Was just about to buy a teleconverter x2 for my 70-200mm f2.8 II but still shoot with the sony a7R3. I am so glad I have searched and found your video where you explain that you don't even recommend the x1.4 TC for the A7R3 body. So thank you so much.

It will function, but it won't work well in continuous shooting. You will have better luck in single shot mode. Understand also, that the 2x will not have the same image quality as the 1.4x. I have not done an official review of the 2x but I suspect I will be doing one in the next year.

@MatthewCuda thank you for coming back to me. So I use the 70-200 for sports (also landsacpe) but I feel that X1.4 wouldn't be long enough as ut would give me 280mm only. I was originally thinking getting rid of my 100-400 and just have the 70-200 with a teleconverter. What are your views?

Great Vid, just what I needed to know, I am now shooting mainly birds in the UK and my combo of the A9 and the 200-600 is the perfect setup for me. I use it in apsc mode mostly but am thinking on this teleconverter for smaller species, as I came from m/43 Olympus and miss the extreme magnification of that sensor size. Keep up the good work...Regards.

Hello, thank you for the video, which version of 7r3 are you using, 2017 or 2021? The 2017 version also had AF problems.

Both versions have AF problems. I was using the first gen, but my brother has the second gen and same results. I don't own it anymore.

Fantastic video. So, 200-600 w/ 1.4TC and APS-C mode turned on my A7IV would yield 630-1260? Is that correct? Just got the 200-600 and I’m trying to get closer shots of birds that will fill up frame instead of me cropping in PP. I’ve been on the fence about the TC but this is moving me off the fence, hope to pick one up soon. Again, fantastic video, well done, thank you.

Thanks for your kind words! I believe the effective focal length would be 420-1260. I use mine quite a bit with my a9. Yeah, the new 1.4x teleconverters don't have much image degradation at all. However, you may find you have to crank up the ISO to compensate, and that can mean some detail loss in the image from using that higher ISO. It really is a game of balances to get the shot and maintain as much detail in the image as possible. That is my opinion of course.

i am just wondering when you use 1.4x with fe200-600 should use tripod or can it be handheld shooting? If handheld for 840mm, the image will be very blur or not?

I use it almost exclusively hand held. As with all hand held shooting, you have to keep the shutter speed high. I can shoot stationary subjects, with full OSS, handheld, at about 1/500th of a second. This is all very subjective as it depends on how well you can hold the rig to start with. Most of the time I keep the shutter speed at around 1/1000 just to be safe under those conditions. When shooting flight, you have to use the appropriate shutter speed for the subject. Typically, that is around 1/3200.

It is my understanding that it should work fine both in single shot and in continuous shooting. It is on Sony's list of supported bodies. From a practical perspective, I have not used it with the A7R IV. Most likely I will be reviewing the a7R IV soon though.

Good review, I already have the 1.4x but wanted to see someone else's opinion. I feel some people get a T.C. and increase the shutter speed to compensate for the longer focal length, then increase the ISO heaps due to the loss of light from apature and shutter. This is a set up for disaster in my opinion, you should be doing the opposite and lowering the shutter speed to compensate for the loss of light to get the benefits from the T.C. You pretty much covered this in your video anyway and you use the T.C. how I would use it, and pack it away if the light is weak.

Thanks for watching! It really depends on the situation. If you need a certain shutter speed, then you don't have any other option but to raise your ISO. However, if you can lower the ISO then the image quality will go up. It all depends on the speed of the subject and what you are going for. You might even be able to do some artistic blurs of birds in flight, for example, at lower ISOs. Yep, sometimes, the 1.4x just isn't worth the image quality loss. Totally agree. It is just part of the game :) This is where the f4 lenses come into play.

Are you talking about using a Sigma lens with a sony teleconverter? If so, the answer is no. But, if you are asking if Sigma makes lenses for Sony, then the answer is yes.

I have an even older body; the a7rII. So on your a7rIII, it tends to hunt, then?

I wouldn't call it traditional hunting. If you have it in AF-C, it will just sit there and lock and then jitter. If you are going to use it, I would suggest trying it on AF-S. It is definitely not going to function like it would on the cameras that are designed for action and lower light. It will miss shots if you use it in AF-C.

No, that is not normal. It could be something minor broke off inside or it could be a loose element. Either way, it is not a good thing and can affect focus of your image and overall quality.

It will work but not well. You can use it with stationary subjects, but it will not track for flight. The camera needs to have the ability to use AF-C at f9 well.

I have used it on the alpha 1 fairly extensively and it works great!
