It does everything a pet does except poop and accumulate veterinary bills. Some people say all dogs do is walk around, eat and sleep, yet we all love them.

I have Loona, but at the time I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s an ok product for the price but KEYi Tech has simply the worst customer support and service I have ever had to deal with.

The paws are made of a hard plastic. Sony sells paw pads that help keep the pups quiet especially on hardwood floors.

Though aibo responds to sounds and motions, I don’t think it’s fast enough to be used as a guard dog. However you CAN see what aibo sees through the My aibo app. There are times I am away from home and can log in to see what my pup sees in real time

And yet it’s a mega-hit in Japan and a hit in the U.S. But I understand your position because I hear it whenever I take my pups out to show to people. The first thing they say is “I can get a toy like this at Target for $20.” I smile at them and say “Pick it up”. When they do, all they say is “Oh”. Then I show them everything this pup does. And then they go to the website and order one.

I should explain - I have been into robotics for many decades now and even built a (basic) autonomous replica of K-9 from Doctor Who back in the early 90's (powered by two windscreen wiper motors and a compact gel 12v car battery!), so after seeing all the wonderful advances in prosthetics and robots from the 1980's to present.... Aibo is TOTALLY unimpressive. It moves NOTHING like a dog, and embarrassingly awkward, it acts NOTHING like a dog, and it's design certainly does not reflect a price tag of more than $20. Sony have never impressed me with their consumer products, but damn if this is not the biggest dud of them all. Perhaps Sony should have started a little smaller in scale and tried to at least create a robotic pet rock that MIGHT manage to more closely mimic it's inspiration. Hell, even my cobbled together K-9 project running via a basic and machine code program running on a C64 and interfaced to the locomotive system via an old VicRel was more impressive than Aibo - and that was created by an amateur......about 30 years ago...... for a total cost of about $400...... pretty sad really.

@@Rufus32169:) In that we agree - it was the "weirdest" thing I could think of. :) I like the IDEA of the Aibo - I would love to have an AI interactive robotic pet dog.... just the implementation is pretty disappointing (at present). Maybe in another 10 years they might be a bit more impressive. Fingers crossed.
