Few months ago I acquired an absolutely mint Sony STR-7045 with walnut case (!). It’s pretty much identical to the 6055 you show. When I recapped mine I noticed that all my original grey electrolytics tested much higher than spec like yours did. Curious 🧐. I did replace any audio coupling caps with film types, tho. You didn’t mention that there is not one single integrated circuit chip in the receiver-everything is discrete. Maybe this is why this receiver has the only FM tuner I have found that doesn’t make birdie and chirping noises when in the same room as my WiFi router 👍. The whole “preamp” section of this receiver is that little circuit board behind the front panel, which means removing the whole front panel and all the knobs, etc. Be careful not to touch the lettering on the back of the tuner glass! No Windex (or anything else)! That lettering is very fragile. The best thing about these Sony receivers is the service manual Sony published for them. Best service manual I’ve ever encountered. It not only illustrates in a highly usable way all the how’s and why’s of servicing the unit, but also covers the design philosophy behind the circuitry. There is a unique speaker protection circuit in there that requires no output fuses nor relays. Like you, I thoroughly enjoyed servicing the unit almost as much as I enjoy the sound (on KEF LS-50 Meta’s on my desktop).
I have the 6055. Cost £100 Works fine except no AM band which is not a problem as I only listen to FM and phono. I am very pleased with it. I even sorted the back light for the meter by using a green marker pen as it had faded! They are good units.
I have been a Marantz Guy since 1973 beginning with the 2270. I now have a Marantz 2215B and recently acquired Sony 7065A and HK 430 Twin Powered receivers. As much as I love the Marantz, the Sony and HK sound incredible as well. I enjoy the different sound signature of these special, never to be made again, pieces of audio Nirvana. (All played through Klipsch speakers.)
Just picked one of these up for $40 cad. Needs a new light but everything else works great and sounds killer! How hard is it to install a LED or should i stick to a regular bulb?
