Due to the amount of testing and filming required, our full review including measurements & final rating of the Sony A90J will come in a separate video at a later date. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Will you also answer the question if the A90J is using the evo panel? Before you made an assumption based on energy efficiency, but a definite proof would be awesome. Great video btw. Will probably buy either the G1 or A90J once you have reviewed and or compared the two.
Thanks for the review. I was surprised that the A90J doesn’t use the new evo panel like the lg g1. Do you know if the Panasonic JZ2000/1500 uses the new evo panel?
So, thank you Vincent. I bought A8 last year on best reduced price in my country, few months ago, ordered CX, but change my mind during the night because of the that evening premiere of your Best TV of 2020 (Shootout) and Sony's second place and I'm not playing games, anyway, so far. I was litlle surprised in this video that you did not compare any pro and cons of a "new" operating system or Android vs. Google TV. Also, the only negativity, real one, that botered me on this tv is often problems, at least in my case, with playing movies on Sony Media player via usb or sometimes having problem to start some app, like Netflix. VLC is much better in that regard, but often look different or I have, maybe in my mind, problem that VLC player is dimmer in comparison. I even have HBO GO only on my mobile phone and casting it on tv, because HBO app was one app more and more problems for operating system. Has anybody else here having some problems of that Android based eco system and is it better on new Google TV? And, you did not mention the big difference in the price and is it worth it, almost double in my case for 65" model. I mean in between, let say Black Friday prices and this new one for brand new model. I hope that you will mention some of this points in final rating video of A90J. Btw., thank you again for your splendid job. Best in biz in my humble opinion. Did you see that Q maniac video off him "returning" A90J? :)
Hi Vincent, do you have any clue why the bass response is deeper than last year's models on your review sample and was apparently worse in the review of RTINGS?
Quality of your videos is crazy good. Knowing how much time and effort it takes to setup all of the things to work properly (especially all by yourself) makes me respect you, impressive job Vincent!
@@paulrakis it is a shame that the A90J is so pricey. I'm planning to go for the A80J myself, but the G1/C1 both seem like strong values too. Lots of contenders this year!

I've been saying for months now the A8H is a beast! Very underrated and fantastic for gaming! I love it and grabbed the A8H for 1799.00 on sale for the 65' . A steal!✌
You are the best, truly professional and trustworthy.I truly love your impartiality! You judge not by brand but with facts! Thanks again for being genuine ♡
A90J already lost it ... Sony spoiled the chance of really making a difference vs G1 by using only an aluminium SHEET instead of a plate as Panasonic. Apart from that ... no DTM ... and not all ports are full bandwidth which is just cheap and not what you should expect in 2021. At least Sony finally caught up on Dolby Vision ... for the very first time now in 2021.
@@marcuscole8796 LG fanboy stop being bitter your lies are all over You Tube both A80J and A90J use Evo unlike C1 uses 2020 panel and only G1 uses Evo you have buy C2 in 2022 for Evo
Panasonic has super nice picture quality. Even their LCDs look better to me. And they are recommand over all other TV brands in terms of the panel (they check them probably and only take the best) and processing. However, last years Model had frame Drops with 24p content which was a no go for me.
This years tv line up is mostly disappointing. Sony a90j is clearly overhyped. For the g1 it will be the same. Some small improvements. But lg oled bring a good value for a decent price. I have very strong hopes for the panasonic tvs. The will still have a much better panel and if better gaming features are on board...well this i a must buy for me.
As someone looking to upgrade from an LG B7A, Panasonic's 2021 OLED lineup caught my eye. However, being a US resident, we don't get Panasonic TV's anymore, and the odds of the 2021 models coming to the US is slim to none, especially in a large enough supply that would make them easy to get.
@@vintageretro2348 Yes, would have been nice to get the 77" size option. I'm looking a TV to my bedroom and 65" is the largest that can fit in the available space, so not having larger sizes isn't a problem for me now.
The price difference is insane, especially with some A8Hs on clearance now. I just ordered a 65" A8H new from best buy for $2k CAD, same price as a 55" A80j which was also on sale, $500 cheaper than the 65" A80j. A90j price difference is absurd, literally $3k more for the same size, I could buy 2.5 A8H 65", or both a A8H and A80j with $500 to spare for ONE A90j!
I was deciding between the A8H and the A80J, I ended uo buying the 55" A8H for $1098.00 dollars on Amazon Prime Lighting Deal, the 55" A80J was also on discount for $1689.00 but honestly I dont really care about having 2.1 because I use my TV for playing Campaign Mode with the highest visuals so if you turn on Ray Tracing say goodbye to your 120hz, based on this I went for the A8H also most games will just run at 4k @60hz, going to 120hz will downgrade the image a little, if you really want to play competitive videogames for example Call Of Duty use a monitor instead, also I heard that the new XR technology on Sony is just marketing they say X1 still works amazingly.
Wow you went backwards to buy a TV never done that but if that’s what makes you happy and works for you that’s good. I’m getting theA90j because I want the 83 inch the larger size and I want the best picture quality TV on the market
Thank you vicent. I give you a hard time in the comments but I want to clear in saying you are the best tv reviewer on youtube period! Thanks for the content I have been anxiously waiting.
Can you please do the A90J vs A80J side by side comparison. Please please? I already bought the A80J but i wanna see how the A90J compares side by side
if algorithm is done like as on xdr pro display, it will remain a shelf! Sony has the best backlight algorithm, Vincent himself says it.. Edit : mini led is only about a backlighting, nothing els ..
When is your A90J fully review coming out Vincent? Crampton called me yesterday to say its arrived in the store. But i wanted to hear your feedback first.
I don’t get what people are confused about. Vincent clearly states The A90J improves in almost every category. Brighter, better motion, better upscaling, better near black handling with less noise/posterization, better color gradation, better sound. He clearly states each improvement after saying it’s a substantial upgrade. I don’t understand what’s the confusion. ALMOST on par means lagging behind. 2nd place is the first loser. Idk in what world second place is better than 1st.
people are expecting f...g miracle 🤣if someone has last years oled than they can find it hard to upgrade but if somone is coming out of 15year old bravia like myself than it is no brainier,I will go for 83” version and simply enjoy it until we see next big jump in technology
So far the Sony A90J is just awesome. Especially how it displays shadow details clear and smooth and black levels and the crisp clean blacks you can see what’s going on in the shadows in black scenes a lot better than any other TV I have ever owned including LG‘s TVs and Samsung pitiful TVs I bought the 83 inch A90J and looking to buy the 55 inch series for my gaming on the PS5. The little nitpicking issues mr. Vincent point out but neglected pointing out the issues of the old Sony TV he was comparing that you need a calibrated camera to pick up on has no bearings or hindrance on the picture quality it is first class I’m telling you I can’t wait to get rid of this LGCX for the Sony a 90 J

Great comparison. Looks like Sony did a tremendous job at actually improving their lineup, only being limited by the venetian blind effect. Which we have LG to blame for of course. Wondering if panasonic finds a way to hide the faint horizontal lines.
@@Jackp2003 no it doesn’t you will not even see it there are some people like Mr. Vincent Nick Peak at certain brands of televisions just to make a video and get ratings
Nice so it's an improvements in almost all areas except for 2 I would say that's a good win espeiclaly considering how close irs been all these past years so these improvements are good and it's nice to see the brightness is noticeable I actual content against the a8h
it better be an improvement given you can buy 2.5 A8H 65 inch for the price of 1 A90J 65 inch here in Canada lol. I went with the A8H and couldn't be happier.
@@reviewforthetube6485 the A80J was still 600 more than my A8H and I don't even have a console, I have a beast gaming pc for that with a 165hz gaming monitor. New consoles can't even do 4k 120hz without shitty quality lol
Congratulations on a comprehensive comparison of two TVs that undoubtedly are already or will be popular. On price though it is a little like comparing a Ferrari to a Jaguar both excellent but one costs substantially more than the other for good reason. The conclusion for me though is that the A8H delivers very well for the 1/3 of the price of the A90. I don’t think Sony are using the LG evo panel instead opting for a bigger heat sink and more aggressive peak luminance control the power usage looks to similar and not the 20% power saving as declared by LG. The picture processing looks again to be a triumph and it is splendid that Sony were able to eek out a little more picture quality though maybe not in the shadows but perhaps that could be fixed . The display lead Dolby Vision processing would be a nice upgrade if possible for the previous generation though I doubt Sony will be so magnanimous to the predecessors of the A90. Overall interesting comparison though I think it flatters the A8H more then the A90. G1 comparison will test the metal of Sony’s A90. A Panasonic showdown between the JZ2000 would also be welcome. You have missed out one of the very nice features of the A90 the black lit remote is very convenient when watching in the dark. Also the Google TV OS is highly versatile. Perhaps a comparison of the OS of the TVs could be another subject for a video. After all a great picture is nice but content is king.
I have both the LG bx55 and my a90j just arrived. I was perfectly fine with how the bx55 looked until I put it side by side with the sony. Boy it was pretty HUGE difference.. The colors just popped more and biggest shock was actually the sharpness. It made my LG bx looked like it was running sub4k/1440pish content when in fact both were playing 4k. The finer details you get on the a90j are insane.
I'd never recommend buying the B series, because the BX is extreme low in brightness and much dimmer than the CX ... 227nits less ... or 454nits vs 681nits. Means: it is no surprise the BX - which is a last year entry level OLED, Sony isn't even offering - performs noticeably inferior to the latest Sony flagship model. Regarding sharpness: first deactivate Overscan on the BX ... but what will stay is the lower performing video chip of the BX. Bottom line ... it is no surprise the flagship model - with more than double the price - performs better than an entry level tv. I'd understand if you'd complain about the A90J being only as good as the cheap BX ... but hey: the correct comparison for the A90J is the G1 ... and not a last year entry level model !
I don't understand why people or any reviewers don't mention the current 48" OLEDs on the market are not really good for PC use due to the really bad pink and cyan colour tinting on white backgrounds when sitting close to these TVs (3ft-4ft) on a desk caused by the anti-reflective coating? The tinting moves with your view. It's very similar to the VA "cone" effect.
The Matrix scene with white background looks brighter on A8 to me :o Also, why does the A90J have different spectral distribution, but it ain't using the Evo panel? :o Third thing- the comparison ain't captured in HDR :-( :'(
Considering the price difference the A8H is superior. The A90J is washing out details in certain dark scenes. Unacceptable. Add to that the new feet are hideous. The A8H just has a cleaner/classier look. Also, rtings.com found the opposite results of Vincent when it comes to audio quality of the A90J. They found more compression and more distortion at high volume levels. Considering the A90J is $1000 more for the same size A8H it's clear to me and any sane person that the A8H is superior.
It's not superior XR Processor is better than X1 Ultimate A80J and A90J are both brighter watch review again very little problems with A90J only comes out of black bit harshly.
Great video, and rather glowing review of the A90J, thanks Vincent ! Makes me all the more excited for my A90J that will be arriving this weekend :) Now if only Sony can release the VRR patch and well, we've got ourselves a nearly perfect TV! Has there been any further updates since that scandal filled sony support video back in early March where they ended up blurring back out the footnotes of it "coming winter 2021" ?
I bought an A9S last year. I will replace it when a *z2000-like Oled will be available in that size…or a bigger one if I move out. The A90J was overhyped, sure there is an improvement but too small in the hdr brightness area…and actually a step-down compared to last year Panasonic ! The rest might be « substantial » for an analytical perspective but probably nothing for a casual viewer (sharpness etc. have been great since a long time even on midrange TVs)
Hi Vincent! Quick question: is the grid issue visible from normal viewing distances, or is it something you have to go and look for. Tx for all your great video’s!
Can you please do a video exploring Calmans new 'Aurora color engine' update to their calibration software? They say it's their biggest update since AutoCAL itself, and can 'reduce or eliminate banding and posterisation'.
Hi Vincent. And first of all , thanks for excellent review, I really like your style of doing those. Are you going to share your preferred setting to rest of us ? It would be very useful and kind.
Vincent great review as usual !! You made me get the A1E when it came out, I was thinking about upgrading but after this review... should I wait the next gen? Thx
Top work Vincent. Been eagerly awaiting this one. I have the A90J on order, and glad to hear it’s a substantial upgrade over the a8h. Can I get your take on the few negatives though that you found from initial testing please? Could they be fixed with a firmware update to the tv or is it hardware issue? 1. Artefacts appearing from white subpixel activation 2. The noticeable loss of gradation in particular scenes 3. Lack of support for white balance control below 5 percent. 4. Venetian blind effect Many thanks! Your response would be much appreciated.
No worries the dark seeing or shadows that he was referring to is not in his shoes when you see it yourself you would be glad that you would be able to see in this dark shadows versus LG and some of the other TVs that crushes dog areas I have the Sony and it is amazing when it comes to details in dark shadows in fact it also upscales poorly made videos even poorly made 4K videos but it also shows you how poorly made a lot of TV shows TV movies in 4K movies are made when it comes to displaying dark scenes
LOL. its far off. an WRGB OLED with dominating blue spectra energy and light leak for colors can never compete with an RGB OLED. colors are not that pure and strong. plus the visual whitebalance is skewed as we sees it thanks to that blue energy. the white subpixel is also causing changes to the whitebalance depending on how much it is used. if you want pure colors you need an RGB panel and one without color filters. when OLED can display an true 6500K whitebalance on real content i will get one but thats not going to happend with the WRGB models. picture on current OLED is too green/blueish as it is now. you must have noticed it..if you have working eyes?
@@thebossnocompetition8757 Something is missing, I noticed the moment I pluged a real good CRT with rgb. Everything looks how it should be. What was surprising was that gave me detail in color that only could see in HDR in a modern display (oled). At the end the quality of light produced by an Crt should be better, also the materials used like glass can't compete with pcb finishings in qleds/oleds screens. Perfect Motion resolution without lag, no need to scale ... etc. The point is modern displays look good, specially in 4k HDR, but we are constraint by the tech behind, and when humanity has to replace an old tech, always the decision is made by costs and no by quality.

Do you have the final tests ready any time soon for the A90j? We are not so interested in PS5/Xbox X gaming performance since they are not available for most of us in the area we are living in (small island in Pacific Ocean... PS4 Pro is still top of the line here...). We are mainly focused on picture quality at the present time since we will get fiber internet (finally!!!) and have access to 4K blue-ray. It seems some reviewers mentioned that the A90j is better overall than the G1 Evo for picture quality and sharpness, and specular highlights are only rivaled (and maybe surpassed) by Panasonic (Panasonic is 40% more expensive than Sony in our area). Is it true? Do you have similar feedbacks? We are looking forward to you review of the A90j to make our purchase (6 months delivery time for our area due to covid) as we have been following up your reviews for many years now. We will not consider LG, although cheeper here, and surely a very good value point for some, as we had very bad experience when living China with the E8 (Tcon problem that has been replaced under guaranty, then mother board replaced as OS not working under guaranty, then 2 HDMI not working while out of guaranty... that is why we switched to Sony A8F following your review. So far so good, good quality image and NO hardware failures!!!!. However Dolby Vision is quite dark on this set and we would like to purchase another TV for our living room. Knowing that the A90j is taking care of the Dolby vision natively in house, we are very interested about the results. Could you also add the topic "reliability" in your reviews in the future? I think this topic is more important than Gaming for most of us that do not have access to latest high end gaming systems.... It is nice to have a perfect quality gaming or picture quality set, but if the reliability in not following, it does not make sense to purchase it, as we usually buy for 5 to 10 years now (our oldest TV still working is a Sony from 2007 - first 1080p sold in China). Thank you again for all your quality videos! Keep it up and don't loose the nice 2nd to 3rd meaning quotes that we love so much ;-). Take care and stay away from Covid. Hope to see you very soon again on RU-vid!!!
Difference is very minimal to the untrained eye. Think i will go with the Sony A80J 65" and save myself 2k here in Canada instead of going for the 65" A90J.
I grabbed the 65" A8H last week on sale at bb for $2k in Canada, same price as the A80J 55", 600 less than the 65" and 3 grand less than the 65" A90J lol
Doesn't the spectral distribution prove the A90J is using the more efficient panel? The power consumption just shows that the A90J is driving the panel harder compared to other models using the more efficient panel which they can do due to the heat sink.
@@Mensy2011 I made one at home, and the 80J is a little bit brighter when Peak Luminance is on Medium, but most important is that 80J handles dark sceenes way,way better than the A8H.Skin looks more natural on 80J also.Comparison made with both tv's on Custom, out of the box !
So would I be correct, by making the assumption. Unless you need the latest and greatest, you won’t be disappointed in the A8 or A9g, which I just bought yesterday:-))
Good Video, as usual. But let me ask what i was asking myself always: Why you dont dont put the tvs exactly in one line instead of angling them? Furthermore why not spending 1 more min and bringing them to the same hight?
I think it might be due to the lense on the camera and the size of the room controlling how far back from the TV he can get. Lenses distort flat optical fields.
Would something like a Lumagen processor benefit in providing further adjustment to try to address the over brightening of near black and less-than-smooth gradation in near black?

Although some may not be interested in it, PC performance should be addressed in these comparisons especially now that these OLED TVs are marketed as PC gaming monitors as well.
Yes, I don't understand why people don't mention the current 48" OLEDs on the market are not really fit for PC use due to the really bad pink and cyan colour tinting on white backgrounds when sitting close to these TVs (3ft-4ft) on a desk caused by the anti-reflective coating.
@@theblackswordsman9951 Yes, could be that. Maybe Vincent was mistaken and the observed color difference between the TVs isn't due to the different color spectrum of the panel itself - but is caused by different driving balance of the WRGB pixels.

Thanks a lot MR.Vincent for taking my request.XR cognitive upscaling seems minor upgrade compared to X1 Ultimate as most the users are not pixel peepers. Also FALD x95J ,X90J tv's will even narrower the gap due to similar Panel compared to newer panel used in Oleds.
You must’ve had gotten confused which picture is which, because the picture that I’m looking at on the left, which is labeled the Sony A8H has the overall better picture quality, more brighter more detail so, what are you looking at?
Vincent, I'm a little disappointed Sony hasn't addressed the issue with external sources and DV. Is this more due to the players currently available or the TV? I seem to recall a video you posted about the 900H receiving TV-led DV? Is this not something that would be possible on the A8H?
This always was a hardware issue on Sony sets ... so, no ... a software update on the A8H is not possible. Apart from that a X900H owner told me the DV firmware update didn't improve/change the DV performance of his tv, although (in theory) the X900H should now be capable of decoding DV content.
@@marcuscole8796 That's interesting if true. I just came across this info from Stacey Spears which seems to indicate it's a player issue and not display issue. forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=318227&page=17
I have been saying this for a while. Panasonic for the last couple of years have had the best overall picture quality of any consumer OLED television.
