Nice review. I just got this camera today and I agree with your assessment. I'm disappointed with the oversaturation...I didn't think it would be that aggressive. Need to really work that out with P mode.

Sorry the more i watched you video i notice you mention the mode dial is hard to switch, hopefully this will improve the more i use it as for now its takes a lot of force to move it. Last question for you, i notice if i take a picture with a flash it can take anything from 5to10 seconds for flash to be ready to take another shot which i find very annoying but maybe i need to read manual more. Thanks again

Hi, i just got this camera and so far enjoying it but gave slight issue with mode dial, i find it incredibly stiff to move , to the point i am forcing it, is this normal and its make loosen up. Thanks

Not going to buy another Sony... The HX9V was the last for me. The pictures are way too off color, noisy and compressed. The Panoramic and de-focus modes are gimmiks that rarely work correctly. While the video is some of the best looking with great image stabilization, there is way too much "judder" and un-natural looking movements. It completely ruins the video for me. I would rather shoot with something of less quality that is at least stable.

My problem is I am going from an idiots no brainier point and shoot, (take your chance) camera to a SLR light that seems like your options are limitless. (to me at least) And that is exactly why I bought this camera. I need to get of the dime and learn something about photography. I am not fimilaur with all the number definitions and terms so commonly used with describing these cameras. There is a lot of code speak much like other electronics. I need to start at the first grade . LOL

People like your self do a wonderful job with these cameras but some of us just don't understand all the bell and whistle terms. Is there a place on line where a person can go step by step at their pace to try and absorb the use of this camera better? Otherwise it's going to end up staying in the drawer for ever. At this point is all seems so intimidating. Thanks for a great demo though. Sounds like I bought a great camera just don't know how to use it.

After Effects accepts AVCHD/MTS formats, and the Windows 7 Windows Media Player will play them perfectly. however GOM, VLC, and most others blur or pixelate the image. i have been using a AVCHD camcorder for about a year and have found that it isnt to much of a inconvenience.

I just rang sony support and she told me i cannot put a standard 2gb canon SD card into the camera? that they have to be sony branded SD cards? never heard the likes of it. I have standard SD cards from play.com that i use in my canon but yet wont work in this sony?

I followed your advice about getting rid of the orange/red tones with flash. I did a minus saturation and real color--and the photo looked washed out. Any other help on this problem before I take the camera back to the store? this is the most disappointing feature so far.

is the Sony HX9V user friendly? cus I was gonna buy it for my girlfriend for Christmas, who know's nothing about cameras(seriously...nothing) and isnt really good with gadgets n' stuff. Do you think it would be a bad idea to buy this particular camera?

yup just a normal SD. Ive taken a pic of the slot as some of the metal looks lopsided 2 me? i43.tinypic.com/35jwemd.jpg. I will have to ring support otherwise as i know SD and SDHC are both the same size so it should technically fit?

Also no filters at all while shooting video? No Black and white, 70's, or film grain? No Raw shooting mode? I'm sure Sony could have fixed some issues with a firmware update, but they refuse to do it. So I'm done...

yeah i know where the slot is, right next to the battery pack but the SD card wont go down (yes its also the right way). it seems 2 be too big 2 go down? cant feel any springs and when i push down it just jams?

I have a 2gb SD card and i cant seem to fit it in the slot? it says the camera will take SD or SDHC and this is the only card i have at the moment (fits fine in my other camera), am i missing something here?

@totallydubbedHD i have the HX7V which is the same more or less, i can`t just view videos like on the canon HS 310 - this sony does not work on windows,only pmb sony software disc that came with camera,don`t know what vic is ?

Does this camera pick up motor noise when recording video? Every camera below $300 reports this problem, does it do the same or should I just get camcorder?

@totallydubbedHD When you zoom whilst filming is the audio affected when you play the clip back? (motor noise sounds like zeeeeee zeeeeee when zooming lol)

not even sure what codecs for this type of files,file type says TS AVC format(1080)does wmp even play these ? guess your 720 mp4 work but have you viewed 1080

Hello again ,i recently bought this camera after watching some of your videos but one massive problem i am having is what i think is known barrel distortion. Massive problem or i have faulty camera. If i take a picture zoomed in at maybe 10x the building in picture looks like its about to tip over,any tips would be associated. Thanks

I had to bookmark this very informative video because I've had the camera for over a year and didn't know how to use it. My charger is different. Sony must have watched your video. I am reading everything and viewing I possibly can. One of the things I would ask is you so quickly go from one option to another and explain the function (good) but how to arrive at the function is not shown. I have taken my camera and played with it but how I got to a certain thing and I had no idea and to be able to go back there was impossible. It seemed like a maze. Your vid's are surly for people that have a extremely good basic understanding of the fundamentals. Very good though.

As I watched you demonstrate the massive menu choices, you go through them like you personally designed the camera. I cant even figure how to get to those options I feel so stupid but I am hell bound to learn how to use it. If you were in my completely novice (dumb ass) position where would you go to learn more about cameras I mean even the bare basics. All of these numbers codes and terms drive me up the wall because I need to find a way to understand them. Anything on line??? thanks

Well that was some demonstration. I bought this camera about a month ago. And I am totally frustrated. I am in way over my head. This thing has so many options and gizmos I don't know where to start. I probably should have bought a 30.00 point and shoot. As I watched you go through the features I thought God how will I ever figure this thing out, it seems so complicated. Seems it will take years to figure out how to ever get even a tenth of the potential out of it. Continued.

hey man very nice video and quite complete about features and options based on the point of use of the user itself, thats quite good because feels more realistic at the end. Just one thing about your comment regarding charger stuff is that I desagree with you because usb is quite more adaptable to a different environment because usb has universal voltage output so you can charge in a dc output or maybe a backup battery based on a solar panel for example. I just bought one as they're disappearing from the stores. It's frustrating not having a paper manual, so thanks for your video. I only wish you had gone more slowly. I had to keep pausing and finding the function on my camera. I wish there were a Dummies book for this camera, as it has so many functions. Wanna write one?

I'd say it's actually a good review, as most of the DSC-HX9V "Reviews" I've watched so far have actually been more of a general overview than a review, only repeating the same information available anywhere online regarding technical specifications and manufacturer's blurb. This video, however, is actually a proper review of the product and is exactly what I was looking for. So thank you for posting it, totallydubbedHD.

Great review! I am looking for a camera or camcorder to shoot video, for studying video editing techniques (rotomasking, green screen, color grading, motion tracking and effects). As I am mostly interested in video quality, and compact size isn't a priority, is there a video camcorder that produces superior video quality with more manual controls, for around the same price ($350-400+)? I'd also like a swivel screen and mic inputs. cheers, Dave

I'm not impressed with the charging thing either. If I've got an extra battery, I might like to be charging one battery at home whilst I'm out shooting with another. I don't want to have to use the camera it's self to charge batteries. Thank you for mentioning this. I've bought a Panasonic camcorder in the past 12 months or so and that's the same, there's no external charger, just an on-board charger. I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of my DSC-HX9V from Amazon. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

I use 1080/60p for recording my son's swim meets. This usually has about 8 clips of about 3 - 5 minutes each over two days. Each has lots of zooming in and out (all the way both ways) as well as stabilization turned at high. At the end I am left with at least 1/2 the battery.

Thanks for posting me back. I feel better already. Reminds me of the week I bought my first PC about 12 years ago. Wanted one so bad but didn't have a clue as what to do with it for some time, when others were just click clacking away.Lack of patience I guess. Reminds me of the 22 speed truck I use to drive and trying to teach someone use all of the gears when they are use to an automatic. I think this is more complicated, and am not smart enough to learn fast enough to suit me. Anyway, Thanks

Thank you for a very informative review. I am looking to purchase this cam but am waiting for January Sales when hopefully I can pick up for £220 ish which I think is more like what this cam should be. I actually like the idea of the USB Charger as long as it CAN be charged and picture/video uploaded to my PC like my HTC Phone, if not then I agree with you. I had a play with one today in Tempo as I was very impressed with it for a compact zoom cam. I normally use a Nikon DSLR.

Fantastic review very informative :) I like going to music gigs. What is the sound like when recording in a noisy setting. Does the sound get distorted or is it audible?? Also do you know what the maximum memory card you can use?? Sandisk also sell 16gb and 32gb cards

Yes I watched the whole video...I bought this camera about 3.5 years ago. I still can't use 1 500th of what it will do. Seems so complicated. I watched you wiz through all the settings and functions, and my head was spinning. How long did it take you to get that filmuar with it. Seems there should be a course you can take to learn to use it...or maybe I should have boughten a basic point and shoot LOL. God it seems so complicated. You must have an extensive background in photography. I love the camera but I think it's waaaay over my head. I hate to think I will never get the use out of it I would like too.But thanks for the video.

Haha! Took me about 1 week to get familiar with it :) There's settings I STILL don't use on it though, till this day. As for having a background in photography, far from it, but I love technology :D
