How to get a great shot of a wild living lemur in the dark rain forest of madagascar.
I was discovering the incredible wildlife of the primary rain forest of madagascar with my new gear: the sony a7r4 and sel200-600mm telephoto lens last week. After staying in the untouched rain forest of masoala I was able to photograph and film several species of lemurs, mouse lemurs, chameleons and many other animals in their natural environment. The 200-600 really delivered great results, although the lighting conditions were really bad and I had to deal with noise issues due to high iso shooting.

Thank you, is the video too dark in general or just a jew scenes? Maybe you can tell we the time it is too dark. I am not 100% sure if my monitor shows proper colours and lighting, maybe I have to do some adjustments. (I will have another look on the video on other computer)

Pitou, you have to work with the light given and that combination of heavy clouds cover, rain and thick canopy gives deep shadows and poor light to work with. That combined with working at very high ISO reduces dynamic range.

Wieder ein klasse Video. Auch die Musik passt zum Schnitt...... oder umgedreht. Macht Lust nach Madagaskar zu reisen. Was muss man am Tag für einen Guide rechnen? Nutzt Du die Insta 360, oder war das eine andere cam?

Vielen Dank! In Masoal haben wir inkl. Übernachtung, Transfer, Guide und Verpflegung ca. 100 Euro pro Person/Nacht gezahlt. In besser erreichbaren Nationalparkt hat der Guide für nen halben Tag zwischen 10 und 25 Euro gekostet.Ich hatte meine GoPro Fusion für 360 Aufnahmen dabei (ziemlich identisch zur insta360)

Amazing resolution with the Sony7riv but personally i do my wildlife photography with the A9 now A9ii better low light and faster autofocus and frame rate. Great footage though, must be a massive file size?

Now, that I have used that camera a couple of month, in most situation the a9 would probably have performed better (actually in every lowlight situation). I shoot RAW+.jpg which is 125MB+30MB, yeah really a point, but now i use two 256GB sd cards, and it's ok, but it's really killing my storage and edition software when I try to edit a timelapse which consists of 61MP frames:D

Da sieht dort ja abenteuerlich aus! Sind jetzt die schlimmsten Befürchtungen eingetreten, oder waren die Schlangen im Dschungel gefährlicher? ;-) Mit 900 mm im Crop-Modus hast Du eine ganz schöne Brennweite. Im Video dürfte man das Rauschen bzw. diesen Grain, wenn der ISO nicht zu hoch ist, mit einem Rauschunterdrückungs-Tool herausbekommen.

Unser Guide hat behauptet, die einzigen gifitgen Tiere in Masoala seien Skorpione und Spinnen die unter der Erde leben. Naja, so richtig geglaubt habe ich ihm nicht, aber hat alle Touren ohne Probleme mit FlipFlops geführt...:D Haben eine Riesenschlange gesehen, die war leider weg bevor ich n gutes Bild hatte. Das mit dem Rauschen ist so ne Sache, gibts da auch konstenlose Tools? Mit Lightroom kann man zumindest in den Fotos n bisschen was raus holen, wobei dabei auch Details auf der Strecke bleiben (das sollte im Video ähnlich sein, oder?).

@@anotherperspective3076 Befürchte, dahingehend gibt es nichts kostenloses. Ich habe das neulich mit dem Rauschunterdrückungs-Tool im Resolve mit einer ziemlich verrauschten Slow-Motion-Aufnahme ausprobiert und die danach sogar in 4K exportiert. Das hat einwandfrei funktioniert. Unbrauchbar wird es, wenn schon bei der Aufnahme im Video zu viele Details verloren gegangen sind. Aber das dürfte bei deiner Voll-Format-Kamera nicht so leicht bei erhöhten ISO-Werten der Fall sein. Den Blausaum bekommst Du auch im Bildbearbeitungsprogramm bei den Fotos entfernt. Für Video gibt es auch so ein Tool im Resolve, wahrscheinlich auch in anderen Schnittprogrammen.

@@claudinchenchen Welche Tools hast du ausprobiert? Evtl. gibts ja ne zeitlich begrenzte Testversion, bevor ich da jetzt Geld rein stecke und am Ende enttäuscht bin

@@anotherperspective3076 Ich habe mir die Studio Version vom DaVinci Resolve besorgt, die so ein Tool beinhaltet. Bei der Freien Version ist das Rauschunterdrückungs-Tool leider nicht dabei. Es gibt noch das Neat Video, auch als Plugin. Ist dann zwar das Wasserzeichen bei der Testversion drin, aber man kann probieren, ob es einem liegt oder nicht. Das habe ich einmal im Magix ausprobiert, war dann aber nicht so sehr davon überzeugt, um es zu kaufen. Man muss halt ein wenig herumprobieren. Auf RU-vid zeigen einige dieses Tool. Kann man sich ja mal ansehen und ausprobieren. Mit welcher Software schneidest Du, Premiere?

@@claudinchenchen Vielen Dank für deine Tipps. Neat Video werde ich mir auf jedenfall mal genauer anschauen. Ja genau, ich mache eigentlich alles mit Premiere und Lightroom. Um mich so richtig mit Photoshop auseinander zu setzen fehlte mir irgendwie immer die Zeit und Lust;)

Excellent post, footage, stills, and candid explanation of technical and logistical challenges! Appreciate your take on gear limitations and how to manage them. Did you do much homework to study the animal behavior? Lemurs eating fruit my fav part of post. (Opening and closing segments with you speaking directly to viewers was a bit dimly lit and sound had a trace of echo - just saying, guy.)

Thank you! Well, I did not have to do a lot of "homework", because our guides told us a lot of interesting stories;) Yeah, I can improve that sound, the wall of the room I did the records are still quite blank, thank you for your feedback! I hope that video was not too long?

I had exactly the same problems with my A7RIV and 100-400mm 4 weeks ago while photographing macaques in Sulawesi and the Red Bird of Paradise in Papua. Thankfully not as much rain but very high humidity and thick clouds made for really poor light and being pushed into ISO 6400+. I struggled to find an auto focus method that would work and resorted to manual a few times. I also resorted to using an 85mm 1.8mm to get more light.

There is a video called "Sony a7R IV vs a9 Birds in Flight Autofocus Comparison" which shows really impressive autofocus of the a7r4 with settings explained. Maybe for me it did not work that well because the light was not bright enough.

Thank you, all shots were taken handheld. Because of long hiking tours at high temperatures, I decided to leave my tripod at home;)

Man the weakness of the small aperture of the lens is really showing here in low light despite the body trying really hard to keep up. Lacks sharpness etc etc. Only place this lens combo is useful might be on a game drive in Africa where there is sufficient light.

True... but since I use topaz denoise for post production, my images look much better, I had rework all of my rainforest images, thts not a great solution, but it works;)

What about weatherproof of the Camera and the Lens?

I always used some Kind of rain coat to Project The lens and camera. I reat that Sony improved The weather sealing, "but" it is neither weather nor water proof. Although it was very humid and rained a lot my gear is still in perfekt condition;)

When you are able to shoot at short distance its great but I still keep deleting most of my images using this lens;) But I must say, that using topaz denoise forpost production really doubles the qulality (especially when shooting at iso 640-2000). Without post prodution the quality is pretty average
