It has been over a decade since Sony has released a true, high-end headphone flagship. I have a look at whether these make for a true successor to legends such as the MDR-R10.
Don't forget to check my gear list before asking a question about how it compares to other products: www.hear.audio...

Please check my gear list (also in my Head-Fi profile) to see what headphones and other products I have or have used BEFORE asking how the Z1R compares or works with something. headphone-earphone.reviews/about/. If I don't have/haven't used something, I can't answer your question. Thanks.

So in the end, i think this is the perfect headphone for me, really, people is having a hard time to say it, but they are prefering a colored headphone over a transparent because at this level of fidelity the usual problems became quite unnoticeable, and for many hours listenings, the relaxed treeble accomodates. Thank you for the review.

Sure, but in order for that test to be comparable Tyll would have to test the production model using his own setup. I'm sure there's a lot of factors at play.

I listen 1/2 the time on Dynaudio X14 and the Z1R are very close in sound stage. If I use Z1R in darkened room and can just 'listen' then they are very speakerlike.

Isn't it interesting that "enjoyable" has become the opposite of "neutral."
@muna5066
@muna5066 5 лет назад
Yeah it's very weird. I feel like if neutral isn't "fun" that's more about you music preference. You don't need headphones to emphasize bass or treble if your music in interesting and dynamic to begin with. I let the artists do that with neutral headphones. I like to have some less neutral headphones around for certain types of music but that doesn't make neutral less fun.
@m.g.i2480
@m.g.i2480 4 года назад
Id rather think neutral has become the opposite of enjoyable. Enjoyable sound mostly is enjoyable at least to me because it does not get too thinny or harsh or overkill in any region. Most "Neutral" headphones and expensive headphones tend to take natural tone, throw it in the bin and then take all the detail and shuff it up your face. That to me is not neutral. HD600 or HD599 even is to me far more neutral than for example a HD800 or an Beyerdynamic DT880... The Philips for example definately isnt neutral. But to my ears is tuned away from neutral in a more pleasurable way than a DT880 or a DT990. (No question the DT880 is very very detailed and the HD800 has spectactular stage and imaging) but to me the detail isnt natural in its potency anymore. A guitar doesnt sound thinny and brilliant. At least my guitars dont. The HD599 to me recreates my guitar recordings the best. Even though i feel that with other music especially voice heavy musich the HD660 is more neutral.

70 mm progressed from: XB1000-MA900-Z7-Z1R-Z7MK2. So yeah, a 8-9 odd driver, start from modern Sony tuning, all they put on the flagship of their line. So probably, if, Sony ever made a new open headphone line, it'd probably also be using the 70.

Really nice review! I am a Z1R owner, and I totally agree what you describe about this can. Btw, the cable makes really huge difference for Z1R. I bought a silver/copper hybrid cable for it, this cable bring up the brightness(a lot) and make the bass punchier. And with my fully balance set up, the soundstage is larger than single end(still smaller than hd800 tho). I would say this headphone is really a endgame for me :)
@choppersplace
@choppersplace 7 лет назад
which cable? you have to admit, however, it's crazy that one might want to spend another $500 or more on an aftermarket cable to improve the sound....at this price the stock cable (imo) should be equally top notch and paired well to bring out the best in these cans.

Great review Amos! Always value your opinion and have been using the Z1Rs for 10 days now and liking them so far. Picked them up (after your headfi thread & video here) at the airport in Singapore, 'burnt' them in on the 14 hrs on SQ32 to San Francisco and then really enjoyed them on the 16+ hrs on SQ31 coming back :-) Listened to them via the Hugo and Dragonfly red and they sounded good. Isolated well on the flight and when I took them off and kept them aside cups together I couldn't hear the music. As a result I never used the Roxanne or 846 also in my bag and which I always use on long flights fatiguing as UIEMs can be. With better resolution and sound stage they significantly upped the music vs my Mezze 99 classics (of course at 5x the price) which have been my go-to closed phones since last year. I am curious how they will sound with other amps both portable or desktop, I did feel at some points of my listening that the Hugo wasn't driving them to their potential but we will see. Any plans to check out the Sony ZH1ES? Thanks again for your reviews and advice

IC's by Van den Hul and the Kimber Headphone Cable. With the decrease in price and for those that prefer a warmish, musical and non-fatiguing SS picking up a pair of these cans is a no-brainer. Yeah, this cat is still grooving to the 60's and 70's vibe since it sure beats the hell out of the present.

So now the question, for the basshead with expensive taste, if you pump a bunch of power into this and EQ everything but the bass down so that the trebles doesn't pierce through your head, will they take it, or will they just start distorting and make everything else sound like it's playing through a fan. The only other can I know that had 70mm drivers was the XB-1000s and they have a very tunnel-like sound, whereas this looks like it would somehow sound good whilst housing massive drivers to make your head shake. An example song is something like "Arctic" by Aether.
@Currawong
@Currawong 7 лет назад
They should take it, if you're using a decent amp that doesn't distort. You'd think the Z1R chassis is more inert. That is something that should show up in measurements, where the 100dB distortion test is better (lower) than the 90dB, all the way down to the low bass.
@Halomaster4ever
@Halomaster4ever 7 лет назад
I must admin I didn't know what that was before I read the comment and went away to do some reading haha. Did find a thread online speaking about it and it appears the general consensus was that people were surprised at how bad the numbers come up distortion wise, but for the most part, when listening, no one could really hear anything to complain about in that respect. Could be an interesting end-game and Sony is big enough to have UK retailers also >=D Recently found the IFI Micro iDSD BL and it should take care of all my power and DAC requirements...ever. Thanks for replying and keep up the great review work!

I have these for a few hours. I bought them, so long I like them. I don't mind strong bass, actually- I like the bass performance with these. There's a lot of detail in it. 3 kHz peak of these HPs (result of resonance) is more of a deal to me, along with attenuated lower midrange. It colors male voices with strange, shrieky timbre (they sound higher in pitch). This may sound good for some rock music however. high mid/low treble (4,5,6,7 k) attenuation followed by 8,9,10k peak makes for strange timbre in most percussions. They sound hollow, without the usual hit/slam I was used for. This also makes sibilant noises less aggresive (most of the sibilance in vocals lies in the higher mids and lower treble I guess) sounding and puts these instruments/ noises rather backward to the mix. They sound more like a detail to make the mix more interesting rather than the main attraction. I don't think 10k peak adds much sibilance. Guess most of it that's present with Z1R comes from 3k peak. So long- I like electric guitars and female voices with these. They lean on to the aggresive side (maybe because the uneven frequency response?), but still enjoyable and not overly tiring to my ears. Electric guitars remind me of those old Marshall combos. Bass hits with physical impact- I feel it. I like it. Soundstage and separation is great so long. Kinda like helmet of sound with nice depth to it- some things really seem to be further away than others. Nighthawk does this too- maybe it's because attenuated mids? So these do things the other way around compared to most headphones I heard. Most high-end/ mid tier headphones hardly have any bass (I hardly hear melodies in bass spectrum with most other headphones), they only use it to make the final sound more appealing, while much of the energy lies either in mids or in highs- those percussions are bread and butter to many headphones I tried. Melodies and details in the bass spectrum gets lost to me (I can list HD600 and HE400i as an example). The main meal to Z1R are bass guitar and synth melodies, along with some kick drums in the big soundstage, while these only use percussions to make the whole mix a bit more interesting. A thing at the address of isolation measurement at innerfidelity- I also happen to own Nighthawks. They measure at -12dB of ambient noise attenuation. Z1R measure at -14 dB. Thing is, these Z1Rs seem to me as much better isolating pair than Nighthawks. Is the 2 dB difference really that big, or is there some problem with measurement? a lil thing of notice- these look great in my hands, but they look so dumb on my noggin. Kinda like huge, black, cyclopean nipples. Tilted drivers hit my ears a bit at the front. I have average ears.
@kato2395
@kato2395 2 года назад
Very detailed impression however I am a little bit confused when you say the headphone is without the usual hit/slam but then you said that the bass hits with physical impact. Can you elaborate more about this?

I just bought the d9200 because of the stellar reviews. Got em from denons website to make sure they were legit and to be honest, they sucked. I felt like crying because the sounded no better than my 350 dollar v moda crossfade 2 wireless. I even paired them with a 15,000 dollar and and still wasn't impressed. Vocals weren't clear and soundstage and imaging was displayed in a very unpleasant way, even after 150 hours of burn in. Still, buy them if you want and please let me know if I'm crazy! Have a good one

Nice video! What do you think of these compared to the AudioTechnica W3000ANV? I've been eyeing the MDR-Z1R but I'm concerned that the Z1R won't bring enough new to the table for its cost since I already own the W3000ANV. My general guess after your video and reading various impressions is that the Sony would likely bring better bass and soundstage but the mids would not be as nice.
@Currawong
@Currawong 7 лет назад
It was quite a while ago I owned the W3000ANV. I didn't find them to be that resolving, though I suppose for the price they aren't bad. I had trouble getting a good seal, so the bass was inadequate for me. The Z1R will indeed be totally different. The music where you want the bass kick, albeit not too much of it, is where these really shine indeed.

I'm using these with SONY's TA-ZH1ES amplifier. I just got the Z1R for a few days. The sound still doesn't sound that warm to me yet (compare to the Rogers LS3/5A stereo speakers at my home), everything seems to be too harsh and sharp. I hope they will sound better as I breaking them in more.

Another great review. So if your going for 2k$ headphone these or the Ether Flow on a soild state amp ? Are the Z14 worth 4x the price of the Z7? Really does a $500-700$ Kimber cable make that much audible difference ? Love to see blind testing with 10 people and listen with 2 different types of cables. I have some custom cables but made with T2 copper and balanced connectors but were $150. Better pairing with tube amp or would it be too warm ? Thanks for the great reviews Amos.
@Currawong
@Currawong 7 лет назад
I'd like to bust the myth of tube amps being "warm". A lot are tuned that way, but you can make a solid state amp sound warm too. I reckon using them with an amp that suits your needs would be the way to go. I think at some point they exceed what the Z7s can do, but at exactly what budget point I'm not sure. That might make for a good video though. As for cables, in retrospect, I wouldn't buy the Kimber again (it is my Z7 cable, and didn't cost anywhere near $500) but talk to one of the various people I know who make aftermarket cables and see what they can make. It would be a lot cheaper and probably a better match.

nice review, Currawong...there has been lots of mention on headfi that the stock cable is premium, or isnt't allowing these cans to show their full potential...cables are always such a dicey subject (double blind testing for me, please, to show real vs placebo diffs)...did you ever ask the maker/chief designer/engineer about these cables at some recent canjam meeting?

I didn't get around to it, but I still suspect that the reason is primarily robustness, going by the materials used.

Cables don't matter --- I've specifically tested (with my eyes closed, in order to eliminate confirmation bias)stock cable vs silver dragon on the HD800S, and turned out I couldn't tell any difference. I do like the shorter length and more robust build of the silver dragon though. But as far as audio quality is concerned, it's a scam.

Have you ever heard the Sony R-10, either the bass heavy or light version? If so, I wanted to see if this was finally the product they made that would replace that, or even come close to it. From what I read, it had a lot of euphonics, perhaps colored to give you that enjoyable sound. From your review, I get the impression that this might be trying to attempt that signature sound... although I don't recall it having treble heavy or bright sound. Btw, out of all the headphones and companies flooding the market, Sony iteration of this particular headphone (R10's) is what I'm waiting for...whenever they get around to making it. Sennheiser already made theirs with the Orpheus HE-1, which is ridiculously priced. The balls on Sony's court now to bring out their killer, which according to some stood neck-and-neck with the Orpheus back in the days.

A friend told me about listening to an earlier prototype of the Z1R that had much nicer tuning than the final production. I very much wish they'd gone for accuracy over trying to mimic obscure studio monitors. I have tried, fairly briefly, both bass-heavy and bass-light R10s, and with the latter, at the time I preferred the Audeze LCD-3 I owned. A friend did not. I do remember them being as resolving as HD800s (my system at the time was not anything like it is now, so take that into consideration) but with a more mellow tuning.

I think the Sony MDR-Z1R is better off for being entertaining vs neutral as I don't think any closed-back could beat an open-back chasing pure neutrality at a medium to flagship price level. Based on various accounts and reviews closed-back headphones seem to hit a high end engineering wall much sooner. However, I have more need of a closed-back vs open-back for most times dunning headphones, so that makes the MDR-Z1R my next headphone to test drive / purchase. And sometimes entertaining is more fun than neutral if the neutral headphone lacks a bit of energy or is just to the side of too reserved.

The Ether Flow is a bit more mid-bass focussed, but it isn't excessive relative to the rest of the sound. The Z1R has more significant bass, especially with the Kimber cable on them, and some people would find it too much. I thought the bass was great, noting that I was using a Schiit Audio Yggdrasil and ALO Audio Studio Six, so it would be as tight as it could be. However I liked listening with them when I wanted a lot of bass.

Hi Currawong, Do you think Z1R's low impedance compare with other flagship dynamic-driver headphone is a issue when picking amp? Will NFB-1AMP be a good amp for z1r?

Not a problem at all. If you look at Sony's PH-series amps, they had very low power outputs and could easily drive the Z7 and Z1R. The NFB-1AMP is more than sufficient.

Hello sir, I plan to get the kimber cable for the Z1R, but m not sure whether it's worth the money or not. from ur experience, does the kimber cable make the difference to justify the price? Thank you for ur answer.
@Currawong
@Currawong 5 лет назад
If you already have an excellent system with which to use the Z1R from which you like the sound, maybe it'd be worth it. The Kimber cable seems to make the sound a bit "warmer" which I think plays to the strengths of the Z1R. I'm not sure if I'd choose it though if I bought an aftermarket cable for them myself. It depends what your goals are.

I guess the 4.4mm balanced cable is a good way to go; it's just annoying that that all the balanced gear presently is XLR. And just on principle I'm not paying $200 bucks for a damn cable (how much a balanced xlr cable costs).
@Currawong
@Currawong 7 лет назад
There is plenty of single-ended gear out there I reckon. Hopefully this year the popular manufacturers can come out with Pentaconn versions of their products.

Currawong I really like the build quality though :( Your review seems to be accurate from others mentioned the high frequencies seems to be dark and tammed. Do you think pairing this with the Sony TA ZH1es amp will open up the sound for more precise monitoring? Thank you your response.

Thanks mate for the review. How do you think it would stand against NAD HP-50? Tyle have been saying that NAD's are so good that they deliver 95% of the performance of Ether C Flow. So wondering it might be the same for Sony's. Would you mind to share your opinion with us please? Thanks.

The EDX V2 is quite neutral and I felt a good all-rounder. The Z1R is very coloured, and if you can enjoy its particular tuning, you'll love it, but some people can't stand it. The ED-X it is hard to say how it stands up value-wise, as since I reviewed it some very good $800 headphones have come out. The Sony -- someone found a pair for $1400. I think the full retail price is hard to justify especially giving the issues with the tuning.

I haven't spent a lot of time with them recently, but previously the Audeze LCD range. The original (non-fazor) LCD-3 was, some years ago, one of my favourite cans for vocals.

The acoustic chambers of the Z7s are Magnesium, not plastic.

Do you need to utilise an amplifier if you run them through a new sony DAP such as a ZX300 Walkman or will they be short on power?
@Currawong
@Currawong 5 лет назад
It mostly depends how loud you listen. You can get away with running headphones out of a DAP if you listen fairly quietly, but a desktop rig will almost always give better results (excepting expensive DAPs with high output power).

can you tell me how can i connect to a balanced input if the headphones cable terminates with two 3.5mm, ends? if i have the nfb 28, how do i connect a balanced sony cable (2x3.5mm splits) to a one balanced input? thanks.
@Currawong
@Currawong 7 лет назад
You don't. You buy the correct cable or a different aftermarket cable for them which works with the NFB 28. The dual-3.5mm cable is for Sony players.

Is that earcup plastic? I remember the mesh on the outside of the cup feeling plasticy is it metal or plastic? Cheers.
@Currawong
@Currawong 7 лет назад
The mesh has to be metal. The Yoke is metal but the rest appears to be plastic. I was scratching my head about mentioning it until someone had proper measurements, but I am not sure if there isn't a bit of resonance from the structure, or if it is just the music I listen to.
@TheFijianGuy
@TheFijianGuy 7 лет назад
Currawong thanks brother yeah i remember feeling it and it didnt have that cold metal feel to it. (nothing a magnet couldnt solve) the only metal i could really remember was the half yolk that holds the headphone in place (cool and shiny) I did hear multiple things about the mesh i believe someone said it was stainless steel? I dunno but the headphone is amazingly light.. I did feel a bit upset with the amount of plastic it appears to be using the fibonacci grill the cups its well mostly plastic from what I could remember. I did love the earcups but wonder if that lambskin will get hot as time goes by.. Premium headband tons of plastic on the rest of the headphone but hey look at the hd800 mostly plastic but still a classic! The Utopia well thats what you call build quality haha.

"Build Quality" is *not* the same as the materials chosen for specific parts. Please stop this. Putting tinfoil and cracking wood on everything doesn't benefit the construction.

A5 Kobe At this tier, though the utopias are much more expensive and amp picky, they are the only two dynamics in a mostly planar dominated market, so its kinda between those two, though the utopias pretty much destroy anything paired with the right setup...
