Sony PS3 "Fat" HDMI Repair - Faulty Console Restoration

We're finally working on the first PS3 restoration on the channel! I have a couple more PS3s waiting in the backlog as well. The Xbox 360 and PS3 are probably the most recent generation of consoles that I have any personal history with or interest in.
I got this unit off Craigslist with a broken HDMI port. While replacement HDMI ports are more easily available for the Slim, I had a hard time finding any for the fat model and had to order used replacements from China that were pulled from other faulty consoles.
This was my first time using my hot air rework station on an actual repair. It certainly made removing the HDMI port much easier than my previous methods of such repairs using a low melt alloy like Chip Quik with a soldering iron.
Preparing the board for the replacement HDMI port was a pain in the butt, more so that I was expecting. Practice makes perfect, and I'm glad I finally popped the hot air gun cherry. I look forward to working on more intricate component level repairs and improving my craft.
This project was a good test bed for upcoming PS3 repairs I have planned, which includes a launch model backward-compatible PS3 with the YLOD. I know my way around the system a little better and am more open to working on them in the future.

That's why they sounded like a jet engine when it ramped up.😏 Keeping them clean help's a lot with fan noise and overheating, I use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment Weekly. I suppose I'll have to renew the thermal paste on my 60gig consoles (X4)! Never had one overheat, yet! Even though my late wife💘 used to leave hers on with a game on pause, while she went out shopping🤦‍♂, a habit she picked up on the first Playstation in 1998 while playing Spyro!

I would suggest a continuous vacuum desoldering tool. My Hakko FR-301 was a game changer and I've practically stopped using desoldering braid altogether on through holes, and you can get tips as small as 0.6 mm internal diameter for those tiny pins like on the HDMI port. Single shot desoldering pumps aren't even close. There are cheaper clones if you don't want to pay for the Hakko but in general these tools are well worth it.

I think it’s easier on the ps3 because it’s though hole soldering not like others where it would be surface mount soldering but with the right tools it doesn’t look hard. I’m about to replace my first one on a ps3 and then I’ll work on my ps5 because it fell over and yanked the port so it’s wonky but does still work.

Remember: You can use hot air and soldering iron the same time to open holes. It will work twice as fast. For the exposed traces you can use UV curing soldering mask. Works like a charm. I always love your videos
@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD 3 года назад
Thanks for the tip bud. I've seen repairs do that for soldering SMDs, but how would you go about trying that for opening those holes up? Would you still use a braid somehow as well?
@taltechchip5827
@taltechchip5827 3 года назад
@Borderline OCD I would use Braid. You can keep the braid in place with the iron and other hand hot air. No need the rub the braid. The soldering mask came off because of the rubbing.

Stellar work, man ... another fatty saved from the "graveyard" ... BTW, can i recommend a desoldering gun, for future work? It makes jobs like these much easier to perform, especially when U have to work with ports or caps replacing ... A Heat Gun is also great, so a combo of the two tools - desoldering & heat guns - is the best of both worlds, i guess? All the best again with your new house & keep inspiring us with your repairs & restorations ... and good luck with the upcoming YLOD repair - those dreaded NEC-Tokens can sometimes be difficult to desolder, but usually only those close to the RSX kick the bucket & give YLOD to the console ... Cheers

Bossman, You do incredible work... make it look too easy... But just from doing little odds and ends, I KNOW how difficult it "can" be, but your work shows you've have practice and you are pretty damn good at your work.. Thank you for sharing this video.. I was sold a ps3 yesterday that "WORKED PERFECT" lol - The hdmi port gold tabs are all wrinkled up and doesn't work so I was seeing how difficult it was to replace... I don;t have the factory playstation av cord, so hopefully I can get one and use that for the display and just say f changing the hdmi - but if both displays are bad, I have to fix something... Anyways, I'm a new subscriber, and Thumbs up - You made this video simple to follow and understand, and made certain points clear like using quality stuff to make for a easier job... working construction all my life, trying to teach the new kids that start to buy good tools and not cheap tools, your doing yourself a favor... (Using a pair of klein side cutters to cut ceiling wire ( a metal clothes hanger) for a tile drop ceiling, all day VS a harbor freight 3 dollar pair.... will prove my point when it takes 5 times the strength to cut... doing 500 cuts all day long your hands will be so cramped up, blisters, ect... work smarter, not harder.. I just really am impressed in your work - great job

Hmm, yeah, fume extractor is definitely essential, I don't know how I got along for so much time without one. Now whenever I forget to turn it on, it only takes me a couple of seconds to immediately go for the on switch. As for the through holes on the and the difficulty clearing them with braid, if you have a desoldering station, I find using that works very well. Even if you don't use it to initially pull the port out and still use air, adding solder after that and then going in with the desoldering gun to clear the holes works really well. Obviously first it's best to let the board cool down.
