This is the Real World Review of the Sony a7R IV. It doesn't get any more Real World than this. I was invited on the road as a photojournalist to capture what it's like on the campaign trail. As I say in the video, this is not a political post. If invited, I would go on the road with anyone to do my job as a photographer and capture the true story.
Does this NEW Sony a7R IV replace the a7R III? Can the Nikon Z7 or Canon EOS R hold a candle to this Mirrorless body? This Real World Review will help you answer those questions.

Afaik raw files are always compressed, else they would be larger. But that’s for sure a lossless compression. Now I’m not sure about the ‘Compressed raw’ file and to which extend that is lossy or not.

61Mpix 14bit would translate into an uncompressed raw file of 61*3*14/8*(1000^2/1024^2) =305MiB Edit (2019.12.20): THAT WAS WRONG! Although the individual sensels (sensor elements) on a bayer sensor only capture one color, (red, green or blue) they later get the other color information through a complex interpolation algorithm from the surrounding sensels and by that process they become pixels (picture elements). In the raw file the information of the individual sensels is stored. So the multiplication by 3 is wrong. Here is the right calculation: (9504 x 6336) * 14 / 8 * / 1024^2 =100.5MiB raw sensor data only. On top of that comes exif data, several embedded JPEG previews (and Sony knows what more) the consequence of this way the bayer sensor works, the minimal amount of pixels on an APS-C or FullFrame sensor would be 24, since it has to be 3:2 and it has to consist of blocks of two Green, one Red and one Blue sensels, so 3horizontal*2vertical*4sensels=24 sensels. If you were to bake it 2*3 sensels only, either Red or Blue would get only one sensel, the other 2 and green 3.

@Frank Olsen you're trying to make Bernie opponents look uneducated or does that come to you naturally? 61.2Mpix * 14 bits per pixel / 8 bits in a byte / 1024^2 bytes to Mebibyte = 102.13MiB add to that metadata, 2 or more jpeg versions of the same photo, inefficiencies of storing the 14 bits as 16 bits and then compressing, and you easily end up with 123MB file

Again, Jared is one of the few camera reviewers that actually take us out into the field on a real professional shoot, instead of just repeating specs and opinions in a studio. He shows in real time, how important the focus capabilities of this camera are and why he chose it for this shoot. Can a photojournalist get these types of photos without an A7R4? I don't know, I don't have the experience to say. However, Jared uses the camera to the max of its capabilities, and he hasn't even had it that long. Give him a year and see what he can do. Ergonomically, Sony cameras just suck. But only a couple of cameras today, even after 100 years of development, don't suck. Amazing to me. Jared puts up with the sore fingers and cramped hands because the technical capabilities of the camera allow him to get shots that he could not have gotten otherwise, so he puts up with it. Even though the Canons/Nikons/Pana S1 are much better ergonomically, I wonder if Jared would have gotten the same quality of photos with these other systems given their capabilities vs the Sony. I doubt it. For this style of shooting, the real time autofocus capability trumps everything else. And the rest of the system keeps up with it. So, you do what you have to do to get the shot and Jared did.

I love your eye, this and those concert shots and obviously many more of your shots is you at your best my friend. This is that Fro guy that we all love. Thanks for the explanation for the lock on focus and why it was so important to you. Some came to hear about the camera, but most stayed for stayed for the photos. You made both highly enjoyable and entertaining. Jared this is the type of stuff and your raw talent that separates you from the rest and even your detractors can’t deny you that. Keep this type of stuff going and take us all on this journey of yours, best of luck man for both you and your crew, Steven did well in your absence. DangerMan V No Dangerman, I was was watching the right video and I agree overall that it was both. The way that Jared presented this with him at work and not only using the equipment, but talking about the problems and coming up with solutions was the key. Jared made the case for the autofocus features. The issue has become with RU-vid is that their are more people trying to sell you something subliminally without every backing it up with work. The presentation and the end result worked hand in hand and not the other way around like in other people doing videos. Jared is a very talented guy and he is at his best when he controls the narrative and joins both the gear and his talent instead of like others only talking about the gear with no talent to back it up. Thank you Dangerman for bringing this to my attention.

That's exactly what Jared Polin does (along with accentuate random vowels and occasionally act like a 9 year old off his ADD meds). Rather than shoot the same 8 subjects in the same studio year after year to show you which camera is technically superior (which you could know anyway by just looking at the spec sheet), he takes them out and uses them, a lot. Like, a lot. And then gives reviews based on how they function for a given mission.

@@TheForge10 Jared said himself he would have missed many shots with a Nikon camera. Not only you need to focus perfectly to get the shot, this must also be done very fast as things are just happening that you can't control and certainly can't ask people to stop for a pose, and the only time during the whole shooting that he got someone to pose, he only had 6 seconds to get the shots. That's why your wife with an A7r4 will have more chance of getting great photos than you with the D4.

I watched this video amongst many others to help make my decision about what camera to get. I read review, after review, but I have to admit this video was the one that helped me make my decision the most. I went from a 2010 Olympus E-PL1 to the Sony a7R IV, and it was one of the best decisions regarding my personal photography I've made. This camera doesn't even feel like a camera it works so well it does not get in my way it literally just feels like an extension of my creative self when I'm trying to capture images or make video. It is more than a camera it is a tool and this tool makes everything so much easier. Thank you Jared Polin!

Jared, being a long time Sony shooter, I've found that one thing to keep in mind regarding the Sony focusing system is that it only focuses on vertical lines. So if you focused on the back of Bernie's coat, it may not have found distinct vertical lines on which to focus. This is graphically illustrated when you go into manual focus with focus peaking. Only vertical or near vertical lines will light up. Just something to keep in mind.

Jared is consistently relevant to other photographers. This video is an excellent example. I shoot with a D850. When I listen to Jared talk about a new camera I’m able to think about how camera capabilities relate to what I’m using currently. I get to understand in better detail what my particular technical challenges are by seeing how they are met with other equipment. It’s also wonderful to feel like I’m having a discussion in the context of general photographic principles. On top of that Jared is just plain fun and says a lot in between the lines. In a market where too many photographers are forced into making RU-vids when they might otherwise be taking pictures, Jared demonstrates a unique and engaging talent.

Curious as to what the advantages are to shooting 61MP files for photojournalism other than cropping in post if using wider focal lengths or looser framing. And yes; cropping in post is legit when shooting with smaller, lighter prime lenses (two bodies, two focal lengths) for photojournalism in the field. Lower MP sensor theoretically performs better in low light (at least less signal gain noise), due to the lower photo registry site density, and the smaller file size means faster shoot rate and more buffer. The a7R IV is great for a lot of things, it just doesn't seem like the ideal tool for photojournalism or sports photography.

Fro always seems to use a single body at a time and switch out lenses. As a news photographer I’ve always had a much better go of it by carrying a body with a wide prime/zoom and another body with say 70-200. Super-fast lifting either one needed. Fro is a photojournalist first and foremost, I think, so I’m surprised he doesn’t like to do the same. But, different strokes. He gets excellent results.

Color Science Note: When shooting RAW files, the color is determined by the RAW processing software. So, when comparing the color between Nikon and Sony raw files, you are really comparing how the raw processor you are using interprets the files. All RAW processing software interprets the files differently. I compared Lightroom to Capture One a while back and now use Capture One. The files are cleaner, while still showing more detail, and the color is fantastic. Of course, this is subjective, but I like the look of my C1 files. And oh yeah, the software is fast! So, maybe the next step is to compare the a7RIV files using Lightroom and Capture One?!

If you can't make a Sony look like a Fuji, a Nikon look like a Leica or a Canon look like an Olympus in terms of color via editing, then its not the camera's fault, it's your lack of editing skills. Again: Color science is a meaningless marketing buzzword to anyone who shoots raw and knows how to post process.

You obviously didn't realise the new Nikon has built in "Ladder" or "Periscope mode", it's very clever it uses any air space (of your choice) as a mirror so you can have an aerial view of virtually any subject whilst keeping both feet firmly planted on terra firma. You can also use this mode for shooting around corners or for photographing the rear view of a subject.

Thanks Jared, this is the way to do a review of camera equipment. Thanks for taking the time to show your work with the camera. Loved the story around a campaign. I have the A7R III and with the updated firmware it has the same real time eye AF tracking, but no real time object tracking. It’s close enough to make that easy not to upgrade. Also I don’t have deal with the even more massive files. I definitely think the A9 II is something to get as a fast camera. One way to mitigate wide focus eye AF not getting your target, is to use back button AF. Set that as eye AF, pressing it uses wide AF eye tracking. Keep the default AF as spot focus. So You can use it in a crowd to nail down the desired eye by putting the spot on the face and then eye af takes over. If the subject is not complicated, then you use the AF on button that is set to eye AF, which uses wide AF eye tracking. Hope this makes sense.

@njrtech
@njrtech 5 лет назад
A well known wildlife photographer has throughly tested the A7RIV for birds in flight (very demanding) and said the camera is easily 90 percent of the original A9 in AF ability. That's plenty good enough for even demanding situations...and id rather have more than double the resolution, better ergonomics, better EVF and finally a red focus point . By the way, A9ii still is at 24mpx. I feel Sony will release another A9 sooner because so many are disappointed with the fact the same sensor used (although with faster processing pipeline)
@MF.Productions
@MF.Productions 5 лет назад
@@njrtech sure, you have many good points although you need to also take in the extra cost, more processing, more storage for something the a9 can already do in plenty for what I need the camera for.... and that is just the point here. We all need cameras for different reasons and if you are a wildlife/landscape photographer then you will Pony up the cost. I am a people photographer and need fast focusing, smaller RAW's and the focus points need to cover almost the whole sensor. What was missing for me was what now came with the Firmware update on the a9. Ergonomics are fine but in my Studio I use the battery grip and that eliminates just about all ergonomics issues anyhow. So that said I would have to lay out for not only the a7riv but also storage (SD cards and SSD's) and the new handgrip.... thinking of handling 120 plus MB of files in Adobe makes me also think that I may have to update the computer as well. You see, it's the a9 for me (plus I have the a7riii which is not really being used anymore). Hope that helps.

It baffles me nobody has yet found the auto focus problems more precisely the focus breathing and constant jumps specially on very up close macro shots and specially in video mode, similar to what is still happening with the a6400 and even using sony glass like the 50mm macro or even the 90mm macro. When I use the same glass on my a6500 or a7III I can get perfect macro moving or panning shots and the focus is worthy of being called phase detect, when I try the same shots on my a6400 or my a7R4, it's horrible, it almost looks like it's again a contrast detect camera again. And no matter the AF setting, fast focus, slow focus, responsive, standard, it's horrible in up close macro shots, simply horrible. I'm so disappointed with the newest sony cameras in that department, and I wished a camera reviewer like yourself would reproduce those problems and expose them, because sony isn't even listening to the less known professionals anymore.

Touching on what the other guy said, if you're someone who isn't taking photos professionally, purely for the lighter weight alone you're better off with APS-C. I really didn't think weight would be an issue for me when I got into photography and stepped up to full frame, but it's really not fun wanting to just walk around, take your time and look for creative shots when your shoulders and neck are aching. So really, don't underestimate just how much more enjoyable photography is when you're moving around with a lighter load.
