Check out this new Sony Car Stereo! The XAV-AX6000 features Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, 5 volt pre-amp, iDatalink Maestro compatibility, rear USB C input PLUS a Micro HDMI input. In this video I explain what adapters will be needed to utilize this micro HDMI input for either Apple or Android.
**UPDATED NOTE** PAC Audio now makes a convenient all in one flush mount solution, the MHDMIUSBC: bit.ly/3MiTDpD
The whole reason I made this video is I had a client that really wanted to go with the XAV-AX6000 and utilize the HDMI with his Samsung S20. However, he couldn't bring his phone into the shop for me to test and confirm functionality and Sony wasn't able to tell me with 100% certainty that the adapters I wanted to use would work. Not only did it need to be compatible with his phone, but we needed to be able to mount the HDMI in a clean, flush way in the dash which required a total of 4 parts.
The whole reason I was hesitant is I have seen issues with Alpine whenever trying to use anything other than a straight HDMI to HDMI input. We once had a Toyota Tacoma where we had found a flush mount HDMI accessory specifically for one of the factory knockouts, BUT the backside of the adapter had a micro HDMI and the radio had standard HDMI. Even with adapters in place it didn't work. Alpine explained with THEIR car stereos, you couldn't use any adapters - just straight HDMI to whatever phone adapter. And although Sony couldn't guarantee what I was trying to do would work, they sounded more hopeful that with quality adapters, it would work. Thankfully it all worked!
Of course, Android was a bit quirkier in getting the HDMI to function compared to Apple, but you'll have to watch to see what I mean about quirky. Eventually I got it going using a Samsung S21 for testing. I will say the client's S20 was a bit glitchier, but I did also eventually get his working too.

Instead of a flush mount can you just use a HDMI MALE to HDMI Female. Connect the HDMI cable into the USB-C to HDMI Female???? I have a Sony xav-ax8500. It's the EXACT SAME SETUP

Have you tried connecting your phone via HDMI to a TV or another HDMI device just to rule out if this is a phone issue or radio issue? The main thing that usually trips this up is you have to first disable the Android Auto connection. Try turning off Wi-Fi on your phone.

Been watching your channel lately. I'm choosing a stereo for my next audio install in a Pontiac G8. I have looked at these Sony stereos and, while 5V is great, I was initially not interested in them because they only support 5-channel preamp outputs. I will be running it to an 8-channel DSP amp and a monoblock for my one DVC sub. What disadvantage does a 5- versus 6-channel stereo have? The sub is the RF Punch P3D4-12 and as stated has two VCs ran from a monoblock Infinity amp (which has two RCA inputs). Will that be okay with only one RCA cable connected to it? I have another question too. Since I am ditching my Pioneer MVH-1400NEX cap. touchscreen without Android Auto mainly because of it's UI, what do you recommend that is on the market that has a great UI? I was really considering the Alpine ILX-507 but the only 'real people not actors' review on YT is yours and gives it off as a letdown, I am not quite sure anymore what stereo to go to. I'm really interested in something that has a nice, responsive display and features for SQ that are not already present in the DSP amp I have like HV preamp outs, DAC, hifi Bluetooth Codec(s), and also wired/less Android Auto. Thanks for the preamp voltage review! That video is super interesting and would so be something I'd do when I'd have the time and equipment. Great job; keep it up 👌
@carstereochick
@carstereochick Год назад
Hi Caelin, thanks so much for watching! Great question. It won't make any difference in your particular set up between 5-channel or 6-channel because you're using a mono amp which is doing left and right mixed stereo anyways. If you were running two separate subs and a 2-channel amp and running separate left and right stereo to the two different subs, then it might be something to consider. I also haven't had a chance to do the pre-amp test on the Sony XAV-AX6000, that will be coming up in the next 3-4 weeks. That will be interesting to see! Regarding user interface, that is really a personal opinion. I will say the Sony interface seemed pretty intuitive. And I am personally very used to Kenwood's interface, it's not super pretty, but I know my way around and have also learned my way around the new Alpine set up. And although the iLX-507 screen isn't quite as responsive as I would have liked it to be, the iLX-F509 and iLX-F511 have a more responsive screen so the floating screens are something to consider as well. I appreciate your candid feedback about the reviews! Although I am sorry if it came off as a let down. I try to pick apart everything that I sell because I try to look at all of through the lens/filter of a client. I try to point out the things I know my clients might or will take issue with. The reality is every head unit has its pro's and con's, none are perfect, so there is always usually some kind of trade off. I try to lay it all out for clients to decide what will work best for them based on what features/functions are most important to them. Thanks so much for the encouragement and kind words! Much appreciated :)

@@carstereochick I’ll also follow this commenter as I’m planning on adding in an amp with the stock audio system with my 08 Toyota Solara. I got a Sony AX6000 and it integrated easily with my steering wheel buttons with just an adapter. Install was clean without a spaghetti of wires to decode. I wanted to see how it sounded through the stock speakers before I decided if I wanted to add an amplifier maybe better speakers. I’m doing it a bit at a time so I don’t spend a bunch all at once with lackluster results. Sound quality definitely improved and the UI is easy to play with and figure out without referencing the manual (might need to for some of the more obscure adjustments).I also had a backup camera put in at the same time, image is reversed I just discovered and I’ve seen videos on that issue. I plan to troubleshoot it myself before nagging the installer. Going with a low power amp first based on installers recommendation and see it how it sounds before moving to the speakers. My factory setup has 4 speakers and a subwoofer so changing stuff won’t be a nightmare. I’m fine with that, just want the best sound quality with the volume I want. Being a convertible once the tops down outside noise really drowns it out. I want to fix that. One benefit I found out after the fact is the AX6000 has “idata-link maestro” tech which is supposed to make integration with newer cars and all the extra functions a lot easier. It also uses a nifty UI setup just for it. My car unless I added those functions in I can’t use it, but it’s nice that it’s there.

Hi there - I have some links in the video description, but I believe PAC Audio now makes a much more convenient combo port that goes from Micro HDMI male and USB C male on the back of the head unit straight to HDMI female with USB C female. Same idea/size as the one you see in the video, but it's a much simpler all in one solution. Look up PAC Audio MHDMIUSBC. Good luck!

Uhhhhmmmm, thanks for showing me how RU-vid works via HDMI. But just curious....why couldn't you have just recorded a video in landscape or gone to Netflix or something? Also, not sure I'm understanding the purpose of the flush mount HDMI. In theory it looks wonderful but I'm thinking about real world use....where that hdmi cable is going to live in the car for the rest of it's existence. So now you've just got this cable connected to the flush mount and is all up in everyone's business even when it's not being used. That's why I'm just snaking the cord from under the dash and gonna set up a wire-wrangler system. When it's not in use (which is gonna be most of the time) it's coiled up & out of sight with velcro (unless you know where to look). Also went with a 10 ft cord so it can be accessible to EVERY passenger seat without them having to pass the phone or something. Same with the USB-c port. Got a 10 foot cable so that anyone in the vehicle can charge their phone. Also got a 6.6 foot that will connect to the center console that will be accessible to everyone. And a 3.3 foot one for the front seat passengers to use.

SO that is exactly what I advised the client to do, but as some clients are very particular about placement, access and usage when they are dropping $700+ on an upgrade. This is how he wanted it and honestly, this is a common request from our clients. He wasn't planning on using the HDMI all the time so when not in use, he wanted it to look clean and flush. Most clients I work with tend to prefer to have their USB inputs and HDMI inputs like that so when they're not in use, the interior doesn't look cluttered with cables. The main reason I made this video is the more adapters you add, the less likely this would all work. With Alpine for example, you cannot go from an HDMI to an HDMI mini back to HDMI (which is how some flush mount adapters work). If you're going to flush mount with Alpine, has to be straight HDMI to HDMI. With so many adapters in line, I wasn't sure if Sony would work and when I called them, they weren't exactly confident it would work either so I actually tested this all out really just for the client so he could be confident before buying and thought if I posted it, someone else might find it helpful. Edit: the reason I use RU-vid when testing is because of copyright issues. Also some content from apps like Comcast or Disney for example may not work through HDMI due to copyright issues, but RU-vid in my experience always works.

You should check out my most recent video. I haven't had a single complaint from any clients regarding the screen on the 4000 or 6000. These are very popular models at our shop, but these are NOT HD displays. If you want an HD display AND wireless CarPlay/Android Auto you need to spend more $$. I cover it at 5:22 and show the 6000 vs the 4000 vs the HD display options from Kenwood, Sony and Alpine. If you don't want to spend the extra $, but want a nice display and are cool with wired connection, the DMX709s is a nice option and great value. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-buHlB4bXkEQ.htmlfeature=shared&t=322

I think I already answered this for you a couple weeks ago?? Sony doesn't get that in depth on the monitor specifications, just states that it has your typical 1,152,000 pixels found with most aftermarket head units with 800 x 480 RGB displays. Personally I find the vibrancy/saturation to be lacking compared to other options with similar price point (like DMX809s for example) YET both the 4000 and 6000 are very responsive/accurate to touch.

Did you buy the Apple branded Apple Lightning Digital A/V adapter? I have found that if you use anything other than the original Apple product, it won't work properly. Weird that you had the same issue with Android, but just something to be aware of. It could also be the content you're trying to stream. Some apps are blocked due to copyright restrictions. Try RU-vid for testing. Also the parking brake wire has to be connected/engaged and be sure the software is up to date on the radio. You may need to install the latest firmware. Also, you need to turn off Bluetooth/Wifi and disconnect from wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto or it won't work properly. That's why it was freezing on me with Android initially.

I was hoping for a hard wired connection with apple phones, but apple is only working on wireless atm. Might be a setting or I need to update the firmware. Another thing to look into. I’ll plug in a usb stick loaded with files and see what it does but I really want the option to hard connect if Bluetooth is giving me issues. One thing I miss is the old aux headphone port. Makes doing some things really simple. Once I get my laptop and tablets back, left at relatives over a visit, I can really start messing around with all the different formats of video/flac type files. Sony has been pretty good with supporting various codecs and less common file types. I’m a heavy believer in ripping my own stuff so a lot of what I have is on PCs and portable storage. Yeah, Apple CarPlay is only wireless on this model. Period. No plans for them to change that, BUT they are using a REALLY high wireless processor with their LDAC technology which is capable of up streaming up to 990 kbps at 24 bit/96 kHz so the sound quality is nearly indistinguishable. I did some side by side testing with this and a Kenwood eXcelon DMX709s wired connection and the sound quality was really, really close. Really hard to tell the two apart. Just installed an ax6000 with adapters to play hdmi with android gs21+ 5g. I get a picture, but no audio. Can not figure this out. Also, seems like wireless android auto is done via wifi and that causes some apps to not work when connected wirelessly. But switch to wired and then it's fights wireless vs wired over and over. Android auto connects and disconnects randomly.

Is the firmware up to date regarding the Android Auto dropping out? That or do you have any type of VPN on there? I had a Google Pixel block Android Auto connection due to the built in Google VPN and the client had to whitelist the app to get it working consistently. Regarding the HDMI connection, Apple seems to have the same issue with CarPlay as well. You basically have to turn off Bluetooth/WiFi to disable the Android Auto connection and that should get the audio back on the HDMI.

@carstereochick I bought it as a plug and play setup from someone that has built tons of them. Assumed it was all good to go and flashed properly. But I can't seem to get clear answers on some settings in the Sony for maestro rr (individual volume settings, sub control is not true (high levels for Toyota amp apparently so don't use crossovers), maestro input level goes from -8 to 8 - but no description of what that does. Etc etc. An AWESOME video would be explaing all the maestro settings accessed via the Sony unit. Explaining what the heck they do.

Would you recommend the xav4000 or 6000 if I won't use the HDMI function? Is the display more vibrant in the 6000? Or is the 4000 enough? Let me know, thanks!

I haven't powered them up side by side yet, but that is the next video I have planned - an in depth review on both! I should have that posted right after Thanksgiving.

I would suggest staying away from ALL resistive touchscreens. 1) the layers of the screen is not gonna be vibrant, more likely to get washed out in the sunlight, etc. 2) and most importantly, if your flimsy top layer screen cracks....you've got a worthless radio.

Can I ask how you get these flush mount plugs installed? Like, did you replace something else in the car, or drill a hole for it or something? Thinking of doing something similar but don’t understand the logistics. Thanks!

We usually drill a hole to accommodate. In some cars we might replace a 12 volt outlet if there is more than one available and the client does need it. Currently I'm working on editing a video for this radio getting installed in a BMW E46 and I'll actually have the part included where John drills and files out an opening for a USC C flush mount. That will probably be posted in a week or 2.

I just installed the Sony XAV-AX6000 . My question is after selecting a favorite in my fm radio settings how to I get back to my favorite list. I’ve tried several times but each time it just reverts back to the 18 presets the radio detects instead of my favorite list

Let me play around with this, I thought it was as simple as pressing and holding a preset when you're on the station you want to store. Is it retaining everything else? Like the date/clock settings?
