Kia Ora friends, hope everyone is well. Here's a quick look at the compact yet powerful external flash or speed light from Sony, the HVL-F45RM.
Designed for sony alpha cameras, this is a very compact and powerful speedlight suitable for the Sony mirrorless alpha series like the a7iii, as7iii and maybe the new a7c.

You’re welcome mate. You need another F45rm though or the FA-WRC1M for off-camera shooting, not sure if the Godox X1TS and X1RS combo will work. Cheers

@@OneRiley I'd recommend getting the Sony HVL-F20M if you need as wireless trigger. You can find those used under $100 these days

Great overview. A few reviews online report that the hot shoe is weak and breaks easy (plastic, weak pins etc).. do you find this could be true?

Thanks David. I’ve been using this one for a couple of months now, and haven’t encountered any of those yet, seems very sturdy and of high quality plastic.

Even though I have owned this flash for 3 years, I have rarely used it. Even though this is basically a walkthrough, it tought me THAT THE UNIT CAN ROTATE HORIZANTALLY!!! I had assumed it couldn't just based on the way the geometry of the case looks. Thanks for that! So is it really true that I can use this as a wireless flash commander to trigger other units? Why would anyone ever buy flash commander if all the sony units have transmit mode?

Is it compatible with the new a7c? Can it be a slave flash that's placed on the ground somewhere on with the provided plastic stand and be controlled by the a7c's built-in networking flash settings? Or does the a7c need a separate remote device placed on the hotshoe to master/slave the F45RM? Newbie here. Thanks for the advice!

Hi there, yes it’s fully compatible with a7c since it will be the same hotshoe as the a7 series. Sad to say, for off-camera flash to work, you either need another F45RM to work as a commander or a FA-WRC1M (wireless transmitter) attached to your camera body to fire it remotely. @@OneRiley Hm, since the transmitter is the same price. Isn't it better just to buy 2 flashes and use one for master and the off camera for slave? Also, can the HVLF28RM and HVLF45RM communicate with each other?

@@Xn4W yup that was I'm thinking, but haven't tried yet. I'd almost order another f45rm, but had finally decided to use the cash for another prime lens. I'm also keen to know if the new H28rm will work as a commander, I hope it will, but not sure yet.

So sorry that it took me a week to respond to your query bro. I do believe that you’ll still to sit this on top of a godox rx, as this f45rm will only work as a receiver when use with a compatible Sony tx like the fa-wrc1m or another f45 or f60rm.

Hi, can it be used on a A9? Do you also see the settings on de lcd and viewfinder of your A7? Can you also change the settings via the A7 controls?

I’m certain that you can use this on an A9, because they do have the same hotshoe. For a73, as long as you’re on firmware version 3.01, they’d added the function that you can control the flash via camera settings.

Yes, it has built-in LED light for video, been using this for almost two years now and it's still doing a good job
