Tried to best explain these recording formats in simple terms without being too technical. Which recording format do you plan on using out of these 3 options for your project? Thanks so much! I look at it as if you know what you’re talking about you should be able to explain it in the simplest & to the point terms. The technical terms & etc is good to know but not necessary.
The fact you said the names of the formats without getting tongue twisted was impressive enough. Thank you for explaining this in very clear detail. Looking forward to learning as much as I can as I enter the videography world. Photography was hard enough...😂
One of the best explanations I've found on these recording formats... it would be good for other reviewers to use real world examples like you to explain technical information, especially for newbie filmmakers!
Thanks so much for the comment! I think thats where a lot of upcoming people trying to teach things slip up is thinking they have to use the biggest words & technical information. When really the best way to show you know your info is to be able to relay it in the simplest of terms for the most novice beginner/filmmaker. I used to have this same problem until I looked at it from a viewers pov.
I'm a newbie and have watched several videos for this camera. You put everything into laymen's terms and used real-life scenarios that made sense. Clear explanation, to the point, detailed enough, and very informative. Thank you so much!
Wow. Great breakdown of the options. Thank You. (Wish I had watched this 6 months ago, lol. Gonna switch from the XAVC S 4K to the XAVC S-I 4K and see what it looks like.)
Your opinion matches mine. A downside with the XAVC-S i, is the recording time. a 64 GB SD memory card gives 10 minutes and the 160 GB CFexpress Type A, only 15 minutes. Your video is the best I've seen on this subject.
That’s dope! I’ll have to test this but I think the 160gb goes longer than 15 mins in 24FPS. I filmed this video in the SI option & the total recording time before I cut this video down in post was 30-45 mins. I’m filming another tube video tomorrow discussing s-cinetone so I’ll test this out & let you know.
congratulations on the video!!! Man, thank you very much, I was having a lot of problems editing my events, and I believe it was because I was filming in h.265. Premiere can't run smoothly when I put the files from my 3 cameras into multicam. and when creating proxy's it takes forever. This is delaying my delivery flow to my customers. I'll try to use it in H.264 and come back here to let you know if it's improved, blz
Thanks for the explanation. Just had my first shoot using XAVC S. Easy to edit in 24p, but using S&Q at 120fps, it was a real bear on my MacBook Pro (latest model). Any advice on how to shoot slow motion and keep file manageable? Thanks 🙏
Dude you crushed this video ! This is by far best video out explaining all these file formats. I'm a canon user wanting to switch to the A7siii but couldn't find any videos that made sense. On that note does anyone know if there is a ef adapter that works for video on the A7siii ? Thats the only thing holding me back. Thanks and this badass video just earned another subscriber.
Is there any way to see how many minutes left for recording video ? I mean ,if i had 128gb sd card and shoot at xavc s i 10bit 422 at 25fps for example, can i see at display how many minutes i have for recording???? (xavcs i recordable time)
I noticed that XAVC HS has two 4:2:2 options. I kinda wanna shoot the 100M 4:2:2 instead of 200M 4:2:2 as the file sizes are very different. Do you know if there's a massive difference? I assume the lowest will still be better than 8bit?
I have a Midtier iMac 2019 with 64 GB ram and have to Make Proxies of everything I use, BlackMagic Sony or whatever, other wise editing is a nightmare... I usually just makes proxies and let it make them all night. Much easier working in Proxies no matter what. Until I get a New Mac with M1 or M1x chip, Proxies it is.
I've been shooting in xavc s 422 10 bit and let me tell you, the playback is choppy as hell in davinci and my computer is a beast in terms of specs I've seen the choppiness more while I edit slog3 files
Gotta find what works best for you. Try switching over to XAVC-si . Regular XAVC is the worst quality out of all 3 options so if it’s causing lag as well go to XAVC-si which is meant for better editing experience anyways
@@JoeMooreProductions true, trying to find the perfect balance. One more thing I've noticed is you cannot playback XAVC S slog3 files without an editing software as compared to XAVC HS, you can easily playback in any media player which supports h.265 codec
I would say invest in the higher spaced memory card & shoot in XAVC-si. And yea I noticed that too. Kind of a bummer when you want to quickly view files without opening up the editing software
Don’t know if you watched my review or not but I listed how & why the codec I use is the best quality codec. XAVC HS is a h.265 compression which comes in second place of best quality. The BEST less compressed & biggest file size quality is the XAVC-SI. 😁
Great information! For now I am using an external Ninja Assasin to record, this way I have a good monitor and cheaper media for the best quality recording, I have a question, if I am recording simultaniously in a sd card in XAVC S and externally with my Atom, will it affect the quality of the external recorder or will the compresion be independant for the sd and the ssd, thanks for your time!
I’m not quite sure on the recording from the camera into the external recorder. If I’m not mistaken, the ninja assassin is one of the external recorders that would allow the a7s iii to be able to record in RAW format. If it is, I would record in that format as it giving you the best lossless quality. I think whatever you’re recording on the external IS seperate from the SD card. Kind of like how you couldn’t record RAW on the SD but you can on an external.
@@JoeMooreProductions thanks for your help, the Ninja Assasin unfortunately doesn´t accept raw, but I find it more flexible and easier to edit with Adobe Premiere, greetings from Peru!
@@flyingdroneinperu3681 Ahhh ok good to know. Even if it doesn't record raw. It's an external recorder so whatever you have set up on the external recorder to outsource to that memory card is what the format will be.
