Take a look at this Sony CRF-5100 Earth Orbiter radio, hear it run through some of the bands, check out the controls and features, and take a look at the internal chassis to learn about a major issue I've discovered with this unit that may affect one you own or may be considering purchasing.
For you tech-minded folks, let me know your thoughts on resolving the mechanical issue, in case you have a solution or thoughts on addressing it apart from a full replacement of the parts or making replacement parts myself.
Overall I love the radio despite owning it only a day. But in that time, I've partially disassembled it, performed troubleshooting on an issue, and put it back together. I enjoyed listening to Coast to Coast AM with George Noory last night and expect this radio will serve me well as long as I choose to own it. Thanks for checking my video out and let me know if you have any questions.

What is SSB BFO? Image result for BFO control ssb The beat frequency oscillator (BFO) is used for CW and SSB reception. The oscillator generates a signal which is mixed with the output of the IF amplifier in the detector to produce an AM signal that can then be demodulated by the detector.

Thanks, Carlos! Occasionally I've run across links to pages that no longer exist and thought this might serve as a good resource for anyone already here.

What can I hear on SSB radio? SSB (Single Sideband) is an obscure but very important way to communicate via radio. It is used primarily for two-way voice communication by ham radio operators, aircraft and air traffic control (ATC), ships at sea, military and spy networks. Occasionally some shortwave broadcast stations use this format.

In the 1970s I had a Grundig Yacht Boy (lovely radio but no BFO) and I used to wonder what these strange Donald Duck noises I sometimes heard were. Later, I had a Sony ICF 5100 and then I understood!

Great video, and I hope you can find those gears... I was a Sony authorized tech for a number of years in the 80s and 90s, and I'd say you have a chance of ordering new ones from a Sony parts distributor that's been around since then. Sony, unlike a lot of others, never cleaned out old inventory of parts, so it's worth a shot. You could try Andrews Electronics in CA, as they've been around since the 1950s, once you have the part numbers. I just got a brand new in the box CRF-5100, and of course it has dried out electrolytics from sitting. I haven't tried to get the board off yet, I will once I get a hard copy of the manual.

What is the difference between SSB and CB radio? CB service operates on 40 shared channels in an AM mode or Single SideBand (SSB) mode. SSB offers less noise and greater range than AM mode and is usually found on higher end CB radios. SSB has two modes, Upper Sideband and Lower Sideband. You can only communicate with other SSB CB radios when in SSB mode.

How much do you want to sell it for ? In regards to the tuning gear bases, do you have a 3D Printer ? There's a couple of guys who have the schem/diag of those flat gear bases and you can easily print them yourself. OR if you'd like to see it have a marvellous new home i'll buy it from you. If you dont want to sell it , use Google and find what you need to fix it all correctly and ready the online PDF manual so you know what the knobs are for instead of using the side band tune as a Dj funkatronic, lol. They are cool radios but that one looks pretty rough inside with all the rust you can see it's been exposed to bad conditions. Good Luck. Oh, there is a model one under that that looks identical and theres several parts units on Ebay for well under $100. I think its the CRF4050 or CRF5050 and internal skeleton is identical
