It isn't magical (neither is the 24-70/2.8 GM II), but the power of Sony's a7R V ESPECIALLY with the 24-70GM II is undeniable. Buy it here: geni.us/X8VLQbI (NB: Sony paid for hotel accommodations in NYC during launch; I had an eval camera in hand for a total of about 3 hours)

The problem with camera people is: 1) They buy the best they can afford. 2) They are happy with it. 3) Sony comes out with newer features for newer cameras. 4) Current customers then get jealous 5) Current customers then think Sony should backport the new features into their purchased cameras that they are once happy with for about 5 days. They reason this because they spent a lot of money. There was no agreement. 6) The customers end up buying the newest camera. If they want to avoid this addictive jealous behavior, they should vow to not buy a new camera for 6 years after purchase, and stop looking at the new ones until 6 years is over.

Great video! When you put Tamron 28-75 G2 side-by-side with the Sony 24-70 GM II, the color difference is huge. I was originally thinking about A7M4, but finally decide to go for the A7R5. It just arrived at my door 5 minutes ago.

As always, great video!! As a pro-Architectural Photographer, the A7Rv will be ordered soon (the camera will go on the books for 2023). I'll be curious about the differences between using Full-size raw files VS Med and Small Raw files (now an option on newer Sony cameras). When I was a Canon shooter with the 5Ds, for my formal Architectural work I would use the full sensor. For "run-of-the-mill work" I could switch to Med Raw and basically have a 5Diii (at the time) with unnoticeable quality loss. Modern computers handle large files so much faster than when I had the 5Ds, I'm not certain if I would notice any big difference in computer editing speed between the A7Rv and my current A7Riii. We will see :)

I thought about buying the A7R5. But, decided that adding a second A7R4 to my kit for half the money would be more useful for me. My main lenses are the 24-70mm GM II and the 70-200mm GM II. I'm sure I'll upgrade to the A7R5 eventually. But, I'm happy shooting with what I have now.

Hello, Hugh. I've always enjoyed your videos. Just want to ask you to add "large text captions" to side-by-side image comparisons, so that viewers can QUICKLY discern which lens is which. For example, it is "Sony" on the left, and "Tamron" on the right. For same-brand lens comparison, the large caption can read: Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM II on the left, and Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM on the right. Thanks. 11-23-2022

The card slots being combo SD/CFE, one of them has to be facing backwards, since the contact points are different and thus have to be separated. Most people only use one system and will be used to it being this way. I never once had an attempt to insert an SD card facing forward, not even in my first days or weeks of owning a Sony.

I’ve just traded all my Nikon F mount glass and D810 off on a A7RV along with the 24-70GMii and 70-200ii. I hope I haven’t been lead astray by all the marketing hype, but I’m excited by the speed and clarity I’ve seen even with an Riv. I’m waiting to expand my lens acquisitions until I have my RV in hand. Should I be worried about performance of lower price point lenses with the sensor quality of the RV? I will need some wider and longer glass eventually.

You may miss the tactile qualities of the ‘810; you may hate the menus. But once you dial it in, you will be gobsmacked. You WILL want the very best primes like the 24/1.4 GM to go with it.

The feature that caught my attention was the new auto white balance and metering. Ive always used AWB and AISO in manual mode on my Nikon DSLR successfully. This is probably the first time I'm actually considering an a7r, just because of how good it actually is in all these different styles of photography. I mean, I considered, but not seriously. I'd use primarily for astrophotography in my case, but I'm still in the fence about pixel shift technology. I always wondered if I could use mounted on a telescope with a tracker to be able to get even more detail out of the exposure, but I think it's limited to a few seconds. That being said, I don't really consider the menus on the system to be terrible, of course, it's something very subjective sometimes, but with the amount of options, configurations and settings, I dare anyone to do a better job. I always got lost on Nikon for example, but, like really lost. I'm not saying it's perfect by any means, but it's not that bad either. Holding that thought, I'd like to add this: how many of us can actually think about getting the shot at the same time we're thinking about settings? For me, it has become so natural to be prepared in certain situations, that I don't think, I just feel. And settings become almost a secondary non important thing, because I'm wired to get those things right in the first place. Just an idea, maybe is just me. But I don't think so. Thanks for the video.

I ordered the exact same body and lens combination you did, on the day it was released. I have the glass. Still waiting on the camera. I drove down to KEH in Atlanta and sold every piece of Fuji gear I had..... Sad day. But after shooting with my Leica Q2M, I was a convert to the full frame, high MPX world. I have been waiting, with baited breath, for the A7RV to be announced. Since I really can't afford a Leica M + glass nor an SL-2 + glass, this will do nicely. Although, if they announce a Q3 with a 50mm lens, I just may be forced to sell my Q2M (hold that thought). I must admit, I fell out of the chair when you said you sold the CL. Of course with the M-11, the CL is redundant as a smaller body, but as much as you have waxed on about that camera, I figured it was never leaving. I am really looking forward to a proper review, and even more so, looking forward to getting mine in hand, and heading out to Smoky Mountain National Park. Cheers!

After two happy years with an A7iii it was the Leica Q2 that made me start lusting for a new camera. Oh, how I would love a Q2, but it’s a lot of money and really is a second camera, particularly for someone who was not a real 28 mm fan. Then I moved on to thinking of the A7iv as the next step but there were a few things,I didn’t like about it. In particular that screen. I never take video, and it seemed a screen made for video users to me. Then came along the Rv. At first, the 61 megapixels worried me but I bought it on the basis of all the other features, particularly the low light performance, new screen and EVF. I love it. Now I’m using it I really rate the 61 megapixels! Not because I need the resolution, but the capacity to crop is extraordinary. With the exception of a 70 - 200 zoom, I have all primes and this ‘crop ability is amazing. As always thank you for your extraordinary reviews.

Huge, love your work! I recently bought the A7rv with a new grip and found that the grip did not fit and later found out that that is an issue with the current grip sold and said to fit as per the Sony Corporate, but I can tell you that after taking it back to Precision Camera in Austin Texas I was told that I was among numerous a7rv owners advising that the battery grip fitment was off. I had a gap that I was able to see through. Was wondering if you had the same issue if and when you tried a battery grip with your camera. There is a big thread on DP Review regarding this issue. Hope it gets fixed soon and maybe you could contact some of your Sony rep's and see what's up with this issue. Keep up the good work. Thank You

Today I've been out in the Brecon Beacons (UK) photographing waterfalls after the constant storm yesterday dumped huge amounts of water. I was using my A7R IV and the Sony 24-105 f4 G. I took maybe 16 images. An initial review suggests that with a little work I've got at least three keepers. What is making the difference is that big sensor. One image that is sort of OK near the full frame works far better when heavily cropped. I'm not sure I'd use all the increased performance of the V. If one doesn't have an IV already then the V if one can run to the expense is a bit of a no brainer. I'm not a Sony fan. I love Fuji kit, which is my day to day carry. In the end, what is going to get the job done really well?

I hope that lumix s2r has this chip or at least faster autofocus. That said I must also say for portraits in studio, landscapes the s1r is a highly underrated camera.

You wrote that the a7RIV autofocus isn’t adequate for your needs. Could you shed light? I thought that camera had superb af.

Both Claudia and I found that for rapid street work (people in particular) the AF just fell short. We were both shocked, actually. We both shifted to a1’s and all AF issues disappeared. Not an issue for landscape nor general purpose photography like travel or family. Of course, we could have some-focused, but that is antithetical to using this kind of camera with fast glass in the first place.

Hue.. please avail me of your best advice for selling or trading my current reasonably low shutter count Sony a7RIV in excellent condition for a new Sony a7RV. KEH? BMH? For all the reasons you have highlighted in this video, you have validated all my use cases to upgrade to the a7RV .. so what say you? Many thanks for the great videos you produce ! .. your humble subscriber ..

Hey, Mark! Both are very reputable. I use KEH myself when I’m dropping a pile of gear in one go; I buy from them too. For expensive individual items I’m thinking of selling, I always do my homework: I get quotes from multiple sources (NB: I have affiliate relationships with both of them - Adorama too, also good). Beyond that, KEH is also a sponsor - and right now through November 28th, you can get 10% bonus using using the code TBM10A.

With the right lens, it does things the Q2 cannot, but this may or may not matter to you given the things the Q2 does exceptionally well.

Just checked Japan's Yodobashi (their No.1 camera store) and 8 of the top ten best selling cameras are Sony. I must say Nikon seems to be falling further behind when I look at what this camera can do. With the exception of the Z9, they have nothing thats really competitive.

I’m struggling whether to give up my A7RIV for an A7RV, or an A1, or just keep it. You’ve almost convinced me to spend the $2000+ difference it would cost me.

What can’t you do with the ‘IV that you need or want to do with the ‘V or ‘1?
@davidligon6088

@@3BMEP Good question. Since they are different cameras let’s start with the A1. Bird Eye AF and faster shutter speed when I’m at the lake, lagoon, or ocean capturing our feathered friends. A7RV does not provide the faster shutter speed, but has focus depth bracketing for those cactus-flower-to-mountain range sharp images, and it has better stabilization for my shaky hands. I’m skeptical whether the advanced A7RV Pixel Shift Multi Shot will work with even a slight breeze in the leaves as claimed. And finally they both offer Lossless Compressed RAW which, for the life of me, I don’t know why Sony did not include in the A7RIV. In summary, they offer nothing I could not do with the A7RIV, I could just do it better. $2000+$4000 better, I’m not sure.

Honestly. If you have iv…. Do you really need rv. The benefit is little. Less the more obvious screen different. Guys… you all dont have to upgrade or change just because 1 more version is out. But i guess too many people just like to have the latest. And that’s exactly why brands are releasing newer model quicker and quicker. It is usually and always better to wait and upgrade after afew version/gen. You dont have to do it every time… unless you get back the money in 1 or 2 shoot or unless you’re just dang rich. Lol

Have had a pre-order in and sold my A7RIV & A7IV so it’s cost neutral but also have debated it since I also own an Alpha 1 and not 100% sure I needed both. Do really like the improvements and the idea of it though. I plan to mate it up with my excellent GM primes an GM II zooms that I already have. Would be interested though to learn about how you think the Z7II and Z 24-70/2.8 S compare though since I own one but use it on a Z9. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

4700 euros here in Finland...maybe it is time to raid the piggy. Or maybe I just stick to my guns for now as glass upgrades would be inevitable, thus raising the cost significantly. Agree wholly with you Hugh on the design and menu system of these cameras...there is a lot of room for improvement there to make shooting with these more a joy than it is right now. But, as always, it was the glass that got me to Sony camp and brands like Canon just cannot compete. They should really open their designs to other lens manufacturers,.. what's there to lose?

Thats nasty… 4700 euros is madness. The cheapest A7rv is in Taiwan. Check it out and i’ll bet you will be laughing and crying. Its only about 3400 euros.. The Sony image - seen as a data stream - is without peer. The signal/ noise ratio, the dynamic range - all incredible. The Sony image - seen as a photograph - remains eternally disappointing. Their color science, their skin tones - require hours of photoshop time to make human skin look like human skin. I would say they need to reach out to Fuji or Nikon for help. The Sony camera user interface remains bizarre. It’s dysfunctionality appears to be a point of bizarre pride for Sony engineers.

Ugly camera, worse in video than Panasonic S5IIx, worse in stills than M11. I suppose if you want a crappy camera that gets acceptable results, the new Sony is ok. I am still waiting for the SL 3 though :)

As someone who owns an a7R V, an M11 and an SL2, I can tell you that the a7R V is an exceptionally good stills camera. I do prefer the S5 II as a video camera; and I much prefer the build, ergos and menu system of my Leicas. But the autofocus of the a7R V is peerless and its lens ecosystem is unmatched across a wide array of price, performance, size and weight combinations.

@@3BMEP I o]rdered the A7RV have sold my A7RIV yesterday. I have a Sony A1 which I love but I wonder once I give this A7RV a good work out if I keep the A1 or possibly sell it for a second A7RV. The A1 is way more than I need in the frames per second department and I really love the A7RIV's 61 Mpix files. Hugh, thanks for your thoughts on this camera. Oh and I've been shooting with the Sony 24-70 GM II and absolutely love the images it produces. My main landscape kit will now be the A7RV with 12-24 f/2.8 GM, 24-70f/2.8 GM II, and 70-200 f/2.8 GM II. keep up the great videos and Happy Thanksgiving!
