Another informative video, Mike! I struggle with using back button focus. My eyes are old and using the back of my screen, especially in bright sun is hard. I simply have a hard time seeing the subject. Back button focusing is analogous to me using my iPhone for photos. I take better photos using the eye piece and view finder.

hi thanks for the video. just wanted to mention that you can also assign the af/mf toggle to any of the other custom buttons... which means you dont have to take the extra step of switching the ael button up and down as well as pressing the button to toggle. only need to press the custom button

Great channel Michael! Here's an issue I encountered when using the 'Bracket Pro' app: when attempting to use back button focusing in Bracket Pro, upon hitting back button the app gives error 'Function Disabled'. Am I correct in assuming this app does not support back button focusing? I guess it's not a big deal - the apps seem like they're aimed more at the consumer market rather than professional users. It's an interesting detail though. Cheers. (I should add that this was using the A7ii).

I think this setup is flawed. With regard to setting AEL to "AF On." This is basically single shot focus. True back button focus is setting AEL to AF-C, but the A7ii doesn't have that. Which is odd since the A6000 does. The whole benefit of AF-C with AEL is so that you can track action and shoot as you track, and just as quickly go from action to shooting a still frame, but quickly pressing AEL and letting go (focus is locked), press shutter, done. Using AEL really offers no better benefit than using the shutter button. Do this. Hold AEL while focusing on something random...keep AEL held, then walk over to something else and look in the LCD or EVF and you'll see the new object is not in focus. Now, set focus from single shot to AF-C and try the same exercise...boom. AEL is using AF-C and you can pan the camera with everything staying in focus, or an object moving while you track it with AEL held, and while AEL held, press the shutter button. Perfect in focus picture. And without doing anything different, you can instantly take a portrait without having to put the camera back in AF-S (single shot). Just hit the AEL on the subject in the portrait, now do let go of AEL and hit shutter...perfect portrait, in focus. That's true Back button focus (at least for me). I just don't see AF-S on AEL being of any use, and might as well use the half way press focus/shutter button. Is my logic off?

Hey bro, quick question - I'm using an a7sii and the sel2470gm emount for my camera on zoom (ran through a cam link). I've also got a sm7b mic which the a7 auto focuses to. How do I set the focus to get me and not the mic while using autofocus. Is is possible or do I need to manual focus.

Can you still have back button focus along with eye detection focusing? Seems like you would have to press two back buttons at the same time to achieve that.

Hi Michael. Thanks to this video, I'm able to back button focus on my A7Sii. Thanks! I have another focusing questions. I have the Sony FE 2.8 24-70 GM on my A7Sii, but the autofocus will not work in continuous mode. The camera just searches for the focus point and no green focus lights illuminate. My only option is to shoot in Single-Shot AF, keeping the focus area in the center. Can you explain how to fix this? All my firmware is up to date. Sony's recommendation to reset the camera is not working... Thanks!

Awesome video, I'm a dentist and shoot still photography with a Canon DSLR of my procedures. I would love to start shooting these procedures with video. We have excellent lighting. What setup would you recommend for this?

Thanks for the video. I just got my a7sii yesterday along with a metabones smart adapter. However, when I slap a canon lens on with it and try to focus while taking a picture, it hunts a lot. The a7rii seems like it's much much faster. The a7sii focuses back, then front; then back and finally locks on. I've tried to find places online to find out if this is expected with the a7sii in particular, but can't find anything. Please let me know your experiences! Thanks :)

Back focus doesn't work as explained.. When the focus is set to the back button, it only focuses on the center of the image, not where the focus spot has been set. To see this, just go to 1:13 of this video and look at the image playback after the shot was taken. It's totally out of focus. There is currently no remedy for this. Hopefully in a firmware update soon.
