I thought the PSP did a great job. I love playing Smackdown vs Raw 2006 on the PSP just as much as the PS2 version. I still play the PSP version to this day. The biggest downside of the PSP was the lack of a right analog stick.

I used to have both of these as a kid. These shits were the fucking bomb. Years gone by, and I use my PSP Vita/New 3DS XL when I'm away from my PC/PS4. Timeless portable consoles.

Ioannis Stf yea I agree with the ram and screen but nothing beats the tank the 1000 is in build quality. and the ram is useless when hacked and you load games from the stick. and on screen quality and ram the PSP go is by far superior to the 3000 everyone know the PSP became cheaper in each revision...
I have a 1000 and a 2000 and I would have to say the screen is much better on the 2000 and it's thinner and looks nicer in my opinion so I would have to say the 2000 is better. The umd slot is way better on the 1000 though and I have to agree it is built like a tank
Actually scratch that - "backwards compatible" - I would say means, original software. the PSP cannot read PS games, - Only downloadable from the PS store (which was AMAZING, IF sony put up the games ya wanted.) and also, we never got San Andreas on PSP, if we wanted to make a list of everything said wrong with the video.
Vouniqs Sony never supported this method, its not backwards compatible although PS1 games were downloadable from PS store. its not backwards compatibility until you can play physical copies
Exactly that ^ Another thing to "note" (Which I argued against originally, but going from official to "homebrew" and back, there is a difference) Any PS game you converted to work via custom firmware, the game(s) run a % faster. I cant tell you how fast it is, but at a guess its like 1% faster. I presume (although im no expert so dont say its correct) I have the theory its due to the clock speed of the PSP. Naturally software can tell the hardware to adjust accordingly on what it needed. And I suspect with Sonys emulator (pilled in within the software itself, for all downloads) it set it to a clock-speed specific for a 1:1 ratio. Hackers, probably could achieve that - its just, its not much. Why would you bother? I know I would not,

I actually bought both of them this year to add to my collection and I have to say the PSP is superior. Don't get me wrong, I love the DS, but the PSP has far superior hardware and has more technically advanced games. The DS was likely more successful because of brand recognition and Nintendo's system selling IPs.

Entertaining video, but a few of your statements are inaccurate. PSP's UI, the XMB, was originally taken from the PSX, not the PS3. Additionally, the Game & Watch was the first dual-screen handheld, not the Nintendo DS.
I didn't say PS1. I stated PSX. It was a PS2 DVR unit released in Japan in 2003. That was the first usage of the XMB, preceding the PS3 by three years.
abut the switch feeling of the psp. the psp go (yea it failed i know) was even closer it had a tv dock support and was able to use ps3 controller wirelessly in this mode... so yea...
just thought I'd mention since it came across as you listing it as a pro for the DS, but the PSP also had it's own version of download play called game sharing. it was basically identical to the DS download play functionally.
I had both in their prime. DS lite and PSP, and I can assuredly tell you the PSP is better in every aspect. The PSP has better games, better hardware, and can do far more things. I remember as a kid, all the other kids at after school clubs wanted to play on my PSP to play GTA Vice City and GTA Liberty Stories. The only aspect that the Nintendo DS had over the PSP was the DS chat, where DS users close to each other could join chatrooms and message each other.

Ahh the Nintendo ds. Went through 3 of them. A white. A black. And a black and blue. Would always play Pokemon MDB and platinum. Plus the Sims 2. On the psp my brother got one back in 2007. And I spent so much time on it.
PSP used discs because you couldn't get those ps2 quality games on a cartridge back then. I believe UMD's held around 1.8 or 1.6 gigs of data while a DS cartridge would max out at 512mb and those were only used for games that absolutely needed it.
The DS has better software that's suitable for handheld play + a better battery life. It's why it outsold the PSP almost 2 to 1. Sony doesn't understand the market.
um. of course ds battery life gone be better if u running like a 64bit game compared to the graphics the psp had going on brah . also Nintendo was already established when this was Sony first handheld and they did do a good job . ds and wii was Gobbled Up by the casuals market fam . U obviously don't know what u talking about .
You may *subjectively* prefer the PSP library over the DS library as a personal opinion, and that's perfectly fine. *Objectively* however, the DS did have a much bigger library, with a bigger variety of genres, plus DS games are generally received better critically on websites than PSP games. DS games also come up in discussion way more than PSP games do, and are far more well known overall.
I have to say the games on Nintendo ds were entertaining but the psp was way ahead of its time , I mean back then it had the graphics that you would only see on ps2 or something and that was mind blowing , most of the characters that were in psp games had voices whereas no Nintendo ds game I remember had any of those features , psp's game library was for everyone be it for kids or adults , but ds was just aimed for kids . I have to give the credit to Sony sorry , but they included features like music player ,internet , video player and what not in a single game device which was a big thing at the time . The ds just gets all the fame and credit cuz of the mario games and Pokemon and all , whereas the bad games on ds were just downright horrible like cooking mama and what not and I even saw some sell for the same price as god of war like that is just bad , most Sony games have so much work put into them but I don't really see many Nintendo ds games with much work in them . You should change your final thoughts to " ds as just a portable gaming console and psp as an all in one entertainment system"
I have to disagree. While the psp doesn't have as much games as the ds, but remember, it's quality over quantity. While yes the ds has a ton of great games, I think the psp actually had some of the best portable games ever made. Spinoffs, that are as good or even better than the real deal. Plus, there's just more variety. You got FPS games, third person games, 3d and 2d platformers, racing games, horror games, action rpg's, puzzle games, almost every genre you can imagine, the psp has it. Also, fighting games. The psp completely dominates this genre.
UMD was designed to make full sized cds into a portable device as having 2gb of flash memory in 2009 for each game would cost them a bit. UMDs' suck but at the time it made sense to do this.
Ok, I had both the DS and the PSP when i was a kid. I used to buy the same game for both system at the same time, cause i was dumb. Anyways, even tough I played my DS more, I always had more fun with my PSP because at that time i was all about graphics and power, o did not know how to differ a decent game from a masterpiece. It all changed when the 3DS and PSVITA dropped. Man, my first and only psvita is accumulating dust until this day, while my NEW Nintendo 2DS is used for at least a couple of hours everyday. Its like, when you are ten years old, you would always choose Universal Studio’s Theme parks over Disney Land, because they are more edgy and wild. But when you reach like 16 years old, you just want to feel that Disney magic on your heart again, and don’t even think about those crazy Universal Rollercoaster anymore.
For one, the PSP didn't have backwards compatibility with PS2 games, in fact, it was the other way around, the PS2 received ports of PSP games (such as GTA Vice City and Liberty City Stories). Also, he didn't explain Download Play well. While yes, it is a way to play multiplayer games, he makes it sound like it's the only way (besides Wi-Fi) and doesn't explain how it works (with single card play) and how it was used in other way besides multiplayer (such as for downloading demos and transferring Pokemon).
97 baby right here, I feel ya, Gen 6 was the best along with 4&5 in my childhood, my ps1 is literally as old as me. I didn’t get into 6th gen until 2007 then it finalized in 2009 when I got my Xbox which I still have lol
The psp was more powerful and had more features let's not forget it had good quality game while on Ds it's like your playing in low resolution i owned both of them but me personally the Psp takes it's dub

I remembered growing up with a Nintendo DS and a PSP (well mostly a DS since my brother and I grew up on Nintendo). I'd give a PSP a chance bc of games, graphics, etc. I got pretty fascinated from this video and you made a great analysis. Keep up the work.
But yhea, UMD's could hold more data, around the 1.8GB. Which let to bigger games like gta VCS. Cartridges could hold less data, I think it was like 64 mb max. Games like GTA in 3D, is almost impossible for a cartridge to hold the data for it. For example Mario Kart DS will fit around 145 times on a single UMD. It is true that loadtimes are almost not there on a cartridge. But what do you prefer? A cartridge which size is very low, has less texures and you can't swap (UMD can, but they didn't implent it. But does have no load time, smaller game cards and it saves on the cartridge. Or the PSP UMD's. Which has more capacity and so can hold more texures and data. Which led them to hold bigger games, and produce them cheaper then a cartridge. But haveing loadtimes, reading errors sometimes. And are more likely to get damaged (psp umd has a case). I played both systems, and they both are great. As a kid I liked the DS and have the same problem with the above screen. But when i got older I started to like the psp better, and not only graphic like. I mean cod and NFS are in my opion better on the PSP then on the ds.
The half gigabyte cartridges were a rare sight and very expensive to produce compared to just a few cents to press a disk. It's no wonder Sony went with UMDs and I'm thankful for that, dare I say the Vita is a tad crippled by the cartridge size limitation, and so is the Switch nowadays. Flash storage got a heck lot cheaper yeah, but optical disks have always been hella cheap and still are.
That makes no sense, because before consoles started using discs everyone used cartridges/game cards; Nintendo, Sega, Turbografx 16. Also Sony had no problem copying Nintendo before. Right after Nintendo incorporated the rumble pack for N64, Sony made the dual shock controller. And Sony did the same thing with analog sticks and motion controls.
@@angelvillegas9604 sales don't equate to a better console. The PSP had multi media features such as a UMD drive, ability to watch movies, music capabilities, and literally a built in web browser. And backwards compatibility with the PS1.
I have never owned a DS but I owned a DS lite and even though I will never have it again because me and my dad sold it for a 3DS XL(old version) it will still be my favourite portable console of all time

The GBA and GBA SP are backwards-compatible with original Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games and the Nintendo 3DS series are backwards-compatible with DS, DSi and 3DS games. Plus, the Sony PSP model I recommend getting is the PSP Go because the UMD drive was a silly idea to begin with and the PSP Go is game downloadable only. No need for stacking UMD game discs on shelves! ^_^
just putting this out there, but at 3:31 you wrap up talking about DS download play, which is cool and all, but the psp had the same thing, except it was called game sharing and it was mostly used for multiplayer in japanese games like naruto and bleach

Yup, you can tell when someone grew up in the 2000's when 'Ridge Racers' is some unknown title. Though there's one weird thing, I always thought the DS lite was the one with the weak hinge? Mind wore right off.
DS wins hands down. There's many reasons but one big one is the 2 screens and the bottom touch screen made you played games different and it was intuitive. Metroid Prime Hunters and Mario Kart DS are 2 examples where both screens are used perfectly. Also on Hunters you used the stylus which was very cool at the time.
the PSP pretty much able to be like the switch it doesn't work because it doesn't support external controllers without modding (I modded my PSP and built a PSP dock back in the day when the PSP was new, and I added a PS2 controller plug to it because it only makes sense to play a PSP game with a PS2 controller, since it's easier to mod to work unlike a PS3 controller which used USB which would be more difficult to get working since I'd have do more work programming it to work with PS3 controllers)
