In this beginner oriented video tutorial I will go over Slow Motion Video, or High Frame Rate Mode (HFR) as Sony calls it, using the Sony RX100 VI. Full Article Here: www.sonyalphal... I also show some examples of what the camera can do in the real world using the HFR feature in various frame rates. Thanks for watching, and be sure to ask questions or comment below as always!! Jay

@@Jason_Hermann Well, the Sony manual is not that good at explaining HFR operation. Even though I am not a photographic beginner, moving into HFR is new and I needed to understand the capabilities and triggering options especially since the amount of time you can use HFR modes is limited to seconds. After viewing your presentation, I was able to make the decision to buy a RX10M4 which operates in HFR like the RX100. I live among many birds, including hummingbirds, so I have the motivation to move beyond the recording capabilities of my A6000. The RX10M4 HFR and the 25x optical zoom is quite exciting. Unfortunately, the camera is also painfully expensive. Your review was among several I watched and read but was by far the best explaining Sony HFR. Thanks again.

Thank you for the video. I still don’ t get the relationship between frame rate and priority setting.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 19 дней назад
It prioritizes based on when you press the shutter button to start recording. So it can emphasize more captured frames before the shutter being pressed or after for example. The you have the quality option, which depending on how it set will potential skip a frame to maintain smooth footage sort of thing is how I understand it.
@Mokso

Thanks for the Video :) What is about the Exposure modes in slow motion? Like Auto exposure, aperture priority, shutter priority. Which one should i use outdoor with natural sunlight? Thank you :)
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I usually use aperture priority mode so I have the most control over the depth of field. You want to most light possible for the HFR mode, so I usually try and keep the lens wide open at f/2.8 or f/4.5 when zoomed to the max. This will make sure the ISO stays as low as possible and will yield you the cleanest looking footage.

I wonder if using the 240fps option but then exporting it to 60fps and then halving the speed in editing software actually produces even better slo-mo. Or if it's just duplicating the same frames you would have in the lower frame rate exports. Possibly the lower ones are missing some frames that you could work with, just a thought
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 месяца назад
Exporting at 60fps will just put it in that format not yielding you any more or less frames in the end that would make a difference. The purpose of that option is so you have the ability to match your other clips for a given project without having to convert again. I almost always use 24p for my video projects, so I usually have it set to that output myself and can then always speed up if I want in post.

Hi, thanks for the great introduction! May I ask a question? I recently have an rx1007, I tried super slow motion. My setting was 24p 50m, 240fps. Why most of the videos I got lasted only 1 second, while one or two reached 4 or 7 seconds (before editing). This is so confusing to me. How can I control the duration of a super slow motion on this machine? It's really disappointing as I can shoot slow motion on my iPhone with whatever duration I want. On sony, I had to turn to a HFR mode, then hit center button, then hit movie. For lots of situations, the scene has gone by then.....

I use FinalCut Pro X and when I hook the camera up, I just hit the import button and it then copies to my external drive for videos. The videos will also import into Lightroom which is nice if I want to keep a certain clip for the family as an example. That is all it's capable of doing in HFR Mode. You can get a few more seconds by changing it to time priority mode as opposed to quality priority mode though. It doesn't just record indefinitely like regular video though in HFR mode. Just small little bursts, so you must set-up your shot can time it carefully.

The memory card size has nothing to do with the HFR record time, it's just a limitation of the camera itself. Jay - good video, you helped me understand the quality tradeoffs between different frame rates and the difference between start and end trigger. My question: in shooting settings mode, prior to hitting record, is there no way to lock focus at a certain focal length via half press of shutter button?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 5 лет назад
Hi Jeff, no there is not. You must get out of the standby mode in order to focus, and then go back into standby mode in order to press record. The way around this is to switch the camera to manual focus and then it will be locked for sure on whatever you want. For example, use Auto focus to get it where you want, then switch to manual focus. The focus will then be locked on whatever you focused on last. Be sure not to touch the zoom and you should be good to go!

@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
Hello Robince and you are very welcome for the video and thanks for the comments/ question ;) For basic standing in front of the camera vlogging I would recommend using center weight metering mode if you plan on having your face in the center of the frame. This will insure your face is exposed properly regardless of the background brightness for example. Frame rate wise I would recommend 24p or 25p if that is what your camera has if shooting PAL. When in that mode your shutter speed should be double, so 1/50sec for that. Focus wise I would use the wide area focus mode and make sure facial recognition is turned on. It should be on by default. That will insure the camera prioritize your face. I would also consider setting your white balance to a fixed value for each different lighting condition, because it may wonder a bit if the lighting changes slightly and this makes it much harder in post processing when putting your various clips together if you want consistent color. I hope that helps and please let me know how you make out ;) All the best, Jay

I suppose it will depend on the frame rate too, since it has lot more data to capture and buffer at 960fps than 240fps. - Could you give us that info in detail please? Quality Priority vs Shoot time priority, is there a difference in Image quality or is the difference basically in the file duration/size as it will record longer in shoot time and take up more space?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 5 лет назад
Hello, Yes you have that about right. I have noticed when using shoot time priority however, I have gotten dropped frames. This has never happened when shooting in quality priority, so this may be the downside of the extra time. It happened on 2 clips out of about 20 I would say. The clip was still usable, but it had a black frame instead of the flawless sequence when shooting quality priority. So 24fps and 1 of those frames was black which I had to edit out of the clip... The image quality otherwise looked the same as far as I could tell. Good light is really the key to getting the best quality when using this mode. The camera has to jack up the ISO to very high levels in order to shoot at such high frame rates in lower light. This results in very grainy footage I have noticed, but with awesome very bright conditions, the footage looks great in 480 for example. In lower light, 480 looks like garbage however... I hope that helps? Jay

Can you tell me how to shoot a movie in slow motion (RX100vii, 120fps) as when I try to shoot it, and play it back, it does not slow down? Thanks
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
Hi Charles. Basically you set the camera to 120p and then you need to process that footage using a video editing program. For example I use Final Cut to edit my videos. When I create a video project I set the parameters of the video I am creating. One of those parameters is resolution and another parameter is frame rate. I always create my videos with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. Therefore, if I record a clip with the camera set to 120 frames per second, I can then retime that clip from 120fps to 24fps which will intern slow it down 5x speed and create the slow motion effect you are after. In short, this needs to be done in post processing and the camera does not create the slow motion video for you when using this mode. The reason being is so you can speed up and slow down the clip as desired to create very interesting videos. I hope that helps, Jay

Thank you very much I'm sure I will enjoy this camera as I have read so much about it. I have one other question for the expert though. Can you tell me what the Custom key operation is for? I wanted to set up my favorite operation and I believe that this is where I can do it but it won't save it? I wanted to set up continuous burst of, say 10fps, as I am shooting my grand-kids hockey game (when he gets a good shot) but I can't figure out how to save or set up this one function without always having to change the settings on the camera. Thanks for the great help, I tune into your "RU-vid" channel regularly but have only subscribed to it recently.

Thank you, but im kinda new to the camera thing. How did you do on slow motion and then back to normal speed within the same video? You did it by camera function itself or edited the speed externally in the computer?

I did that on my computer using final cut pro. There is no way to do that on the camera itself.

Jay, really enjoy these tutorial videos. I am using this camera at an indoor baseball facility to capture ball release from a pitcher's hand in 960 fps. The lighting is not that great, what are the best settings to capture video in hfr mode for low light conditions? Thank you
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
Yeah, I don't think you are going to want to use 960 in that lighting environment. I would go for 240fps and have the camera movie settings at 24p. The problem with this mode is how high the ISO will need to be in order to capture the frames per second required. If you have really great light, then you can use the higher frame rates and get good quality, but in low light the quality will be poor. For the best results with the RX100 VI I would have the camera set to f/2.8, 24mm and 240fps, @ 24p... That will yield you some awesome slow motion at the best quality possible. If you want even slower then try 480fps and see what kind of ISO numbers you are getting and that will reflect how good the quality of the footage looks. I hope that helps, Jay

@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 года назад
@@NanonerMcKologico YEah, 120fps will yield you better looking footage than the 240fps in most cases due tot he higher ISO required in lower light. In good light they will look pretty close though. But again, yes the 120p will yield better looking video quality, but not as much slow motion of course...

Great Video Jay!! I tried HFR 240fps Quality Priority Start Trigger at 30p 50M. I did this under a couple different conditions, one under incandescent lighting with the other under fluorescent lighting. I realize both situations are not the best but, it's currently raining outside. Both situations gave me consistent flickering results. I'm assuming it's all about the lighting I used. Would this be correct? Ray
@Jason_Hermann

Thanks and yes you're correct. The lights flicker at a specific frequency's and this will show up if the frame rate coincides. Clearly it did/ does ;)

Thanks Jay, The rain let up in which I had a quick chance to give it another try outside. Worked great under natural light. Thank you for the great video! I'm definitely going to use this mode, especially on nice sunny days.... LOL. Ray 👍😊

Raymond Sherman Anytime, and remember, the brighter the conditions the better for HFR! The ISO tends to get jacked up by the camera for the high frame rate modes due to the shutter speed requirements, so if it's dim the ISO will be really high and the footage more grainy. Super bright out and the slow-mo looks awesome even with 480fps....

Is there an actual difference in quality between the modes in terms of resolution or is it just that the shutter speed needs to be higher therefore less light and higher iso causes grain?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 5 лет назад
Yes, the resolution is lower on the higher frame rate modes, but mostly the higher ISO is what causes so much grain. You really need awesome light to keep the ISO down do to the higher shutter speeds for the higher frame rates to look good.

Question : if you choose 60 p and 240 fps, can you turn it into "480fps - 30p" in your editing software ??? With good quality i mean...
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
That is a great question, and technically yes. I don't know if the quality will be better though, because I have not tested it and the bit rate is still 60M for both 30P and 60P. So, 60p is going to have less quality than 30p because of that don't forget. Great idea worth trying though for sure ;)

Hi Jay. I'm looking for a camera, not expensive, to use to record slow motion in a booth. For example, instead of having a Photo Booth it would be a Video Booth, but I need a camera that can also playback the slow-motion footage directly from the camera. So as soon as I recorded the scene, people can look at it without going to post-production or editing. Can this camera do that? Which other cameras can do that? Thanks!
@Jason_Hermann

Yes, it can but would be way to slow for what you are trying to do in my opinion. I'm honestly not sure what would be best for that unique application, sorry.

When you poured the Guinness (my fav) I noticed that it seemed to record for much longer - or is that my imagination. My question to you is... how many seconds can you actually film with this camera? When you used the 'End Record Button' you seemed to just tap it once and it recorded several seconds prior to pressing it. So how did you get the Guinness (yum) pour to go for much longer?> Thanks for the tutorial. Well done.
