I think you should start a series called "Quick Take:" or something similar. That way you feel free to make the quicker videos different, and the viewers know when they click on a video without that title, they're still going to get the extreme detail 100% of the time. Both preserves the brand and gives you freedom.
I really appreciate how fast he get down to business. 5-second hook, 4-second theme song, 4 second non-sequitur, and then straight onto the topic. Just long enough to get my attention and to adjust my thinking mode for Gerald Undone absorption. He does not waste my time. It's respect for the audience.
I moved away from full frame years ago because lugging a DSLR and the glass was killing my back. I moved back to FF because mirrorless cameras are so much smaller these days... and with glass like these lenses I'm a happy camper once more. Happy with your alternative presentation style too 😁
I have a lot more respect for reviewers and your reviews in particular after watching MKBHDs iPhone hour long review. I understand the pressure of feeling the need to release a video at the lift of the embargo. I think this video and these style of videos have more than enough information and I’d love to see more similar videos in the future! However, I don’t want the pressure from these videos affect the depth of a classic Undone video.
It really needs a side by side comparison to 40mm. I am not convinced the 35mm F1.8 is sharper by any means. He might be coming at from using it more as a video lens than a photo lens. Sure the F1.8 is faster, but it is not very sharp for its first two stops
Apologizing for his video format when he could fart into the mic and it still be 10x better than most film channels is peak Canadian energy and I love it.
Gerald, YOUR loose style works because you have a wonderful grounding and mental process going into it. You start from a highly professional spot, so when you "relax," it is still quite good. Like most the rest here, I enjoy what you have to say and how you say it.
If Gerald's videos were high information and low production value, I probably would not subscribe, and I certainly would not watch videos about products (like these) that I am not particularly interested in. But this is a high quality presentation, so I don't really get your point. It's factual, comes from a reliable source, and it's made clear from the beginning that it is not in-depth.
Gerald - I love getting more videos with what you seem to think is less polish. You're still giving the amazing in-depth info that I'm looking for from your videos, and your delivery is warmer and more approachable. I love the more polished videos, too. but I actually prefer this.
I got exactly what I wanted to know from this video; these are not the lenses I’ve been waiting for! Also, I now have no desire to watch any other videos on these lenses so that was a huge time saver for me. Thanks Gerald
I like the ranting. More of these please. Especially if they are less work for you. At the end of today I’m still more informed than if I didn’t watch this video
Ah, at the very end you mention the sony 35 f1.8. Thanks for this. I get so hung-up by the "G" and "GM" lenses, I don't even look at their non G-glass. Now I will!
Your, quickly thrown together, video is better and more detailed than most people's in-depth analysis. Absolutely love the idea of some of these quick thoughts videos.
Great video as always, regarding the lenses: 24mm f2.8 - that distortion is crazy. Honestly just save up for the 24mm f1.4 and enjoy this wonderful lens. Haven't heard anyone talking bad about it and I myself use in 90% of the time. You won't regret it and the value is really good, even if it's expensive... 40mm f2.5 - why not get the 35mm f1.8? You lose the aperture ring but gain a full stop, the price is the same. 50mm f2.5 - same here, why not the awesome awesome 55mm f1.8? If you like the focal length, this thing is a beast! (I love it but don't use it very often) In other words, these lenses have been released too late. I love the design thoug and wish **all** Sony lenses came with that design language. Imagine the 90mm Macro and 55mm reworked to this
I agree about the 24mm, it has terrible distortion and is not that sharp. The 40mm is a winner, it’s terrific for landscape, better handling of CA and flare than the 35mm 1,8. The 50mm, I agree you may as well go for the 55, but the 50G is really nice and has really nice bokeh and is
I am a new subscriber specifically because of your quick/hot take on these new lenses. Saved me time and got to the meat of it. I like the cadence of speeding through the specs and comparison with minimal time wasted. A lot of information and quick. Thanks man!
I'm a first time watcher, and my new-to-me Sony is on the way to me. So I got a lot of value from this because I plan to buy some light primes to get started. Thank you.
I love this kind of undone style, its more simple yet much informative than many of those reviewer out there. I think done it once in a while is a good thing
This style of video is great. Specifically when it's something like this when it's a group of things that aren't so super cool/new that they deserve a long video and you already know enough about the general features that you don't need to do a huge, in-depth review. I like it and I'd rather have these so we get more videos per-month!
These unscripted "information dump" videos are perfect for the people that want to watch them: enthusiasts who just want to know. To many of us, you're a solid "gut check" on new things, and I think you're spot-on with your assessment of how we will receive this. We appreciate you taking the extra time to toss this one out, and I think we'd love to see more videos like this. As someone pointed out above in a different comment, MKBHD's long-form iPhone video was illuminating to the pressures reviewers face. We'd definitely want you to cut yourself some slack around review embargo time, the quality of this video was still excellent in my opinion, and the length was good too. I'd want you to focus your time on topics that aren't time-sensitive. I still re-watch your videos on sony gamma curves regularly just to make sure I understand the topic, and it's in those tech deep-dives that your unique blend of presentation and explanation vault your videos above anything else on the web.
Gerald. Any content from you is content we will enjoy. Whether it be full on Undone, or 'half-baked' Undone. Your half-baked is still better than most other fully baked videos out there in regards to quality of information and value. Keep them coming and thanks as always!
Thanks for the info. I don't understand this 2.8, 2.5 f-stops though. These G Lenses should be faster at 1.8. Been waiting for Sony to update their older 50mm 1.8 with the newer faster focusing motors. With the f 1.2 & now this 2.5, I don't imagine they will come out with the f1.8 I've been waiting for. bummer.
@@kifley19 I’m ok with that. Something about the same range as their 85mm 1.8, which I own and love. The 50mm 1.8 would be a great companion to it, especially for video on the a7siii.
With product reviews I'm here for your opinon and use case on products, who are they for, do you recommend it and what is the best value compared to other offerings. I usally skip the middle, and watch the first minute and last 3-5 minutes because that is what is most valuable for myself. However, when you are teaching something, like how to build sound panels I will multiple times from start to finish.
This is the kind of lens i was hoping so badly for when I switched from micro four thirds. Thank you sony! Great video too, i enjoy this off-the-cuff style.
Well I liked your rambling a lot - think it's still more detailed than a lot of other reviews on here. So, if you find the time to squeeze some of those in here and there, I'm sure gonna watch them :)
FYI, I watched about half of this when you released it and enjoyed it then, but came back to it when I was actually considering buying the Sony 24mm and bought the Sigma instead based on your recommendation. I appreciate your work, and your recent stuff in particular!
I like Gerald’s rants. This video gave me enough info to let me decide I could justify the 50mm. But I’d want to spend a little more on the 35mm and I’m happy with the 20mm f1.8 that I bought last year. You could totally do more of these little rants.
More Gerald is always a yes! Your insight is always a huge dealmaker or breaker for me when I'm looking to buy new gear so I'm all for more info from your end.
Given Sony that trusts you enough to submit so many products to you to review, I think this format is perfect for products like this. Of course, I really appreciate the kind of full on professional review for something like a $2,000 50mm f/1.2 GM before I pre-order it, but I think this format is great for these types of things. Thanks!
Gerald i guess Sony 24 is wider due to shorter length than Sigma. Only way to findout is to keep both at same distance from subject, measured front element of lens.
If you're looking for the ultimate 24mm, take a look at the 24mm f2.8 Elmarit from Leica. Put the images in Lightroom and just marvel at not having to correct for anything...well almost!
It's stupid that a "not so good Gerald Undone video" is better than 90% of the other reviews out there. If this format works for you, mate, please keep 'em coming, because they're helpful as always.
Excellent review as always Gerald! Maybe Sony created these lenses somewhat with their Airpeak drone in mind, what do you think? They kind of remind me of DJIs line of inspire lenses
At least we got those sweet EF prices! 40mm 2.8 whaaaaat?! Also I think that's the first time I've ever heard a Canon shooter mention Sony in a positive light for their lens prices lol. Even if you covered your bases and threw in the 'relatively' there, smart man.
Love your stuff, Gerald. But here's one data point from me: I think these off-the-cuff videos are a good format for getting reviews out quickly. I see it as a win-win for both the audience and creators. But I do have some points, though. Without a chance to script your videos, you do repeat points and drop in more filler phrases than usual--sometimes second-guessing your own evaluations (and the format of the video itself lol). It doesn't undermine the credibility you've built at all, but it does drag the pace of the video down. I'm sure these are just kinks to be ironed out. Again, love your work!
I’m curious why you say the Sony’s have better build quality? The Sigma lenses are metal build vs plastic of the Sony. And the Sigma are actually listed as dust and splash resistant... which is better than the dust and moisture resistance that the Sony is rated for.
You're quick videos are better than some regular review videos. If it's a way for you to get content out quicker or on par with the other early access reviewers, I say do it.
Your version of Unscripted was very informative while being equally as personal. I will always be a fan of the polished deep dive reviews. Thats really getting Undone. My best relatable scenario is watching you give a ted talk on stage and you giving that same talk at the a table in a bar the night before you were going on stage. Great content thank you for getting this one out!
We love you "Gerald undone" type video but also this one, I think a change is good👍👍keep it doing if you can make more videos that way, anyway I personally love it ❤️❤️👍
Not sure if this sounds weird but I don't come for the "so good" videos, I come for your personality and your point of view These unscripted videos are perfect (to prove I'm here for you: I'm not in the Sony ecosystem yet I'll be watching the whole video)
I think the in depth videos are useful for the significantly more expensive lenses and the one intended to replace them and the condensed ramble videos are good for the cheaper lenses
