overheating, which makes it impractical for video work. The footage from the s5iix was a lot more natural too. I felt like I could get all types of looks from the s5iix, whereas the Sony felt too clinical.
as a sony user for 3 years I too have this feeling that the colors of the Lumix are easier to color grade and are more natural. I am torn on on a decision to make my way to Panasonic Lumix since ive invested in sony lol
Glad to see Panasonic relevant again. I was rockin with the gh3, gh4, gh5, gh5s, but Sony's autofocus and lenses is hard to beat. A7siii and a7iv are my 1-2
This video is youtube gold in regards to clearly helping undecided people decide make an informed choice. First time i came across this channel and just had to sub and like. I have been struggling in making a decision between this 2 cameras and watching this helped me big time.
I feel like we're just a couple releases away from the perfect hybrid camera. I want worry-free autofocus which is why I'd go with Sony, but I also can't trust any camera that overheats (e.g. A7iv). The A7siii/FX3 seem like the answer, but 12MP is cutting it too close for photo cropping. That's where the S5ii wins, in addition to simple cinema features like shutter-angle, exposure tools. If Panasonic just perfects their autofocus and has un-cropped 4k60, it's unbeatable.
Fair compare 👌. I use the a7iv and s5ii (non-x) and i fully agree on the analysis. I must say that the a7iv does have the upper hand when it comes to autofocus. When it comes to reveal shots where you have objects exiting the frame in front of your main subject or actor (for transitions or what not) , the s5ii has difficulty to keep focus on the main subject. Similar scenarios where something gets in front of the face and it can lose eye-tracking pretty fast. You would have to tweak and switch autofocus fine tuning settings whereas the a7iv is more reliable.
I’ve gone for the S5iix and love the lenses. Especially the range of 1.8 primes which are all the same size and weight, making it perfect for gimble work. Can’t wait to get my hands on a S1Hii when it comes out!
It is interesting hearing how the SONY A7IV overheats. I have from the day it was released and shot so much video with it - including long concerts, theatres, conferences and it never came close to overheating.
Thank you for this! I'm still shooting on the Nikon D3500 that got me into the industry several years ago, and have been heavily considering upgrading to the Lumix. I love all the video features, but my only hangup was the 24MP sensor. However, since I'm probably a perfect 50/50 split on photos and video, and I love the creative features and ease of the Lumix, I think I'm leaning toward the S5IIX. If nothing else, the photos will be the same resolution as my Nikon (probably way better dynamic range if I had to guess), and the video will be phenomenal!
Genuinely curious,. When you say you're "too much of a photographer to choose the Panasonic" what do you mean? What are the things you think the A7iv can do (or does better) in terms of photography that the Lumix S5ii/S5iiX can't?
@@seanbrucemedia5695 I tend to do a lot more photography than video. I know I would prefer the 33mp sensor and faster mechanical shutter frame rate. Since I most photograph pets (professional pet photographer) I want the best possible AF for action. Note that I am heavily invested in Nikon, so unlikely to switch. If I did, I would probably get the Sony. BTW - I think I would do fine with the Panasonic as well. All the recent mirrorless cameras are very capable. I have voiced much frustration with Nikon for not have mirrorless cameras with adequate AF. That changed with the Z9 / Z8. I would have switched to Sony, but have a lot of Nikon glass. Now there is no need.

One of my sons recently got an A7iii and I've not yet had a chance to hold onto it and dig thru menus, to compare feature sets etc., so I guess I'll have to do that when I get a chance. I just always see that general opinion and was wondering if there is some material validity to it or personal preference/loyalty type statement. Continued success to you!
Lumix is a winner here! Sony is just becoming more and more canon like while Panasonic gives me early sony vibes when it was the underdog against Canon and Nikon back in mid 2010s. I'd take a perfect stabe with very good autofocus than a perfect auto focus with all over the place shakes, and yes Catalyst is just bad and unreliable slow app. As for lenses I think Panasonic covered all the essentials! Most people won't need all these 20+ lenses of Sony or third party. I think having more than 3 or 4 lenses is an overkill anyways. 24-70 2.8 Is covering almost 90% of all photography needs! other lenses are niche based ones.

@@martin_woodthe Panasonic felt like a cheap codec ? Did it look inferior? I always felt that way about the Sony avchd codecs. The ProRes & raw gotta be better man . I remember having the panny P2 cards that codec was like Fort Knox lol
Picked up an S5ii for $1449 new. What a steal. I've had the A7iv and the R6 and R6ii. These may have a slight edge for photography (very very slight) due to better AF but for overall hybrid use as well as better video features the S5 ii or S5 iix ftw.
Lumix user, and proud of it lol. I prefer the non-clinical look.. Just recently used the S5II for PHOTOS, for the first time... Happy w/ what I got. Recent video of it on my page.
I have both and I prefer the Sony photos, I like the first S5 a lot, but something is off with the S5II, pictures have too much magenta and skin tones are worse than on the S5. The AF on the Sony is also better but I bet Panasonic will improve it. IBIS is much better on the S5II, no comparison, even better than the first S5. About image quality, V-Log is easier to work than S-LOG, but standard profiles are better on the Sony, the S5II has too much bad in camera sharpening, and chroma noise reduction, videos look like upscaled from a lower resolution in 4K. My dream camera would be the S5 with the AF of the A7IV and the IBIS of the S5II.
I love the warm skin tone and colors on the Lumix S5. I don't know if I would upgrade to the Lumix S5II now since you stated that Panasonic tampered with the colors of the Lumix S5II and fucked it up.
Great video i am stuck between the two i have the ghy and gh5 i love them both. i primarily do video but want the photo features and the s52x seems to be my camera. but i do like the sony still undecided. I have used the sony and it is really reliable. undecided still!
I didn't know the s5iix has a fan. I know the GH6 has since I own it. That won't overheat at all, period. I can't use the sony for recording videos. I've had overheating issues with them in the past. Full frame cameras works well in low light. Its similar to the GH6 in terms of video modes. GH6 is mostly a video camera, although you can do photography with it too. I mainly shoot videos with these cameras anyways. Sony mirrorless cameras are awesome for stills, not so much for video because of the overheating issues. I never had the fx30 or the fx3.
I have both and I like both of them but I tend to lean towards the Lumix mostly because of the handling and menus, open gate recording and very important, the heat management. Sony wins in autofocus and lens selection. We are really lucky nowadays with all the options available
Just choosing between Sony a7iv, canon R6 M2 or Lumia s5/s1. Shooting slowly portraits, sometimes concerts/events so speed is nessesary. As well as video. For youtube
The lense selwction is no argument. Most sony third party lenses are lesser quality with lots of focus breathing and not parfocal either. Lumix gives you all lenses you will ever need and they are all very high quality wit less to no focus breathing plus they are parfocal often as well.
Just got the s5iix for the pro res 5.8k 30fps. I have the m.2 samsung and the small rig housing and cage. Cant wait to test it out. One thing I dont "and excuse me if im off base here, im not a pro videographer or photographer" but the samsung m.2 i have coming is 3000mb read and write. All the CFexpress type A cards I see are like 800mb and thats on the high side . Now i could be off base here but i think the s5ii and x usb port is usb 3.2 gen 2 which is 10 GBit/sec so in my mind right now that should blow away the CFexpress type A cards. Anyways not sure. I got the lumix for pro res recording capabilities. Nice video and cheers. p.s. to clarify I have the Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 2TB NVMe M.2 for anybody that was curious and have not tested with the s5iix just yet.next couple of weeks i will.
Can you do a review on the S5IIx vs. A7RV? I know it seems obvious, but as a previous S1H owner before changing to Sony, in terms of image quality I’ve always preferred the LUMIX. Basically looking to buy either one and I’m torn.
Personally I prefer the Sony A7iv, the autofocus is sooooo good and never fails you. The lumix can be frustrating sometimes if you are shooting on a gimbal and suddenly it goes out of focus….but it doesn’t mean it happens all the time. what made me buy the A7iv is that the menu is simple than the lumix. Most importantly You can’t imagine the great choice of lenses you get with the Sony, i have the sigma on my camera it it’s as good as a Sony G master lens but half price.
Thanks for this video, I think that overheating a camera in that price range is a construction error! Sorry for all the beautiful moments but I can't provide you with a video, and I don't know how long I can't film (do you happen to have a refrigerator?) And then everyone else comes. I did make a very nice video with my I phone. A contemporary graphics card also has cooling! I'd rather have a reliable camera with less choice of lenses than say with a red head this camera with the full rig turned itself off because the motherboard got too hot!
If you want a futur proof camera go for Sony. The lens selection itself is a huge point. Had the same debate, went for the A7IV and 0 regrets. Such a beast on every aspect, low light, high temp, sharpness, color science..
@@JamieMilkz The fact that they force users to upgrade body to have the newest functionalities is a mess but still, in our film company we are still working with a FS5 for corporate films.. Might not be the funniest brand to shoot with but it's definetly reliable in the long run
No one mentions how good the dial on the shutter button is on the LUMIX. It means not moving your finger when shooting. That said, I’m torn between both of these cameras. The Sony has MP, better AF, and ecosystem, but the LUMIX has everything else. The Sony also feels cheap af in the hand, and unintuitive. I can get either atm with a 24-105 f4, and 35mm 1.8 for around £3k, though the lumix would include a 50mm 1.8. Still finding it hard to decide.
Hi Terry, I have just discovered that the Panasonic doesn’t have a low-pass filter so it is easy to get moirè and it would be very frustrating. The Sony a7IV should be better with its filter. Please let us know if you have more information. Thanks

I am a victim too. Been using drops for the past few days now. I have an a7iv and the Lumix s5iix. The viewfinder on the Sony is terrible as it is too pixelated.
SOME OF MY CLIENTS TOLD ME ABOUT THIS. SO NOW I SHOOT WITH FOCUS AREA SET TO ZONE AND METERING MODE SET TO ENTIRE SCREEN AVERAGE. THOSE SETTING HELPED, ESPECIALLY FOR VIDEOS. THANKS A LOT FOR REPLYING..
I hate to resurrect this video, but I have a question. I current shoot on the Canon EOS R, but the recording limit, 4k crop, hit-or-miss AF, plus no 3rd party lenses makes me tempted to move to a new platform. At the moment i am *possibly* going to trade in my gear to mpb for a r6 mak II. Would a Lumix S5 IIx be a better camera for product/edc photo and video for RU-vid and IG?
Yeah. First you always ask yourself what lenses do you use/need. THEN you decide on the body. And yeah Pana has abysmal lenses still, and it will not change so fast.
I just did a damn full spectrum conversion on my a7iv, but now i'm thinking about switching to Lumix to be honest... i wonder if I could get a slightly higher price for my a7iv since it is full spectrum now, and that usually costs around $500 at at least.
Just bought the s7 IV and It was a tuff choice between these two, but for anyone who wants to stay in the game longer, go for the Sony, because you can move on to better cameras and have the same lenses, but LUMIX has just the s5 ii and gh series, so you can’t move forward/get better camera.
I use them both. It’s not that hard to get them to match if you care about them matching. I personally don’t worry about it. The only person that ever notices is me

But Panasonic is giving me 50% off and I can get the s5ii X for 1300 US. What would you do in my situation? Get the s5iix and and LUMIX lens? Or just invest on another Sony full frame camera ? What you talking about aha, did you even try to turn the heat option on high ? Auto ISO ? AF MEH ? Maybe try learning your gear before swapping for a new body man
When you say "overheating", do you mean just a warning icon, or the camera actually turning off? I thought only Canon did that, haha. I would like it though if people didn't omit the fact that Catalyst Browse has some quite significant limitations unless you pay for Catalyst Prepare, and that it changes colours / video quality (not for the better). Anyway, I think I agree with your assessment. But cameras can be such personal tools, it's hard to recommend one to someone without them trying it out. For many people the hands on experience with the camera (holding it, menus, etc.) triumphs megapixels or the number of codecs.
