The external charging plate is there to help keep the device waterproof. The previous version had a sealed door but if you didn't close it properly water could get in, at least this way they get less warranty calls. The remote does support up to 5 cameras connected at once. To do so you need to change modes, the default mode the camera is a wifi hotspot and your phone connects to the camera. When you switch to multicam mode the remote or phone acts as a hotspot and the cameras connect to the remote/phone. You can also turn on/off all connected cameras at the same time, it does this over bluetooth LE so range is less of an issue. The remote is actually compatible with lots other Sony products, you could even use it as a selfie screen on an A7S. And don't forget to install the latest firmware on both the cameras and the remote as there has been some recent updates.
I mean the range is stupid good... it's not designed to be used as some sort of long range view - it's made to be strapped to your wrist, with the camera strapped to your head, and you be able to look at your wrist and make sure your helmet cam (or bike cam or whatever mounting nearby) can be centered/adjusted to see what you want instead of 1/3 your view as helmet or too far up on the bike where you can't even see a tire. By this I mean the range is meant to be about 3 feet, the fact you can connect at longer ranges, doesn't mean it was designed for it, if you want that - you should get a good Transmitter and Receiver - like the ones they use for POV drone flights with huge ranges.
thanks for this review. i was thinkingof this cam for mounting on a ski helmet. A real pain with subzero temperatures and using a mobile app to check if your helmet mount is actually angled correctly. So the remote view would be pretty useful IMO; instead of fiddling with a phone in deep snow or a harsh environment
Yeah to GoPro mic is sensitive when in the frame. Use it without it for less handling noise, and pay attention to where you place you fingers in relation to the mic’s.
I’ve nearly retired this camera. I rarely use it but the Sony BOSS system still great. Especially in lower light the hypersmooth/rocksteady is competitors falls apart.
The Sony Live View Remote is a POS since I got it a few years ago. Only works occasionally when it wants to. Plus the Sony AS300 camera menu settings icons are a nightmare to interpret, the manual is no help at all. The only thing that is good is the camera lens and optical stabilization.
I was actually just recently looking at this or within the same line, and one of the user reviews said almost the same thing, that if you had the phone app, just stick with that.
Yeah, the remote seems like it would be useful, but in reality I found just using the phone app to be a better experience. Both have limitations and issues, but the premium for the remote kit is not worth it IMO.
Great honesty video. It is completely truth. Live remote is waste of money. I have compared both in live remote and my smartphone. Sometimes by connection ability is way better on smartphone view by using app. If you have money to spend get sony mini tripod with remote rec and photo
In my opinion, the only action cam worth it is the Hero 7 Black. I have an older Sony HDR-AS100V but that is pretty much my helmet camera for motorcycle rides.
The 2016 Sony Action Cameras have that optical + sensor stabilization that works even in low light where GoPro hypersmooth falls apart once it starts to get dusky. Pros and cons to each, which I plan on showing more of in the future. Thanks for watching Omar!
Sounds like a good idea but kind of a bummer seeing it in action. The watch looks way too big. Gotta love ghostbusters! Guess the phone is the way to go.
Yeah, also with the phone and Sony cameras, one big downside I've also discovered with Sony HD format is you can't transfer those clips to your phone, or use it directly on social media. With the GoPro I can transfer videos from the camera to the app and tag/edit and post them quick and easy. The Sony action cams can be set to MP4 which should allow sharing, but the quality is worse so I don't use it.
