thanks for the review! im struggling on finding a good 35 for my a7iii, im leaning to sony as its better for video, which is what i need. but it just does not blow me away at all, especially at that price. the sigma is nice but as usual, sony cripples other brands lenses when it comes to continuous autofocus

Its cool how you blended the music to image at about 7:50. These are the little things that add add value to your presentations. I got the f1.8 50mm, not sure i'll add this since I am very happy with my f2.8 24-70mm. Fantastic review as usual Jay!

i read reviews that Samyang lenses are not durable. Easily broken down with no particular reason. Is this true in the real world?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 6 месяцев назад
I don't have any Samyang lenses, but I have not had any of my lenses fail in the real world ever. I have a lot of lenses including Viltrox, Sigma, Sony, Tamron, TTArtisans, 7Artisans...

What is the point of a weather sealant when the connector to the body isn't sealed at all? This for me is a real disappointment because I like shooting in the rain.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 6 месяцев назад
All I can say is it's better than nothing at all and it will still help with dust and moisture... If you wan to shoot in the rain I highly recommend a camera rain coat which are very affordable...

I love this lens! I had the Samyang 35 1.4 > Sigma 35 1.4 > Sony FE 35 1.8 its so great and compact. I don't miss the weight, size or 1.4. (The Sigma is a big fat heavy pig that gave me a wrist ache hand holding it for 2 hour portrait session. That's because its an old DSLR lens with built-in adapter not made for mirrorless. I do think it's over priced, but was able to purchase it for $650 new.

Vignetting is the biggest issue with this lens. However I still shoot with it all the time. I would say testing CA on a cloudy day is not the best time to test it. Almost every lens will have significant CA on those small areas. The thing is few people shoot landscapes on cloudy days. I guess one could but how boring would those images be?

Jay my good man: Wake Up! The shot of the river from the bridge; in Lightroom, you decide to “Enable Profile Correction “. Do you not realize that, as noted at the bottom on the “Lens Corrections” panel, a “built in lens profile” has ALREADY been applied? Thus, you are applying a lens correction profile to a lens correction profile. This automatic profile is applied within your camera, where, if you so choose, you can actually turn it off. Then, you can manually apply this correction.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 2 года назад
Hmmm, that is very interesting... When I click on the built-In Lens Profile notification it says the profile has been applied to fix Chromatic Aberrations. So that was set to Auto on the camera in the Lens Comp Area, but I had the other stuff turned off. So in my case It did not fix the distortion of Vignetting until I enable the Profile in Lightroom... So the profile in Lightroom did the rest of the lens compensation. I appreciate you pointing this out and I will certainly pay more attention in the future!

@@Jason_Hermann : Hi again Jason. In re-reading my initial note to you, my wife suggested that I came across rather “strongly”. Usually, I find my wife is right and thus I’m offering you an apology for sounding so “alpha”. I really wasn’t thinking about my ego, at least I hope not🤔, but just wanted to correct this Lightroom error that I’m seeing more and more often. Sorry😔! BTW: When you click on the Lens profile notification in LR and you get the message stating that your in-camera settings did NOT fix the vignetting, that means that in your camera settings, you have specified only to correct for the other possible corrections but not the vignetting. You will probably want to enable all of these corrections in your Sony camera and will thus never need to do the additional corrections manually in LR. Happy Shooting

Thanks for your review. I have an a6600 and was thinking of buying the sony 35m f1.8 OSS lens. Would I notice a big difference in results (photo) using this fe lens? I shoot raw and use Capture One. I appreciate the price difference but that is not a major concern.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
This FE 35mm lens would produce better quality results on the crop factor camera than the E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Lens. However, you would lose OSS and gain a significant amount of size and weight.

Does the f1.4 version really need to be so much bigger and heavier? The purpose of mirrorless camera was to keep things light and compact ....thats why the only GM lens i own is the 24 F1.4
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
Hi John and yes apparently it does need to be that big and heavy unfortunately. Perhaps Sony, Sigma, or Tamron will come out with a more compact f/1.4 version at some point, but for now that is what we have for 35mm...

I notice that most of the shots are pretty close up. This lens is not recommended for its wide angle capabilities?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
Hi Arthur, a 35mm lens can be used for whatever you want. I tried to use it for a nice variety of situations so you would have an idea on what it is capable of in the real world and lab. Due to the corona situation I was not really able to get out for more wider angle landscape shots as normal. So, I mostly exploited the depth of field play you can get with this lens on a full frame camera body which resulted in a lot of close-ups to your point.

Thanks a lot Jay! Wonderful review, I liked it so much. I have a question and I was hoping to get your opinion, I'm buying my first lens, I'm can't decide on buying the Sony FE 35mm f1.8, the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8 (the one you mentioned), or the Sigma 35mm f1.8 (the one you mentioned also). I will be shooting cooking videos with a few macro shots or as close as possible, I have the Sony A7iii, the price of the three lenses are not a problem for me, but I can't go more expensive, the lens you reviewed in this video is currently discounted at 559EUR! I would appreciate if you give me your opinion. Thanks.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
Hi Kareem, I would go with Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Lens. WIth the A7III you can shoot in 4k and crop in on the video to get closer if you need to, and the f/1.4 will give you the option to have amazing background separation and depth of field play.

Is it natural for internal elements of this lens to move without it being powered? I just received it the other day and I can feel internal lens elements shift forward and backward and that makes me nervous. I have many, many lenses. None of them shift weight. So is this normal for this lens?

@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
Hi Mark and thanks for the comments! The A7C looks like an awesome new camera for sure and the FE 35mm f/1.8 lens would certainly be an excellent option in my opinion. The 28mm f/2 is also a good lens and significantly more affordable, but it does suffer from more distortion and is not as sharp or contrasty if that matters to you? Great review, the Sigma 35mm f1.4 is definitely much sharper than the Sony 35mm f1.8 but size and weight are it's main selling piont but I'm also a little disappointed with the Sony 35mm f1.8 it's not cheap and for the price it's not that sharp at f1.8 I've been using since it's release and sometimes in terms of real world use it's not that sharp at all, yes it has bad purple fringing but OK it can fixed in post but lack of sharpness can't so at times I would rather carry the extra weight with the Sigma and get better results, I took the Sony 35mm f1.8 to Disney world for 3 weeks as my main lens and i got to say alot of the image's are not that sharp compared to the Sigma or zeiss 35mm f2.8 even the samyang 35mm f2.8!

Yes it would be an improvement for the 35mm range for sure. although I might consider the FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA lens (amzn.to/2Cja849) also... I mean since you already have the 16-35mm range... If 35mm is your ideal focal length than yeah this would be a great option!

I’m confused …you said that a higher f stop lens had a slower aperture …isn’t shutter speed separate from lens opening and wouldn’t a larger opening at the same F stop be slower, while letting more light onto the sensor? It seems to me that a lower F stop wold perform better under low light.
