Preordered the day they were available. Wasn't sure until I tried out a demo with a Sony rep. After that I sold my A7rii kit and took a big hit :-). Who cares, the 30th can't come soon enough!
@Justin Candler: yeah, the lenses are big, but people (including me) want same or better performance than their old dslr and unfortunately Sony can't defy physics with the lenses. But with Sony we at least have the option to throw on a small prime like the 55 f/1.8 for a light setup. Or you can go with lighter f/4 zooms.
I bought A7Rii 3 months ago as it was nearly 1.5k cheaper than A7Riii in Australia. All I can say, A7Rii has some obvious flaws but the image quality you get out of it is pretty amazing!
I bought the Sony A7RII a little before the Sony A7RIII came out even though I knew that the Sony A7RIII might be on its way, but I was offered the Sony A7RII for a good price, and I thought it still was a good camera and that the price suited me better! I'm not professional so the two SD cards do not mean much to me, and I'm also fine with the slightly worse autofocus for my kind of photography, and I'm also using a battery grip so the battery life is also ok for me. I'm still happy with my Sony A7RII, and have not regretted my purchase! Many greetings from Denmark
My a99 has 2 sd cards and once I got both of them to work simultaneously it really slowed the camera down and I had to go back to using one or the other so I wouldn't lose any shots waiting for the buffer to clear. The fear we all have if having a card go bad. I have been fortunate and had that happen only once in the last 10 years
Guys just get an A7Rii with a battery grip and two extra batteries and stop being gear heads. I've made so much money off this setup in my career for photo and video doing big commercial advertising work. It's insane how much people are driven to consume by these companies. In 18 months people will be rushing to sell their A7Riii before the value drops when the next model is announced...
Dan! literally got these stills and video from Jared Polin. The video where he displayed these images/video came directly from his video entitled "Sony a7R III Real World Review (vs Nikon D850)" at about 30 minutes in. And, it's nothing worse than it's opposite. Just be straight up and fully disclose. People are on RU-vid seeking guidance and help. Do your own real shooting, please. SMH
Sidney Black i bought an A7 II about 2 years gap. The A7R II was too expensive. I never had any issues with the A7 II Workflow and the limitations on ISO and AF and burst speed were never important. With the A7R III on the market it definitely is Wirtz upgrading tot he A7R II now. Used price in Europe for a really nice piece is maybe 1200€ or if you do not need support there are Asian grey market imports brand new for 1300€. Will go for a well maintained used and be happy for years again. Maybe I will get an A7R III when the IV is on the market for a few months, maybe I will wait for the V or VI. With the quality of cameras there is little need for upgrades since some years. Ok, i never Shot a video in my life and do mit intend to do so
I have one on order. I have already traded in my A7R2, which I loved, but the new features address many of my issues. A pro for 40 years, i switched to Sony from Canon in January. Have Sony and Sigma lenses (with MC-11 adapter) and also an A6500 as a second body.
I’ve used both professionally and I say absolutely upgrade. The difference in quality is slight but it’s there. Pixel shift for product photography, 120fps in 1080 (finally) but really this is a quality of life upgrade moreso than anything else. R2 users will recall the frustration of shooting with autofocus and the dread of looking into that battery percentage corner (oh god, so I have at least 3 fully charged batteries for this gig??) This upgrade was the best choice I’ve made in a while. Very interested to see where they take it with the SIII though 👀
+Matt WhoisMatt Johnson hahaha... Maybe a bit premature. I'd love to see a flip screen (not holding out hope), 4k 60, 10 bit at least over hdmi, unlimited recording, and all the upgrades from this camera but we'll see.
We need more features for older models via firmware, like new color science, slog 3 etc. And I still don’t get why Sony doesn’t just change the hinge on the rear display to flip out then articulate not just tilt. Otherwise this camera is near flawless.
thank you for the info Dan. How is the focusing in the dark ? ( Dance floor ) Also is the viewfinder evf the same size as the previous one ? Does it compare to the size of a pro level full frame dslr camera? Last time I tried the A7rii I was put off not by the evf but by the small size of it. Keep up the good work!
I'll do more testing soon when I have it in studio but it was great out there. We did some night astro shooting and I was focusing in near dark just as good as my 5D4 although my subjects were mostly stationary. The viewfinder is better than the RII and just like the A9. Compares well to the 5D4 but the D850 is massive so not that big.
George the size isn't important, the quality of the image making is what counts. I switched from my bigger Canon DSLRs to Sony in January, and will never go back, and I have large hands.
Thank you Gerald, and if I was shooting something other than weddings I would care about having the best possible image quality. Since I do what I do, I NEED a viewfinder that makes my eyes comfortable.
I would definitely consider either getting the RIII or if you can't afford it, I would absolutely get the A7III over the A7RII. There were just a bunch of huge updates that came with the 3rd deg cameras
Worth it !! Amazing Hybrid Cam Nowadays, nobody want to buy Thick Mobile Phone, And almost nobody want to buy Thick DSLR Camera, _Unless you were a hardcore pro photographer_
Does this sony a7r3 have the ridiculously annoying dim screen when shooting 4K video that the a6300 / a6500 and a7r2 all had? (Basically unusable outdoors as the screen dims so much in that mode) ? Let me know asap. Cheers!
Coming from an A7ii would you recommend an A7rii or and A7riii? I use my A7ii for travelling and street photography, but when I do weddings and events I use canon (not my own gear). Which do you suggest?
+Ari Stones the a7riii is good enough for weddings and events now so I would get that. Plus there are still plenty of improvements for general traveling / street use but the a7rii is not ideal for weddings/events but the 3 will handle it perfectly
Thanks for solidifying my decision. I was already leaning towards the A7riii. I’ve preordered today, but we’ll see how the backorder progresses. So if it can handle events and weddings then I’m sure I won’t be upgrading for a long time & just focus more on expanding my native lenses. Cheers
Great review! Still a little confused about the rolling shutter. Was this happening in single shot silent mode, too, or just continuous? Asking because silent mode was the big selling point for me (over the D850).
+Seth Cashman the silent mode on this will have less rolling shutter than the D850 in silent mode but you can see it in fast moving objects. Not portraits or landscapes though. If you really want to use silent mode for everything, only the Sony A9 used a stacked sensor to improve read times and reduce rolling shutter to virtually nothing
Great video! I was happy to see some of the things that I was hoping for. The focus tracking of a moving towards the camera subject looks improved a lot. I am judging from the cowboy seria of shots. That was a major issue with the 7r2. I think that for all the people that were using DSLR and A7r2 now there is an option to let go the DSLR :).
I had a friend lend me his a7r III for a week so I could compare it to my a7r II . For my purposes, which is honestly more still images than video. i can't justify the $650 price difference (current prices) for the minor upgrade. I did like the image stabilization but I have no way of testing the claim of 6 f-stops. It seems a bit generous. and going from A mount to E the cost of adding a new lens system is really adding up
I was told you can make timelapses with the camera that get transformed into a video automatically. Maybe you can check the settings again. I have this info from a Sony trainer. So maybe, just the app is not working anymore, but you can still automatically create timelapses.
+simonbolzdotcom you can't. What you can do is undercrank 1080p video by shooting fast motion at 1fps which will seem like a timelapse when sped up but is not what we want. But it's only 1080p video, doesn't record a jpeg/raw image, and you don't have full shutter speed control like when using intervalometers
Does the R3 handle Metabone to Canon adapted lenses better than the R2? I had some major issues that a firmware did help, but, still sometimes issues happen, like the settings changes or weird electronic issues changing canon to manual...there is a number of times I have to turn off and back on. I have had a issue with the card slot, and usb port that I needed to repair for $800. Is there a A7R4 coming up, now that we are mid 2019??
The R3 does handle the adapters better than the R2 but it's still not perfect and very dependent on the lens. It's also just about useless for video autofocus. I doubt we will see an A7R4 until end of 2020 at best. With the firmware updates and the lack of an A7S3, that signals that the R series is a little while away.
@@learningcameras Thanks for the response Dan!! I'm glad to hear there is an improvement. Also, my mount was a little on the sloppy side with some play. Hopfully R3 has that fixed. (I use the Metabones4 adapter)
3:15 to me the A7RII image quality overall is much better than A7RIII. More dynamic range and brighter. Where the other one is darker and looks more washed out.
120fps quality vs a7s ii? also 120fps in low light quality? lastly for really good 120 fps do you really need to be in ff mode? cuz I'm thinking about selling my a7s ii and getting this, but mostly so I can use super 35mm cinema glass. if aps-c mode 120fps is pretty weak than that would throw a wrench in my plan . thanks for your reply.
I definitely wouldn't sell the a7SII for this unless you are also big on photos and looking for more of a hybrid option. I'm sure we will have an a7SIII in the next 6 months so I would just hang tight!
In the UK its £700 difference between the A7Rii and A7Riii. I think for the extra money it's better to go for a7R3 since all the better improvement. I'll wait till next summer before my trip to buy one.
Still happy with my a7RII I see no need to spend the money and upgrade, I'd rather put that towards glass. I'll wait til the next generation comes out and pick up the RIII. (PS the price difference between the RII and RIII is way more than "a couple hundred dollars" lol)
The price difference now is completely different to what it was years ago. Yeah, the A7RII has taken a nose dive in value since the A7III came out and basically wiped it out
You're definitely right about people holding off and waiting for Sony to give them a reason to switch. The lack of fully articulating touch screen is my deal breaker here unfortunately.
+Marticulate it's tough with video especially for gimbal use but for photographers, I wouldn't call it a deal breaker. Plus the 5d4 doesn't have any articulated screen and the D850 doesn't flip out either so is there a better option?
Better skin tones!?!! I have to respectfully disagree. Putting a capture of 3:18 in davinci, (although you can tell without even putting it into davinci), if you try to use the hue vs hue to correct the skin tones to match, the a7riii completely goes green if you try to match the 7rii. Not only is the skin of the a7riii slightly underexposed, but just look at the hands touching the door. She looks like a zombie on the a7rii! we need a much more controlled environment to determine this.
If quality is all that matters (landscapes/portraits) and money is a concern, get the a7RII. But the shooting experience, features, dials, autofocus, and battery life were so much better on the a7RIII, you will probably want to upgrade. If you are shooting any live events like weddings/sports, you will absolutely need the a7RIII
For these, I just used the standard profile. I usually use a natural profile for my own work and rarely shoot log. Yes, I use Lumetri for mild color grading for these and I will often use a Lut for my personal stuff but rarely for reviews
+adam o technically the a7riii is better quality and has better features but ergonomics, lenses, cost... Those are important to think about. A good lens collection for the Sony will cost at least $1000 more than on Canon
Hi sir, thanks for the video. I have a question please, Can we charge the battery By data cable without removing from the camera body. am asking for Sony A7 ii.
I hope Sony sells a lot of A7R3, so they may comecup with a FW for the A7R2...! I bought an A7R2 two months ago and, coming from an A7II ( which I still enjoy ), I'm liking very much the A7R2. I only wish a FW could fix the overexposure, usually now I keep the dial set to -1 EV all the time!!!
Yes, you can overheat these but they do have an option to let them get hotter before shutting down. Direct sunlight is your enemy. Usually takes at least 30 minutes of 4k video shooting in direct sun before they overheat but it really depends
@@learningcamerasfor music videos thinking of an upgrade from 80d to A73 features but can't make my mind and as m on tight budget. Thanks for such a fast reply, really appreciate it. Love from india ❤️
@@learningcameras yah.. 90d is also great, but thinking of upgrading to budget full frame. M looking out for g85/ gh5 also for its video options, very confused at the moment. Thanks again so much 😊
It's probably not worth it. I talked about it in the full review and showed an example. You can see a difference but only when viewing at 200%+, there is a huge chance for error given that it is multiple shots and any subject/camera movement will destroy it, and there are so few times where you can use that kind of shooting with multiple shots anyway.
but seriously though.. for the average consumer of which this video probably targets, it is really worth $800-1000 over the A7R2? In Hong Kong where I am the A7R2 is now as cheap as HK$15,850 (US$2,030) on the shelves compared to the A7R3 at HK$26,990 (US$3,450)
Not from a quality perspective obviously so you can still get the same quality on the RII. But if this camera is your daily driver, I really think the usability has improved to the point that it makes a HUGE difference. Plus I skipped Sony for my wedding cameras for so long because I needed dual SD cards so the RIII is a must for me. Also if you shoot moving subjects and not landscapes/portraits I would HIGHLY recommend the upgraded focus system/frame rate. Unless you are a landscape photographer, I'd probably upgrade.
thanks for your thoughts and you're probably right but I'm purely a consumer (non-pro) and as such have just pulled the trigger and upgraded by old A7R for an A7R2. The 3 is tempting but I really can't justify - maybe when the 4 or 5 comes out i'll upgrade to the 3!
I m also curious to know what happens when lets say I m in a dark scenario and I use off camera flash with slow shutter speeds. What kind of preview i get in this case ? I see an underexposed viewfinder ? I understand most people do not need this but I face it in each and every wedding party over and over for hours at a time. The question is how those fancy mirrorless cameras stuck up to dslr competition? I have not seen a reviewer touching this BASIC matter.
It has a 'gamma' setting that make the viewfinder/monitor much brighter in dark scenes. I think that should do the trick. Note that this setting is different that the 'Effect settings ON'.
thank you Mick! I m still wondering what happens with the external flash. If I activate the gamma setting I will still have to check the images like a dslr and review them *after* capture. Kind of contradicting the mirrorless advantage I would guess.
It's massive because it makes the camera now accessible and perfect for many pro users that absolutely need this ability. It's a huge convenience for about everyone but to many it's a must have and to me it is the main reason I never purchased the A7rii
@@learningcameras The MAIN reason'???? WHAT?Help me understand....you never purchased the A7r2 because,,,,,it did not have 2 card slots??? Please, and im serious, can you tell me how may times during a shoot a card just completley failed on you? be honest! Never in 5 years of shooting has it happened to me
@@jal2550 had one card go bad at a wedding with the A7III. Had dual cards so no worries. Had another card give me an error and had to stop shooting it but the images were still there. Just a single corrupt image. But there are more reasons I need dual cards other than redundancy. I often have 2nd shooters and it's great to have 1 card for me and allow them to take the 2nd card home with them...things like that. Plus the bigger battery, better controls, autofocus improvements...those were all huge
You say you can save a few bucks by getting the R2 but it's literally $1,000 bucks cheaper. I wish you'd do a real value comparison given the street price difference.
Yeah, it went on a huge sale around black Friday and is still on it. Not sure if they will maintain that price though. From a quality perspective they are almost the same. The value is going be in real world use which for landscape photographers might be minimal but most others it will be well worth it. I shoot weddings and found the a7RII almost unusable without dual cards, better focusing, and decent battery life to name a few upgrades so the value is ABSOLUTELY there. But if you can live with imperfections in exchange for $1000 in savings, the quality is the same so the a7RII might be fine.
im sure the techy geeks will be rushing out to upgrade, good thing is if i do choose to switch there'll be plenty of excellent second hand systems out there at a decent price.
At the end of the day the Rii will still poop out arguably the best looking files you will see coming from anythang. That being said i sold a iv and kept my iii. Nothing beats the Riii
Should I buy A7R2 or Nikon D750, very much confused :( , I didn't try mirrorless yet. Any one recommend to buy mirrorless instead of DSLR ? Till now I am shooting with D7200 with zoom and wide angle lens.
I would highly recommend the A7III over the A7RII and probably go with the A7III over the D750. Nothing wrong with the D750 but it's older and simply can't keep up with the newer Sony.
Neck and neck with quality. If you love the viewfinder and the more traditional style of photography, the D850 is great. But once you turn on live view, video, or silent mode, things start to fall apart and the A7RIII starts looking really good. Plus the D850 is REALLY heavy by comparison with a 24-70 F2.8 attached and much taller. I found it didn't fit well in my backpacks and personally I'm beginning to try to lighten my load so I appreciate how small I can make the a7RIII kit but that's more subjective as you may want a bulky camera with huge grip and the a7RIII requires the battery grip for that and still get's tight with big lenses. Also to get the high speed frame rates on the D850 you need to spend $1000 more on battery grips and D5 batteries and XQD cards. Also if you use lenses longer than 200mm often, you might have a tough time with the Sony lens lineup...at least until next year when more become available
Dan Watson is sony more reliable? I have the a7 1st version and compared to nikon, sony a7 start up look unreliable. Sometime, i receive error when turn it on. Nikon on the other hand, it makes me feel like a real camera. How is the iso on d850 when the scene is completely dark and how is a7r3? Is color on a7r3 consistent at different exposure.
It's tough to know about reliability this early. Hopefully by the 3rd gen things are getting better but who knows. Of course Nikon has issued recalls over their shutter mechanism on almost every recent camera starting from the D600 (which I had) so I wouldn't act like they have a perfect record either. In fact, rather than fix the D600 they refused to acknowledge an issue and instead released the D610 which was the same camera with a new shutter. I think they eventually were forced to issue a recall but I suffered for it and several other cameras had issues. I'll be testing the other items more when I have the camera for a longer period.
Really bummed about no timelapse. Common Sony give us timelapse. My Canon 5Dlll has no timelapse. And for the last 5 years I've been wanting my next camera to have timelapse. Sony is supposed to be the company that gives us all the new technology. But even Canon now has built in timelaps. Common Sony. Give us timelapse in a firmware update right now. There is no excuse for this. I hope in your review you spend some time on the silent shutter. Can you shoot people walking. Or turning there head. What exactly are the limits of it without getting rolling shutter. You have my hopes up with what you said in this video.
No issues with silent mode for movement like that. The issue will be flickering lights and maybe whip pans. You saw there wasn't even a huge amount visible in the helicopter blades.
Still not sure why the customer should always be the one to pay for 'admitted improvements' - it kind of says 'we screwed up guys but hey, we get you to pay for it...' Not good. Not fair. Update the firmware and the operation to correct the stuff you'd did wrong, Sony. Don't expect your customers to have to buy a new camera every time.
+Ed Schirra I hear you but none of the big changes were firmware upgradable. Battery, more focus points, new shutter, dual cards, joystick, new video button, USB C... The only potential firmware upgrade is with video by oversampling. But even that might be relying to some extent on a new processor. I guess they could fix the menu system
+J V I'd say it's way better for everyone other than maybe landscape photographers. But even they will appreciate the improved touch screen, evf, and battery life
>way better It isn't, the IV will be. It's an A7R II that is better for sports/wildlife, that's about it. Dual slots for peace of mind and better battery (not that battery was bad if you used airplane mode). Woo. I'll wait.
It's hilarious that Panasonic still kick their ass for IBIS and 4K video, in bodies less than 1/4 the price. Also, could you maybe say "Amazing" a couple hundred more times in your videos? .... seriously .... calm down on the over-the-top praise
Actually I personally owned the GH5 until the A7III came out and then switched to Sony a couple months ago but really not for the video and mostly because it also shoots better stills. My issues with the GH5 were low light and autofocus but it certainly had some killer features and quality which is why it was my go to for video. But when it comes to a hybrid shooter, the Sony is certainly amazing. As a pure video camera, I go back and forth between Sony and Panasonic as to which I like more
DANG. I wish we could re-upload videos, add annotations, and fix mistakes. Sucks too because often companies do firmware updates that fix things we talked about in the review and we can't change anything
Yeah, the a7RII went on a big sale around black Friday and is still heavily discounted. It's actually a real steal at that price but the actual price still fluctuates between $2700-2900 and it was $2900 still when I filmed this review! Who knows if it will stay around $2300
Coming from a D810, I would highly recommend the RIII. Other than video (which would be a huge step up from the D810 even in the RII), the a7RII would come with some big negatives like no dual cards, iffy autofocus, crap battery life...things like that which could make the switch rough. But I think the a7RIII would be a good upgrade from the D810 especially if you want a smaller/lighter setup and are interested in video...and it's the same price as the D850 so no worries there!
