I just purchased this same make/model a week ago (aug2021) for $12.50 on an online auction, and I am pretty confident that mine is just a lubrication issue (I only hope!) Anyways I feel fortunate to come across your videos on this particular player Jim, it was perfect so Thanks very much!👍😉🇨🇦
The 1-3,2-4 switch refers to which head pickups are active (4 tracks). The normal 4 track tape is setup so that when it runs in one direction, you use track 1&3. When done, you turn the tape around, and what was tracks 2&4 are now 1&3. In this case, some educational tapes were setup to not to reverse the reals, but you were able to select 2 different channels (A/B). e.g. A book in English on A and in Spanish on B.
There seems to be two versions of this tape deck one Vacuum tube and the other solid state units and I think that it should be able to extract the complete unit after removing the retaining screws, if you are not sure how to remove the case have a chat with RU-vidr Clydesight as he has repaired a similar unit.
Jim, see if you can remove the bottom panel, this should give you access to more mechanical parts and the record button switch. The amp and pre-amp are mainly under the panel where the knobs are. Good Luck!
That "ISO" (inside a bolt) silkscreen there on the chassis indicates that the instrument uses standardized metric fasteners. It should be assumed that all (most) other mechanical dimensions she sports are metric. I say "most" because, as an example, the poles and gaps in the tape heads are likely dimensioned in "english".
