As a mainly still photographer hobbyist, do you see much gain in this cam over the 7iv? The ai tech seems tempting. I’m just wondering in real life if I’d notice a difference. Not a pro, but shoot a lot of cars and portraits . Seems like a big jump price wise from the a7iv. Thanks for a great video.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras Месяц назад
It's not much of an image quality step up from the A7IV other than more resolution. The resolution can help with retouching, pixel editing, or large printing but otherwise quality is similar. The big difference is ergonomics, hardware, a few features, and autofocus but most of them you can live without if it's more of a hobby. I actually used the A7IV as my main photo camera until 2 months ago when I upgraded to the RV so anything I've shot before 2 months ago was on the A7IV
@AUav8r05
@AUav8r05 Месяц назад
@@learningcameras I'm pretty much set on the 7iv. Sony has it for $200 off MSRP currently. I was tempted to try the cii, but it just seems more like a toy camera size wise coming from my rugged Canon body. Hopefully the AF is fine on the iv. I'm sure it is leaps and bounds better than my current nearly 10 year old DSLR. Thanks for the help!
@learningcameras

@@AUav8r05 Yeah, this deal on the A7IV is amazing: bhpho.to/3LYxxYW Pretty much the only time I utilize the new AF tech in the latest cameras is with portraits where tracking can be better and maybe animals which I personally rarely photograph. For everything else the older cameras are just as good

@harbinger26 2 месяца назад
@@learningcamerasthey’re decreasing? Really? Why? I’ve never heard this
@learningcameras
@learningcameras Месяц назад
@@harbinger26 More megapixels doesn't always help and in the quest for speed, most cameras have launched electronic shutter modes focusing on high speeds but that take a hit to image quality. The new Nikon Z6III uses a partially stacked cmos sensor for example that's amazing for speed but you lose almost a stop of dynamic range compared to the older Z6II
@harbinger26
@harbinger26 Месяц назад
@@learningcameras ah this makes sense. The key then is a sensor that’s stacked, global shutter ideally, and fast enough processor/big enough buffer to take high MP photos quickly. That’s probably not impossible with todays tech, but it’s gonna approach $10k if I had to guess.

one year later and I think this video is great. I am deciding between the A1 and the A7rV I am starting a new gig of sports photography (baseball for a minor league team) and I do a lot of wedding videography. the rV features draw it to me but the power of the A1 pull me away. With the upcoming update to the A1 do you have an opinion?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 месяцев назад
I'm honestly torn on the A1. It could use the update but the A7RV will still have quite a few things the A1 doesn't have. But to me, I'd rather get the A7RV + A7SIII than the A1 by itself so if it were me, I'd be getting the R5 bhpho.to/3SSx8fl and then adding the A7SIII or FX30 later if you want 4k120 and some other features. The A1 is just too overpriced right now to buy
@BiratsUncutVlogs
@BiratsUncutVlogs 8 месяцев назад
Is it better tahn the A74 in video prospective ?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 месяцев назад
Slightly but not as much as you would think. The biggest advantage is better hardware...so the screen is better, viewfinder is beater...things like that. In 4k60 you also only have a 1.3x crop on the RV while the a7IV has a 1.5x crop. However in some ways that could hurt you because the 1.5x crop on the A7IV means when I want a wide angle 4k60 shot, I just use APSC lenses which work perfectly but the A7RV when you use APSC lenses you still need to crop a bit in post to avoid vignetting
@BiratsUncutVlogs
@BiratsUncutVlogs 8 месяцев назад
Thank very much for the time and rply back .I just wana know one thing is the video clarity of A7RV is crispier than the A74 ?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 месяцев назад
@@BiratsUncutVlogs No...the A7IV is able to oversample from the entire 7k sensor up to 30fps and even in 4k60 it oversamples from over 5k so as far as the detail on the A74, it's extremely good. I actually use it as my main interview/youtube studio camera because of that. The A7RV has a few autofocus improvements but I find they are only helpful in a few situations such as when tracking humans with a lot of other potential obstacles. The RV with the latest "AI" autofocus system is better able to know the difference between an actual person and something that resembles a person's eye
@BiratsUncutVlogs
@BiratsUncutVlogs 8 месяцев назад
Yaaaa thats what I wanted to know .Many of the youtubers have said that the A74 over hits very soon .Is this problem going to be a major one or kind of regration after buying this camera ?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 месяцев назад
@@BiratsUncutVlogs it does seem to overheat fairly quickly. The reason is because of that oversampling though so can't have it both ways unfortunately. I can usually get over an hour but it's tough to get 2 without a break in between. If you need longer, you need the A7SIII that doesn't oversample or the FX3 which has a fan

I have a Canon 6D and a 80D but am thinking about upgrading to mirrorless. I've been considering switching over to Sony, especially once the a7rV was announced but wondering if you would recommend going with the Canon R5 since I've got good Canon L glass as well as Lensbaby lenses with Canon mount. It seems from this review that you think they're pretty much on par level?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 месяцев назад
The Canon R5 is on a MASSIVE sale right now so I might jump on that since you already have some Canon lenses: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1547009-REG/canon_eos_r5_mirrorless_digital.html/BI/19484/KBID/11716 But overall they trade blows with the Canon having higher frame rates for photo and video and the A7RV is probably the better camera overall with better dynamic range, more native lenses, better autofocus, and more features. That said we might see a new Canon R5 with some minor updates in the next 6 months

Hey Dan, I would love your feedback. Im a former Canon 70D, 6D and 5D3 user. I switched over to the Sony A7R4 but someone stole it. Would you recommend the Canon R62 over the Sony A7R5?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 месяцев назад
Hey! I probably wouldn't go with the R62 OVER the A7R5 unless you shoot 4k60 a ton or need super high frame rates. I personally tend to use the R6II more often since most of my car videos are 4k60 (advantage Canon) and 24MP is enough in most cases, but the A7RV is a more impressive camera overall and you can still shoot 4k60, it just has a bit of a crop so getting wide angle shots is a bit more difficult but otherwise it's solid. Especially since you had the A7R4, I'd probably stay Sony

Can’t choose between A7rV and canon r5 ??? I want to have a hybrid camera. Will much appreciate an advice from you ❤
@learningcameras
@learningcameras Год назад
The ONLY issue with the A7RV as a hybrid camera is that it doesn't shoot full frame 4k60 but for me, that's a pretty big issue since I use 4k60 almost entirely for anything that's not talking head. But, the Canon R5 has a 30 minute record limit which is an issue for long format talking head videos so they both have opposite issues on the video side. On the photo side, both are amazing with the R5 working a bit better for fast action, sports, and wildlife with faster shooting and buffer performance and the A7RV works best for product and landscape photography with it's amazing dynamic range.

@learningcameras
@learningcameras Год назад
So if you don't need to shoot video, the A7RIV has basically the same image quality and the autofocus is still great so if you can live without the flip screen and a few other new features, I'd save the money and get the A7RIV used if you can...B&H has an open box one for a great price: bhpho.to/3NxCZSV . If you shoot video though, the RIV is worth the upgrade. The Sigma lens is great so that would be a great kit

Does this camera "feel" just as fast and responsive as the A1? I rented an A1 for a week and, when I went back to my A7RIV, that's what I missed the most! My camera felt "laggy" and sluggish compared to the A1. And I don’t mean the AF system or the shooting speed or the buffering, necessarily. I mean the general use of the camera. The menus, startup time, time between switching shooting modes, etc....just feels INSTANT on the A1 in a way that it doesn't on the A7RIV. Additionally, there are definitely times when you have to "wait on" the A7RIV, one example that comes to mind is that, after shooting a short burst (only 2-3 shots) of photos, I can't immediately record a video, I have to wait for the buffer to clear. (this is even when using a 300 MB/s write card, since there is a write-speed bottleneck inherent in this camera) The overall responsiveness of the A7RV hasn’t been mentioned in any write-ups or videos I’ve found, I’m starting to think there is an NDA Sony made folks sign to not talk about it!
@learningcameras

It does feel better and that's because of the faster processor. For cross-shopping purposes against the Canon R5, let’s not forget that Sony comes with Sigma, Tamron, Viltrox, Samyang, and other glass options that Canon no longer does. For me, glass options are this camera’s “killer app” relative to ANYTHING Canon offers. If this camera even comes anywhere close to the R5 in specs/performance, the ecosystem makes it a no-brainer, for me.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras Год назад
True. Every time I see a Canon executive, I beg them to open the line to 3rd party lenses. I honestly believe they will eventually but I think they are trying to build their own lens lineup first. I could be wrong but I just can't see them holding out more than another year or two most
@goodwolf152
@goodwolf152 Год назад
I would also expect Canon to reverse course, eventually…this seems like a short term cash-in on their existing “install” base, and is not likely sustainable long term. The only thing I’ll add is that presumably third party manufacturers would need to restart their development pipelines and scale up their production capacity. All of that carries lag time…meanwhile, development continues full steam ahead on e-mount. Sony’s lens catalogue is only growing while Canon harvests the profits from their almost 50% market share. TL;DR - I don’t think this is getting corrected any time soon, even if Canon reversed their decision today.

However, I am certainly glad you brought up the quality of the LCD and the fact that Sony are considered cutting edge in screen manufacturing. It's bewildering to me that they don't use this to their advantage and have a class leading rear LCD on their cameras.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras Год назад
I think that spec is actually incorrect. On the spec sheet Sony originally showed me they had a "3.2 screen" spec on there and I told them it was awesome they were increasing the screen size. They then told me that was referring instead to the 3 axis rotation + 2 axis tilt which I told them was confusing and after using the camera, it looked like the exact same size 3" panel as the other cameras. So I think everyone saw that spec and thought that was a screen size increase but I'm almost certain that's incorrect.

It does and I called Sony out for calling this AI because it doesn't feel like AI but I do think Sony does a better job with that deep learning aspect. Once the Sony identified the subject, it is less likely to get confused in my opinion than the Canon cameras. Obviously Canon AF is incredible now, but the deep learning aspect I think is better on the A7RV

For me the biggest disappointment with this camera is the burst rate at 10fps only in compressed raw, I would have been really happy with a slight upgrade and I was expecting 10fps uncompressed and 12-15fps compressed. That 1 spec alone is a deal breaker for me personally, also was the reason I didn't get A7 IV, Sony doesn't seem to have a direct competitor to the Canon R5, maybe they are saving that for the A9 iii?

The "AI" thing is way too misunderstood (and misused, in some way), blame it on manufacturers and general media (not scientific ones though). And we tend to follow this dead-end path. What it actually is : "deep learning" or "continuous reprogramming" computing system. Everytime some new information comes across, it gets implemented by the OS into the database and the processing starts right away with this new information taken into account. This means... if your device (here, a camera) does not yet perform to perfection, it just is because the computational structure is working on it. And the improvement shall come, soon, wihtout the device giving any prior notice. But it will come. So, if this Sony device actually hosts a "deep learning" processing system, within a few days/weeks/months (we can't tell, unless we are the actual programmers) you will feel a better behaviour of your camera's AF system. Keep this in mind, for it may be of some use very soon.

I have the a7riv and have been extremely happy with it. Over 300,000 on the shutter count. Still works great. I hate that Sony is still going with the cf express type A cards. They are just too expensive for what you get. Why not type b cards? I have the Sony A7iv and the a9, I and plenty happy with uhs -ii cards but with the A7iv I bought one 80gb type a card for $180, that’s crazy. And it sucks that they continue to use this card to get the full amount/performance with the camera. So the display is actually not bigger. I double checked with Sony because they said the screen was 3.2 "type" in the spec sheet but they were apparently referring to 3 axis flip + 2 axis tilt not the size. But I checked with the head of Sony and he confirmed it's the same size as the A7RV and it didn't seem bigger to my eyes. That's interesting on the resolution though. @Marc Estrella, I shoot with both brands and I believe Dan does too. Particularly, I have the R5 and R5C. It’s annoying that Canon doesn’t remove the 30min recording limit and the micro HDMI. And not allowing 3rd party lens manufacturers is short term minded. Aside from that, R5 is a great hybrid camera. But as Dan mentioned in the video, the A7R5 has some big upgrades. If you care about the lens selection, need to crop for your work, and a hybrid shooter, the A7R5 is a good choice. If you have a A7R4 and a stills shooter, upgrading is an iffy unless you have extra cash and want the latest and greatest features. If you prioritize ergonomics, skin tones, and high frame rates shooting (stills and videos) as a hybrid shooter (and not annoyed with what I mentioned above), then the R5 is a good choice. The R6 i or ii is good but the R5 is a better all rounder if you can afford it. What I would like to see more comparisons are the dynamic range, lowlight, and video codecs between R5 and A7R5
