In this video I describe my first experience with the Sony Bravia Theater Bar 9 with the SW5 subwoofer, RS5 rears, and Bravia X90L TV. The new Sony soundbar was launched with the 2024 Bravia 7 TV, but it also works great with the Sony 2023 TVs as well.

The sound adjustment on the sub and rears goes from -10 to Max. The remote should have had a rear control button. The voice mode on a 4k disc with atmos when on Dolby virtualizer mode turns it into a 7.1 which sounds clearer and fuller. Dolby atmos with sound mode on a disc sounds like you’re in a tunnel. Unless you live in an apt I would recommend getting the sub and rears. Best sound system I’ve owned.

Most discs are 7.1 with Atmos encoded on top, you have to use 360 Spatial Mapping to get the Atmos effects to work. Dolby Virtualizer is broken with Atmos, it overemphasises the height channels and places sounds in the wrong area of the room. 360 Spatial Mapping sounds like a tunnel because the whole point of Atmos is object and sound placement, the 360 Spatial Mapping is the most accurate to a 7.1.2 setup. If someone is further from the camera the audio will sound more distant, that’s why it sounds like a tunnel. But it is how Atmos DSP works.

@@wellyboot I guess you have to adjust each time you want to watch something. I’ve also noticed that prime shows atmos in the app but Netflix shows lcpm 5.1 only even when it’s supposed to be atmos.

@@gallynuts my Netflix via my LG G2 shows Atmos. Sound field on, set to 360 spatial mapping. The Bar 8/9 have an issue with pass through, I assume it’s a bug but on AVForums/AVS people have set their TVs from pass through to auto and it has fixed their codec issues. You could use AAV to level the sound out and stop yourself from turning up and down but it adds gain to the channels (it makes the rears louder than they should be) and reduces the dynamic range. DRC is a better option for low volume listening and hearing everything.

Samsung s990d is way better than this the older Sony a7000 was better Sonos beam and arc better as well

Could you clarify what you mean!! I have the bar 8 and when watching a 4k disc with dolby atmos, if I turn off the sound field it then down mixes to dolby audio.

The only issue i have so far with this soundbar is very high pitched diaglogue at times and harsh S sounds. I think its more of a directv source issue though. I have not been able to find a setting to rid of this

Nice video if we had the money I would consider the sound bar. But I am happy with my Sony xf9000 soundbar ( in the US it's called the x9000f) a good sound bar Atmos and DTSX and can go very loud especially when you're using the Sony picture core app on my Sony x94j..

When you tune the bass volume down to 0 , does that cut down the bass on the subwoofer and built in bass speakers on the bar or just the sub. I was hoping to hear more about the all in one performance of the bar's built in bass and virtual surrounds without the optional external speakers. Ive been holding out to see what Sonos is going to do with it Beam Gen 3. Im looking for a good all-in-one with good bass and surround performance (expected to be released later this year)

I bought the sony a7000 last year with rs5 and sw5. So should I upgrade the sound bar. Is it worth it.

i did the same thing last year and WOW that setup is AWESOME...... from what i am seeing, i'm not sure there is anything major you gain, think as in bang for the buck. size seems smaller, and i guess if you want/need another setup go for it, but i view this as like going from an iphone14promax to the 15promax.... mmmeeehhhhh not worth the bang for the buck... The 7000 is pretty bad a$$, but i'm sure this is a slight step up i'm not sure if i will upgrade to this..... if you didn't have the 7000 i'm thinking.... HECK yeah.....

@DDDD-of3hv thanks man for the advice. BTW what are your reviews on the ht a7000. I do have it but I am not able to get all out of it because of my room dimensions. The 360 audio mapping is not good for my room. I have to manually change the speaker settings. That's why I want to know your thoughts and experiences.

@@NewStuffTV1 yeah man it’s a good one. It’s just extremely loud and it goes like from quiet to like 1000 out of nowhere so be aware you might jump the first time. 😂 Or fumble the remote trying to lower it

Returned mine. The dialogue was not loud enough and everything else was too loud. I had to adjust the sound all the time.

That’s mostly the source, not the sound bar. 😂 It’s been an issue for years, most noticeable since Blu-Ray and lossless audio became popular.

@@zozoMontana because they use EQ’s to manipulate the sound and increase the volume of the centre channel. Quite often with a 7.1.2 system I’ve had to increase the db of the centre channel due to difficult to hear dialogue vs effects from the other speakers or us DRC. DRC is included in some of the high end sound bars, the Bar 9 has it as an optional on or off. If you compress the dynamic range makes lower volume objects easier to hear like dialogue at lower volumes.

If you have a Sony tv, forget Sonos. Just get Sony. I have the theatre bar 8 and A95k and am about to receive delivery of the rs5 and sw5. If you have a Samsung tv you should get the Samsung stuff. The software ecosystem matters a lot

Its a cheaply built shitty looking cloth piece of shit without a proper remote or digital readout. And operating basic functions is done on a phone in the middle of watching movies…LMAO. Dont care what it sounds like, Sony aught to be ashamed of bringing out this trash speaker to replace its big beautiful A7000. Bought a new A7000 on clearance when I learned of this disaster

It’s a sound bar, the object of which is to sound good and funnily enough the Bar 9 sounds better than the A series. It has a far greater soundstage and the revised 360 Spatial Mapping is very impressive.

the 7000 is pretty bada$$..... i'm not sure this is a great bang for the buck upgrade, sure i'm sure if you tune it, its gonna be a little better... but is the bang for the buck there? there's some other more expensive systems i have my eye on, but i love Sony's integration....

@@DDDD-of3hv The Bar 9 is considerably better than the A7000 for spatialness, the side firing drivers make a noticeable difference. The LFE is also better a standalone bar. 360 Spatial Mapping v2 is also better and you no longer need the RS5s to use it. With RS5s and a sub, it's a superb home theatre experience. The A7000 now is a far better product than it was when it first launched.
