Sony FX30 vs Sony A7C

I don't want no camera that I could fit in my pocket, I want my camera looking beefy because the artist I get paid to shoot music videos for love it . I order the fx30 Saturday and it will be here today .

but also remember the apsc lenses are generally smaller, evening it out a little

absolutely- I mean you can use them with the A7C, but really they’re better suited for the FX30. This camera is going to open up pro video for a TON of people - especially with those lens choices

You can still use APS-C lenses with A7C. No real advantage there.

It really depends witch country you are. For me, APSC Sony lenses are just as expensive as FE. And to save money it’s easy to buy Viltrox Full Frame lenses at the same price as Sigma APSC. That’s why I think I’ll skip the FX30. 🤔🤔

Understandable. 10-bit is great.

In my opinion, Sony 18-105 F4 PZ OSS would be the best all around budget and Sony 10-20 F4 PZ would be perfect for talking to your camera. That's what I'm going for with the FX30.

Thanks for the kind words!! The gh5s is rated at 13.9ms for rolling shutter. I think the FX30 should be around the same. I still use my GH5 because I just love using it. But I must admit that it’s easier to film with that Sony autofocus. The Panasonics are more fun to use in my opinion - but I can’t argue with the results I get from my Sony’s

​@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thanks for your reply :) Yeah I've seen the specs for each on the rolling shutter, but from what I have seen the FX30 is still more slanted, for whatever reason. I am looking for a camera to film a puppet short film (Labyrinth/Dark Crystal Style) and this FX30 could be a great choice. I have typed this multiple times and included a link to some of my work but I guess the link causes the message to not post haha

A7C is fantastic for video. it’s better in some ways - great photos, great in lowlight, viewfinder, full frame for shallow depth of field - you can always sell it, but it’s an amazing camera.

What bothers me most about my ac7 is the shaky nature of the video, I shoot celebrity street interviews and am used to the stabilization of a camcorder. I don’t have time to edit stuff in post before publishing, since it’s news material, the videos need to be uploaded right after they are shot. I had a gimbal but I spent more time balancing it than filming in the field. I embarrassed myself a few times, mid interview the thing starts gyrating and camera falls from balance. Perhaps I should just get a camcorder, because the style of Video I shoot is very run and gun

something like an ax53 is great. great stability, great camcorder.

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis too small, looks like a tourists camcorder from 2005. Hollywood is superficial, I need something that looks beefier. Hence why I was lamenting the sexy body of the FX30

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I find that Steadyshot feature on a7c doesn’t do much, do you think that getting a lens with image stabilization would help? Or does it basically cancel do the same thing as Steadyshot since Steadyshot becomes disabled with a lens that has image stabilization

I would do the fx30. it won’t be quite as great in lowlight, but it’ll still be very good.

The FX30 is the way to go if you're going to do serious video work. If you want some photos, and you don't plane to colour grade, use log footage and you find yourself in really lowlight situations a lot - the A7C is good. But I will say the FX30 is such a great video camera to use.

if you do not use the 10-bit - the A7C will be a good fit. The zv-e10 will do the job as well at a much cheaper price, but the A7C will be better

The fx30 has 26 megapixels - but azi wouldn't recommend it for photography. It has no EVF, can only take one frame at time (no burst mode), and only has electronic shutter

you'll never get through that traffic so I'll be safe.

Yes I heard that - you'd think its only a matter of time before FCP get it.

The stability will be better on the FX30 for sure with the new active steady shot - but if you're using catalyst browse, the A7C will be smaller and lighter. But if you get the fx30 and the Sony 11mm 1.8 - that's not a big setup either.

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis according to other videos here the a7c also has active image stabilizer with a little crop ?! Also I’ve just recently seen a video review of said Sony 11mm apsc lens and the colors where horribly blue and dark compared to Sigma or Samyang lenses … i have been using Sony apcs cameras and lenses since 2012 and in my own experience Sony native lenses have great sharpness but tend to be darker and bluer. When I’ve worked in TV editing here in Norway I learned that most productions switched from Canon C300 cameras to Sony FS7 II but always with Canon lenses adopted to Sony EMount … so long story short as the Sony 11mm made faces look dark and blue i would much rather go with non-Sony lenses but I can’t find anything comparable from Sigma, Tampon or Samyang (only manual focus lenses) … as a professional I would like the FX30 as it could do both client work and vlogging with my wife but maybe the a7c (with latest firmware, codecs and log) is what I should save up to?

mechanical shutter is a physical shutter that closes over the sensor to block out the light. The electronic shutter is just the camera electronically blocking out the light. So electronic shutter will experience rolling shutter (the sensor reads out from top to bottom at a certain speed). So if a sensor reads out slow (bad rolling shutter) then you will see this when you take a picture. Images of race cars moving will be slanted for instance. Mechanical shutter down not depend on how fast the sensor reads out so you won't see rolling shutter.

I would do the A7iv if you want to shoot a lot of photos along with video

the sigma lenses focus just as well as the Sony. The autofocus test would be very boring because they all work flawlessly 🤣. I like the sigma trio for the fx30 -the 16, 30, and 56 - contemporary line. Best value lenses on the planet

I included the Sony autofocus in my little rant, but I FULLY agree that the s5 is the best value money can buy if you don’t need autofocus (which I mention on my channel a lot), but unfortunately for the s5, a lot of people these days rely on autofocus.

you can still get good footage out of an A7S ii, but the battery life and autofocus aren’t great and there’s no flip screen. The colours coming out of camera aren’t great either. but if you are behind the camera, manually focus, keep some spare batteries, and color grade yourself - it can work for sure. however, I would encourage you to look at the ZV-E10 for a budget option.

Probably won't be for at least a year - that's my guess looking at Sony's update schedule.

it will output as 12 bit really - as most things. but it starts as 16-bit linear raw.

Good to know - yeah - direct sunlight even kills my normally rock solid GH5. So the a7iv held up? That’s good news at least!!

in terms of Hybrid camera - the R7 is a much better photo camera. it is also a good video camera. But it doesn’t a lot of pro features like all-I codecs, 4k120 k 60 without a crop, raw output, good white balancing and more. Plus there are a ton of affordable Sony apsc lenses. So for video, I have to lean heavily to the FX30. if you want both photo and video, that a different story,

When you add in the extra wide angle APS-C lenses you will need to buy and carry around, it’s less of a good deal. I’m on the fence too. I’ve been looking for a used FX3 and they are selling for nearly as much as a new one. I wish they’d sell it without the damn xlr handle so I can save some $$. Can’t go wrong either way I suppose.

@@RandumbTech I think I decided on the fx30. Lenses are smaller I can buy it new and there is not too much difference to the fx3 I guess. It’s a bit lighter and I do prefer to have the ability to shoot 26mp photos

From what I have seen the image quality is almost the same (which is very important to me)

it’s a great deal. You won’t be disappointed with the fx30

it does not work on any lens that is not an autofocus lens

That’s tough. Probably the R7 for pro work because of the 10-bit, better photo specs and two card slots. But the Sony has way more lens options currently

Saturday Sony electronics had a deal where you could buy the fx30 for 1,643 no tax .lol I guess I lucked up because if a camera cost 1,500 you would pay close to what I paid for the xf30 . Should be here today ☺️

a7iii is an absolutely fantastic camera - I still have mine!!

I'm hoping sony can give us an fx3 v2 with the alpha1's sensor or a7iv's sensor that would probably make sense to upgrade 😉

@@CC.cinematics Don't get into Gear Acquiring Syndrome. ZVE10 is perfectly fine for beginners. Once you have driven it to its limits, and the camera becomes the bottleneck, then only you should consider to upgrade. Remember, a better camera doesn't make you a better creator.

If you can swing it - absolutely. That’s what I did

Since the FX30 announcement there are a few barely used A7IVs for sale out there for roughly the cost of a new a7c (after taxes here at least). The size and weight of the a7C is why it exists. For someone like myself (who likes the fact my camera fits in a lens pocket) I likely wouldn't be packing an A7IV or an FX30 for my travel stuff. They're all awesome of course.

I don’t own either - but the A7C is great. A lot of people don’t need the higher end video features. And they’ll have a way better photo camera too.
