We are replacing a power jack in a Sony VAIO PCG-81115L (VPC-F136FM) at www.TimsComputerFix.net. We will walk you through the tear down, the repair of the jack and then getting things put back together.
Thanks for this video Tim. I've been meaning to refurb an old laptop for a while, the main problem being that the charging port broke. I've become a lot more confident in my CPU hardware maintenance in the last year or so, and will gladly attempt to fix this problem myself now, thanks to your excellent tutorial.
Excellent instructive video with tips to make the process easy and to keep out of trouble. Even with all screws removed, however, the tight-fitting case was a bit tricky to get apart the first time around.Yes, because of this video, l have been called on to repair more than one. Wish all instructional videos could be this detailed and easy to use. FIVE STARS !!!
Tim, Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your step-by-step video was easy to follow and the close-up shots of the components was very helpful. The fact that you included info. on modifying the bracket that covers the power jack definitely saved me some grief :) Without ever having disassembled my laptop before, I was able to successfully replace the jack without any issues. I truly appreciate your help :) Thanks again & have a lovely day, Kristin :)
could not figure out for the life of me why the power supply kept throwing the safety circuit. never thought about the grounding clip shorting it out, thank you my friend
Thanks so much for posting this! Just completed the replacement of my DC jack. This is the exact computer I have and it now works like a champ! Great instruction!
Thank you for your reply. In my case the center of the socket is damaged. The center piece is missing exposing 2 pins. Yesterday I had trouble finding the full cable. I finally did find the cable for about $7 on eBay and ordered it. Thanks, Ken
Excellent video, thanks to this I've added a year or two more to my vaio, especially relevant now that Sony has pulled out of the laptop market. Gave it a good cleanout too. The only thing I did differently was I didn't see the need to remove the keyboard, but apart from that thanks a ton!
Nice job Tim, I tend to put some heat shrink sleeving over any exposed terminals on new power jacks. (just to be on the safe side) Thanks for the great video.
Thanks Tim - excellent break down. I've got a Sony PCG - 8158P which appears to have been dropped and caught by the power supply cord before the laptop hit the floor. As such, the aluminium or cast muck metal frame holding the power jack has snapped off leaving the power jack to float around in the side of the laptop. Do you know if it is possible to get replacements for the mounting frame for the power jack?
If you are going to take on a power jack repair for the first time I would say this model would be the perfect one to start with. No soldering involved. Just follow my video step by step and you should be fine. Just make sure you order the jack after the broken one is out. That way you can match it up with the one you order online. Good Luck
I would first confirm that your power adapter itself is working. Use a mutimeter to confirm or try a known good power adapter. I would also remove the battery and try powering on with only the power adapter plugged in. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
Much appreciated, I will be attempting this same repair on a Sony Vaio PCG-71314L in the next week. I will be sure to keep everyone posted on how this works out. Thank you!!
Excellent video. Had the exact same problem with the exact same model. It's a shame I don't have the power plug. But thanks anyway. Cheers from Brazil!
love this vid, helped me replace my jack on my vaio pcg f12. only prob is i have to angle the charger cable a certain way before charge light comes on. is there a way to stabilise the new jack so itll just charge without having to wiggle it ??
Sorry for the delayed response. Unfortunately I believe that you have a issue with the charging circuit on the motherboard. The only way that I repair that is by replacing the motherboard. Thanks for watching.
Great Video men i a IT students and having a problem with my Sony vaio and i cant find the documentation of the Pc this video show me very good how to replace the DC jack thank a lot
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I am about to repair my nieces laptop and it is this EXACT make and model with the exact same problem. I love the flat gray/black flat tool that you are using. IT appears as though one side has a flat prying surface and the other a pointed end. Can you tell me where I can get that exact tool PLEASE?
my vaio (same model) has got a blinking power light when i plug the charger and it doesn't turn on. does it mean that the power jack is broken or another hardware problem? (i've already tried remove the battery and use another charger)
Thank you, this helped me fix one of my two problems. My laptop works now, when plugged in. Unfortunately, it is unable to "detect" any battery(new or old) that I put in it. It only stays on as long as it's plugged in. At this point, I'm almost certain that there's something wrong with the area where the battery connects to the board. Is this fixable? I would appreciate a little help in determining my options. I have a vaio, the same one in this video. Thank you again.
Thanks so much Tim. I finally got around to doing this and everything worked great in terms of replacing the jack. Got power to the computer, but now its telling me it can't find the operating system. Any ideas?
Hello, i made the replacement like in youre video. I have a strong "whining" (like cpu whining) from the replaced dc Jack when the laptop is idling. Its definitly from the DC Jack, because when i trun the cable it changes the noise and i hear it really clearly and i get crazy from it. do you have the same? the original one was quiet.
Hi Tim, your guide was most helpful to me when fixing my dc jack. The steps were different for dis-assembly because I have a different model (PCG-61A11L), but was more or less the same. I installed the new jack but now for some reason my VAIO won't turn on? It shows the charging light is on when I plug it in, but I only get a response from the laptop when I take my battery out and put it back in. The screen and other lights turn on and turn right back off in about 5 secs. Any suggestions?
I have this exact model laptop. Unfortunately, I've had had my power jack replaced twice by an authorized Sony technician. The thing is, I've had nothing but issues with my Mobo and GPU since the repairs. Sony says they can't help since I'm now out of warranty. My question is what exactly would/could happen if the metal bracket were to ground out the jack?
I have Sony VAIO PCG-91311L. The power jack is broken. I try to replace it. Cloud you tell me where I can get right power jack for my laptop? I have searched on the Internet, but cannot find right one. Thank you!
Hi Tim. I'm was wondering... I need to repair (or have repaired) my power jack and this makes it look pretty simple. I'm not really a computer whiz or anything and am wondering, would it be crazy to do this myself having very little experience? I don't want to ruin an expensive laptop. Also, if its not too hard, are there any additional tips you have for a novice?
Thanks for this video. Mine finally ust stopped working after all the "sweet spots" wore out. i have my prongs bent inwards to hold iyt firmly until i can get my replacement part. Again, thank you for this video. You know how it is im sure, when your prized PC dies and you dont have the finds to go buy a new one.
I'm glad that I have seen this. I haven't been able to use my laptop for a year because of this issue. I have asked several people who are more computer smart that I am, and who have experience fixing computers about this problem and both said that I would have to replace the motherboard. So, being short on money I haven't considered doing that until now, but after seeing this I realize it is not a motherboard problem. At one point, or with other laptops, was replacing the motherboard the correct solution?
Thanks for the video. You mention using a voltmeter to check for shorts, how would you do that on this model. Thanks. (Reason I ask is that I put mine back together and now there's no power whatsoever, so hoping there's a short somewhere).
***** You can test for voltage where the jack is plugged into the board. I would test on the pin side under the board where the jack is plugged into. You do this of course while the power cord is plugged in being careful not to cross + and - . You should be reading 19v
TimsComputerRepair Ran into an issue because my Sony has a CD-ROM. I'm having an issue removing the back panel in that area. Much thanks if you could offer advice.
Paul Englander Depends on the model. If all of the screws are out from the bottom I have seen where there may be a screw under the keyboard that is securing the back panel. Try removing the keyboard first but remember. NEVER FORCE ANYTHING!
Im repairing a broken laptop for a friend, and that bracket you had to modify (as well as the original connector you screwed into it) is missing entirely. I ordered a replacement power port (missing cable included), but can I just leave that bracket out completely?
Thanks for the video. Have a Sony VAIO PCG-81114L. Instructions were basically identical. Save me a bunch of money switching out a part that cost me $12 on amazon myself. Only thing I did differently from the video was not remove the keyboard or the ram.
Hey, great video! my Viao is the same model and i think the power jack is the issue. the green power light will flash off and on, and no post screens appear. just flashes. is the jack the issue?
+Master Don Doesn't sound like the jack. Remove the battery and try. You will have to measure voltage from the adapter and where the jack plugs into the board.
Great video! Question: Is there any reason at 10:10 you didn't add some electrical tape or some other non-conductive material between your modified bracket and the metal lead for extra safety? Would it cause a heat problem? is it just not necessary?
Hi I have the VAIO VPCF136FM/B but I removed the ower jack from a vaio sr 390 but it does not have the ground wire that I saw in your vidoe can i still use it or will my latop crash and burn
Hello, my name is David and I live in Brazil, working in a technical assistance on notebooks and I have a Sony Vaio PCG-81114L, initially he did not recognize the battery, but I changed the CI Charger (BQ24753A) and he now he recognizes, it shows charging but does not charge. My operational system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bits. On Vaio Control Center my battery shows as Critical, i change the battery but nothing change, Can you help me?
I've got a machine with the same issue (I can see the two pins where the AC Adapter gets plugged in, so I guess the plastic barrel part has been lost) but I don't have the AC adapter itself - anyone know which model adapter to buy? The machine's a VPCF130D, PCG-81214L. 19.5V input. The power jack that gets installed inside the laptop seems to be readily available on Amazon, Ebay, etc.
answered my own question regarding the power supply. A friend has the same laptop, working, and has the power supply. I had a look and it has these numbers on it: pa-1900-12SY, and vgp-AC19V35, Input: 100-240V~1.5A, 50/60Hz, Output: 19.5V 4.7A, I've read that it's a 4.4mm barrel for the connector. I assume it doesn't have to be a Sony original - any power supply with the same output voltage and amps and the same size barrel connector should work. For my own case I'm going to need to buy both a new power supply and the new power jack part Tim describes in his video.
I have a PCG 81214L. I have fixed the power jack and keyboard. All has been good for a few months but since yesterday i can no longer power up. No lights on laptop. Battery must be good since it worked the day before. I have tried a couple power supplies still dead. Removed battery and tried to power up with just power supply, no luck. No lights anywhere other than light on power supply. Any thoughts? Can not find much on this laptop. If my CMOS battery died would that prevent any power up action? No lights dead.
So I did this repair without modifying the power jack bracket. I forced fit and I think I left metal contacting metal. What did I likely mess up in the motherboard by doing that. The power adapter does not want to play with the laptop anymore.
hey tim, i have the same problem. i ordered a dc jack that is exactly like yours, i did your mod and all, and it works, but if i wobble it a little it still disconnects sometimes... could it be the charger's jack that expanded a little inside and sometimes doesn't make contact? dunno if buying another charger will solve it for me :/ thanks for video, helped me going inside without fearing to damage it
i have the same laptop..can i get the part number for the replacement jack? or can i order direct from you. I'm tired of placing heavy books on my jack just to keep it charging.
I have a PCG-81214L, I noticed I can buy just the black socket. Is there enough play such I could cut off the bad socket and solder on the new one. Would save time opening the bottom of the laptop. The socket is less than $5, thanks
I will soon be doing the same repair to my mothers laptop. She dropped it and it cracked the dc jack and broke off the plastic where the screw for the ground lead goes into. Is there any possible way to work around this?
maynardjesus You could try just not grounding the power jack cable. That is there for extra grounding protection however it is not necessary. Of course if you could find a way to get that cable grounded it would be a better way to go.
Hello, Mr.Tim I have a Sony Vaio PCG-7133l and I’m trying to do the same exact thing your doing, so my concern is my laptops older then this one, so how can I make sure I order the right size, and release the bottom port from its hindges safely 2/sided plates
TimsComputerRepair I got to it safely, now I'm just stuck on a part that's locking the power jack in place, but I was able to safely unplug it, the only mishap I had thankfully nothing major, was the plastic bracket that just snapped from the thing, (trying to use force to open the laptop to try to gain access, but it still opens and closes no problem, I sent a email to show you the progress hoping for some advice on your recommendation, I'm trying to learn how to repair computers (something I'm very interested in learning)
Tim, yer a champion. It just so happens I've got a PCG-81111W, very close to the model you repaired so deftly.I've no doubt I can manage it, but where on earth can I source a new jack and harness like yours? The systems are virtually identical they might as well be the same. Can you help? Is there a part number? I am tearing my hair out? Thanks,Robert
I disconnected the cmos battery and I was able to boot to a point because my hard drive was in. I get a message stating no operating system found. If I connect the cmos battery I can boot one more time but after that no more until I disconnect the cmos battery again then connect or leave disconnected. What I did next was connect the laptop battery, connect the cmos battery and then and only then I was able to boot multiple times. I put it all back together and its been working. I can't figure out why just adding the laptop battery along with the power supply made the difference?
Great I was looking for something like that long time ago. How much is the new Power Jack?, and does it suit for another Sony Vaio model? Mine is VPCEA16FA.
