An alternative to the 1 and 2 options for different shooting settings, you can use the toggle/hold feature to set a custom button to quickly change shooting settings to increase shutter speed, drive mode etc. It's an incredible feature. I do this for wildlife/birds because you simply don't have time to switch to another setting. I use 1 and 2 for filming in 24 and 120 fps. Thanks for the video :)

I totally agree that high res is a huge advantage, it's quite fun to crop and re-frame photos, and every single lens you buy, it's like a double when switching to APS-C and the quality is still excellent.

Thanks a lot for making this video. This is a decision I've been trying to make and you absolutely pointed out several things that I've not seen in any of the many other videos I've watched on this topic - ie 500k vs 200k shutter and construction quality. I hope this video makes it further up in the search results as I think a lot of people are unaware of some of the points you made.

Very good comparison review. Thanks. I already own the 7R3, a decision from the beginning I made for the size as I was primarily purchasing it for architecture and large prints. However, I was dickering back and forth on getting a cheaper 'B' body as backup, and have decided NOT to get the a73 as several features I care about would be missing entirely. I think I will just have to wait until people buying a7R4's are jettisoning their good-condition-used a7R3's and just get a 'spare'. Thanks!
@ericinthewild

Hi Randolph --- I think that is a good decision! As I mentioned, the additional expected life span alone could tip the scales in favor of the A7Riii in my opinion. Given the prices are somewhat similar at the moment, it makes it easier; as you said, many are dropping their R3s in favor of the R4s. Thanks for watching! Appreciate it.

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for this video, even at today's date in time! I was considering downsizing to a a6600 or similar for an upcoming trip to Portugal but after watching your video, it has reassured my love for the RIII and, has prevented me from what I believe would have been a huge mistake. Thank you very much for the comparison between the two cameras. I have both cameras and they complement each other very well. Crop mode on the A7III is 10 MP not 8 MP , inferior to the 18 MP A7RIII but usable. The difference in resolution is evident when working with the photos in PP but not when the photos are used in social media or printed at sizes that are common to most people. For landscapes there is no doubt about which camera to use but for other types of photography having smaller files has its advantages. both to work in PP for a more comfortable workflow without having to have a supercomputer and for storage reasons. Without saying that the A7RIII does not work well for weddings or street photography I think the A7III is a better tool.

Picked up my used a7iii a couple of days ago for 4 reasons: - Money (got it 900€ used and there's no way you'll be able to find an Riii down to that price just yet, lowest was 1250 or something) - Low light. Both in video and photos that thing is a beast and is rightfully in the middle of the resolution vs sensitivity battle, it's a much better all rounder than an R or an S camera. Anything you might want to get into you can with this camera and that's a big selling point to people without a lot of money to throw around. I also do a lot of astrophotography so an R wouldn't cut it, I was growing tired of fighting against noise. 24mp still allow for some cropping too, 12 or even 10mp in apsc mode are both more than enough for online posting or small prints, it's just more limited to re-framing instead of getting extra reach out of a photo. - Lenses. With more megapixels you need better quality glass (if you want to utilise them) which means more money being thrown again. With a 24mp sensor I can get away with lenses that are even considered bad in the community which is really important to me. - Storage. Can't be buying 4k capable quality sd cards all the time or cleaning my storage devices to find space. I'm a little trigger happy so these 24mp fit like a glove to me. I do think that if you have the money an a7Riii+ camera is the best choice, but one point still stands and that's low light performance. Unless some kind of wonder material starts getting used soon I don't see the R cameras beating low megapixel full frames at low light. Edit: The a7iii gives you a 10mp image in crop mode, not an 8mp one.

@YourSpongeBoy
@YourSpongeBoy 2 года назад
@@JeanV1986 I have been loving the Riii. I mainly shoot in studio so my ISO never goes above 400. I do shoot weddings and events on occasion, and in those instances I shoot with the 7iii primarily. Since the release of the newer cameras, I’m heavily considering buying 2 a7IV’s and selling my Riii and 7iii. I have over 220k shutter actuations on my 7iii (which is only rated for 200k) so I think I’m coming to the tail end of the camera life. My Riii only has around 40k, so there’s plenty of life left in that camera. Decisions decisions. I hope this helped Jean.

@@YourSpongeBoy thanks for your quick answer! I'm loving the A7iii honestly but I wish the screen was better, the evf is ok but could also be improved. Also, the more durable shutter is a plus. I was trying to decide between the A7Riii and A7iii. I went with the A7Riii since I wanted to be able to print big. It was also on sale and got it for US$1718 + tax (with education discount). The A7iii would have been about $1550. I am still waiting for the camera to arrive, but was worried if I made the wrong decision by going with the Riii when everybody says you don't need high megapixels and 7iii is an all-around better camera. Thank you! .. I watched this video over a year ago when I was making the switch to Sony full frame. The points about R3 build quality & shutter life where great points that no other reviews seem to cover. My main reason for getting R3 was for the detail & cropping. I only shoot with primes at mostly club events so the ability to crop in a lot has been so valuable. I now only use the 35mm 1.4 GM & the 50mm 1.2 GM with the 7R3. You were correct about ISO, I shoot in a lot of dark clubs, so 8000 is max on R3 I find usable too. Now that they have updated the LCD screen I may get another as a back up. I got the R3 new for $2,500 (US dollars), worth every dollar! Thanks again !

Hi Parths! Thanks for the kind words. Well, I suppose a budget question will come into this answer. Of course, the A7iii is great and capable camera. With that said, I would simply go with it, and invest in lenses. Many top notch guys shoot with the A7iii. If at some point you think you NEED the A7iv, well, then flip your A7iii on the used market (buy it used, too!!) and you probably won't lose so much on your investment; plus you got crucial time to practice and fine tune your skills. Looking forward to seeing what comes out of it! Enjoy and have fun!

as i was waiting (about 2 years) for the 73 to drop under $1300 used (now even found for $1000) it seems that the r3 has also dropped to that price, which is pretty wild. after having watched a few comparisons my only concern aside from the obviously larger file is the lower light-gathering capabilities of the more populated sensor, a concern i also share for the 74, in comparison to the 73. i first watched a few comparisons of the 73 to the s2, which it ironically outperforms in iso, but the s3 is at the other end of the spectrum. is the slightly lower iso a worthwhile consideration in lower-light scenarios? and another important concern, is the lack of an a-a filter something that induces serious moiré?

Well, we can all have our own ideas. For me, the better build and the extra MP alone are worth it for the R. It is found only a few hundred more on the used market too, so why not. I actually bought both, and after re-selling the A7iii; ended up only paying 140EUR more for the R. So with price out of the way, the features of the R and quality of the images are simply better. Great video that triggered my mind setup to switch A7III for the RIII but with some trade off. Currently, I have A7III and Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, Sony 50 1.8 and Tamron 28-200 which replaced 28-75 as the main lens due to its phenomenal optical performance and relatively fast aperture. So with that being said, I decided to sell 28-75. Please help me to decide, should I trade my A7III and T 28-75 2.8 for the RIII (still having T28-200) or just sell T 28-75 2.8 and buy another lens like eg. Zeiss 16-35 f/4. I mainly shoot family photos (running children :>, holidays), landscape scenery from family trips etc... and a bit of aviation (that Tamron 200mm in 18Mpx crop would give me 300mm with a room to crop even further in post ~8Mpx 450mm) I think that the main reason for me to switch is the resolution and the ability to crop or use (18Mpx) APSC mode but I'm not sure if this is a good trade-off vs buying another lens for A7III In terms of a low light performance on the A7RIII I've found (somewhere in the reviews) that RIII in crop mode behaves somewhat close to A7III, are you able to confirm that as low light performance on the A7III is the king and I afraid a bit to lose that.

Hi M C, Since you already have the A7iii, I think the decision is a bit more difficult. For instance, I bet the 100-400 + A7iii would be better than the 28-200 and A7Riii. I guess that would be a bit more expensive, however. If you are really feeling like you need more reach, than I'd say the lens is how to get it, versus the aspc crop-mode. Granted, that IS a perk. This is a tough choice, and it really just depends what you really want in the end. Is it worth it to you to get those better shots of the airplanes? Crop mode at 300mm isn't too bad, as you said. The A7iii does also have a better AF system, if that is coming in handy all the time during the family gatherings; but let's be honest, most cameras these days can nail the shot. Low-light would have to go to the A7iii, but honestly I have been impressed even with the low-light capability of the R... Yet, I do imagine, however, that the A7iii + Tamron would exceed the cost of the A7R, and maybe give you the option to buy another lens anyway (the Sony 85 1.8 portrait lens is a dream), unless you are thinking to get a new R. Just some thoughts, sorry it cannot be more definitive! All the best!

@@ericinthewild Thanks for taking your time to reply... As this is not that easy to decide I think that both options are good. I decided to take blind luck :) and put on sale combo a7iii + T2875 and T28200 If I sell combo first I will buy R If T28200 will go first I will but Sony 70-300 G or Sigma 100-400 As a side note, I've already had the latest Tamron 70-300 and got rid of it as IBIS wasn't enough at 200-300 f6.3 to keep the shutter speed down to not crank up the ISO (greetings from Ireland where its cloudy all the time and iso starts at 3200 with f6.3 at ~1/200 1/300) Only time will tell if this is a good decision but in the end, I think that either way would be a good option unless someone smarter than me will shake me saying ... what the ... are you doing 😄 Thanks and best of luck with your channel 👍 & SUB

Two months later... I was able to sell A7III and T 28-75 2.8 (leaving T28-200) and I finally switched to A7RIII + zeiss 16-35 f4 + Tamron 28-200 Im very pleased with the IQ.... and that freedom of cropping when needed. My high ISO concern was not needed, A7RIII does the job as well as A7III (maybe on paper it's a bit behind but in real life its very very solid). eg. Photos in restaurant in dimmed light conditions with iso 8000-12800, no problem 😉 I also noticed increase in sharpness on my Tammy, additionally, I was able to buy zeiss 16-35 f4 and with this camera the end results are just stunning. Have my zeiss on the body all the time as an everyday setup. Cheers

It's 2023 and when i saw someone selling a7riii earlier this year, i took the chance to get it. As a photographer, i think the extra pixel really suites my style of shooting.. I can go back and forth from crop to ff just by setting my c3 into 1 push button switch from ff to crop and vice versa without loosing much pixels.. It's like having 35-50, 50-85 85-135 at the same time at widest aperture.. Take note that i also used a7iii before. A7iii is a bit better for videos esp low light but it's not noticeable.. Prints in both bodies is quite similar but the r3 has and edge when it comes to large prints..but but but what really sold me is the versatility of it when it comes to shooting between ff to crop and vise versa..

I recently upgraded from the a7RII to the a7III, but the camera was defective so I sent it back to Adorama who promptly botched the replacement so I cancelled the order. I was mad at first, but then when I went through a different seller, I decided to treat myself and get the a7RIII instead of the a7III. It arrives tomorrow, and the more I see, the more I'm glad I went with the RIII instead. I was worried about fewer PDAF points, and being able to use them up to f/11 (I think) in the a7III vs f/8 in the RIII but loosing those megapixels always kept nawing at me, so in a way I'm glad Adorama screwed up which forced me to change my plans...

Hi John, as you said, I think you got lucky in some weird way! The R is great, and you are going to love it. I have not had one qualm about purchasing it. Plus, my trusty MBP handles the files much better than expected. I shoot in compressed RAW. Let me know how your experience goes! Also, do you think it would be useful to make a video about custom keys and menu setup?
@alchemist_x79
@alchemist_x79 4 года назад
So far I've only had it for a day, but I already feel it's a quantum leap ahead from my a7RII. The autofocus is absolutely sick. The only thing I'm disappointed with is it seems that the touch screen I can only specify where the focus point goes, but then I still have to focus with a camera button. I was hoping I could tap a spot and it would acquire focus. Unless I'm missing something? But other than that, it's a minor quibble. I haven't done much with the video features yet (I'm a stills shooter) but coupled with the 100-400GM it's been a beast so far. Overall I'm very happy with it. I think a custom keys and menu setup video would be a great idea.

Hi! Great videos, I appreciate them a lot! Deciding between a73 & a7r3...I’ve been leaning towards the R3, but something that has me worried is that I’m someone who hates dragging a tripod with, I enjoy handling my camera for even landscape/wildlife shots I take. A friend warned me with high megapixels with the a7r3, it will show more hand held shake. Have you found this to be true? Any insight is super appreciated!
@ericinthewild
@ericinthewild 3 года назад
Thanks Madeline! I also rarely have a tripod with me, but I've yet to feel like this cost me a shot! That said, it's true, the a73 will be impacted less by camera shake. This is an interesting question... I'm not really sure how to answer it other than saying: yes, in theory, the concern is valid, but in practice, I find myself leaning more toward the benefits that the a7r3 brings to the table.
