Also on my way too! I am learning to restore multitrack reel to reel machines... teac, tascam, otari, ampex etc... it has become my new life passion. As well as recording original music with them with my band and friends...
Thanks so much for this video. I wasn't aware of the fan-motor capacitor substitute. I have a TC-105 in 4-track mono, and a TC-230 stereo 'audio center' recorder with the walnut-veneer case & lid. The 105 would play normally for about a half hour, then slow way down. My 230 wouldn't play at all unless I started the motor spinning (a previous owner took the fan-cover off the bottom for this) So I transferred the capacitor from my Sony 230 parts machine. After that, it would start and play normally - for about 10 minutes. Then slow down just like the other one. Meanwhile, I ordered a 1.5/450V fan capacitor for the 105 (the OE part was rated at 300V) It's installed now and the 105 has been playing flawlessly at the correct speed for several hours. Just got one of the same in 250V, which matches the OE rating in my 230, and hope to install it next week. By the way, when I was spin-starting the 230 motor, I discovered I could spin it to run backwards!🙂
I recently was given the same unit and it has the same problem.I sent away for a new motor run capacitor.I'm going to install it in a few days.Hopefully my problem with it will be over.
it should be fixed an when you replace the cap youl notice how quiet it is but the sad thing youl have to re record music that was recorded on it cause the speed will be back to normal XD
Are you still enjoying open-reel? I've been messing around with it since before I could drive - more than 50 years ago, and have qute a collection now. A hybrid Sony TC-200 was my first stereo reel machine.
Thanks for this vid man! Super helpful in giving me an idea how to change the capacitor in my TC-355. Question though, what’s your mission with the music recordings? Are you just trying to get your music onto tape?
On those Wollensaks, the motor runs at constant speed, regardless of the speed setting. If it plays runs normally at 7.5, it should do the same at 3.75. The two speeds are dependant on the condition & operation of two separate flywheel drive idlers. For the past few years, I've been using an older T-1500 tube machine to make mono recordings of vintage and classical music off my computer. The 3.75 seed has a bit of flutter, but I only use the 7.5 speed for music, and that works perfectly.
@@axelthefoxytechworld8024 On mine the start/run capacitor values are 1.50uf and 0.5uf and i am wondering if i can use a fan capacitor rated at 2uf and 250v The way i understand it either the 1.5 is for start or run and the 0.5uf could be the same so am not sure. How would a 2uf do both jobs, start and run? Thank you
I'd find a way to objectively measure that your tape speed at the capstan pinch roller IS in fact 3.75 or 7.5 IPS, before you went and redid all those albums. Can you procure a frequency test tape? usually they have 1000 Hz, 10khs, 15khz, 100Hz, and 50Hz, then you can test those tones against a generated pitch on Audacity.
im good the reasion why it was to fast was cause the orginal motor start cap was bad an was slowing the motor down thats why they were playing to fast thanks anyway
