Sometimes I'm not sure if you're talking about cameras or if you're trying to explain the Heisenberg Uncertainty Priniciple... 😂 I get lost sometimes but I love it! And I'm learning a lot!! It's like watching a camera scientist in his lab 🙏🏻👊🏻 💥 Great work, Gerald!
I LOVE YOU! I've been struggling with this since I got my A7SIII Monday. You made it crystal clear with your tests as always. I learned so much valuable and useable information here. You are a legend!
Finally got my hands on the a7Siii and this video is hands down the most comprehensive and helpful video on the Sony picture profiles on RU-vid. Thank you for your hard work Gerald!
Hi Gerald, great video. What if there was a person next to the grey card, what is the percentage of zebra would we be looking at? Also when exposing a grey card why 41% or 55%? Thanks a lot
Thank you Gerald, awesome video, may i ask two question? 1. when you shoot slog3 ,why you set the zebra on 94%? why not 109%. 2. in my thinking ,in a low dynamic range scene, use cine mode is better than slog3, keep more detail on not slog profile, is it correct?
At what point would you recommend moving from the 1st native ISO circuit to the 2nd? For example, instead of going from ISO 1600 to ISO 3200, should we jump to ISO 12,800 and throw on a 2-stop ND to compensate?
Gerald ... you rock. I just got my Sony A7S III today and this couldn't have been better timed. Your understanding of the technical side of filmmaking and ability to communicate is top notch. Thanks so much for making this.
Yeah , my film school cinematography only covers angles , lens , movement , and blocking. I learned a lot from this channel knowing how to expose and all of the kind of file and compression for better handling by the editor
I'm only 30 min. in, I shoot Canon c-log 2 not Sony, but this is just so epic I had to stop and comment. Just tremendously informative. It's great watching someone who's technical knowledge matches their enthusiasm and presentation skill. Thanks for making this.
For those who can't follow the technospeak, here are Gerald's final recommendations: If you plan to tweak things in post-production use S-Log 3 (43:28) with S-Gamut3 If you want a great video out of the box with minimal tweaking, then use: Cine-2 + Movie Color (47:16) Gerald has bought two Sony A7S IIIs, so I trust his judgment. Superb video!
Perfect timing! Just received my A7SIII a few days ago. Thanks a lot for this very informative video. And opening line for the next one @ 41:00 : I am Gerald Undone and "I am kind of a pink person."
Dear Gerald 'Genius' Undone, thanks for making this! Didn't even feel like 49 minutes, and being an amateur, I am definitely gonna have to watch this a couple more times, there's just so much information! Thanks again🙏👊
Wow! Was just ready to delve into this on my new a7S III - saved me a ton of time. After this beast of a video, I think the next episode should deep dive into DIYing a molecular transporter. 👍
the man, the myth, the legend: Gerald Undone ladies and gentlemen. 🔥 So hype to watch through this now and then all over again when my A7siii actually comes in hahah. Thanks so much for this, man!
The 6 dislikes came from those really dedicated super fans who have notifications turned on, just so they can hit dislike. They watch every minute of every video you make and are just really jealous they can’t put out videos of their own and they think a dislike will help. Bless their hearts. All the dislikes after 6 are still fans but just not super fans ya know?
Oh I almost forgot an obligatory comment about how the colour science of my USB web cam from 2009 has far superior colour science than this Sony crap. I’m going to shoot my next film entirely on potatoes from Idaho anyhow. Who needs this biased super helpful information anyways yada yada yada. You know the drill
How is it possible for someone to dislike this. The sheer amount of effort put into this is just mind blowing. Thanks a lot for such a detailed and thorough explanation Gerald!
Watched and edited some footage set in slog2 from the A7III. You have now taught me how to expose using a grey card and now I know about the color transform tool in resolve. This is amazing about to reedit some footage but definitely will be using this for video work in the future. Like i said on twitter , This should be a QR code in the sony manual. Great work sir! Thank you. Best 49 minutes i have spent all day!
I don’t own any camera from the Sony system and I don’t plan to and yet here I am, watching geralds video on the a7siii and I’m actually enjoying myself.... this guy has the voice of a damn documentary narrator!
I rarely stop top click a thumbs up... Even being a RU-vidr myself I just jump from one video to another... but this is def worth a huge thank You! You helped me to understand how to expose and grade Log footage finally it all makes sense!
I am not even a Sony user; however, I finished the entire video without even noticing. The knowledge and effort put into this video is beyond amazing. Thank you so much.
Gerald, thank you for continuing to educate us! I would love it if you would actually make some PDF guides for download that I would actually purchase! Would love to have all this information printed out for reference. Actually I would buy every “guide” you would make and would recommend it as critical reading for all of us filmmakers!
Next intro: “Hi I’m Gerald Undone and I use time travel to make these epically detailed videos!”🤣 - Seriously though, this like many of your recent videos is phenomenal work, thank you so much for taking the time to put this all together and being able to explain everything in a way that makes perfect sense 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👌👌👌
SO MANY THINGS! ALL OF THE THINGS! I know so much more now. You are amazing at what you do, and the best at explaining "WHY" things the way they are on top of just telling us HOW. That takes so much more effort, much appreciated.
Great info. The coup de grace is "If you underexpose you're putting your image down into the noise floor". A great way to look at it. Would like to suggest an end to end video where you take the A7SIII, the Atomos Ninja V, put them in ProRES RAW SLOG3, ETTR the scene properly, and then set your contrast (not a full color grade). I don't think you've shown that workflow straight through.
Gerald I want you to know you have helped me and so many other creators more than you could ever possibly know. I know the comment section and the dislike button can be places of negativity, but you truly are making a difference in so many peoples lives and we are all improving because of the tremendously arduous work that you do. Thank you so much for always going above and beyond. I truly appreciate it, and I now I'm not alone. Keep killin it. Alright. Im done.
I'm painfully aware of how much effort these videos take to produce and I am just in awe of your detailed testing methodology, technically knowledge, and ability to communicate effectively. Finally got my A7Siii this week and this video is incredibly helpful. Thank you.
I’ve only got one question. Why does the most standard mode of “picture profile off” have super whites. Shouldnt that be the one mode of any of them that is 100% broadcast ready right out of camera? I only discovered this was even a thing like a month ago but all Sony cameras are like this. I had been clipping my highlights for five years... Anyway absolutely fantastic video as usual!
This is the video I’ve been waiting for since I preordered on 7/28! Very informative and answers most of the questions I’ve had, and with (mostly) understandable explanations of why. Thanks Gerald!
As someone who doesn't have formal training in video production, I often feel I have several gaps in my knowledge around all of these topics - but I have to say how helpful this channel has been. I often feel I need to watch multiple times to absorb it all (because I don't understand all the terms yet), but the investment of time is well worth it - thanks for taking the time to make these videos Gerald. You're impacting a lot of people's productions in a positive way.
Is it weird that if I see a youtube video longer then 20 min I get mad but when I see Undone videos 25+ mins I get excited lol Thanks for the info. My camera is still on the way but I shoot a lot of night and dark scenes and was wondering if I should shoot them with PP off or HLG3 instead of SLOG3 but this helps me choose if I even need to change profiles
rsmith02 I’m already shooting slog2 not trying to go down to cine2 unless it truly has a benefit in low light but this explanation already proves that I should be fine with slog.
@@TheInfluenceStudios As long as you stay in 10-bit, S-log 2 or 3 seem fine if you expose them as Gerald shows here. I think switching between profiles depending on scenes would get confusing when you go to edit them.
rsmith02 yeah I never mix them. If I feel like I need a different profile for the night scenes, then I’ll shoot the whole thing in cine or hlg. But I’m gonna try and shoot everything/most in slog3
Gerald, man! WOW. Been watching you for a few years now but you are unlocking your final form! HAHA.. Man this video is amazing and so informative.. and explained in such a way that 4 years of film school and all other RU-vid videos in the world combined have never achieved. The fact that this video has 21 unlikes is what is wrong with the world. I wish I could like this video 10,000 times! When it comes to cameras... you aren't just the best thing on RU-vid! You are the best thing ANYWHERE. Mad props! So happy to see that a ton of the masters I respect are posting how they are learning stuff from this video in the comments. Please keep doing what you are doing for as long as you enjoy doing it. I will be here for the ride! A deep and sincere thank you, brother! Some people go into insane amounts of student loan debt without ever learning the amount of information that you just fit into 49 minutes!
How many stops up do you need to over expose slog2 to get rid of noise in the shadows. You said that for slog3 that is 1.66 stops up, resulting in middle gray going from 41% to 55%. But what is the equivalent for slog2´s 32%?
It says a lot about the teacher when he can keep a student interested in a subject their not remotely interested. You do a great job of describing everything in a clear, and easy to understand way. I don't shoot video, or have interest in the a7siii, but Im loving everything about this video for some reason.
Simply excellent! I can see how much time you put into this. I want you to know that I deeply appreciate it. I would say that you're at your best when you make these longer videos. It seems like you can breathe a little more.
Okay, seriously, I don't get it. If PP off has less noise and clips at the same point S-Log 3 does, why should I shoot in S-Log 3? And how come it has more dynamic range if they produce the same image? Referring specifically to the area from 22 minutes in to around 30 minutes in.
I cannot express my appreciation enough for guys like Gerald Who really make time for creating these in depth tutorials and reviews to help others, it just shows how much he cares to help others then the actual social status of subscriber counts and money.
Gerald, this was super helpful! Thank you so much for all the work you've put into this. It is very very much appreciated by the entire camera community. You're making a difference with your knowledge and we're grateful for your nerdy brain haha!
I've been playing around with my 7siii for a week, trying to sort all this crap out, the whole time thinking "Gerald's going to sort this for me, any day now...", and so he has.
I thought the same for a long time... but once you go all in, and put in the work to learn and get better daily... you will get there sooner than you think!!! Wish you the best of luck!!!
rsmith02 not necessarily. This is the only So y mirrorless camera that shoots in 10 bit. And also the only one with dual native ISO. a lot of these concepts don’t apply to say the a7iii
If you expose SLOG3 to 55% middlegray and use the correction LUT (S-Log3 SG3.Cine to Rec. 709 (v2).cube), how do you bring it back down in Premiere BEFORE the LUT? I just set exposure to "-0,7" and landed at 41% Middlegray... then applied the LUT. But Im not sure if the order is correct here, since Davinci is more clear with Nodes in specific order. Thanks!
You can either use two instances of Lumetri, or yes lower exposure, then apply the LUT down in the creative section so it happens after. After the LUT is on, you can jump back up the exposure and finesse it.
I just did a night shoot with the a7SIII and one of the biggest things I "learned" was not to shoot SLog for dark scenes as this introduces noise, so instead shoot in a Cine or HLG mode. Your video basically says they are all wrong and shoot Slog3 at night as gammas don't introduce noise (If I'm understanding you correctly). I will trust you over everyone else with no issue.
It just means get the exposure right and keep parts of the image that matter well above the noise floor. It's more intuitive to expose Cine 2 than S-log, so practice if you want to use it.
But why do the (linear) exposure correction before applying the LUT/CST? Won't this throw off the LOG distribution?! Color science is extremely interesting but also pretty confusing sometimes
Thanks for this! I've previously been scared to shoot in log, but this has broken me out of my shell. I think I may have found a bug in the A7siii firmware though, which may explain why some people (including myself) still feel like slog3 is too noisy. Yes, while in slog3 at 12,800 ISO the image does significantly clean up, there are some cases while in auto ISO where this does not trigger as expected, and you get even more noise than at 10,000 ISO. How to reproduce: Shutter priority mode, Auto ISO (min. 12,8000, max 25,600). Sometimes it doesn't flip to it's clean state at 12,800, so you have to cover then lens with your hand to make it completely dark then release. Only then the image cleans up. You can see this clearly when you have focus peaking turned on, and there are dots all over the noise. After covering with your hand, the peaking dots suddenly disappear, and never return. Sorry I'm reporting a bug here, but couldn't find any official Sony forum to post haha Also, while shutting in full auto ISO, only setting a max ISO, the times when it happens to be on 8000 and 10,000 are just straight up unusable. Such a shame that they didn't put this second base ISO lower.
Given that Resolve's Color Space Transform separates gamma from gamut, would it be possible to shoot in slog3 with rec709 gamut & still be able to get an accurate transformation? I only ask this as it might achieve better results with 8-bit Sony cameras like the a7C.
@@geraldundone Which has better low noise potential, Slog2 or Slog3? Does the maximum value of video output not matter? Slog3 only has 94 while slog2 has 106. I am shooting with a Sony a7iv.
Did you wonder why HLG 709 looks bad? HLG is not genuinely backwards compatible to 709. The inclusion of the gamma/colorspace combination of HLG and 709 should be a head scratcher, not taken for granted. Do you know why it's there?
How the FUCK can someone come to a comprehensive 49-minute technical breakdown video and leave a dislike like that. What's there to dislike, seriously?
