very nice. it seems like the R7 has better IBIS & much better photo capability. FX30 has better 60p and 120p and highlight roll off & rolling shutter. Other than that, very comparable, and both excellent cameras for the price. I think I'll stick with the R7 for the price, as I don't need the extra capabilities of the FX
What a quality and objective summary. Excellent comparison. For me the biggest take away is that buyers should consider what they already own in terms of a camera system which is a critical part of your discussion. If you are a long time Sony user, I would purchase Sony. If you are a long time Canon shooter, I would go Canon. Both of these companies are very competitive and are pushing the technology forward.
Great comparison Josh, you covered pretty much everything. Been waiting for this one, thanks! Both cameras are quite impressive at their respective prices. I got myself the R7 since in France it is 700 euros cheaper than the FX30 (body only), so I could invest in other type of gear as you said. Also, I do photography from time to time, so it seems like the better option at this moment. I wanna thank you for your content, especially about both of these two cameras, made it much easier for me!
Hey, I am planning to do the same. It's the same for the entire Europe. All Sony cameras are significantly more expensive, which I think makes the R7 the king in that price range. Are you satisfied with the R7 and what lenses do you use?
Thank you, I actually had the fx30 bought but returned it and got the R7. I was worried I made the wrong decision but now after watching this, it made me feel better about it. I do like the creamy look of the fx30
Isn't dual base ISO activated when you shoot in CineEI mode? Then you have option next to ISO that says Base ISO and that's when it changes to H in CineEI from L when you have 800 base ISO.
You can change base ISO manually in Cine EI mode, but not in Flexible ISO mode. Please check out the video that I made about this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JtaC7UcARr4.html
@@Josh_Sattin yeah that's what I meant that dual base ISO seems to work only in that mode, weird as it's same sensor just different mode but perhaps its the way that data is read from the sensor?
@@liscvideo Please go over to that video. I have answered this question several times in the comments. The camera should operate the same way in Flexible ISO as it does in Cine EI in terms of base ISOs in Slog3. In that video I also show that the camera does operate similarly in Cine EI and Flexible ISO at 800/2500. Please go check out the video.
Thanks for another great video. I own them both and they are both good in their own way. I am a photographer an just getting into video so the FX30 is my first cinema camera. I want to test the RAW video from the FX30 to see if it's worth it to shoot RAW. Thanks for all of the work you put into this video. Cheers.
Hi Josh, thank you for the video. You say you get “so much more” in the fx3 with the price difference. Actually Except for the full frame and better low light performance I don’t think you get that much more, for a difference of 2400€ (here in france and without the Xlr adapter). What do you mean by “so much more”. I mean I get that full frame is nice but is it worth paying almost 2500 € ??! If I compare it to the c70 which is super35 it’s super cheap🎉 (yes you don’t have built in nds).
Full frame does cost more and people do like it. That being said, people also love S35 and most movies are shot on S35. You also get full frame up to 4K120, less rolling shutter and that super high ISO peformance. The FX3 price also includes the XLR handle. Is it worth it? That depends on what you need/want. Everyone is different.
Love your videos! Been binge watching them 😂 I have been using an M50 for the last couple of years but I’m ready for an upgrade! Been looking at the R7 for filming my off-roading videos and hobby shooting at my sons soccer games. It seems like it would be a good fit eh? Looking at Sony and reading about Fuji but I don’t know!
Thank you so much! There are a lot of great options out there right now. We are very lucky to have so many options, but it can be overwhelming at the same time.
@@Josh_Sattin yea Josh, it is overwhelming. Ugh. I like the R7 and think it will do great for sports, but is it worth it for video? I hope someone comes out with some RF-S lenses at some point. Do you know if the autofocus is fast with an adapter and EF lenses? How would you compare the Sony A7iii? Maybe I need to rent for a little while 😂
@@Colorado4x4 If you go to my channel page it is organized by camera. There are lots of videos about the R7. Its pretty tough to beat the R7 for the price right now. The autofocus with EF lenses work the same as they would on an EF mount camera, but it varies depending on the lens performance.
Hi. A complete unrelated question. I bought my R5C but what ever I tried (CANON SOFTWARE) my PC Win10 64 is unable to see the XF files. I'm connecting via USB. Can anyone tell me how to safe my life??
I'm a Canon user, but I always preferer the Sony collors and texture... and all the lenses options such as Sigma 24mm 1.4 (omg, one of the best and cheapest lenses ever)... but when think about paying all that maybe it's better to go fullframe. I don't like the idea of paying too much on a video-only and aps-c camera... and because of all this I can't decide on buying and R7, or FX30 or spending a kidney and buy a A7IV
One of the best channels on cameras and probably my favorite one. I live in a place where FX30 (body only) comes at around 2350 USD. I also come from an 80D and have some EF lenses and batteries. The r7 is about 1400 USD here. Which one would you recommend to a person like me?
@@Josh_Sattin Hey, thanks for the reply. A kit lens and a nifty 50. I plan to use the camera for youtube (talking head shots, b-roll with slider, and just a little bit of broll in nature). If I get the R7, I'll listen to you and couple it with an adapter and the 18-35 Sigma. Actually, sometimes I think I should get the lens first. BTW, your channel really stands out by making these comparisons while actually helping people learn without getting too technical. It will be huge in the future, I am sure.
My other camera is a bmpcc, but I do need a smaller camera that has autofocus. And I don’t want to give up my bmpcc 4k yet(have a sigma18-35 EF and a Panasonic 30-100 M43). Which one do you think I should buy?
There is this RU-vidr Vu Nguyen // nVu Films who made video about FX30 "SONY FX30 - REAL WORLD WEDDING FILM - IS BASE 2,500 ISO TRASH?", where he basically referenced your video and said you are completely wrong about Sony not having dual iso, that you have stupid claims and dont know things.
@@Josh_Sattin I re-watched your video, but I'm still coming to the same conclusions. The FX 30 is not a camera for beginners. Even though it may not be ideal for run & gun situations or wedding videos, in a controlled environment, like filmmaking, music, videos, and documentaries, it may be a better choice than the FX3 because of the time code and focus breathing features. For less than the price of the FX3 I can purchase the quad channel dual XLR, audio handle, a ninja v to record 12 bit ProRes raw at 4.7K vs 4.2 on the FX3, a Metabones speedbooster, a focus pulling system and some 7Artisans cine lenses. I think the FX 30 will cannibalize the FX3 sales because you're getting almost the same camera for half the price. I camperson I would like to see is the c70 vs the FX30.
@@Josh_Sattin please tell me which one is needed for sigma 18-35,in site two types, Lens Mount: Sigma EF 1- Sigma EF 2- Sigma S.A. ? which one to choose in conjunction with the fx30
I'm stuck between FX30 and the Canon R8, which one would you recommend for the beginners from an All-in-one perspective for podcasting, videography and photography?
I don't think either of those camera will be great for everything you mentioned needing. The FX30 is a very solid video camera but is lacking in some photography features.
I thought you had a difficult time recommending the FX3 in another video over the FX30. In this video you say that the FX30 is an $1800 camera inferring that it's some how not as good and to keep your expectations realistic? The the $3900 FX3 camera is better because it's higher priced? The FX3 is an older camera and the FX30 is a newer camera. Maybe Sony will replace the FX3 cause it's extremely expensive for what you are getting vs the FX30. Cameras these days are so good that the differences are so negligible in terms of image quality.
