By the time the 7d iii is released we will be talking about the a9 iv. LoL

7d Mark ii had its first preview only 3 years ago. Not exactly old. Also, it's tough to compare 20mp crop with full frame, lots of points need to be made to fully understand the comparison. The advantage of crop vs noise has a battle..I'd estimate around 2000 ISO or so.

i have the EXACT same dilemma as you. heavily invested in canon lenses w/ the 5D4 -- clearly not a wildlife/birding camera. but dont' want to dump $6.5K on a new Sony system either...

Nice review and your issues are understandable, given you short time with the a9. I'm primarily a wildlife shooter and I'm now past 10,000-shots with my a9. The ability to track behind a tree or reed has very much to do with how you've set Tracking Sensitivity. If you've set it on 5, the highest level, it'll immediately move to a closer subject in the frame. On 3, there's a delay and I've been able to track birds in flight behind reeds and trees and have the eye stay in focus, all the way through. As for the sleep button, I have mine set for 5-minutes and you can either make sure the camera stays awake when you're around potential subjects, and/or, get in the habit of hitting the shutter button as you're raising the camera to your face. It's a muscle-memory thing that's easily learned. I own the Canon 5D MkIV/EF 100-400mm Series II and the Sony a9/G Master 100-400mm and it's NOT EVEN CLOSE. My Sony blows away my Canon for bird-in-flight and other wildlife shooting. One of my very first shots, using the G Master lens was a young buck jumping a fence. It's not fast action, but 22 out of 22 shots had sharp, in-focus eye. I also shot at ISO 10,000, with nice clean results, after applying NR in RAW conversion.

EXACTLY! He didn't know how to set the camera. ALL of his issues were related to unfamiliarity with the camera... which is ONLY a design problem IF you think the Sony A9 is a CANON CAMERA.

You are not comparing apples with apples. The Canon 5D MkIV is not an action / wildlife camera. The Sony A9 is promoted as a high speed action camera. Better would be to compare the Sony A9 with something like a Nikon D850 or a Nikon D5. Both of them kill the Sony A9 in terms of Autofocus. The 20fps with electronic shutter on the Sony A9 means actually not a lot as in case you go with flash you have to use the mechanical shutter what means 5fps only left. And some wildlife or action require flash. So the Sony A9 is for me useless.

I havent tried the G master yet but I use a canon fit Sigma 150-600c with an MC-11 adaptor on my A7iii and its like a completely new lens. Superb in every way.

@@Stefan1968ful 20 fps with flash? Are you serious. I think you are likely to distress most wildlife with a 10fps burst let alone a 20fps one. As for the D850, hardly comparable. Mirrored 11 fps with a battery booster and massive files to process. More comparable to the A7III The A9 will give you non-blackout, zero rolling shutter at 20fps, so you can track without any interuption. Dont get me wrong, the D850 is a great camera but cant say its up there with the A9. 5dmkiv shoots 8fps which is enough for most wildlife.

@@drewdaviesphotography6515 I think you don't get my point. Flash on the Sony A9 you can use with mechanical shutter only what brings you down to lousy 5fps. That is completely inadequate and from 2012. I would also not dare to compare any Sony camera to the Nikon D850. Because with the 46MP you have really an excellent tool for Wildlife. With a Nikkor 600mm 4.0 FL or Nikkor 800mm 5.6 FL (sorry, not availanle for Sony :)) you can fill the frame with your subject. And that gives you a level of details which is simply stellar. I tried intensively the Sony A9, no, this is not a tool I would purchase for our Portfolio in case you want to do work professionally. Especially the non-availability of long telephoto lenses at this point in time is simply a no-go (and please forget the 400mm 2.8 GM, this is a nice try but for most of the Wildlife, especially birding, not long enough). Stupid wise Sony has also no professional APS-C camera in the portfolio for Wildlife (what Nikon has with the D500 and soon also Canon with the 7D Mark III) - even MFT has more to offer here.

Appreciate your honest review. Sony is definitely a different brand that takes getting used to. That sleep mode thing is something you get used to flicking the on-off switch like press a safety off - there's a way of keeping the camera prepared. But, yeah, when I first came over to Sony - and others who have tried Sony - have found it to be a learning curve coming from Canon or Nikon. I think it's easy to make a rave review of gear but it's also good to make a real experience review. Thanks for your effort.

Now that the 7D mk iii is out the window what did you decide? I had the 7D mk ii and ended up getting a great buy on a used 1DX mkii. No regrets while the Mirrorless systems develop...

try to upgrade the firmware to 2.0, it increase a lot of the flexile sport intelligence also go to the AF2 page select AF Track Sens then change the value to (1 Locked on) it tells the system to calm down and don't change the focus to any new objects immediately , the higher the value, the more sensitive it will focus on the object that it hit the focus spot

Interesting review, I enjoyed your "level headed" evaluation based on specific needs/wants. Given your investment in Canon gear, and the cost of switching, I can understand why you remain 'on the fence'. On the focus tracking point - did you discover the AF tracking sensitivity setting (Cam1 5/13)? When set to 1, it sticks to a locked subject like glue. Set to 5, it quickly switches to new subjects coming into view. The default setting is 3, which behaves about how you described - tracks pretty well, but will jump to other items from time to time. Oh, and the EV dial on my A9 was a bit stiff to start with too but it loosened up after a couple of weeks and has remained 'just right' since. Cheers.

Steve Beats thanks for watching. I did mess with the af sensitivity, I turned it to 4 or 5, which now makes sense why the focus shifted. If that the was case, the focus tracking is outstanding, which I thought it was anyways. I can't stress enough how amazing it is. The ev was just a little minor thing. I'll have to wait to see what cannon does, sony really made a great sports/wildlife camera for its first time. I don't like talking on camera, it showed, my drone videos are much better

Forget all this Sony crap. It’s a toy camera system simply. Every time I take out my Canon 1DX Mark II I know why I am not any longer on Sony and sold all this toy gear parts.

I currently shoot Canon so I'm no Sony fan boy by any means. But it sounds as if you wasted a lot of money and you're bitter about it. It's perhaps always wise to rent or borrow the gear first, especially such a steep investment!
