Your low light tests are the best on YT. I was considering zv-e10, a7c and fx30, but after this video I'm debating a7c in aps-c mode vs zv-e10. I was expecting better results from fx30 in low light. It seems it's hard to cheat physics and full frame is still much better.
Just curious, why would you use the a7c in aps-c mode, because of your existing lenses? I've done a bunch of testing myself and, like he says in the video the full-frame is just so good. Aps-c can't really touch it in lower light. Light equals color right? *Chants* full-frame full-frame!
@@thesahdstudio Yep, I have 3 aps-c lenses and plan to expand. They are much cheaper, much lighter, usualy have less focus breathing (especialy f1.4 variants). I don't care about hi-res photos or bokhe. My main concern is video performance. There are 3 cons I can think of: 1. can't punch further in 4k. 2. Bigger noise grain 3. slightly less sharp image because of not downsampling.
@@thisvideoisgreat4289 Out of curiosity what IS the biggest reason stopping you from going full-frame? It seems you like the smaller size/weight, do you do mostly handheld? I just jumped from the A6400 to the A7iv recently and, while it'll take me time to get to where I was lens-wise, I am super happy I made the jump. Plus I was able to sell/buy used so it wasn't as big of a gap as I was worried about.
@@thesahdstudio It's mostly about money. Second reason is weight and size. Sony 11 1.8, viltrox 23 1.4, sigma 56 1.4 will cost me about $1200 and 721g. Full frame equivalent lenses are at least x2 cost and x2,5 weight. I don't see value in FF lenses, as I mentioned I don't care about more bokhe. There are compeling reason for me to buy FF body especialy smallest a7c and pairing it with aps-c lenses feels like good compromise.
DUDE! This is BY FAR, the best no nonsense low light review on the most consumer/pro-sumer, friendly Sony cameras I've seen yet. I work in the party and nightlife industry, and I have to do photos & video at the highest possible level to stay ahead of the competition. This is the most practical and meaningful review I've seen thus far. Your testing methodology is brilliant for people who film and photograph in ACTUAL low light. Good work.
ah yes that reminds me, party and nightlife industry I was wondering who will ever use that much low light ability outside of filmmakers and night street prhotographers then there's you keep up the good work there buddy
I bought a ZV-E10 a month ago and hadn't gotten a chance to do anything with low light. It honestly held up better than I thought it would. Very interesting.
unfortunetely I don't always need new gear so I don't get to watch these videos very often. BUT when I do, it is such a pleasure. This channel is just my favorite of all. Funny, witty, excellent advice and straight to the point. Thank you!
I just want to say thank you for your awesome videos and sharing your entertaining personality! You have really helped me in my decision to buy The ZV-e10 as my first camera, finally upgrading from my iPhone 13 Pro Max after a year. I'm losing being able to shoot 10 bit via Filmic Pro's Log V3 for better color grading. But the quality of the entire package and building out a rig similar to Lil Dougie for my more professional setup is going to do wonders for my small production. Eventually I want to upgrade to the A7s III/A7 IV or the FX cinema line. One day. Your subscriber count does not match the quality of work you put in. But I'm sure us that do subscribe and follow you really appreciate everything that you do!
Nice comparison! I am impressed from the fx30s results! Although i already knew that Sonys apsc cameras are really good, but the fx30 raised the bar a little bit!
Mark you are super funny. I come to watch you even though I don’t need a camera right now. You should do another channel where you just talk about other stuff.
Although I just discovered your channel, I have to admit that it is one of the best comparisons I have ever watched on YT.. I own a sony a7iii and as a hybrid shooter I will go with the a7IV. Amazing results in still images and equally very good results in shooting video. Of course I suscribed!!!!!
When you reduced the lights, you should have kept the exposure constant instead of auto and letting the a74 ride into extended iso. That way we could compare the noise.
I have another video tomorrow where I do that, but the way I do this test is the best way to see how they do in lowlight because you see how the cameras react under the same lighting. ISO’s are not absolute and vary from camera to camera. But in the test coming, you will see that the fx30 is noisier at every iso than the A7iv. Noticeably so. It’s a great camera, but lowlight is not its strength,
thanks for this review! you have saved me from getting the fx30 as my bcam. the a74 is really incredible camera despite of its lacking in 4k120 and cropped 4k60, but boy mine always impress me everytime i use it. 80% of the time i film indoor with no extra artificial lights, but just whatever is available and very often i shoot at 12800 iso and the video is still amazing! i guess im gonna save up a little bit more and get the fx3.
In fact, in the 50% to 100% light range I even slightly prefer the fx30 to the a7iv. Realistically, I won't shoot above 12800 iso, so the fx30 looks like a better option since it's cheaper, has lighter lenses and less rolling shutter. The Zv-1 is pretty good in terms of noise, but the colors don't look good in low light. Also, it would be interesting to see the zv-1 in this comparison as I usually like the colors on it better than the zv e-10.
Wow, the low light of the A7IV really is on another level. Was all of the Slog footage graded? Great video and comparison. I think little Dougie did very well against its big brother. To the point I though the 3x more expensive FX30 should have done more
It was just the standard conversion LUT for S-LOG3 footage. No grading. The FX30 won't be much better than the ZV-E10 because they are both APS-C sensors and the ZV-E10 is pretty dang good in lowlight.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis With an all new sensor, new processor, low light could have been improved possibly. Kind how all full frame sensors aren’t equal as some are way better at low light. Was hoping the FX30 would be a bit better. Not full frame but maybe bridging that gap more. Does seem more standard APSC performance which isn’t bad. But still below any full frame performance when indoor or low light. Love your videos and truly helpful.
Nice comparison Mark! I have to confess you made me curious about a comparison with each camera in the same ISO and WB, manual set, not auto. The zve10 handles pretty well side by side to the top of the line other cameras, I would like to see if in the same ISO is there a big difference still
I do it this way because iso is a bit different camera to camera, and this shows how the camera handles exposure. but since this has been requested a lot, I will do a followup videos and include the same lowlight tests but with matched ISO’s
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Awesome. Great video as always… I’m very impressive with Lil Dougie performance. Gonna do some PP off low light tests to see what I get… I got a little excited about it. And I will follow the other guys in regards of your channel quality/followers ratio. You should have many more. But I’m absolutely sure you’re get there soon. Thanks for one more great valeu video.
Hey Mark Thanks for Another amazing camera comparison. Though I still think you should of named it the Sony FX30 vs A7 IV vs ZV-E10 World Greatest Comparison 😂 Keep up the awesome work, looking forward to the next video.
I'm having a hard time debating on what to buy. My choice is between the FX 30 and A7 IV. I like taking pictures, but love video taping my kids, events, vlogging etc. What should I do? I do not want to buy both at this time. It's hard to decide. Thoughts?
The A7iv is the way to go. Amazing photo and video camera. The fx30 is really more suited for intense video work - documentaries, interviews, short films, long form content. The A7iv is much more versatile and in line for what you want.
The FX30 is bad in low light, it's not just the noise, but the noise profile that is not very aesthetic. Without noise reduction it's almost unusable at 2500 in SLOG, that's a bummer. I noticed the same with my FX30. I have an A7SIII and a6300 and the FX30 doesn't feel like much of a step up from the a6300 in terms of low light performance. The FX30 is pretty loaded in terms of features though, and being able to do 4K 30 and probably 60 indefinitely with that internal fan is really what sold me on it over the A7IV. I'm in too many situations, hot rooms, etc. where I need to record for hours at a time and I had an A7IV that kept overheating even with the internal shutoff temp set at high. Tired of rigging PC fans to record at 4K.
FF is the way to go if you are planning to film in low light routinely. Really surprised that the FX30 did not perform well. I wonder why they didn't put a 12MP APS-C sensor in it similar to the FX3? The real benefit of the FX30 is that you get a super rugged professional body with some cinema camera features at a bargain price. If you can find a way to properly light your scene, it's a winner!
Since the FX30 is marketed as a video camera, shouldn't it be doing quite a lot better in any situation than the others in the test? The ZV-E10 and A7 IV seem to do better in my opinion. I like the way the ZV-E10 handles itself. From all I've seen so far, there's no rush or need to exchange my ZV-E10 for anything else, especially not paired with a good Sigma lens.
the zv-e10 is great. the fx30 is designed for more pro videographers with features they need. Lowlight is not one of its strengths, but people buying this camera will generally be lighting their scenes well
So “Make Art Now” has a video where he created a PP for low light for the A7III. So using these settings with the ZVE10, against FX30 and A7III (or A7C)would be very interesting for another low light comparison. I mean regarding price range A7III/A7C and Fx30 are pretty close. I did expect Fx30 to hold better at low light (I expected it to have higher ISO values)
I addressed that in a video I did with the a7iii - but I really didn't notice any substantial increase in noise performance with Josh's profile vs standard. He basically tweaked the Cine2 profile. The thing to do is to expose a little brighter and crush the shadows - then it will look good. But in this test, I wanted it to be neutral.
Wow, what great (and fun) groupies of lenses! I'm really impressed that the Fuji lens was sharper than the Sigma 65 F2. I didn't think that would be possible. I wonder what will come next. As always, thank you very much for all your hard work Christopher!
Wow it's funny that the Dougie beats the triple priced fx30 both in low light and colors! Though auto WB would be the last thing to test on a video centric camera I think. Wiah you could set a constant Kelvin for all three. A7iv always looks yellowish to all the other cameras. That's a let down.
BTW I would appreciate it if you could test the FX30 slow motion video quality compared to A7 Iv and ZV-E10 and also it's own 240p to 120p and 60p in HD and 4K
in terms of light - both are 1.4. Depth of field changes - the blurriness of the background (1.4 * 1.5) = 2.1. the focal length of 16mm is 16 * 1.5) = 24mm. but the amount of light stays at 1.4 (the brightness of the image regardless of sensor size). clear as mud? 😀
As you know I got the ZV-e10 and the kit lens just to start shooting stuff. I then bought the Sigma 30mm f1.4. Someone crashed into my church at 2AM one Friday night and I got the call from the police first. So I grab my Jimmy(ZV-e10) with the 2 lens. I would say that the lighting was about 30% of daylight. The kit lens was not cutting it so I switched to the Sigma 30. Wow it looked so clear and clean it was like I was shooting at 5-6PM. What a fun little camera.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Yea it was 2AM, no one from the church was there and the driver was able to drive to a hamburger stand and was only caught because the airbag went off while they were in the drive-thru. I think the airbag was a little late :)
Hello Mark, first of all I thank you for all these videos that you make, they are the most complete and have helped me a lot in the last few months. I've decided I'm going to buy the FX30 but I'm new to cinegraphy, I've gained a lot of technical knowledge in the last few months, but I've never held a camera in my hand so I can't get a sense of how things work in practice, for example the field of a lens view, your videos helped me to understand in practice what I need to record a vlog or indoors (thanks again). The last doubt I have is in relation to the performance in low light since it is a considerable part of what I intend to shoot, I am considering the sigma 18-50 which seems to cover all the focal length I need, but the 2.8 aperture leaves me in doubt between this lens or the 1.4 trio, which is a bigger investment and more work because they are prime lenses. Since you have all this equipment, would it be possible for you to make a video comparing these four lenses on the FX30 in low light?
I can tell you that if you plan to shoot in lowlight, the primes will be the way to go. 1.4 is much brighter than 2.8. check out my video on the apsc lenses in lowlight. 8 have the sigma 16 1.4 and the Tamron is 11-20 in the video is a 2.8. so that will perform the same in lowlights as the sigma 18-50. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PyUw5JZrlug.html
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thank you Mark, it was what I was looking for. I don't know why I didn't find this video before, maybe putting it in the title "7 lenses side by side" will increase the audience's reach.
Hmm, seems like the A7IV is probably overall the better buy than the FX30...but I also need a camera for livestreaming, I always hear about the A7IV overheating issue so I dunno. HELP! lol, how serious is the A7IV overheating problem?
if you need a workhorse that runs for hours - get the fx30. yes, the A7iv is better in lowlight and a way better photo camera, but in decent light, they are indistinguishable. But I will say the A7iv doesn’t overheat easily. Streaming for a while though might do it. If you are primarily streaming, I’d get the fx30
New to this channel as well. All the way from South Africa. Love this! Just bought a Zv E10 after deciding very hard between the A7c and this. Budget decision. Looking into getting another lense though.
the ISO’s display differently in the cameras. ISO’s are not absolute, they vary from camera to camera. I find the best test is to put them in the same environments and see how the camera exposes.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thanks for clarification . although a test of incremental iso changes for each camera would of been good too like what would iso 6400 look in each camera . anyway this is the best iso low light test of fx30 so far and thanks you very much
I record video for my channel with my Samsung note 10+. And not so bad, but i research a lot what camera to buy in close future in first i was looking m50, but when i saw zv e10 it blows my mind. For that price is best bay, it will be perfect to have ibis but one gimbal all fix it. And i saw your chanel a lot about this camera so my next combination will be zv e10 +sigma 1,4 16-50 it is ok for vlog, studio and outside video. By the way, cool chanel, very informative and fun way. Best regards.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis can you make a video about your in camera settings? especially on your indoor studio, zv-e10, fx30 etc... like how you set the iso, aperture, shutter, wb, and much more 😋. i wanna learn how you prepare that stuff. thanks, hope it will be a great content for the next video 🎉
can you do a test between the fx30 and the a7iv in crop mode and their performance with clear image zoom? imo biggest advantage of fx30 is the ability to use cheaper aspc lenses and the extra reach it offers compared to full frame. considering fx30 has 20mp, while a7iv in crop is about 12mp? the fx30 should be more detailed in 1.5x CIZ. in real world situations it can be very useful to have the fx30 with a 28-75 and get similar reach to a full frame with 70-200 while retaining a sharp image
I know the ZV-E10 is the latest and greatest, but would love to see the a6000 series included in these. I'm expecting most people own one of those rather than the ZV.
I just did a lowlight test with the a6400 a few video ago. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6rP-0tnNyFU.html Also, the a6100, a6400 and a6600 have the exact same processor and sensor as the zv-e10. so the results will be very very similar
Great video thank you for that. I honestly thought the fx30 will be better in low light but after 2500 it's so freakin noisy, for me it seems noisier than my gh5s at similar ISO values which is surprising. Apart from the low light performance, it seems like a wonderful camera.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis … I didn’t thought you’ll answer mate … one question I have a Sony A7IV and I’m looking for a second camera and I haven’t decide between a fx30 or a lumix s5ii … what do you think ? Sony - Sony or Sony - Panasonic 🤔 ?
wouldn't it be fair to put the full frame (A7IV) on f/2 if you test APS-C (FX30 & ZV-E10) on f/1.4? Otherwise you're giving the FF sensor more light, thus obviously better performance.
same light hits the sensor at 1.4 on both cameras - but the APSC sensor is smaller. An f1.4 on aps-c is a measurement of light the same as an f1.4 on a full frame. So a full frame does gather more light - but that's simply because of surface area of the sensor. If you compare an image of a 1.4 lens on an aps-c camera to a 1.4 image on a full frame - they would look the same in terms of brightness - but they would have a different amount of perceived background separation because of the crop factor
Great comparison I recently did a lot of low light videos with my zv-e10 and they came out so good if you wanna check them out both my recent review videos have low light on them Ty again For pointing me to this amazing camera and congratulations on the grow of your channel you should have way more views and subs 😊
Amazing work as always, Mark. Do you thinks its worth a try to do another round with all cameras set to HLG because of noise levels? Have a freaking good evening (or morning, or whatever time it is on your side of the planet). Best from Germany
I’ve done a or of the modes in HLG for Sony and they’re never as good in extreme lowlight as standard profile. HLG will be pretty noisy (like slog) unless exposed properly
@@RinaJosscy that’s what I would do yes. You could always overexpose a little in Slog3 or HLG and then do some noise reduction in post. But when I’m out in the night I find ppoff looks great and has muscular less noise.
Just to be clear: if you compare all the cameras using the same lens, the low-light performance shown in this video will not change? Meaning you can save some money. Also meaning that the A7IV's superior low-light performance isn't because it's full frame if it's still superior when cropped.
full frame vs cropped is not the only factor in lowlight performance. The A7IV is better in lowlight than the FX30 or XV-E10 in full frame and in cropped with the same lenses. It has a better sensor. In crop mode it is closer, but it is still better. I have a video tomorrow that will show that.
You are really presentation skills are just awesome sir. you make us feel that cameras are like characters. i like when you say this little duggy to zve10 lol
What happens if you use an apsc lens on the a7iv? Are you still gonna have better low light performance than an apsc camera? or is it gonna be just like the fx30 since it's gonna use a small part of the sensor? I have an fx30, but I'm considering buying the a7iv because of the better low light performance, but have only apsc lenses
Question for you Mark. With winter hitting I'm doing a lot more filming in my garage (I do automotive content) with my zv-e10. I shoot in shutter priority. If I'm on a tripod I putt shutter at 60 and vlog I put shutter to 200. I've noticed in the garage though a lot of horizontal striations in the footage. It's worse at higher shutter and better at 60. Is there another setting I can adjust to help this?
the shutter speed is picking up the pulsing of your lights. because your garage is not using studio lights, you will see this at higher shutter speeds. it’s a form of rolling shutter that you will see. It’s not the camera, it’s the lights. You can try using different bulbs or incandescent ones. Also, try shooting at 24p at 50fps shutter. Here is a video Tony Northrup did ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u1AjSGF_FCI.html
Thank you for your low light comparison. I have purchased the little doggy a few weeks ago after watching your review. I was using a DJI Osmo plus gimbal camera for a couple of years. The quality of the videos is not quite as good as the ZV E10 and it takes sometimes up to a minute to start up. Also I need more than a 3x times zoom sometimes. I am missing the stability of my gimbal. I would like to know if the FX 30 has better stabilisation than the doggy. Could you do a comparison between the doggy and the FX 30. This would help me to make a decision to buy a gimbal or upgrade to th FX 30. I like the specs of the FX 30. Keep up the good work, you got my thumps up. One more thing. Have you run out of apple juice?
Now i've seen what the SD-card cost and videos what size you need SHOCKED me!!! MAX 35min of recording on 60 and 88min on 24fps get me thinking?!?! do i really need this 60/120fps. Should i go fullframe then? or go with the easy one ZV-E10. Are the cost the same with the A7IV type SD-cards? :P
The iPhone wins at low light!! When the lights were off, I did not see any noise on the iPhone. Ha Ha 🤣Ha 😂 I am still going to get the FX30. I just cannot say no to 4k 120fps specially when I cannot afford the FX3.
It’s an amazing camera. It has more noise in lowlight than the A7IV - but it’s completely useable and in good light it’s just as good. I bought it for the 4k120 myself!!
but which camera has more realistic video exposition? Sony always try to overexpose 1-2 stops in lowlight condition. May be iPhone is most realistic, or a7 IV?
The newer Sony’s seem to use less aggressive noise suppression. You can control the amount of noise reduction in post. The last generation cameras like the Xbox-e10 look a bit cleaner because of the in camera noise reduction - but the image will be a little less sharp
This is gonna be super random. Can you use a flash trigger on the hot shoe of the fx30? I am planning to buy this camera for video mainly, and for the clients that change mind at last minute and also wants some photos of their event, but just curious if it can be done.
So all of three cameras filmed 4k? I can`t get why fx30 is so noisy even in its second native ISO. ZV-E10 looks cleaner. Or did you turn off noise reduction on fx30?
@@don_tpanic6052 Sony uses more aggressive noise reduction in the zv-e10. On the newer cameras like the fx30 and a6700, they are opting for less noise reduction in camera. People generally prefer to do the noise reduction themselves so you can still have the most detail n your image, and noise reduce to taste instead of baking it in
I'm a little duggee my little zv-e10. Here i couldn't catch the meaning of this word. How do we spell. Than i may figure it out what it means. :) Sorry about asking such a weird question unrelated with your video...
The FX30 could have been better in low light with that new APSC sensor. That is possible - see apsc sensor Fuji XH2s equaling the Sony AIV in low light.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis FX30 seems set to underexpose -0.3ev. Maybe you'll get less noise if you overexpose +0.3 or +0.7, and then reduce in post, like when working with slog3. I think it's worth a try.
Weird question (or maybe not), which will have better noise performance, a7iv on 1080p or fx30 on 4k? Might be interesting for people who’ll want to record 60fps without a crop.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis wow that’s a quick response! Thanks a lot! For people like me who still has a 1080p monitor but is bothered a lot by low light noise, this is very helpful.
Picture profile OFF in low light. I'll have to give that a go. Many thanks. (EDIT: Although I would avoid auto white balance at all costs. It's never been known to be reliable or consistent.) (EDIT#2: I think the FX30 needs a firmware update to fix the Cine EI mode. It's not working as expected. I've started filming an episodic web series with my FX30 and knowing that filming with the Profile turned OFF makes for cleaner footage is a huge factor. We will shoot 4-5 episodes before releasing on RU-vid. More info to come.)
Hey, I’m no pro in this question, but don’t people use LOG profiles for high dynamic range? In low light the dynamic range is tiny and then what’s the point in log profile?
@@victor.ivanov this is actually a good question, and I think Parker Welbeck made an explanation how turning off log profile is better in low light. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q1lrcTHNMfE.html
i wonder if sony a7c with sony 35mm 1.8 will give me better results in low light than sony fx30 with sigma 30mm 1.4? at their lowest aperture 1.8 and 1.4 meaning a7c at 10000iso compares to fx30 at 6400iso
Haha nice try iPhone The performance of the FX 30 is not the best in low light but the price with those characteristics are really amazing, great video dude, few months watching your videos and btw where is the apple juice? Haha
