In this video I will show you how to use the Sony Imaging Edge Mobile App to transfer photos to your smart device and to remote control the camera from your smart device. the information on this video has become basically useless for 2021, but anyway, you can skip directly to minute 4:30 and increase the speed at least to 1.5 for saving a bit more time

I just wanted to say thank you to all you offering troubling shooting pointers and the solution to sending over full size original Jpeg files! For those that need to send over original size photos, you must be shooting in Jpeg mode or Raw + Jpeg. The camera will only send over original size jpeg files if the camera has then on the memory card. I always shoot Raw for the most part, so this is why no matter what setting I used the app would only transfer the lower resolution files. The camera/ app will not transfer original size jpeg files if you are shooting just raw quality unfortunately...

So glad I stumbled across this video today. You just saved me $60 on buying a camera remote! Funny too because I already use Imaging edge nearly daily to transfer image files from my Sony a6600 to my devices. I just never explored whether it had a a remote function. Happy now because it's one less piece of kit that I need to carry around in my bag. Thanks for making this video!!

Thanks Jason. I like your name; my son's name is Jason. Anyway, I tried the Sony Imaging Edge Mobile App with my new HX99 and it works OK with my iPhone SE. When at home, I use the supplied cable to transfer my images to my Mac Mini M2PRO running Ventura 13. The camera shows up as a drive, and transferring into Lightroom is very fast. Bob

Thanks, and have you tried using a different cable? The A1 has the USB -C and Multi USB port. Also is your USB setting set to Auto?

I appreciate your trying to help us out with this video. I believe I'm following your instruction correctly. However, I still cannot get remote control of my new A6600 with my Android Galaxy s+9 or my iPad. On the iPad, I click on the ICLE 6600 under the camera list. I get the message, "Unable to join the network "DIRECT....". Do you have a guess as to what I'm missing?

As far as the Galaxy S9+ is concerned... after I click on the ICLE-6600 under the camera list, it reads "connection successful" at the bottom of the screen and then immediately says "Disconnected" in the middle of the screen. Given that neither the iPad or Samsung phone is having any luck, is it possible that there is something wrong in the a6600 ?

Just restarted the iPad and now it works again. It's a rather finicky app. Or the a6600 is finicky.

Good post, Jay. Few trouble-shooting pointers. A6000 doesn’t have QR code - use NFC if avail on android device or enter SSID/pw displayed on cam. Cam airplane mode must be set to OFF - turn back on to save power when done. Via NFC, on cam turn off airplane mode, display target image in play- on NFC equipped Android smartphone turn on NFC and bring back of smartphone to touch cam NFC icon; even on A6000, the app will launch, image copy to phone and connection ended. Done. Next, prior versions of app would automatically disconnect wi-fi when image transfer was completed; now with recent new app version connection stays on. On smartphone temporarily disable “auto-connect” for other wi-fi sources; otherwise, when the cam connection is broken the auto-connect kicks in, and user may be expecting to still be connected to cam. Check smartphone wi-fi connection list to be sure the cam signal is still active and connection is on. Don’t expect cam wi-fi signal to reach far - keep at arms length to smartphone for more reliable connections. Also, one connection at a time - don’t expect to send to multiple smart devices at the same time. Finally, don’t be surprised if the smart device returns a “no Internet” message when the device connects to the cam. Cute doggie.

Hello 🤓 just two questions: - do you lose face tracking on 4k on 6400/6600 with the remote control? - can you do review of the movie clip from your smartphone? I mean.. I record a clip, can I instantly look at it (video/audio) via streaming? On lumix I can di it, on Fuji I have every time to download the clip into smartphone and it's a pain. How does it work here? 🤓 Any app limitation to know? Thank you

Hello, Yes you lose tracking in 4k when using the remote as far as I can tell. Second question, no you can't review the movie on the phone without copying the file over as far as I know.

You solved a problem that I was having with the Location Information Linkage feature in the Imaging Edge Mobile. Being able to add GPS data automatically is important to me, and it is one reason why I upgraded from a RX100M3 to the A6400. I was happy when I got Location Information Link to work after going through the clunky set-up. However, I was extremely frustrated when the following day the A6400 would not connect to my iPhone XR. All the boxes were checked; Bluetooth connection OK; Allow Imaging Edge Mobile to Access Location set to ‘Always’; Location Link on the A6400 set to ’on’. And yet the camera and phone would not connect. You provided the solution: Just close Imaging Edge Mobile on the iPhone (by swiping it up) and restart the app. Now the camera connects and registers the location information. Thank you!

I’m having the exact same issue. It took my a long time to figure out how to upload the pictures in my phone I had to troubleshoot multiple times and finally have it in my imaging edge app but have no idea how to get it into my phone

I love the new GPS-over-Bluetooth function, but I find that I have to unpair and re-pair my camera to the phone every so often. Using an iPhone X with the a6600.

No I do not unfortunately. The App is very limiting in that way which is extremely frustrating and why I rarely use it for anything other than taking a photo off the camera for a quick share.

You can't display it as a timelapse. A timelapse needs to be created from the images via software.

Hi Jay interesting video. I have a RX10iv. I have noticed that my bird images are pretty soft. Having just listened to your video I will adjust image size from 2mp to original (JPEGS of course) in the hope that it might sharpen up the images. I learned a lot thanks mate. Subscribed.

@@Jason_Hermann Hi Jay I managed to get a bit of time today. First I must admit that I have been down loading to my tablet, but unbeknown to me it was at 2mp. As soon as I changed this to "Original" things looked better. I had also down scaled my camera to 5 mp. So I put that back up to 20mp and also down loaded the images to my laptop, and wow, all of a sudden everything was sharp as a pin. So A big thank Jay, I am a much happier bunny now. So greatfull, thanks again.

Even though Sony RX series cameras are more expensive than comparable Canon cameras, the RX100 VII includes a mic input. I also like the extra features: zoom, change focus point, etc... in Sony's Image Edge App. The RX VII with an external mic would be a great, lightweight setup!

@@Jason_Hermann I believe it`s not depenndig of camera, but which file do you transfer. If you try to send raw then it is always small. If sending jpg, you can choose what size you want - Original / 2M / VGA

Hello Jay, thx for the Video. I have trouble with my a6600 and my Oneplus 7 Pro, Android 10. Wifi connection, NFC, everything works. The zoom function is so slow, that it is unfortunatelly useless, but it doesnt border me. The first problem is: I can transfer my pictures to the phone, but I can´t change the folder (mass storage), where the pictures are saved while transvering. There is an option for that, but is doesn´t work. I have to cut and paste all pictures from the image edge mobile app folder in to my DCIM folder manuel. Otherwhise they won´t show up in my gallery app. Additional, some zoom photos (even jpg) with more than 60mm are not copyed, which is realy wierd. The second problem is, that I can´t transfer RAW files anymore, no idea why they change that. So I have to use all these dongles and type-C adapters while traveling, when I want to backup. Sony probably has a deal with gnarbox. ;-) Any solution? The app is realy crap...

Hi Felix, I'm sorry but I do not have any solution for you. I never used that camera and can only speak from my experience using my Samsung Galaxy S8 and older iPad. I'm sorry to hear of your trouble and there is no doubt the app is finicky with various phones/ devices. I wish I could offer a solution for you other than using one of the adapters I suggested in the video, but it is what it is....

It is saved directly to your phone, but in the folder selected in the menu system. On my phone it does also appear in the gallery, but that is not the same for everyone unfortunately...

I can transfer and control if I use the QR code ("+ Connect with a new camera" every time), but when I select the camera from the list I get "unable to join network". Have tried disconnecting from you home network? Sometimes the phone will be attached to another wi-fi network and it won't connect to the cameras wi-fi

I am having an issue with the app. It dosen't show me the exposure. I can manipulate the settings both photo and video but it wont allow me to see what the exposure meter is saying its just grayed out all the time. Do you know how to fix? This use to work so I'm not sure whats going on. Thanks

hey, great video. mine is becoming very frustrating. it keeps saying not enough memory anytime I try sending videos. this was never an issue with camrote until the recent upgrade. I use a Sony a7iii and an iPhone 11 Pro Max... I need help. I even try transferring the video to my laptop first and when I try to send from my laptop to my phone via airdrop it declines or cancels... NB: I have 256G and I have more than enough memory. thank you

I appreciate the thoroughness and clarity of the information you presented, but a couple of things… (1) throughout the video, you sounded very frustrated with people who were having trouble, as if you were losing patience with them. (2) you mentioned that this might be a problem with older models, but never offered to do a video demonstrating things with an older model. That might be helpful and informative for those people, and for you to know what’s going on. Thanks for trying to keep us running smooth.

Yes, you are correct Bret and I apologize for my tone in part of the video. It was not appropriate and I was honestly not frustrated with people having legit problems, but more the negative comments I was getting. In my previous video on this matter I had gotten dozens and dozens of questions that were clearly answered in the video, so from my perspective it was mostly user error, and/ or the given smart phone was not working well with the App. I got so many "not so nice comments on that video" that I let it get to me which is what you are describing. My apologies and I tried my best to learn from this mistake. I wanted to take this video down in all honestly, but many people are still getting help from it so I decided to leave it up. Honestly it's nice to get a reminder every once and awhile to be more patient from users like yourself willing to point out my poor attitude. As far as older model cameras I did not have any on hand. Back when I made this video I only had a few cameras and needed to film with one, so I could not demonstrate on multiple cameras. Same thing with the smart device, I only had the Samsun phone and iPad to work with. All the best, and thanks again for the comments! Jay

You can't use touch to focus via the phone. You need to set the camera up to whatever focus mode you want and when you press the shutter button on your phone for example, the camera will quickly focus and then fire the shot. The camera should focus when you fire the shot though and then stay focused on whatever you took a photo of, so you can see it clearly on the phone.

How do I get ahold of you I have a Sony A5100. I am trying to connect it to my MacBook Pro to use as a monitor to see myself filming beauty tutorials. I don't see a difference in size or quality no matter what setting I use. It sends over about a 2mp photo to my phone when testing.

@@Jason_Hermann Hi Jay! There is a way to make the camera send the full size JPEG files. If the file size is reduced, that's because the camera is set to RAW only. You need to set it either to RAW & JPEG or JPEG, then the files are uncompressed. Here's my answer that I've already posted in the comment section: If you want to transfer full size original JPEG files (that is 6000 x 4000 pixels), - go into the settings of the app and set the image size to "Original" - then go into your camera settings (Quality/Image Size1, page 1/14) and make sure that File Format is set either to "RAW & JPEG" or "JPEG". (Not only "RAW"!) Then you will receive uncompressed, full size JPEGs on your smart device, that are about 14 MB or larger, rather than only 2 MB or less. Note: if you have the camera set to RAW only, it will create a compressed JPEG file (1616 x 1080 pixels, max. 2 MB) which is sent to your smart phone. And: the camera cannot send RAW files. (For press photographers it is absolutely essential to be able to send the full size JPEG files to their editorial staff right away.)

A7rIII user here, the app will not send over full sized JPEG if I am shooting in JPEG+RAW on the same card or different cards, will only send a preview jpeg unless I am shooting in JPEG only.

@@Jason_Hermann Hi Jay, I believe I am doing it a bit differently than you. You are sending images from your camera gallery to your phone while I am copying / importing photos onto my phone from the camera via the app. Here are my steps, 1) Start the camera and when it is on live view display, press menu > Network > Send to smartphone Func. > Send to smartphone > Select on smartphone. This will start the camera wifi hotspot and then you connect to that hotspot via your phones wifi menu 2) Then open the imaging edge app and tap on A6400. It gives a prompt saying 'starts viewing of in camera images'. Tap 'ok'. 3) You can now view all the images from your camera on your smartphone and the images are sorted date wise. 4) Tap on the desired image to select it and then tap on the send to smartphone symbol on the bottom of the screen. This will then send the image to your phone. P.S. Make sure you have selected 'original only' in the camera Menu. Menu > Send to smartphone Func. > Sending Target > Original only. Hope this helps.

However, as it turns out the key thing I was missing was the images must be Jpegs in order for the app/ camera to transfer original files over. If you shoot raw it will only be the lower res file no matter what the settings are. I know know it's because it says, original file, and the app will not send over raw files. Weird for sure, but does make sense if you think about it ;)

For me I have trouble connecting my Note20U and a6600- unless I just use NFC. That just works instantaneously and perfectly every time. I just touch the phone to the grip side where the NFC icon is and BAM. instantly connected. I just have to have unlocked the lock screen, but it opens the app. Trying to connect from anything other than scanning the bar code each time always fails. (Even though my a6600 is on the list in the mobile app. Thankfully NFC connection works flawlessly as that's what I prefer using anyway. Recommend people try NFC if having the issues connecting I have.

Ah ha!! That was my problem, I always shoot Raw only Andreas. That makes a lot of sense now that you say it and explains a lot. Thank you very much for the info! @@AndreasWHold Yeah I played with the settings for over an hour, read all the documentation, and just could not for the life of me figure it out. It clearly seemed like it must be an option I thought, but no luck. The fact that the camera was making a proxy low res jpeg image from the raw file led me to believe it would just make a full size version. It never dawned on me that "original" meant it needs the full res jpeg file on the camera. In hindsight it actually makes total sense now :) I really wish I talked to you before I made this video!! I have a OnePlus 7T. It will not connect. Get a disconnect error. Something is not right with the wifi connectivity on the phone using the QR code, but if I connect using password. I was successful a few time.

I found if I have "AF w/ Shutter" on, my A7III will focus based on current focus settings before shooting when I tap the app shutter button. Frustrating as I have back-button focus set up and with AF w/ Shutter off it will not attempt to focus. I added this to my custom menu under the smartphone control setting so I remember to change it if I want to use the app. There doesn't seem to be a way to control focus any more than activating the current mode.

Yep, as you note, this doesn't work for an a6000. No QR code. You say there are other ways to connect, but from what I can tell, the Image Edge app sucks and doesn't connect to my S8.

Coming from canon, this process is infuriating. Using CameraConnect with my Canon 70D was seamless. It was as simple as connecting to my home wifi. Every single time I try to use Imaging Edge with A6600, it’s a 1hr+ process. Unfortunately this video is not representative of all the issues this app has. You CAN get it to work. But it doesn’t “just work”

Hey how come when I do the wireless control for my a6000, I don't have all my options on my phone? No iso, no aperture. Only exposure? I have a google pixel 2xl and the app is updated. I just updated my a6000 to the latest update too.
